For me, Madagascar 2 the game was the peak of game sequels. It perfectly improved the gameplay of its predecessor while providing many fresh and unique playstyles. It changed my life back when I was a kid. Really cool video dude, I hope your channel gets more attention from the algorithm. Keep it up!
One thing I noticed is that all games are at least a little bit janky in their animations and visuals by nature, and yet the ori games are so smooth and beautifully animated that it really looks like one of the most polished games ever made.
When discussing sequels that proved superior to their originals, we must always remember that Super Metroid is the reason one of gaming's most revered genres exists at all today
Tears of the Kingdom totally fits the bill as well. Somehow improves on the original in every way so much that going back to BOTW feels like it's lacking in comparison
The curious thing about Portal 2 is that, by all means, it is more of the same. While there are certainly new mechanics and the story takes a much more notable seat at the table, it really doesn't feel like it lands particularly far from the first game. It's just that every single thing the first did well was done near perfectly instead. Contrasting that with Doom Eternal, I actually feel that in changing so much of its core systems it actually moved away from the feeling of classic Doom in some pretty substantial ways. I'm pretty certain it's the better game, but it's also much harder to directly compare the two. They feel like they're going after almost entirely different experiences.
i really REALLY hope ur channel grows big so u can do this full time and make even more amazing content for us i found u yesterday and instantly fell in love with ur content lets hope the yt algorithm helps u in ur journey
If you want to know how to rate a prequel after playing the sequel first keep the old score but add a date of when you scored it. Then give them a new score with a date and explain what changed in your opinion.
Some games I would consider is: Borderlands 2, Borderlands 1 was really great imo,but 2 superceded it wholly. Dead Space 2, I couldn't believe how they drastically improved almost all the aspects of dead space 1. Darksiders 2, everything of 1 but better and bigger. Great protag, better loot and more fun exploring! Lastly I'll throw in Aragami 2, 1 was honestly just ok (especially in a time of little to no stealth games atm). 2 just gave us everything we've wanted and more.
Unlike the examples in the video, neither of the two Darksiders games were that great to begin with. Darksiders 2 wasn't an overall improvement over the first game, it had infamous pacing issues and the story does almost nothing with the overarching storyline that connects the games, everything in the game feels like filler, especially in the world of the dead.
I disagree with dead space. I think the first dead space was a lot better than the second one solely because of the atmosphere was so good. It felt like a horror game and the monsters were a real threat so every encounter felt dangerous. The second one felt more like a more standard action game and tbh the combat felt like I was just going through the motions. To me the second one was a let down compared the first one because of the atmosphere change. I played both for the first time last year so I dont really have any memories attached to them so idk.
I understand your struggle with giving things ratings, I do something similar with movies and occasionally there are perfect 10s that just don’t feel like 10s when compared to other, even better movies.
I nominate A Plague Tale Requiem. Innocence was really good, but Requiem was SO good I have trouble even remembering that innocence even existed after playing it
Ori is near and dear to me and Will of the Wisps is great BUT I enjoyed Blind Forest way more. Hear me out. I didn't like Will of the Wisps as much exactly because of all the extra, added, optional content. Ori and the Blind Forest was a refined experience that wanted to tell a story in a particular way and it focused on that. The village in Will of the Wisps is cute and all but it felt like a chore having to go back all the time and it didn't feel like I was moving forward in the story but rather backtracking. I liked the metroidvania without a focus on combat, so I didn't want a dozen weapons I had to choose from. Charms didn't feel necessary as a skill tree was enough to make Ori feel more powerful in ways I wanted. All the customisation I had to think about was excessive and not relevant. Will of the Wisps felt like it was trying to distract me and get in the way of the experience. It added more around the edges but in doing so lessened the core of the game. Now there definitely are plenty of things Will of the Wisps improved and added which enriched the experience, it was by no means a complete downgrade. Blind Forest had me coming back, replaying and even achievement hunting, I didn't even get close to 100% on my one Will of the Wisps save. In the end I still love both and recommend them to anyone. Otherwise, good video, keep it up
Damn, thats exactly how I feel about Will of the wisp too. I liked the first one because the simplicity of things were a breath of fresh air compared to other metroidvanias. The second one had so much random stuff I just gave up on it.
