Elkie, probably the most underrated female vocalist ever, and not just in the UK, you know who it is when this Lady sings, what a voice, what a woman!!!
Jeff Buckley brought me here . But i remember this version as a kid , She also knocked this song out of the park , what a voice and version of this song .
Always adored this beautiful, haunting song! I was 10 years old when it charted in 1978. That singular, gentle oboe on the courus still sends shivvers down my spine, as does the sparkling quality of Elkie's gorgeous voice. Weird thing is a grew up to be a Metal head & techno lover. Elkie had such elegance & class. Lovely memories!
She’s right up there as one of our best ladies , effortlessly talented, so cool , somehow makes every song she sings seems like she is the only one to record it 💋
I just got back from seeing Elkie live for the first time, I was prepared for a bit of wear and tear in her voice I WAS WRONG!!!!, she was absolutely, unbelievably, superb as was her band, if you get the chance you should try to get a ticket to see her during the rest of her tour.
Can’t believe only so few likes . Obviously don’t know how talented and how powerful beautiful her voice is just amazing always played this song over and over amazing lady and a Manchester girl ❤️🤗
One of the very few who can deliver a cover version a thousand miles ahead of the original. I saw her live in performance only a few years ago (I'm writing in 2021) and she was wonderful, completely technically excellent, but, most importantly, she delivered every emotional moment as she always, always, does.
Excellent quality I think! One of my favourite songs sung beautifully by a beautiful lady with, in my opinion, one of the greatest voices ever. She puts everything into this song but doesn't overdo it and holds those notes amazingly well. Thank you kindly for this!
I lost myself on a cool damp night Gave myself in that misty light Was hypnotized by a strange delight Under a lilac tree I made wine from the lilac tree Lost my heart in its recipe Made me see what I want to see Be what I want to be But I think more than I ought to think And do things I never should do I drink much more that I ought to drink Because it brings me back you Lilac wine is sweet and heady Like my love Lilac wine, I feel unsteady Like my love Listen to me I cannot see clearly Isn't that he coming to me Nearly here? Lilac wine is sweet and heady Where's my love? Lilac wine, I feel unsteady Where's my love? Listen to me Why is everything so hazy? Isn't that he Or am I going crazy, dear? Lilac wine, I feel I'm ready For my love Feel I'm ready For my love.
A great voice and a hot lady. The North Manchester Jewish community has given us some talents, including Elkie, author Howard Jacobson, and most of the guys who were in 10cc.
Elkie, probably the most underrated female vocalist ever, and not just in the UK, you know who it is when this Lady sings, what a voice, what a woman!!!
This isn't Elkie Brooks. It's Imelda May. Nevertheless, you're absolutely right about Elkie.
Elkie is one of the best singers this country has ever produced. This is my favourite song of hers. Total class.
In my opinion, the best.
Never got the recognition she deserved.
I keep returning to this every few months, it’s fab, I agree.
Ellie is the top of all singers
England?
Listening in August ‘23 still sounds amazing
August '24 😜
August 2024 still gorgeous
Almost 74 years old and this is the first time I've heard this song on 9*1*1. Absolutely moving. Elkie Brooks' voice is amazing.
Best British female voice ever!
2024 Always followed Elkie. Fabulous singer but even better live. I've been fortunate enough to see her live many times.
Puts all of today's "singers" well and truly in the shade....75 today and still hitting the notes....
Happy Birthday Elkie. 💝
👍👏👏👏❤️
Agreed, to much emphasis on visuals ,rather than the sound, listen to a well produced/recording and it's literally like stepping into another reality
The greatest voice ive ever heard. Image a duet elkie and freddie
Jeff Buckley brought me here . But i remember this version as a kid , She also knocked this song out of the park , what a voice and version of this song .
Incredible. Timeless.
Totally brilliant, no voice like Elkie Brooks. Except Maddy Prior. Passion, class and something few have, "star quality".
Elkie is an awesome singer. She needs more exposure, I think she is amazing.
Always adored this beautiful, haunting song! I was 10 years old when it charted in 1978.

