  • Hello everyone! Over the past 6 months, I have learned a bit more about Resistances inside of the game. That, combined with the various questions on it, leads me now to do my first redux of my original resistance videos from back in May. This is NOT comprehensive and does NOT use complicated math in it, but it is still "roughly right" overall -- which is close enough for me to use personally and reference inside of the game. For those of you that want something "more right" than this, see the plethora of links I have included for you.

    As an added note, NONE of these formulas were figured out nor created by me. I simply tested them out and these ones seem to be the closest to reality in the game and are relatively simple to conceptualize and think about -- which is why there are included in this video.

    This video has been an eye opener. I have been chasing high DPS for a while now, and have had some good progress on it. Then I changed to tanking, after seeing my fleet admiral survive everything that we threw at him. I started by changing my skill on shield hardness to 3. Wow did that help! Still have some work to do, but wanted to thank you for the video and the advise it gives.

    Thanks for the info around shields (resistance & hardness), will be going through a respec later.
    I particularly like the explanation of DRR and DR%, so much simpler than Cryptic's explanation. Do you happen to have a list of traits & consoles with any sport of hierarchy to them (prioritisation of what to get first)?

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  6 років тому

      I don't have a specific trait list personally, but I know that Darkblade & Timberwolf were working on making one as of a month ago. Personally, a lot of trait choice for me comes down to personal preference & playstyle. The game is generally easier with History will Remember or Honored Dead as one of your starship traits for tanking and having the Protomatter Field Projector from the old event Lukari ship (available as an epic drop from Phoenix Lockbox if you don't have it and are lucky) or the Reiterative Structural Capacitor from the Weekend Store as a "clickie" console are also quite nice in a pinch. I do have my "Strongest Survival Consoles" video from a while ago that goes through a couple of categories to consider for consoles -- though that isn't necessarily an "order-of-priority" of things to get.

    By the way, nice to see you showing the Intrepid ship there, my sisters love that little thing, and I guess because of them I started to to like it too, I have a bunch of characters and at least two of them are using the Pathfinder, and with the right setup, that little thing can become a monster little ship, which I guess that might be why they like it, no one would pay much attention to it before they start pulverizing everything kind of thing.
    I myself prefer to be a little more tanky, it can be done with it too (I wanted to mention that since I've heard people say the ship can't do damage and can't tank, which is absolutely not true)
    By the way, the Pathfinder comes with a pretty useful starship trait, which seems to be extremely overlooked, but it's unbelievably useful, specially when trying to activate something in space, under constant fire from enemies

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  6 років тому

      Ablative Field Projector does give a sizable amount of Temporary HP - so it can be useful. The trait is overlooked because Temporary Hit Points have **ZERO** Damage Resistance on them -- so they are less useful than they appear. Now if Cryptic changed that so it had the DR% of your ship apply to the Temporary HP, then traits like this one would be in the viable discussion for starship traits I would recommend to players. It's still usable, but hard to argue using this trait above other ones from the C-Store.

      @@CounterYoloGaming I hope that they get it sorted out soon. Normally the way I have my ships, not even the Borg can completely drain my shields, most of the time I'm fighting with almost to full shields, and definitely full hull which I normally have a shit load of, even on ships other than Cruisers or Dreadnoughts, so when I join an TFO and I see every single one getting absolutely melted in seconds, I already know it's one of those bugged ones. The problem is that, it doesn't seem to be a specific type of enemy, it seems like some server bug or something.
      One of my sisters mentioned a few days ago, that she was doing the mission to get the Solanae space set, so she was playing over and over consecutively (since another extremely annoying thing is the trait reset when using mission specific ships, so it's best to just get it done the number of times required for the set) anyway, she was playing the mission for the third time and she said that the same mission she had problem previously in the first two times, the third one she was getting one shot blown up over and over, she had to drop the mission and restart it hours later and it was ok again. I have experienced similar situations, so I don't think it's an specific enemy but something else with the server, otherwise she would have a problem the first two times doing the same mission.

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  5 років тому +1

      No problem -- this channel is here as a starting place for discussion on tanking & survivability. As a preference & a caveat, I am still experimenting with T6 reputations and their impact into my traits, gear, builds, etc. for my captains in the game. Any setups on the channel do not currently take T6 reputations skills into consideration; as thus, the skill tree you may find could be drastically different than what I generally recommend in a month or so.
      However, in the description of most build videos (if not all) on the channel, you should find an STO Academy link made by me for that specific build I show in the video. Keep in mind that there are MANY different ways to tank -- and I normally skew towards survival & threat generation instead of nullification or straight DPS. Depending on your preferences and things available to you (starships, traits, damage preference, energy credit budget, and what you expect to get out of the build), I'm happy to discuss things in further detail and create a customized STO Academy link/build if needed for you based on those preferences. There is no best way to tank, just that the build you want should hopefully be something that you will enjoy -- which is why I don't want to force a build upon you.
      For specific build advice, it's typically easier to talk via my email (counteryologaming@gmail.com), but those STO Academy links should help with some ideas -- alongside other of the more generalized videos on tanking recently on the channel. There are a few energy types I haven't covered yet (and a science tank build coming out in less than 2 weeks) that may also be of interest to you depending on what your expectations are.

