  • Follow Jason as he attempts to steal the Golden Fleece from King Aeetes and enlists the help of the king's daughter, Medea. (Part Two of the myth of Jason and the Argonauts)
    --
    In Colchis, the hide of a mystical flying ram hangs from the tallest oak, guarded by a dragon who never sleeps. The only way Jason can pry it from King Aeetes’ clutches and win back his promised throne is by facing three perilous tasks- without the help of the Argonauts. Unbeknownst to the king, his daughter Medea was plotting something. Iseult Gillespie shares the myth of the Golden Fleece.

    Fun Fact: the golden fleece may not be entirely a myth. In some villages of Svaneti (a region in Georgia very close to the Caucasus) some rivers flow with a very tiny amount of gold. People use to capture this gold by leaving the fleece in the water so the gold would get stuck in it. A fleece that had a lot of gold in it shined with the sunlight and looked like it was made entirely out of gold.
    Source: my dad was raised in one of the villages in Svaneti and our entire country is aware of this myth. In fact, it's one of the most famous plays in our country.

In the version about this myth that i know (since there many of versions of every Ancient Greek myth) Medea herself was the one that had fallen in love with Jason without the interference of the gods. And yes due to Medea having probably serious mental issues she is indeed the first yandere .

    Let me explain one thing that Ted-Ed might have missed since they said one version of the story (and none of these details are to contradict Ted-Ed or say they are wrong, there are simply many versions of Ancient Greek Tales, and we don't know which one is true. These details might help with the perception and understanding of watchers):
    While the King, his son and more men set off in boats to chase Jason, Medea and the Argonauts, Medea called a flag of truce with her brother since they were the closest to the Argo. When her brother came onboard, Medea used her knife to kill him and scatter pieces of his body in the water to distract the King and his men (I think there was a law abt conducting a funeral only when the full body was present in Ancient Greece) . So the Argo escaped thanks to Medea's actions. But the Argonauts, as mentioned, were disheartened by what she did. This included Jason, and helped with the eventual separation and rivalry of Jason and Medea. Again, I am not saying that Ted-Ed is incorrect, there are simply many versions of stories since the events happened a long time ago (considering they even did, this is mythology).

    • @xeroxsaw1303

      I do have to disagree on something you said. While there are many versions of the myth, there is no “right” one because they are pretty much folktales told by diferente cultures in the Arcadian Peninsula, thus never having a “right” version.

    • @arpandey3051
      @arpandey3051 3 роки тому +5

    I have a feeling this myth was actually based on reality. The "golden fleece on a tree" is probably a reference to plant-based textiles like kapok, flax or cotton, technologies which were probably wondrous to early Greeks who probably originally wove textiles from wool and animal skins.

    One of thereasons why cutting up the body of her brother was so terrible in a the context of that time, is because without the full body their soul won't be able to move on from this world. So it was absolutely horrifying to see Medea deny his own brother, who she betrayed, the right to go to the afterlife peacefully.

    For more on Medea, you can check out Medea by Euripides that narrates how Medea ended up killing Jason's new wife and his children as an act of vengeance once they returned to Greece
