For the ultimate cheapest setup, I know lots of people just use oil pan heaters from NAPA... I think the EZ heat ones are pretty overpriced, but maybe worth it? And there are definitely cheaper MSR-type stove options. I just like the MSR because I trust them in extreme cold...
I added a tannis engine block heater and two pads. My mini generator pushes it fine and it warms up the big engine quickly. Otherwise, I have a red dragon propane of which Ive never used…yet. As for engine covers…I’ve never had much faith in the big blanket types. By the numbers i haven’t seen much notable improvement. Ive always wondered why someone doesn’t design and make an INFLATIBLE one with a few layers. Lighter for sure, compact and vastly more R value than all these blanket type bulky engine covers. Thanks for sharing….and dont forget in the old days they drained the oil when they landed, put in a can, then heated it on the stove the next morning and poured it back in. Watch the OLD video “My Alaska” if you can find it
I've heard the tannis works well, just can't stomach the cost and complexity when I've got such good results for really cheap. Also yes I love the stories of draining the oil and heating it on the stove!
Be careful with open flame near your engine. I had a engine fire with a similar setup, MSR stove and pipe. I think you need a flame arrestor grill. Better with a catalytic camping stove
It’s ridiculous the efforts people go through to preheat these dinosaur legacy engines compared to their personal cars or trucks. My 915 has a limitation of -4°F before needing preheat.
you should come to patagonia soon !!!
Good video, man! Thanks for the info on your pre-heat setup.
thanks!

good info! would love to see a vlog on a backcountry ski day this winter!
I've got one video from a while back, but more coming for sure!

For sure, I always monitor it closely when I'm using the stove. Curious what you think caused your fire?

Hahaha no doubt, I hope a 915/916 is in my future one day!
Hey that hair dryer have an STC? You can’t pee in a bag with out buying some kind of STC. Go experimental!
Haha I'd love to go experimental, but luckily the hair dryer is temporary... I don't keep it on while flying ;)