Brilliant best song ever

The vibrato is amazing. Such control. Always been a favourite of mine.
Flawless top of her game such a clear loud unbeatable singer 👏
Beautiful version of this song, I'd say one of the best I've heard, Better than Ms Simone's in fact, but that's my personal opinion.❤❤❤❤❤
Just wonderful Elkie,thank you.
One of my go to songs I belt out, when I'm confused like a newt, love it 🙀 take care all xxxx

Outstanding performance by beautiful Ellie Brooks.

Who did the original Phillip? Have heard quite a few covers but never the original, be interesting to compare them.

Fabulous ❤️
Best version ever..
There are many great versions but I have to say that this one is my fav.
fannycraddock99
I totally agree.
A brilliant performance of my favourite song by Elkie.
The ending is sublime.
That's how to perform a song on stage. I pity the act that had to follow that on TOTP.
Excellent quality I think! One of my favourite songs sung beautifully by a beautiful lady with, in my opinion, one of the greatest voices ever. She puts everything into this song but doesn't overdo it and holds those notes amazingly well. Thank you kindly for this!
Bernard M If you like her version, try listening to Jeff Buckley’s version, if you haven’t already. His is the only one that comes close to this one.
The definitive lilac wine ❤
Unbelievable, the very best power ballad ever.
Beautiful powerful voice
Love this song. 🌸🌺🌸
Best blues singer ever….please come to Wexford Opera House in Ireland.❤
Saw her live in EDINBURG Scotland
1981 [I think] Usher Hall
She fronted Vinegar Joe
Great voice
So dramatic…love it❤️
Vinegar Joe- honky tonk woman - no wonder she made it ❤️❤️❤️👍👍
Awesome. What a singer. Pure Class.
Beautiful singer
Very atmospheric
great great song love it so much love Elkie brooks
Adore this song and how Elkie performs it.
I lost myself on a cool damp night
Gave myself in that misty light
Was hypnotized by a strange delight
Under a lilac tree
I made wine from the lilac tree
Lost my heart in its recipe
Made me see what I want to see
Be what I want to be
But I think more than I ought to think
And do things I never should do
I drink much more that I ought to drink
Because it brings me back you
Lilac wine is sweet and heady
Like my love
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady
Like my love
Listen to me
I cannot see clearly
Isn't that he coming to me
Nearly here?
Lilac wine is sweet and heady
Where's my love?
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady
Where's my love?
Listen to me
Why is everything so hazy?
Isn't that he
Or am I going crazy, dear?
Lilac wine, I feel I'm ready
For my love
Feel I'm ready
For my love.
I can sing that lovely song
Just outstanding 👏
Saw her, ONCE, in Salford, I think. Me 74yo - Bucket List, is to go see Elkie again.
Absolutely superb.
stunning !!
Pure talent
Class!!!
Would be lovely if the ladies became sensual again. And us blokes became gentlemen again...
Yes, it would!?
She was once the honkey tonk women, vj
Absolutely awesome performance, wonderful singer, wonderful song, seen her do it live.
My favourite song, Pearls a Singer coming in a close 2nd
First time I have listened to this since buying the extended version in the early 80's. Beautiful song.
Classic 🎉
Superb as always !!💗🌷
Netflix One Day rekindled a memory and brought me here....
And me, exactly the same, had totally forgotten this existed.
Me too. Until One Day I had not properly listened to the lyrics.
Christmas 22.12 2223 Brilliant Elkes one of the best ❤
Elkie Brooks sings this song better than anyone else in the world! Saw her perform this in Cheltenham a couple of years ago and she was AMAZING :)
yes she is from the Shirley Bassey school when they sing a song they put everything into it
saw her enjoyable show at the Tottenham Court Road (Odeon, I think....).....45 years ago !......Lilac wine, indeed....
I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that she has Italian genes. Beautiful lady, voice, song!
She is Jewish - real name Elaine Bookbinder
Yes. But weirdly not in Wikipedia's list of Jewish singers.
What a voice.
best male rendition of the song: Jeff Beck...Elkie just amazing.
A great voice and a hot lady. The North Manchester Jewish community has given us some talents, including Elkie, author Howard Jacobson, and most of the guys who were in 10cc.
