- Chris Stuckmann reviews Twisters, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Katy O'Brian, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Tunde Adebimpe, Kiernan Shipka. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
We had several tornados touch down in my area on Monday. Viral marketing for this movie has been craaaazzzyyyyy
One time, when I was living in California, I was watching Oceans 13. Part of the plot is that they use a large subterranean machine to intentionally create an Earthquake, to ruin the grand opening of a casino. It gets to that part of the movie and the room starts shaking. It was such perfect timing I was certain someone was shaking my chair from behind. And no one was, it was an actual Earthquake that happened so perfectly I still struggle to comprehend the odds of it happening exactly when it did.

Saw it at a 4D theater here in Taiwan today. Shaking seats and water spraying made it an even more memorable experience. I loved the original but this was a worthy successor.

Same I Absolutely loved the film
So the movie let you see what happened but also showed you what would’ve happened if you didn’t watch it?
I loved the original so much. I also love weather/nature disaster movies so I’m kind of looking forward to this.
Just rewatched the original and it holds up pretty well.
Where is 4D in the USA!??
I worked as a VFX artist on this film for the last 9 months, I'm glad you guys enjoyed it! I was always hoping it'd come together as a fun summer blockbuster popcorn spectacle in the end. You keep me entertained a lot through long work hours with all your reviews and discussions. Keep up the great content, cheers!
Can you share how long it took to render those shots you said 9 months of work. What shot was the hardest and took the longest.
Looks aweseom, great work
@@ryans413yessss please Id love to know(I hope to someday be able to work in film)
The first Twister is phenomenal. Never apologize for being a fan of that movie. It's actually really good.
Glen Powell signed to remake Backdraft now also.
Who said the original wasn’t good
Who apologized about liking it?
@Flash18487 Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel each gave it a thumbs down.
@Flash18487 Also, the audience score on RT is 58.
My absolute favourite scene of the original Twister is when they go see Helen Hunt's Aunt. I love the interaction between the different characters and the set-up.
“This gravy is famous! It’s practically a food group!”😅💀
Rest easy P.S.H.
Food. Foooood! FOOOOOOOOD!!!
When they crack the egg into the pan cooking steak lol that is the best scene
I like the scene at the beginning with the skull face in the tornado
Give us meat, we need sustainance!
It's also worth noting that this movie was shot on 35mm film. I'm honestly glad other filmmakers (besides Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Wes Anderson) can still shoot on this format, and not just rely on digital ALL THE TIME. It definitely proves that the Analog Renaissance is alive and well.
Truth. Film looked great and had that nice grain quality to it. Felt like a real movie
The cinematography was still amateurish compared to the original.
Felt like going to the movie theater in the 90s. I love it.
Whoa! Cool tidbit. I noticed that it didn’t look digital but I was like “there’s no way…”
Ohh is that why the cgi looked like a video game?
Storm photographer here. Cannot wait to see this, I already bought my tickets for tomorrow. All I want is a mindless, fun weather action movie and it sounds like that’s exactly what it is.
Fun facts: the studio originally wanted Tim Burton to direct the first Twister and they wanted Tom Hanks to play Bill. God what a different movie that would have been. 😂
Give 'em 10 points!
Same here! What’s your ig? Love monsoons and storm photography! Gonna be headed to Tucson in a few weeks to capture some storms
Go watch it in 4DX
Thanks but no Hanks
I think you just introduced me to my dream job.
I am from India. My Dad took me along with Mom for the original. Now I am taking them.