    There is no justification for random crit oneshots that often give minimal to 0 time for you to react (depending how close you are to the torp or if you can actually see anything in this FX polluted mess). Even if you see it coming if you don't have brace off cooldown or some other resistance buff you're still screwed. Just because you can build resistances to survive through them doesn't make them fair.

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  6 років тому +2

      Trying to figure out what is and isn't fair is a touchy subject in video games -- especially one as old as STO and how to make it better. I was about to copy & paste a 10+ paragraph response here -- but I think that it would be better to just dedicate a future video to what makes games fair (not the same as balanced). For those of you curious, here's an article for you to read from last year about video games in general (www.polygon.com/2017/9/8/16263050/game-design-magic-tricks).

      @@CounterYoloGaming i see its old but, i think a video made by extra credits went further also on fair but difficult game design with “when difficult is fun”. If STO has any failing, and still does today is in-game not actually providing or giving players the best chance to learn how to improve. The saitama torpedoes of npcs can still sometimes be seen in a few missions(thank god they nerfed npc damage a while ago for normal mode). And that difficulty spike was imo what was driving players away from the game at times.

      You need to look for starships with a high base shield modifier, as that affects what the base shield regeneration of the ship will be (and what will be affected by shield regen multipliers in traits consoles & equipment). Here's a recent link for thoughts to get you started if you want to go that route (though it is not a budget build by any means):

      @@CounterYoloGaming Hmm, I do got the annorax on one of my characters, so it might work.
      However, I might want to go for high shield modifier, I can get the fleet jupiter and get a 3.67 shield modifier.
      Which makes me wonder, is that number actually the real one?
      Cause I always thought 1.8 shield modifier were one of the better one but... 3.67 destroys it.
      What do you think? Shall I use 1 FSM for Jupiter for that shield modifier or should I go for Annorax, or maybe there is another suitable ship?
      Sorry for being a noob, I have always wanted to have strong shields, one of my characters got +30k shield capacity... I am crazy for shields. Sorry again.

    • @CounterYoloGaming

      @@Skullost The shield modifiers shown at the fleet vendor inside the game for fleet T6 starships aren't correct; they got messed up when Cryptic did the changes with scaling hull & shields with the release of Rise of Discovery. I reported on it almost immediately a LONG time ago, and the feedback I got was that it was visual-only only in the ship vendor, so it's not high priority for Cryptic to fix it. If you check the STO Wiki (which is more correct in this weird circumstance), the Fleet Jupiter only has a 1.375 ratio -- the ratio it had in-game before Rise of Discovery changed it to 3.67 or something else ridiculously high. You can actually verify this by looking at the base shield ratio on the regular C-Store Jupiter, which has a 1.25 shield ratio. When you increase that ratio by 10%, it is a 1.375 shield ratio -- not a 3.67 shield ratio. Fleet versions should only have 10% more hull & shields. sto.gamepedia.com/Fleet_Jupiter_Class_Carrier
      The 1.45 ratio on the Annorax is just about the highest shield ratio currently in the game (and definitely the best with a high hull capacity); many people like the Annorax for its tankiness because it still has the regular shield ratio of a science vessel but still a high hull ratio for its time (we later got ships with much higher hull ratios). If you already have the Annorax on one of your characters, that is what I would recommend you using. If not, the Fleet Cardenas (Fleet Qoj on KDF side) has the best shield ratio with a high hull ratio (1.54 hull ratio + a 1.32 shield ratio), though you wouldn't be able to just copy the Annorax's build to this starship, as it is a cruiser vs a science vessel. If you are really wanting a 1.45 shield ratio in a durable science vessel, most are from the exchange. My favorite though is the Eternal Multi-Mission Science Vessel from the 31st Century Pack from the C-Store (6k zen, should be 25% off right now); account-unlock, 1.475 shield ratio with a 1.075 hull ratio (lower than other ships listed, but higher than most science vessels -- as most are under the 1.0 hull ratio), and gets a nice taunt console from the 31st Century cruiser it can use to tank. It's bridge officer seating is different and is down 1 weapon, but is great for science-oriented exotic dps/tanking. sto.gamepedia.com/Eternal_Temporal_Multi-Mission_Science_Vessel
      Technically the highest shield ratio starship in the game is the T6 Tholian Iktomi. I'm not a huge fan of it (especially as it killed the best budget science vessel in the game...), but it's starship trait Improved Photonic Officer is quite strong for science tanking (and decent for anyone else using PO instead of AtB for cooldown management). It has a 1.05 hull ratio and 1.50 shield ratio. sto.gamepedia.com/Tholian_Iktomi
      The best shield ratio starship from the fleet is the Fleet Nautilus. It has a 1.452 shield ratio and 0.968 hull ratio. The Nautilus & Eternal are some of the strongest dps science starships in the game right now according to the STO Builds Reddit. sto.gamepedia.com/Fleet_Nautilus_Temporal_Science_Vessel
      For shields, do NOT focus on having a high shield capacity -- your focus needs to be on shield resistance & shield healing. If you have a starship with a high shield modifier, some extra focus on shield regeneration beyond your regenerative shielding is ok as well. In today's STO, having more and more static shielding doesn't matter as much. Higher hull does matter however, as there are many traits & procs that give you extra hull healing or more hull regeneration based on your max hull on your starship. All of the shield procs only do a standard shield heal on your starship regardless of your overall max shield capacity. As a tank, the higher shield ratios only matter for the extra shield regen it gives your starship, not the extra shield capacity overall it has inherently on it.

