Freddie Mercury's Voice Evolution (1973 - 1991)

  • This video depicts the evolution of Freddie Mercury's voice in Queen from 1973 to 1991, the year of his death.
    In the video, all songs contain only the vocal part, to analyze it better and to enhance its differences between the years.
    Freddie Mercury's voice is probably among the seven wonders in the world of rock. The singer had an extraordinary instrument at his disposal and he used it in an incredible way thanks to his experience with Queen. Mr. Bad Guy used a particular technique, that of subharmonics.
    This vocal style is characteristic of some specific ethnic musical genres. From what emerged, it then appears that Freddie's vocal cords were moving with such rapidity that it was considerably higher than that normally recorded in humans.
    Furthermore, most rock singers have a vocal habit of maintaining a constant vibrato, while Mercury's was not only more irregular but also unusually faster. All distinctive signs that have consecrated the voice of Freddie Mercury as absolutely unique and memorable.

      In fact his voice becomes more and more "dark" over the years and with greater voice control. Just listen to a Live from 1974 and a Live from 1985: you will see that the voice is a little different.

    • @Motown-1966
      @Motown-1966 3 роки тому +18

      @@danyfilmusic IDK whatcha mean by 'dark' but Freddie did have a greater range that he'd utilized more in his later yrs than his earlier ones. But make no mistake, Freddie sang some of the lowest notes ever from him in Bo-Rhap & All Dead All Dead. He'd also sang Slightly Mad mainly in a lower register.
      On the flip side, Freddie's upper register tones were lighter earlier on but he'd hadn't yet mastered the falsettos/high full/chest voice with control (at least in studio) until the early '80's. His voice got stronger from The Game on but he'd of course had those pesky nodule flareups during back-to-back concert dates mainly during The Works tour. He'd had that one crack at the very end of their Live Aid set but that crack actually suited the complexion of the set (the way he'd bared his soul that day). Thankfully, The Magic tour didn't have the extended concert dates like most of their previous tours had. I think Knebworth was added on & I believe Bri said they had wanted to extend the tour, but Freddie said no more. Contrary to the reports that Freddie was officially diagnosed in '87, he actually had been tested in Spring of '86 as he'd knew deep down inside he was ill. He'd told Mary coming off the stage at the last concert that he wasn't well 'n that he didn't want to 'do this' anymore. My guess is that he'd told the band members this during the last show 'n it's likely why Deacy's seen throwing his bass at the end.
      Freddie's vocals only got better 'n better once he'd gotten some very much needed rest, stopped smoking/drinking, & (I believe) received breathing/vocal techniques from Montsy (Montserrat Caballe). She once stated that Freddie had been 'selling the voice' and I can't help to wonder if she'd meant his singing technique he'd been using all of those yrs which were damaging to his vocal cords. Had she taught him proper technique? It makes total sense if she'd had 'cos his voice just got phenomenal from the Barcelona LP on...js.

    It seems to me that in the 80's he started to have a thicker voice. After he got sick, I think he stopped smoking and his voice started to sound like he was in the 70s (jazz album style). He sang the songs from the album The Miracle and Innuendo more smoothly.

    • @xd-qg5dz
      @xd-qg5dz 3 роки тому +5

      The 80s voice is more grating on his voice, to me it sounds like he's singing way louder to make it come out with that 'manly' grate + smoking ontop of it. You can hear different his voice is once he stops smoking. On I Want It All, I believe he's doing the same technique used in Fat Bottomed Girls (though by this time his voice is still clear enough because he only just started smoking around this time) but it comes out clearer due to dropping the smoking.

  • @laotzu00
    @laotzu00 3 роки тому +353

    He used more falsetto early on and later opted to go with more of a mix. This was probably because he had vocal nodules and would not have surgery. So he adjusted his style to work around that. His range became a bit more restricted, but his tone got beefier, and he sounded magnificent live even though he often sang differently than he did in the studio. He had laryngitis when he sang at Live Aid and still stole the show. He was always incredible.

Would've loved to hear him sing the songs from Innuendo & Made in Heaven live! That last stage get up was ridiculously too large for him in his failing heath (& he knew it). @@Motown-1966 Yeah, that's never been confirmed nor would it make sense in the context of the song.
      It fits being written for Mary _perfectly._ The lyrics wouldn't make sense if you assumed it was written for Minns.
      Their relationship began right around the time ANATO was released, yet the song is mainly about someone being hurt by their love and wanting them back, telling them no matter what in the end they will still love them even when they're old. Sounds like it fits Mary and Freddie perfectly, seeing as how he cheated on Mary in secret with Minns and he knew he was going to have to end the relationship romantically with her.
      Point is, it was never confirmed by Freddie and I don't trust John Reids words at all. Jim Beach is the one that has said it was about Mary, and I trust him way more.

      @@lessalazar9068 I see your point ‘bout the references ‘n how you’ve (& I believe Feebie aka Peter Freestone’s thoughts on the song maybe being written from Mary’s POV). Having said that, Freddie has been seeing other men on Mary for years ‘n he wouldn’t have left Mary if it weren’t for Minns’ ultimatum to Freddie once he’d spent that night at their flat. In his book: “This Was the Real Life,” he indicates that Freddie said nothing was goin’ on between he ‘n Mary but Minns noticed they share a bedroom together & assumed they were intimate. He’d threaten to end their relationship right then ‘n there if Freddie didn’t come clean with Mary ‘n leave her in order to be with him exclusively. They had stopped seeing each other but Freddie had became distraught & eventually did what Minns asked of him. Minns ‘n Freddie met during the recording of ANATO a entire month prior to the completion of the LP. Freddie could’ve easily written LOML with Minns in mind as well.
      At any rate, Freddie never revealed anything ‘bout his songs is true. Millionaire Waltz is said to be written for John Reid but could’ve very easily have been dedicated to a lover as well. Certainly, Killer Queen was initially said to be ‘bout a prostitute but Eric (I can’t remember his sir name...sorry) of EMI claims the song was written ‘bout him as Freddie had a crush on him but he was str8, therefore, he was a Killer Queen.That he’d used to keep Moet in a cabinet in his office ‘n that he wore his hair in a curly perm like Marie Antoinette. So who really knows 😂!

    Thanks a million for bringing on only the voice tracks, one can hear every little nuance. First time ever I notice he keeps staying in the head or middle register, almost never going down to the chest positioning. Although he could do it flawlessly (“Exercises in Free Love” keep floating through my mind). Very interesting.

If I was forced to choose the voice of the younger or older Freddie, while it would be difficult I guess I would go with the younger Freddie. I just love the tone and youth in his voice. Oh heck, I just love the "everything" in his voice, whatever age. Be at peace with our Lord, Freddie.
