Airplane Pre Heating - My at home and backcountry setups
Airplane pre-heating is critical here in Alaska where we need to pre-heat for at least half the year....or for anyone who is winter flying and could get stuck somewhere without power/heating options. I know this video is long, but I wanted to include all the information and data I could. Curious to hear what other people use for cheap, light, and easy DIY setups?
0:52 - Insulated engine/cowling cover
2:17 - Aircraft engine oil pan heater (250 watt)
3:33 - Cheapest and easiest airplane engine heater! $2.99!!
5:12 - Baseline test - engine at ~30 degrees
6:35 - 1 hour test results with oil pan heater only
8:49 - 2 hour test results with oil pan heater and hair dryer for 1 hour
10:52 - Backcountry/emergency engine heating setup
14:55 - MSR Stove w/ dry vent temperature test
15:53 - Time to go flyin'!

    I'm more worried about bears biting my tires than i am UV rays when I leave it. I usually put a bear fence up around them.

      I had a bear in Egegik shred both my wheel covers and leave slobbery teeth marks on my bushwheels but didn't bite into em... I am convinced that it got distracted playing with the wheel covers and shreding them to bits instead of playing with the tires/fabric!

    Its ironic that people hate modern efi engines but then do all this. You use petrol to power the generator to make electricity to waste as heat. You could just use a petrol stove. Or just use a modern engine. What do you do in an emergency, just wait 2 hours?

    • @builttofly83
      @builttofly83 21 день тому

      Nobody hates modern efi engines. It so happens that there is no efi engine option for an airframe as capable as this. If you don't want to fly an old engine, don't, but why comment?

      You guys don't even understand the acronym that you are throwing around. EFI literally stands for electronic fuel injection. You do not have an electronically controlled fuel injection system on your carbon cub. I know. I work on them.

    Excelent video . Apox1990 I worked at a private airport just north of Toronto Canada . Had to pre - heat Cesna 150s and 170s , used Propane pre-heaters , ( no Engine covers ) had to be careful of Enginen fires from over priming .

    I know all you guys are going to think that this is crazy but the air service that did the flying at our remote camps in northern Canada ie minus 40 diluted the oil by feeding av gas into the oil hopper (Beavers and Otters) ran the engine till oil pressure dropped then shut it down. Did a preheat like the demo in the utube and after start up by the time the engine was up to normal temp all the gas would have evaporated. We also used same system on all our machinery. Cats ran the diesels all night only shut down for oil changes.

    I added a tannis engine block heater and two pads. My mini generator pushes it fine and it warms up the big engine quickly. Otherwise, I have a red dragon propane of which Ive never used…yet. As for engine covers…I’ve never had much faith in the big blanket types. By the numbers i haven’t seen much notable improvement. Ive always wondered why someone doesn’t design and make an INFLATIBLE one with a few layers. Lighter for sure, compact and vastly more R value than all these blanket type bulky engine covers. Thanks for sharing….and dont forget in the old days they drained the oil when they landed, put in a can, then heated it on the stove the next morning and poured it back in. Watch the OLD video “My Alaska” if you can find it

    • @BrendanWells
      @BrendanWells Місяць тому

      I've heard the tannis works well, just can't stomach the cost and complexity when I've got such good results for really cheap. Also yes I love the stories of draining the oil and heating it on the stove!

    For the ultimate cheapest setup, I know lots of people just use oil pan heaters from NAPA... I think the EZ heat ones are pretty overpriced, but maybe worth it? And there are definitely cheaper MSR-type stove options. I just like the MSR because I trust them in extreme cold...
