  • I've known tons of people that end up dropping Re:Zero due to how Subaru's Character is portrayed in episode 13 of the show. They want him to get his stuff together and stop acting so childish. Honestly if I were in a world like this, most of us wouldn't be doing so good with all the stuff that he goes through. But it's always most interesting how a character like Subaru gets dragged to such a low place and is able to grow from it, rather than being scarred by it. His attitude towards things are understandable because he's not me. I'm watching the show as he grows and it's always nice to see the way he overcomes both the struggles he's faced with tackling his enemies, as well as his own mental shortcomings that stem from the way he sees himself and the world around him.
    Much like Subaru, I'm a loser for uploading this. But that's okay because I'mma just start making whatever I want now. Don't worry, still working on the stuff I usually do. I just figured the reason I don't upload as much is due to me wanting spectacle over expression. Most of my fears of uploading specific like videos fall under the fact that most people aren't into what I'm into. Watch the shows that I watch. This'll probably have 37 views by the end of it. I try to generally make videos that anyone can dive into and end up burning myself out because I don't know how to frame it. How do I make a video for everyone? It's balance I'm just kinda done with trying to guess on. If you're reading this I'm impressed really. I never look at the description of things.
    Also, thanks for watching and reading chum.
    EDIT: well I guess the video's doing a bit better than I expected o.o

      @@Oboreru493 yeah but thats the view the public has forced on them. If you actually look into the family, youll notice how dysfunctional the astrea family is. They might have superpowers but they arent mentally born heroes. In fact, from what we know of reinhardt, he has very low self esteem just like Subaru. Reinhard had to grow up and learn just like everyone else. The tragic thing about the astrea family is that people's perceptions force even little kids in it to take up the mantle of hero whether or not they like it, and you not realising that is you making the same mistake as the public in re zero even though you have the benefit of an outsiders perspective. Astreas aren't born as heroes, they are forced into the hero role and their children made into heroes before they even have the chance to have a proper childhood.

    A lot of people want a character they can map themselves onto, especially the crowd who watch anime (though this isn't something unique to them). It's why trashy power fantasy shows do well 9/10 times even if they're poorly written. That part where Subaru is yelling at Emilia and wanting her to thank him is almost the polar opposite of a power fantasy, so people who are looking for a self-insert thing are not going to have a good time.

      Exactly. Subaru is intended to be a parody of the stereotypical isekai protagonist. Which is why some people don't like him but love said isekai protags. They'd rather be entertained watching some overpowered attractive morally upright perfect Gary Stue to daydream themselves as rather than a character with any actual depth who they don't WANT to relate to because he's like looking in a mirror (except Subaru is honestly a way better and stronger person than most of us, especially for being a 17 year old).

    i know i'm 8 months late but imma say this:
    he's a stupid teenager that **acts like a stupid teenager**. If any adult met their 17 year old self they'd think they were cringe inducing too.
    He's not as cold or logical as many of us think we would be, because he's an extremely traumatized person trying to act like they did before being traumatized because they have no idea how else to act. In his own experience, every time he's genuinely broken down or panicked or freaked out things went worse for everybody so he doesn't even have any way of trying to cope with what he's experienced. There is nobody to tell, there is nobody to ask for help, there is nothing he can do but continue to exist while remembering that time he died from being disemboweled (by the way, death by disembowelment can take HOURS and i may be misremembering but i think he had someone digging around in his guts while it happened), or remember being tortured by a person he thought was a friend, or remember getting multiple people he cared about killed because he wasn't good enough to help them and the only useful thing he could do for anyone was die so they could maybe live next time. I mean the nightmares this guy has to be having alone must be horrific, especially after the rabbit incident(s).

    and how much self worth he put into saving emilia being the only worth he has, and how much he convinced himself its all for emilia ,but its not saving emilia ,but its about saving emilia for his self-satisfaction and worth.
    This episode also gets more ad more re-contextualization from further arcs from how much promises mean to emilia to subaru's saying to yo just happen to be born into being knight because of their big dad name was projection form what we see in S2 ep 4 and this gets further re-contextualized from further arcs as julius is actually an orphan.
    I could go on and on about how this confrontation was building up,how nuanced it was and most of all how unique and kind of unseen scene in anime it is(although somewhat common in live action drama shows),but Its all about feeling and emotional impact which i think it conveys at least to those who were paying attention and were understanding.

