    Hint: If you can add extra guns for no speed loss, ADD THE GUNS. And, when you're bombing, you want the largest coverage, so take the most bombs you can, even if they're smaller. Unless you're trying to kill tanks, you don't need large bombs.

    I think your bombing calculation was a little off. The briefing said you would be bombing from 2500 but it looked like you were calculating for 1500.

    I think the reasoning for that 20mm there was it could be used against surface targets ie ships.

      Not movable enough. AA defense only. If I should attack a He 111I would choose 12 o´clock high: nearly no defense, no armor and a good chance to kill the pilot.

    • @sztypettto
      @sztypettto 3 роки тому +5

      My understanding on forward heavy weapon placement on the Heinkel 111s is that they were installed for close air support strafing soft targets. The 111 was a mid-30s design. The Flying Fortress bomber concept was likely popularised by US and RAF bombers. Which is why you can see the Ju-88, Ju-188 and later designs carrying rearward facing 20 mm cannons. Although ball turrets were never fully incorporated because of the Führer's preferences.

    • @foreverpinkf.7603
      @foreverpinkf.7603 3 роки тому

      @@sztypettto Again: the movement range of the gun is too small to do ground attacks; you can move the gun only a few degrees, so the pilot has to do a dive attack for strafing ground targets. Göring was obsessed by dive attacks but I don´t think the 111 was able to perform so. In later war the Germans preferred higher calibers as 13 , 15 and 20 mm because the impact of 7,92 mm wasn´t good enough anymore due to better armor of the enemy. They didn´t use ball turrets because of the idea of a Kampfkopf: all or most of the crew and the weapons concentrated in a quite small area. I don´t know whose brain was behind that but you see it on most German bombers except the He 111 and He 177.

    • @sztypettto

      @@foreverpinkf.7603 , you make a reasonable argument there. I don't have a source to back up my claims, and it's likely I heard or read about the 111's 20 mm ff cannons for low level strafing when I used to play IL-1946. From what I can remember, the bomber would swoop down below, maintain level flight while the belly/nose gunner would strafe targets. I found it challenging to replicate the same in IL-1946 because of the limitations in the simulator's mechanics back then and I haven't ever found the tactic that I'm referring to as being used in any high frequency. But my foggy memory apart, it begs asking Military Aviation History channel this question. That guy does some solid research.

      @@sztypettto Ok go on and tell me what you´ve found. Never too late to learn. I can imagine that they used their belly guns at low level bombing to have fun with troops and AA. But we´ll see.

    Might I suggest 16 x 50 kg bombs might be more suitable for an 'area attack'? I love the detail though, there's even a blackening around the engine exhaust ports, superb.

    Having x15 25lbs. bomblettes will be more effective against unfortified positions then dropping 1x 250lbs bomb.

    Great vidéo
    For those kind of attack tho, I would suggest to take the 50kg bombs. Think of it this way, during ww2, only 10% of all bomb dropped during an high altitude bombing fell in the targeted area. So bigger is not necessarly the answer, think like a shotgun: if you drop a lot of bombs in the area, you have more chances to hit something from altitude. The big bombs and guns are more suited for more specific task like tactical bombing or anti ship missions
    Also it would make your plane quite a bit lighter and make your take off easier ;)

      -Battle of Stalingrad '42-'43 (base game, rest of modules are dlcs)
      -Battle of Moscow '41-'42
      -Battle of Kuban (russian steppes) '43
      -Battle of Bodenplatte (late war, the Netherlands and Ardennes) '44-'45
      -Flying Circus vol.1 (WW1 module)
      -[upcoming] Battle of Normandy '44
      -[upcoming] Clash at Prokhorovka (tank module)
      There are no Pacific&Britain in the game currently
      (you can find battle of britain in other IL-2 game: IL-2 Cliffs of Dover BLITZ. When it comes to pacific, I think IL-2:1946 has pacific airplanes, but the game hasn't aged well)

    The wind in the bombsight view blows my mind when it says "from 301 to 307", you would think that means it's blowing in from the NW instead of being relative to the planes direction, that's crazy! :(

    • @ColonelVermel
      @ColonelVermel 3 роки тому +3

      The wind is blowing from 301 but it is important for the bomb whether the wind is relatively blowing from aft, left or right. Therefore Taff has to calculate the relative wind direction in regards to his flying plane. This is done via the upper compass ( 9:13 ). The calculated angle is then put in in the lower „relative angle“ compass, 180 degree to the left or right. You can compare this with the AoB (Angle of the bow) in the uboat series (or SH5, etc.)

      Since patch 4.005 the bomb blast damage algorithm has been changed. Any bomb bigger than 250kg has been severely nerfed :( In the ‘old days’ a 1000kg bomb would easily get 40-60 ground kills if dropped correctly. Now the same bombs will do 10-20 damage.

      @@ChattytumblerTCW : So, 8 small 250 kg bombs is the way to go?
      Or, can you carry 32 tiny 50 kg bombs?

    • @ChattytumblerTCW
      @ChattytumblerTCW 3 роки тому

      @@timonsolus the honest answer is not to level bomb in a 111 but rather go in with a ju88 (6x250 and 28x50) or a Bf110 (2x250, 4x50 and a lot of cannon rounds). If you are sticking with the 111 then any that contains bombs up to 250kg in size works best. Dropping 50kgs in clusters of 4 with a slight time delay also works quite well from altitude but you need to do a few passes to be the most efficient which may not be possible if the AA is active or enemy fighters are in the region. Currently not a great time to be a 111 pilot :(

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus 3 роки тому

      @@ChattytumblerTCW : Thanks for the reply.
      Of course, the easy answer to the question 'how best to fly the He 111' is 'don't fly it in the first place' - but I respect Taff a lot for not taking the easy option and simply flying the best machine available for the campaign.
      After all, that option wasn't on offer to Luftwaffe crews at the time - they had to fly whatever machine they were given, and if it was outdated, tough luck, sucks to be you.
