Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell was also an underrated guitarist. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.

My best friend Eddie and I would howl out this song like we had already experienced all the heartbreak and disappointment this world could throw at us! 52 years later Eddie and I have lost touch with one another. I hope Eddie still sings this song as I do with tears in my eyes and a smile on my face remembering and laughing at our youth.

The Cash version (original at Folsom Prison) is so serious that it required Roy's lightheartedness. Once you hear Johnny Cash sing this, you have to listen to some Janis or Grace Slick to recover. Folsom Prison Blues is a heavy song. Maybe you could follow it with A Boy Named Sue.

One of the reasons why Roy Clark was a beloved entertainer was though he took his music serious but not himself.
Another country music star from the past who was a very good musician and a top notch humorist was Mel Tillis. Mel had a stutter when he talked and instead of being self conscious about it he made it a comedy part of his act and he was hilarious. Definitely worth checking Mel Tillis out.

Roy Clark had that raw natural talent many can only dream of. If it had strings he knew how to play it. HeeHaw was a laid back korny country show so there was lots of fun going on. But often during the season they would do a feature piece on some good old country playing with no korn in the mix. It was a great show to grow up with. I miss it.

I grew up watching a show here in America called "Hee Haw". It was a comedy and country music themed show. Roy Clark was a permanent member of the show and could play ANY stringed instrument masterfully.
Not to take away from Roy Clarke but "Folsom Prison blues" was originally sung by Johnny Cash in a live concert for the inmates of Folsom Prison. It was broadcast live from Folsom Prison in an effort to raise awareness for prison reform. Johnny Cash did a lot of charity work like that after he became a born again Christian (he was a hell raiser in his youth). But you should watch the whole concert, it is legendary.