    That scene with Subaru and Emilia at the end of ep. 13 is peak cinema. It is basically the same theme that was in Breaking Bad Ozymandias but in BB it is climax of the show, in RZ it is spicing up plot, flashing out characters with a lot of implication for story and characters. "Everything I did, I did for the family" ---- "I do it for you Emilia" Selfishness or pride comes before the fall. The dialogue and scene execution in RZ between Emilia and Subaru at the end of ep.13 was better than scene on phone between Skyler and Walter in Ozymandias. Funny thing is that ep.13 is the lowest rated episode of RZ on IMDb and Ozymandias is the highest rated episode of all time with a perfect score.

Unless you pay attention to character's dynamics, complexities and inner struggles and acknowledge the character as an individual entity and not the "entire show", you really cant appreciate this type of writing.
    But that all sums up to your tastes, and doesn't make the show bad because on a narrative perspective Re:Zero is solid, and purposefully dives into the characters inner struggles to flesh them out.

    Subarus mind can´t comprehend the fact that only HE knows that all these things happened, noone else is aware that he died AT ANY POINT, the lenghts he went to will never be known to anyone, possibly. And he will never get recognition for it.
    He is probably the most powerless creature that he is aware of. I am honestly astounded that he hasn´t sought some kind of power through some "less savoury" means.
    That´s just a natural reaction to this situation, because he is being reset, and that makes no logical sense.
    I think that is also the reason why he felt particularly strong about Rem disappearing from everyones memory.

    I'll be honest, the moment that made me drop it was Subaru just being like "I love Emilia" after Rem confesses her love and support for him. It's not the rejection itself, but the bluntness of it and the fact this comes after a nightmarish series of events for him where Rem still had his back. It made me feel like his obsession with Emilia had consumed most other facets of his person.

    • @SilverSaw988
      @SilverSaw988 5 місяців тому +1

      So, the novel goes into this scene in more detail. As it does with everything, considering well, it’s a novel. And in the novel Subaru thought to himself that what he was about to say was cruel, but that he had to say it. Subaru’s goal has always been to help Emilia reach the throne, and Rem knows that he loves Emilia. In fact, she also wanted him to say those words. Because him saying “I love Emilia” is equivalent to him saying that he wasn’t going to run away.
      He was going to run away with Rem, abandon Emilia and everyone else to a horrible fate. But then Rem managed to help him overcome his feeling of powerlessness through her words. And in order to prove that they got through to him, he had to remind her and himself what he was fighting for. Also, if it makes you feel better. Subaru even admits that he’s fallen for rem in the novels as well and that he feels like a horrible 2 timer for it. Though, it’s unlikely he’ll wind up with any kind of harem IMO

    I stopped watching the show around the episode where I believe Rem attempted to kill Subaru. It was then that I came to the realization that I have a distaste for Groundhog Day tropes, where every time a character resets time, much of the character development is erased. For instance, a character might confess their love to their love interest and you think that the story is moving forward, only to find out that everything has been reset! Moreover, due to a fixed point in the timeline, they cannot express their feelings again, which is frustrating.

    • @sigiovery457
      @sigiovery457 Рік тому

      in re zero the failed loops are usually demonstrating character traits which are negative for said characters, and are later addressed in the actual timeline. Rem's reactions to Subaru in that episode are just elements of her background coming to the surface which exist in every version of the timeline there, but they begin to be resolved when she latches onto Subaru for how he helped find worth in her outside of being her sister's replacement. There are also other events to help address her suspicion of the witch's scent. However Rem's character arc also isn't complete. Their character development doesn't reset for the simple reason that you're making the assumption this is a show where the plot points develop the characters, rather than the characters and their differing perspectives being the things which progress the plot(which is why things can happen in a failed loop without character development being ruined, because the foundations of their characters are never lost because of undone events, and often they progress due to changed events instead).