A highly interesting topic for a discussion, I would easily listen to an entire round table talk of such games. For me the two examples that come into mind are Devil May Cry 5 and Sniper Elite 4. I first played DMC 4 after I played the reboot and was highly interested in the original lore. 4 seemed like a good jumping on point because of Nero. I loved the bosses, the style mechanics and the passing of the torch story but then DMC 5 came out and now for the life of me I cannot re-learn to play 4. DMC 5 is so much more polished and clear-cut with interesting, meaningful and necessary changes to the core formula that anything else feels clunky now in comparison. My experience ended being similar with the Sniper Elite series. I finished Sniper Elite V2 a couple of times on different consoles, then ended up buying the entire franchise on PC. 2 to 3 was in an of itself a major step-up from Rebellion but when put against Sniper Elite 4 those games do NOT hold up at ALL. The evolution between 3 and 4 is staggering and honestly kind of ruined the previous entries for me.
Drawing from gaming history. System Shock 2 should absolutely be in this conversation; the original was praised on release and then the sequel set the bar so high it still tops best of lists. While not technically a sequel, the original Doom as a follow up to Wolfenstein should be in the conversation. Arguably Quake as well, creating a hat trick of games that invented the FPS, nailed it so hard that all that followed were called ‘Doom Clones’, then reinvented it again creating true 3D. Honourable mention to Duke Nukem 3D, which was such a radical departure from its 2D platformer entries that it might as well be a different franchise. And finally, Super Mario Bros 3. Super Mario Bros was a system seller. Super Mario Bros 3 is such a refinement of the format that some argue it is the best game on the NES. I’m sure there’re more, but those are the ones I can think of.
System Shock is a bit of an odd one. System Shock 1 and 2 aren't really doing the same thing. They're different enough that 1 still has its own place. Even though SS2 is widely considered the better game, especially for how influential it was, it doesn't necessarily completely supplant SS1.
LittleBigPlanet 2 comes to mind when it comes to sequels that blew the OG out of the water. There are so many fun things about LBP1 already, but LittleBigPlanet 2 not only came at us with cool new mechanics and aesthetics, but also an awesome story and interesting characters - plus that's when community levels began to shine so much more. I miss that game so much, man - I wish they'd remaster the whole trilogy for PC one day
The DLC’s in Doom Eternal easily make the game even even better - Especially the first one. After playing them I’ve barely touched the main campaign since except for master levels
One sequel, that I personally feel is better than the original, while simultaneously being underrated, is BioShock 2. I’ve always felt more enjoyment, and investment in its story as opposed to the first one. I also feel that, unlike BioShock Infinite, it actually genuinely improves on the mechanics of the first game.
My favorite game of all time is a sequel, Left 4 Dead 2! While I don't think it fits in this video as it's more of an expansion of the original (which is already incredible), I'll always love it
The Guacamelee! games were the same to me when I played them. They are 5/5 games. I've grappled with this problem as well and the solution I've arrived at is it's fine to put both down as 5/5 games. A game's rating doesn't tell the full story, what it does is set a threshold for the games of the highest quality and if both games clear it even if one is better that doesn't really matter, they both cleared the threshold. The other solution is to change to a rating system with more steps, but usually if that's something you want to do you are doing it, personally I use a 5/5 rating system for a reason and that's not going to change. I'm one of those people who really didn't care for the first Ori game. I thought it had some good ideas, but the execution was riddled with issues, but I was optimistic for the sequel and it blew me away by fixing all the problems and doing what they excelled at better. Of course after the investigation of what the inner workings of Moon Studios was like was released the game is dead to me.
Mass Effect - I couldnt imagine at the time more than just the amazing story that was the first game... so many interesting characters, interesting world, much to explore, wow it was great!.... And then Mass Effect 2 came out.. and well okay now I just only ever play ME1 for new saves - it just was so much better!
Ori and the Will of the Wisps was literally everything I loved from the previous game, but the combat was more fun. As a result of course I would love the second game more. The main thing I think the first game did better is showing Ori fix the world. Ori cleaning the water being the main one that pops to mind.
Some other examples that would fit this category: Borderlands 2, Divinity Original Sin 2, Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, Age of Empires 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Street Fighter 2, GTA 3, Devil May Cry 3, Team Fortres 2. All of these render their predecessors obsolete, little to no reason to go back to them.
im going to sound insane but i unironically liked ori and the blind forest more than will of the wisps specifically because i speedran the randomizer for it. I could never get into will of the wisps, maybe one day.
