Well you wouldn't notice it because... you've lived on Long Island your entire life. I grew up in the Bronx then moved to LI for 6-7 years and the vowel differences are for sure noticeable. There's a heavier Irish/Italian influence across LI, and the way someone says "Ight" and "Island" start very close.