That's awesome of both them and you👍💚
That is so sweet. I hope you all enjoyed it! My parents wouldn’t let me watch the original Twister for a long time because I was too young and it was scary, but my husband and I went with them to watch the new Twisters last weekend and we all loved it.
The original was my first hollowood theatre experience with my family.
A core memory definitely ❤
I’m a resident Oklahoman! I’m so excited to see this movie. The original was filmed in my hometown including a gymnasium I used to play in. Twister is special for those from our home state.
Is Oklahoma as cool as the movie made it seem to be?
I visit by your town Reno. On my way to Tusla, this film is so close to home even as a Texan as we been through 7 tornadoes since I was born
Rewatched Twister yesterday. Still one of my absolute favorite movies from the mid-90s. Just utterly perfect. Can't wait to see this one.
Watched this past weekend and the fast pacing really stood out.
Got it on 4k watched it and it was like a brand new movie.
Glen Powell is a bonafide movie star. Dude is oozing with charisma.
B list at best
I hear they are considering him to take over the Mission Impossible franchise.
He was the real tornado 🌪
He signed something lol no way you show up

@@trhansen3244that would be an awful decision for that series. They need to just end it when Tom is done.
If I had a nickel every time Glen Powell was in a legacy sequel that outdoes the original, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s strange that it’s happened twice
That's optimistic. I don't think this movie outdoes the original.
@@asrultomenEh debatable, personally I think it's better and the original is still one of favorite 90s films. Even on it's own, the reboot is still a really good movie

an MPAA rating I'll never forget is for Team America:
"Rated R for graphic crude and sexual humor, violent images and strong language - all involving puppets"
Me and my mom bonded over the original film as I was growing up. Now all these years later we're going to see this one tonight and we're both so excited!
I had the exact same experience, I’m 25 now and I can’t wait to take take her out to the theatre this weekend, we are 100% going to the VIP theatre and getting the biggest and butteriest popcorn bucket money can buy and we’re going to have a blast!
@@animal1439 We’re seeing it in imax! I couldn’t be more excited
Sincerity is what makes ‘80s and ‘90s great. They weren’t self aware, so those movies radiate passion. For better and for worse.
You mean they were not constantly doing that post modern joke, or meta one liner etc. I am so sick of that now. The issue with breaking the suspension of disbelief like that is you destroy any chance of letting the audience get into the experience and put themselves into the viewpoint of the characters. And if that doesn't happen, then empathy is extremely low for the characters.
This film is so bloody awful, I truly am shocked that people think this is a good movie. The whole deep dark night of the soul moment consistent of the good looking guy in the cowboy hat saying 'But how much more are you going to let this thing take from you.', and the female protagonist is magically cured and wants to try the thing she literally just called 'a children fantasy' all over again at the possible expense of people's lives.. but don't worry, not this time, because while her old boyfriend got killed, he wasn't as good looking as this new one, so plot armour the audience knows will make it different this time....
The level of empty headedness this movie has compared to the first has Michael Crichton spinning in his grave at what they have done to his story/script.... I'm sorry, but there is no depth, nothing in this film at all resembling intelligence, or originality...
I really liked the twist in this movie
Definitely one of the twists of all time
Enough.
Chris grew up with Twisters
Pat yourself on the back…
What's the twist?
You have to understand that before Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt figured out how tornados worked that in the 90s we had no idea. They saved so many lives.
I was blown away during the scene with the fire nader and how striaght that trailer stayed as he was backing the truck up. That itself deserves an award.
My mom is a big fan of Twister. I can't even begin to guess how many times I saw it growing up. It's such a fun disaster film with likeable characters.
Twisters was a lot better than I was expecting. It's not as good as the original, but that's ok. The characters were good, the dialog was fine, and the special effects were well done. It feels like an old school blockbuster, or as close as we've gotten to one in a long, long time.
I live in the border of Kansas and Oklahoma. I remember when they were filming Twister all around the area, seeing where they trashed the landscape to make it look like a tornado went through, recognizing the roads and bridges in the movie, etc. it was an exciting time. As far as the weather in the movies, we just call that “Spring” around here lol.
It’s Glenn Powell’s world. We’re just living in it.
Dude's in everything atm.
I hear he is in talks to become the next Batman.