Your experience with the Portal games was my exact experience with Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 3. I played FNV first and, because I really enjoyed it, thought I'd try to get some more of the same by playing Fallout 3 which seemed very similar. I left feeling very disappointed due to missing QoL changes found in the sequel, and the different setting combined with (imo) worse writing. Never finished FO3.
0:19 Literally i was w tlou . So yeah for me it's The Last of Us Part II ! Oh 😭 , I LOVE that game just like this. the mood of this video is literally me w tlou to tlou2 ! omg ❤❤
hotline miami 2 is alot better than 1 imo, the increase in difficulty, the increase in blood and gore, the better (although more confusing) story, the increase in variaty in settings and enemies, all of this add up to make me at least believe it is a fantastic and worthy sequal to hotline miami 1 (as a phycopath I especially like the increase in blood because the first game looks like daycare in comparison)
I think every aspect of the game was improved, except the gameplay. I could not deal with it it was terrible. But yes the story and vibe and stuff was better
I think for me Halo 2 deserves an honorable mention here (though it's probably too controversial to put in a video like this since a lot of people's favorite halo game is Combat Evolved), given how its gameplay, visuals, voice acting, and story (still my favorite story in any campaign of any game ever) went above and beyond the first game. Not to mention the records it set, still being in the top few biggest video game launches of all time. It's probably more so my opinion than anything else, but I still regard it as one of the greatest sequels ever.
Thats for you tbh, even on release and me personally alot of people didnt like halo 2 Is just a downgrade compared to the original Maybe Half-Life 2 should get a honorable mention
@@StrobaCat my first Halo game was Halo 3 so I wasn't around for release and I didn't have the CE nostalgia that a lot of people have, but I think that also means I have the advantage of hindsight being able to see how things that were criticized turned out well for Halo moving forward. But besides that, it is just my opinion, and I was specifically referring to the campaign (I never got into halo 2 multiplayer much), so there could be a lot wrong there that I never noticed. I still think it's the best story in all the games, definitely a step up from the first game in how involved the story was with the missions. Nothing against CE's story, it was and still is iconic and has some of the best moments in gaming (like the flood reveal), but Halo 2 has some of the coolest cutscenes and moments, and 90% of all frequently quoted lines seem to come from Halo 2. It took a story and world that was comparatively barebones and fleshed it out really well through a narrative that gives a peak behind the curtains of the covenant.
(this comment is totally my opinion) i haven't played spelunky 1, but spelunky 2 felt very unfair with lack of hp and a lot of hard enemies and traps (yeah ik ik skill issue)
@@davidzaydullin I havent really played spelunky 1 or 2 that much, but the little I have played the controls and everything flows so much better in the sequel. So many qol things too. I don't really have a say on the difficulty though.
Personally, when I think of good games with a even better sequel, I think of Titanfall 2, Halo 2, and (not sure if it counts but) Zelda tears of the kingdom.
Batman Arkham City improves the core combat and stealth mechanics of the first game to such a dramatic degree, that it makes the first game feel shallow and dull by comparison. (The Last of Us Part II is another Too Good sequel)
Imho a game sequel isnt rated purely as its own game but how it manages to expand on and improve on its predecessor. So for example if doom eternal was literally just doom 2016 but with new maps and a new story, it would get an average to bad rating from me because it failed to expand on the original game. Even if on its own it wouldve been just as good as 2016. Does that make sense? This reasoning is why I have tears of the kingdom at the same rating as botw despite totk basically just being botw but better. I just cant give totk credit for the exploration/world that is mostly the same as botw. It doesnt capture that same feeling a majority of the time, even if its improved and added many other things. So tl;dr 5/5 sequel is a different thing from a 5/5 experience on its own
bro missed Dark Souls II (also i feel hotline miami 2 was a better game and if you played it first it would be far better, but most people played 1 first and that first expierence sticks with you either way)
Ori makes me think of Hollow Knight. I can see why ppl like it so much, the art, the atmosphere and the world building. All so incredible, but I can’t enjoy these games like the rest. I wish I liked Hollow Knight. But I don’t like that the story is written on a bunch of papers.
