Just watched Mary Berry make a version of this cake over 40 years on a show called "Good Afternoon" and those segments were all about inexpensive recipes for busy moms. (Most of the videos are chopped up so I've gleaned my info on the show name and purpose from watching dozens of them). The busy mom version has no herbs and no zest. (The host of the show teases Mary in other segments about how she's always putting herbs in things.) It's also really interesting to see how portion sizes have changed. I've got a question about a cake my grandmother talked about during rations, it was called a naked cake because it didn't have frosting and popular for a wedding. Sometimes edible flowers were used to decorate. The only thing I remember is not many eggs were used. Any information about this would be appreciated .
Sandra Nevins - google WW2 War Cake. It has no eggs. It's like a basic wedding cake with no icing or marzipan or luxury items like alcohol etc. But it has raisins nuts etc. Hope it's what you're looking for.
Mi6Bagpuss thanks, it will give me a start. Long ago my parents cleared out a lot of stuff. Sadly old cook leaflets were thrown in the trash bin. Like canning with water bath, meat including. I do remember using paraffin to seal jams and jellies.

Celsius!! Everyone uses Celsius. Its Metric (kind of), water boils at 100C.

Purvi Dave go to a health store. They have something called 'egg free' and you can use that as egg replacement. If you can't find this, you can use flax seed instead. Also available in healthstores.
