We Drove Our Van 1000 Kilometres in 1 Week With NO Plan | Loving Vanlife Europe

  • This week we start our biggest road trip yet in pretty chaotic fashion. With no route planned and no real idea of what we’re doing, we drive 1000km across Europe and end up in Luxembourg, a country we’d never planned on visiting.
Along the way we spend a few days rediscovering Esquelbeq, the very first place we ever visited in the van when we originally left the UK 2 years ago. Voted France’s favourite village 2023, we fall in love with it all over again.
On a whim, we decide to head into Belgium after that and discover one of the prettiest cities it has to offer, the gorgeous Dinant.
And as Luxembourg is just a few miles away and we’ve never been before we nip over the border to take a quick look at what’s going on there.
Join us as we get back into the routine of vanlife in Europe and loving just how easy it is compared to the UK.

It's through children and pets that we see time fly! I guarantee you that at this age now is when Ady will be properly storing her experiences; they may never be clear memories as such, but will definitely be a formative part of who she will become! And I love that your itinerary is a 'floater'... Continue safe my dears. Huggiies, YAM xx

This is so true! We really agree about the memories as well, there is definitely stuff getting stored up there. This is definitely the loosest travel plan we’ve ever had, we don’t know where we’re going to end up from one day to the next and it’s great fun! Hope you’re well ❤️

I can't believe how grown up the lodger is, crazy how fast time goes by. Hope you're enjoying yourselves.

We can’t either! We look at her every day and think the same. And it’s incredible just how quickly they develop and change at this age. Of course you know all about that 😀 Honestly it’s taken a little while to settle into it again and get used to the van but we’re loving it.

We did Slovenia in 2007 and loved it - by far our most favourite of stops. Be aware though, certainly at that time, wild camping was frowned on - lots of signs. We ignored it one night at Lake Bled and was woken up the next morning at 7am by two policeman issuing us with a fine and suggesting we use the local campsite (they were friendly though). The country is beautiful and the Soca Valley Julian Alps stunning - the colour of the water has to be seen to be believed. We did more or less the same trip you are now. You must do the Bohinj car train - an incredible experience. In Croatia we did Hvar (before it got trendy ) - it's very pretty, but I suspect other islands are just as nice. The one regret we have is not doing more of inland Croatia - since then we have seen and heard of amazing places. Don't rush Slovenia for Croatia though.

That’s really interesting, we’ve heard similar stuff about Slovenia but there also seem to be quite a few free services so it will be interesting to see how it is. Thanks so much for the tips, much appreciated. We still don’t have a solid plan so we’re going to play it by ear once we arrive and get a feel for how easy it is in a van there. ❤️

Slovenia is amazing. You can spend days there and the hikes and scenery never gets old. Plus the beer and wine are around €1-2 each. It’s great. You have to try the Prekmurska gibanica, one of the best desserts around. You won’t regret spending days there

You have to buy a vignette to travel in Slovenia. Buy it just before you cross the border.