3:59 which the story of Twisters was written by Top Gunn Maverick director Joseph Kosinski since at one point I think he was attached to direct twisters during its development before leaving to do films like Top Gun Maverick.
As a kid my parents were obsessed with all of those mid 90’s disaster movies. We had (and still have) vhs copies of all those classics Chris mentioned, but Twister was always my favourite of the bunch. Twister was an absolutely perfect mishmash of adventure, humour, intensity, and sincerity that very other movies have managed to accomplish. I’m so glad to hear that the new one is a worthy successor, and I can’t wait to take my parents to the theatre this weekend.
my all time favorite MPAA description is for ninja turtles 3: for "swashbuckling violence and mild language"
The original Twister deserves a Feature Presentation video
I watch Twister at least once a year, always on a hot, thunderstormy night (must be way over 30 times by now). I saw Twister in the theater, own it on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray, and recently ordered my copy of the 4K release. Twisters has a lot to live up to, especially in terms of likable characters and an excellent soundtrack. I gotta watch it soon and see how it compares for myself.
Go see this movie friends! Turn your brain off, summer blockbuster, 90s nostalgia, crazy destruction, good ole 2 hours of fun
Nothing artsy fartsy, just munch of some popcorn and have a good time with your friend, your family, your partner, anyone
(I really loved the original so I want this to succeed)
Lots can’t do that they will automatically compare it to the original. Too many people set themselves up for failure gotta turn the brain off once you do that you’ll enjoy yourself. I use to compare films a lot and I found out I wasn’t enjoying myself.
I was traumatized by the opening scene from the original film. As an adult I recently rewatched that scene and laughed at the hilariously overdramatic sound design, from the subtle animal growls mixed in with the wind noises to the straight up laser beam sounds for the lightning.
I really want to watch this new one. Cracked up when you talked about the UA-cam copyright stuff. I wonder if chief UA-cam storm chaser Pecos Hank makes an appearance.
“SHIIIINE ON! SHIIIIINE ON!😆”
Just got reminded of this, aaaaaaand it's going on my playlist.
Great song by Van Halen!!!
Nobody watched it but Devotion with Majors & Powell was a great film.
Watched it, loved it and own it on Blu-ray. Great movie!
Twister (1996): Feature Presentation when? 🌪️🐄
Your mention of Dante's Peak, makes me want to go back and watch that movie. I watched it a bunch when I was a kid, it was an old favorite, but I haven't seen it in at least a decade or more. I wonder how it holds up as an adult.
I watched it a lot when I was a kid and it always bothered me the scene where the old woman essentially kills herself. To this day, it is the first scene I remember when I think of the movie. It was so stupid
Dante's peak is one of the best
@@LuisSierra42she was a hero. Crispy but still a hero.
Interesting that there were two volcano disaster movies released in 1997, with the other one in downtown L.A. but the better one of the two is Dante's Peak, more suspense, more spectacle, and the special effects still hold up.
Dante's Peak and Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones are both fantastic movies! Just as good as Twister 😄
I just came from the theater not 15 minutes ago. It wasn't a shot by shot remake but what they kept was good and the changes to the story also worked. I really enjoyed it.
Well done! The effort and passion are evident.
Twister is fantastic. i use to watch it with my mom all the time. It's her favorite movie.
I feel like they should have either went full on reboot or sequel. It seemed like a reboot from Kate having the same abilities Bill did, predicting the weather, but they had Dorothy in it, so the continuation of the original movie was there, yet they didn't reference any of the original chasers at all. Hugely missed opportunity of not having Kate being the daughter of Bill and Jo, even if Helen Hunt didn't want to do the movie, make it the actress that played the Mom in this one be her. It was a fun ride overall, there were just a lot of plot points missed.
I completely agree with everything you said here. This one was a huge letdown.
I am so happy to hear this!! I am set with my ticket for Sunday! Sadly no real IMAX near me, but I’ll take what I can get. It is good sometimes to not mess with what works. I’m just glad it looks to be a fun movie. That’s all it really needed to be at the baseline.
They did filming here in my hometown in Oklahoma. They tore up a whole city block to make it look real. Excited to see if I recognize anything in the film!
Tornadoes are too afraid of attacking us Texans. They steer clear.
I know Glenn Powell from Scream Queens and every time I see him I think “Chad Radwell” and that is one of the most hilarious characters to hit the silver screen ever (imo). The hubby and I saw Twisters tonight and it was a genuine good time. No political messaging, no Mary Sueing the female lead, etc. etc. It was just a good, old fashioned summer blockbuster, and I dug it.
This movie was a great theatre experience and not a bad movie by any means but I have to say if it was on TV I wouldn’t stop to watch it again ….
Twister was one of those movies that I could quote. The characters were fantastic, their vehicles were an extension of their personalities. The story itself was just perfect.
Plus Van Halen’s “Humans Being” blasting as a mix of trucks, vans, and cars bounce from flat even Oklahoma roads onto uneven backroads to catch severe weather will always live rent free in my head. That and “Respect the Wind” with wide shots of windy Oklahoma vistas lol. So so good.
As a massive Twister fan, it was everything I wanted and more. Only gripe was perhaps a little more character development, but hey, Summer blockbuster! Bring it on! "If you feel it, chase it!"
I'm so glad many people had so much fun with this movie, because truth be told, I did too! As far as I'm concerned, this is another great example of bringing back a nostalgic IP from the past for modern audiences and doing it justice by executing it properly and most effectively. Also, fun fact, the original director choice for this film was actually Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick, another movie that I also feel like did a great job regarding doing justice to another nostalgic IP from the past that you are bringing back for modern audiences. However, the reason why Kosinski dropped out of directing this film, is because he was too busy doing and filming a movie he will be directing next year in 2025, in the form of a racing movie starring Brad Pitt called F1. As a result, they got Lee Issac Chung instead, to fill in for director duty. Also, regarding Lee Isaac Chung, who I know along with this film, directed the 2020 film Minari, has already decided what his next film will be, which is an untitled love story movie starring Steven Yeun.