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  5 років тому +4

      TL;DR -- if you aren't a tank player, you probably should be using a resilient shield -- unless you are needing a suboptimal shield for a more ideal set bonus with the shield in there.
      Resilient Shields -- great for any playstyle in the game. Especially as most suggested builds are dps-oriented, this is why there is the notion that this is the best general type of shield.
      Regenerative Shields -- great for tank players, especially with several strong set shields in this category for them [tanks can still use resilient depending on the set/preferences to great success]
      Covarient & Standard Shields -- decent for leveling, but the worst options in the endgame

    The enemy damage spike is getting ridiculously annoying, to get pulverized in half a second with full shields and over 178 hull is beyond infuriating. As of it is now, STFs or whatever that they call it now, is a random surprise, an unpleasant surprise at that, the same STF or mission you literally pulverize everything and anything, all of a sudden you start it and enemies will be doing a ridiculous amount of salvo spam damage one shot every single one (without you have a chance to even see what happened, much less click on any console that won't do anything anyway).
    The enemy damage spike in my opinion IS a bug, it can not be as intended as how random it is, and have I mentioned how infuriating it is?
    It sucks because the game can be really fun if you look past it's still existing bugs, but the random one shot you're dead thing is getting on my nerves and I'm pretty sure it gets on someone else's too.
    I'm on PS4 by the way, and I'm the type of player tanking everything and also trying to keep people alive with shield and hull regeneration, but that when the game isn't cheating, which it's not often, but when it does I feel like sledgehammer my PS4, that's how I absolutely do not like getting blown up

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  6 років тому

      Yeah, not sure any of us like getting blown up when we feel we have built as optimally as we can. However, if they did make an historical simulation of battling as the Enterprise-C and trying to last as long as we could -- that would be fun to see how long until we get blown up. The dev's are addressing the enemy spike damage slowly to very specific enemies in the game; they started with normal content 3 months ago and have been slowing implementing nerfs to NPC's. It might still be a little while longer before they get to larger fixes in Advanced & Elite TFO's and in specific missions at harder difficulties.
      And STF's are called TFO's generally now (STF's historically have typically referring to just the Borg queues -- though it could still apply if you are only fighting the Borg).

      The easiest way in the game to get above 75% resistance on your hull (momentarily) is to stack the trait Honored Dead, then activate a console that has BONUS damage resistance on it. It should get you above the traditional resistance cap.
      Technically you can't get above 75% shield resistance in the game, but there are still routes to reduce the source of the incoming damage further (a few select consoles & powers like Suppression Barrage & Chronometric Inversion), which can sort-of be treated similarly overall to having more than 75% shield resistance.

  • @jonahjohnsen6519
    @jonahjohnsen6519 2 роки тому

    Everything you slot should have Crit chance on it.
    Otherwise your wasting a slot and not allowing yourself to reach maximum DPS for your ship.
    Once you reach 50 or higher Crit chance you won't need any survivability because you will blow the crap out of everything on the map.
    The trick is to play as a ranged combatant and triage your threats before engaging.
    I have no resistance no survival traits or consoles but I'm also near 60 percent Crit chance so I blow them up before they do much damage normally I lose only about 20 to 30 percent hull but then all enemies nare dead on the map by then.

    The deminishing returns equations they use in this game are so overly complicated it's insane. There are many much easier ways to get diminishing returns and I just don't get why they used these equations. It leads to tool tips outright lying to you. Example Emergncy weapon cycle starship trait, says it reduces weapon power cost by 50% but if you actually check it then it only drops your cost from 10 to 6.6 instead of down to 5 like it should.

    • @CounterYoloGaming
      @CounterYoloGaming  5 років тому

      48% is more than sufficient DR% for a tank. At that point, adding consoles & traits that add Max Hull and Hull/Shield regeneration to your ship will be more effective than trying to add more DRR to your ship. Many players (especially non-KDF players) swear by the scaling DRR you can get from the Starship Trait Honored Dead off of the exchange -- though the History will Remember trait from the C-Store gives you more linear-scaling stats that are superior than that trait for tanking captains. You can also add shield resistance to your ship if that isn't very high as well for added survivability. I can give you more specialized advice on additional routes to reduce incoming damage, but I am still experimenting with T6 reputations traits -- so some of my advice will be a little outdated after a little while -- and would also depend on your style of tanking, profession, and starship chosen as well for the options to go with.