    I personally just didn't like the show because I found it hard to watch. I dropped it end of season 1, I felt like that was adequate time to see subaru grow, but I didn't see anything. The problem I have with subaru is there is nothing reedemable about him. I love watching characters grow in many other mediums, but they always have something slightly reedemable about them. Naruto, lil cringey lil annoying, but he has that never give up hard working attitude. Kazuya from Rent-a-gf, even more cringe than Subaru but I love him because he has many moments that show his kindness and how much he genuinely cares for other people, in a selfless wholesome way. Subaru on the other hand is selfish and so privileged and even after all the shame and humiliation he gets, he doesn't change, doesn't have that wake up moment, nor does he grow, and if anything rides off other's victories and acts as if he deserves other people's victories.
    I do appreciate how well they showed depression in Subaru, but I don't agree it's the most accurate description, especially after seeing Bojack Horseman, although it would be unfair to compare the two. He feels more like a Shinji Ikari, and although I was able to watch Neon in it's entirety, I def hated the show a lot more because of Shinji, and how annoying he was, and this show just gave me the same vibes.
    That being said, hopefully Subaru grows, and I think I'll give the show a second shot. (Spoilers for season 6 My Hero Academia forward) Especially because I thought Subaru was such an irredeemable character, like Bakugo from MHA, but in my eyes Bakugo has grown a lot, and that has actually made me like Bakugo that much more, he feels even more realistic because of that. I personally don't deem him as redeemed right now, but I think he's on the right path and excited to see what Bakugo turns into in the future seasons. But if Subaru really does change, I'll def give the show another shot. Thank you.

    Yeah, Subaru can be real cringe, and I get the feeling of wanting to be a hero. It's just that Subaru can't become the hero that he wants to be in other words the overpowered hero that wins the fights. Instead, he has to become the hero that brings people together to overcome obstacles, and lead them in the "right" direction, since you know he has been through the worst outcomes. But yeah, that episode was hard to watch cause Amelia didn't deserve his outburst, but in a way he deserve to let out his anger just not at her. I mean the guy keeps dying over and over again, and he really wants to explain to Amelia what he has been going through, but can't due to the curse. As someone who has dealt with depression, it can really eat you up and if you don't share it with someone it can really destroy you. I honestly believe those people that drop the show if they went through the experience of dying over and over again like Subaru does, then they would snap too. It's not really an experience that you can keep your sanity with and stay calm about. In the end, I don't think Subaru will ever be my favorite protagonist but he is certainly better than a lot of ones I have seen. Best character of show is Rem anyways.

Subaru being around her is the most surefire way to make sure bad stuff doesn't happen because if it does he'll be able to solve it by virtue of being able to come back to life infinitely.
    I disagree about him thinking he's a hero, i've only watched the first season so maybe the novels or later seasons say otherwise but I never got the impression he wanted to be a hero. Any hero stuff he does I think is just the natural result of being able to come back to life, if people in real life could come back to life the same way subaru does I feel there would be a lot more guys acting like heroes but they wouldn't be heroes they would just be confident, and that can make you look like a hero. Same with the game thing, I don't think he was ever treating the world he was in like a game, maybe in the actions he took it was like a game 'cause he could "restart" but I don't think there was a single moment he treated the people around him like it was all some game. He acts self-centered yes but he can go back in time when he dies so him disregarding what people say makes sense when he knows any possible danger he might encounter can be reversed.
    This was my favourite episode and still is even if it's marred by people who call it a "crybaby incel meltdown" and just generally not understanding what makes a good character. I tell you man that shit really did rub me the wrong way, I had to do pushups and a run to get the anger out of my system when I first read that. I slept on re:zero for a long while but it is a damn good show, guys who don't like it because subaru is "cringe" and "weak" don't know a damn thing.

    I hated Subaru so much but I still liked the show and love how much he’s been changing through it all. I consider it a classic.

    A person i know dropped it because they got tired of the show's overall structure where Subaru suffers, dies over and over until he gets to a solution/path where his friends and himself are alive. "Rinse and repeat" to them as i would assume they were thinking. It's nonsensical to me as for why someone would drop this show based purely off of that particular aspect when there's so much more to it.