Such a "Movie" movie and i love it , weve been missing this type of blockbuster for years . Just unapologetic cheesiness.
The film isn't an exact reboot yes there are many Scenes exactly the same from the original, but it's still connected to Twister, and it said on google that it's not an exact sequel even though it looks like one.
It's a standalone sequel
So are you saying that unless a different actor plays the exact sane person from the original- then it’s reboot like Andrew Garfield playing spider man as opposed to to toby maguure playing Peter Parker
But if it’s a new character played by a different actor re-treading the same plot points as the original then it doesn’t count idk 🤷♀️
@geoffreytester3815 I know it is still connected to the original but since the original characters aren't in it that's what makes it a stand alone.
Just came from this movie, god I missed those kind of movies so so much. I had such a great time.

4:00 speaking of Hitman where the heck’s your review man that was a great film I loved that one and Glen Powell was super excellent in it and really hilarious as well with the outfits he wears when posing as a Hitman
Finally saw this movie today. Twisters and Top Gun, weirdly both sequels to movies from a long time ago, returned to form of having a fun time and escape reality. I wish Hollywood would do more movies like this instead of driving political ideologies down our throats.
Saw it last week and loved it
Just thought UA-cam stuff was overkill and I get today's generation. But didn't look live at all seem reason and why didn't they kiss at the end?
In the past year or two I noticed how much more often I go to the cinema to see new stuff because it seems like things got exciting again without being a bombastic IP and/or budget, and I keep thinking back on you, Chris, and not just you lamenting the state of the cinema and the death of a mid-budget movie. And now it feels like the turn happened. And now to your point about sincerity, yes, I hope there's going to be more of that, it felt very refreshing. Before my screening there were trailers for the new Deadpool, and for some movie with Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchette, which seems to try to capitalize on The Guardians of the Galaxy vibe, and both already feel outdated tone-wise. Or at least not fresh.
Thank you for both these insights!
chris, we really should have had a trailer out for your shelby oaks movie before reviews hit the net. Weird we can read reviews but still have no trailer :(
That bad, huh?
I had a wonderful time with "Twisters." This was actually my first 4DX film, and it was quite an experience. The seats moved during the action and driving scenes, there were constant mist and thunder effects during storm sequences, and that climax in the movie theater was really a sight to behold! I've never felt so involved and into a movie before, and if you can afford the high price, I can easily recommend seeing the film in this format! It takes a great movie and makes it into an experience. Great review as always, Chris, and keep up the great work, buddy! :)
I was disappointed they didn’t play “humans been” from van halen and at least one scene with Helen Hunt . Where did she get Dorothy ? Did she mention that ? I kind of missed it.
But I did enjoy the movie quite a lot
So glad to hear this movie is coming at Twisters with sincerity! The original Twister is one of my childhood favourites as well. I recently showed that film to my partner (right before they announced this sequel, funnily enough!) and she loved it. We're going to go see Twisters for our anniversary this weekend, and we can't wait 😊