Dom eternal was definitely a step down. The combat, progression, and difficulty flowed so much better in 2016. the encounters in Eternal would drag on to the point of boredom, especially when they would throw "puzzle" enemies at you. I prefer the soundtrack in 2016 as well.
Counterpoint: Despite the cool new movement tech, Doom Eternal is a massive downgrade because it only wants you to play how IT wants you to. It gives you the illusion of freedom, but it's a lie. Biggest disappointment of the last decade.
its quite opposite man💀 also being able to spam one weapon you like 24/7(and you can still do that on easiest difficulty) is worse than needing to do combos and using different weapons for different enemies
So many people say doom eternal wants you to play it’s way however if you think for a bit it’s a very flawed argument , instead of shooting sticky’s into cacodemons mouths you can quick swap between between rocket and ballista and it’s actually faster, when facing marauder instead of waiting for the green you can use remote det to hit him while he’s facing you or you can use a bfg and he’ll turn to it giving an opportunity to damage him heavily(although not recommended since bfg ammo is rare). There are many more combinations and alternatives you could do in the game that I haven’t mentioned so I hope you understand now.

will of the wisps is pure eye candy. One of the most beautiful games of all times. The luma pools level is etched into my brain.

Yeah you don't get the double jump until like the fourth level or something so the first few are slower

Low key Ori and the wisps is the best xbox game of all time
risk of rain 2, spelunky 2
Haven't tried either of these yet!
I don't really have a say on the difficulty though.
one of my favorite games is risk of rain 2 and it 100% outshines the original in my opinion
For me Borderlands 2 blew my socks off
rdr2 (great video👏)
I haven't tried rdr2 but I feel like I have to at some point. Thanks for the support :)
Personally, when I think of good games with a even better sequel, I think of Titanfall 2, Halo 2, and (not sure if it counts but) Zelda tears of the kingdom.
Doom Eternal is really scary because it has g*ns(guns) in it
Risk of Rain 2: am i a joke to you??
Batman Arkham City improves the core combat and stealth mechanics of the first game to such a dramatic degree, that it makes the first game feel shallow and dull by comparison.
(The Last of Us Part II is another Too Good sequel)
Titanfall 2 has entered the conversation.
Batman Arkham City could definitely make this list
good thumbnail videod kinda cringe tho but props for the thumb lots of color
So tl;dr 5/5 sequel is a different thing from a 5/5 experience on its own
Came here to say that Titanfall 2 is amazing
Team fortress 2: i guess I'll die
Where's L4D2?
i would mention spider-man 2 and batman arkham city too
Thief 2?
Mario Galaxy 2 fits this imo
bro missed Dark Souls II
(also i feel hotline miami 2 was a better game and if you played it first it would be far better, but most people played 1 first and that first expierence sticks with you either way)
Ori makes me think of Hollow Knight. I can see why ppl like it so much, the art, the atmosphere and the world building. All so incredible, but I can’t enjoy these games like the rest. I wish I liked Hollow Knight. But I don’t like that the story is written on a bunch of papers.
I like a more linear story smth like GoW
Me when I have to read
Based purin enjoyer and overwatch 2 hater
Left 4 Dead 2?
red dead redemption 2 will surpass rdr in all aspects. story wise rdr2 is pre-equal but it was sequel.
To me Doom eternal felt like a downgrade from Doom 2016, besides feeling like fanservice.
So... umm... Daggerfall.
Borderlands 2 is still the best borderlands in the series
witcher 3
Dom eternal was definitely a step down. The combat, progression, and difficulty flowed so much better in 2016. the encounters in Eternal would drag on to the point of boredom, especially when they would throw "puzzle" enemies at you. I prefer the soundtrack in 2016 as well.
also Eternal is waaay too gimmicky, ain't it?
@@goldheartodyssey4486 I think so. I just felt fatigued from it by the end of the game.
Bad opinion
I was bored to death by 2016 in the third act and never got tired of Eternal
Last
First
Congrats
@@mygameopinions it was my first time typing "first", now I feel like I should have typed smth meaningful xd
@@DanDlllm agreed, also i remember watching videos of some pros where they show like a lot of ways to humilate big demons really fast
Biggest dissapointment of the last decade? Wtf are you smoking?
Yet 2016 is still ungodly boring in comparison