I remember buying my first house in early 1997 and I had a complete (and incredibly expensive at the time) sound system installed during build JUST BECAUSE the home audio showroom was showing 1996 Twister at the time. I am also a completely irrational fan. (I actually chased storms for my first job...worked for a remote meteorological company...so timely!). Great review and look forward to seeing this new movie!
Okay, now the real question - does Van Halen's "Humans Being" get played during the movie?
Nope, there's a LOT of country music in this movie (because is located in the south)

At an early age I lived through a twister in a rural area much like the original film. I have been a fan of Twister my whole life. It is in my top five all time favorite film. I also went to Universal and rode twister ride it out and it was such a good attraction. Twisters I saw today and as a fan of the original i was worried that it wouldn't keep the spirit of twister but it totally did. Twisters has heart, comedy, drama, story, good characters, and it honors the original without rehashing. love the review
Chris,
Stop being afraid to give us your true opinion on a film. It's ok even if Hollywood cancels you. They are going to cancel everyone. It doesn't matter. Be true to yourself.
this is him being true to himself. were you born stupid
@thetrendsetter-yt7lh Ah yes, the sellout who only will review the movie he likes. Were you born stupid?
Twister has been one of my favorite movies of all time since the first time i saw it after it released. i've watched it easily approaching 100 times since the 90s. i've been super hesitant about this movie since the first trailer and finding out it basically has almost nothing, if anything at all, to do with the original, and as far as i could tell, none of the original cast. but this short review gives me at least a little bit of hope, so i'll certainly give it a chance at some point.
Lmao shelby oaks got mid reviews from fantasia where people went out of their way to watch it. One review said you didn't even understand paranormal paranoids properly and completely wasted the source material
maybe now he change his stance on film criticism to lol. We cant have good movies if we give every movie a pass and not know what didnt work. This guy is a fkg joke and disgrace to filmmaking and criticism. people giving his silly movie bad reviews are doing their job the right way and if he takes those bad reviews into consideration and learns from them then he was wrong the whole time

Twister is the GOAT disaster movie. Unbeatable.
Watched it in IMAX last week, was released in certain international areas. I highly recommend if you can to watch in IMAX for the amazing sound design. I was hooked within the first devastating 10 minutes and it kept me swept up in the genuine blockbuster-ness of it all. It has the drama, it has the comedy, it has a shit ton of tornado carnage, and genuine likeable leads. The biggest surprise though, it had a lot of heart and a fairly simple but effective through story (also great chemistry between Glenn and Daisy). It is the quintessential blockbuster movie from the 80's/90's in the same way Top Gun 2 was. Don't miss out on it! 8/10
If you feel it chase it! Two belts can't save you from a tornado!
I was 10 when the original came out. Love that movie. Lost 2 houses to a tornado. The 2nd one we lost, me, mom and dad was in it. I may go watch this tomorrow after work.
This is how you do female empowerment. Facing her fears and her trauma to save the people in the theatre.
Ya the sullen, weak, lead character ruined it for me 😂 Helen Hunt saw her father zip away and it made her charge to the storms to figure it out. Chicken little who never talks is timid and fails a lot.
As an equally avid fan of the original, I 💯 agree. I also loved that they give subtle nods to the original like showing that Dorothy became an established tech within the series, the food scene, and even had it's own "Jonas and Eddie" but took it in a different direction. My sister and I are also storm chasers (we're the "Twister Sisters" lol), and we we really liked the fact that the movie drops facts throughout, and even paid homage to a real life town El Reno that was hit by one of the worst tornadoes since Jarrel. That tornado claimed the life of Tim Samaras and his son.
