Hi Kyle, Have enjoyed watching many of your videos. And since spring is complete no. Lime to see how and when you will be trimming your fruit trees. Thanks!!!!
Hey Kyle I love your channel so much. I bought my first home recently and I only have a tiny backyard but I’m currently growing over 20 fruit trees in containers. It’s my favourite thing to do in the world. I’m buying a white sapote tomorrow. I got my first black sapote a couple of days ago. Thank you for your great channel x
@@urbanfarmstead I’ve just finally bought a bigger property so I’m going to put my many fruit trees that are in pots, into the ground. Do you have an email address that I can send you a picture of my black sapote? You’ve taught this Aussie girl everything I know about pruning and taking care of fruit trees. I can’t thank you enough.
@L3-mtDNA I grow a huge amount of fruit trees but all in pots. Black sapote, white sapote, lemonade tree, carambola, Panama berry, peachcot, strawberry guava, pineapple guava, Brazilian guava, Chilean guava, Hawaiian guava, yellow cherry guava, dwarf loquat, passion fruit, various orange, lemon and Mandarin, purple mangosteen, jujube sherwood, grumichama, pitanga, mango Glenn, mango Palmer, achacha, lychee, kumquat meiwa, babaco, various grapes. Probably more I can't think of lol. Where in Australia are got moving to? We should stay in touch!
I think I've convinced my partner to let me do tomatoes on trellises like yours next season. We have a bed dedicated to several varieties of tomatoes, and the cages we used (which are admittedly cheap ones) were completely broken down by the tomato plants. They snapped the metal in several places on a lot of them, leaving us with fallen plants. They're still producing, and we have a buttload of tomato sauce and salsa we've processed, but it's made harvesting quite difficult without damaging the plants. Your videos have given me so much useful info as an amateur gardener. Very appreciative of the effort you put into your content. It's been fun to see the production value go up here this past year. Stay safe!
I am so excited I found you! I love gardening videos but feel like hardly any I can get full value from because they are from other places in the US finally another in Sacramento!!! And thank you for fighting the fires that plague our state
Blueberries are extremely thirsty in the heat, so you might consider painted terra cotta to conserve moisture. And that vaccinium ovatum huckleberry will require full shade from 2pm on in the summer or dappled shade all day long.
Your garden always looks in great shape even when you’re gone for weeks at a time. Do you ever have problems with insects attacking your crops? Do you do anything to keep them away? If so could you do a video on what you do to keep your garden from getting destroyed by pest?
Thank you! I do get a few insects, but I don’t do specific things, just the general stuff like habitat for beneficials, keeping healthy plants, and crop rotation.
Hello 👋 Kyle… Um, just going to ask… can you PLEASE send me some of those tomatillos or the seeds “the Queen..” kind You mentioned, yellow. I can’t find them and I’d like to see if they’ll grow in Texas. I’m testing tropicals here in my new orchard and garden.
I am growing the queen of malinalco tomatillo this summer, based on your recommendation! Just got my first lantern yesterday; can't wait to try them! The seeds were from Bakers Creek.
The tomatillos are still available on Baker Creek! I notice they sometimes pull varieties for short periods, but they usually bring them back, it might just miss a year or season.
I found some organic tomatillos online, the variety you mentioned. Super excited to grow them next season. Also, in a world full of beards, be a stache! 👨🏻👍🏻
So good to see that Sapote! My huge tree I sent you a video of has been pruned but I can see lots of new blossom - just early spring here in NZ - looking forward to fruiting in May
I can't help but look forward to your videos. In today's video, I found out what jujube is. In Japan, it is called Natsume. A big one will be the size of your fist. It's so delicious, I love it too. Garden management, new seedlings, and trellis are also wonderful. I just ordered the white sapote and papaya too! I also bought jackfruit seedlings! I will challenge them from this summer! I am looking forward to your garden.
Hey Kyle, my hubby and I love your channel. Especially as we're nearby in old Roseville. We just bought last spring and are working on the large backyard field. Hubby can't wait to try your tomato trellis and I can't wait for our new fruit trees to produce and to try your fig and tomatillo varieties. Let us all know when your plan sale is; we'll definitely stop by!
Such a fun tour! Thanks for sharing a garden update. We purchased the New Girl tomatoes, Queen of Malinalco tomatillos, and Centercut squash from you and they are all thriving. THANK YOU! Your channel continues to be our go to for gardening inspiration and information. Stay cool this weekend! Also, dinners in a garden with chef friends sounds amazing!
Wow! I love all the future projects. You have given me great ideas for my own backyard garden. Keep up the amazing work; I am learning so much from you. Thank you for the update and for your service (fighting fires). God bless!
I subscribed years ago when I lived on the east coast; I didn't realize you were in Sac! We moved to a house in Folsom this past summer and I am happy to have rediscovered your channel. It is helpful to have some varieties to look for that I know will thrive in this climate-- it's quite different from where I had been gardening. Thank you!!
I thought I was unique in my obsession with finding new fruit until I started watching this channel lol Kyle, you should try mamoncillo (Spanish lime), the purple cainito and sapodilla. God my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Haven't had any of these since I was a kid growing up in the tropics.
Dang Kyle that is one mean stache! haha Great video like always. Planted some Armenian cucumbers this year after one of your other garden tour videos and one plant did amazing. Still pulling off baseball sized cucumbers almost daily. I also followed your lead on a getting a Tiger Fig, however this year it's had really slow growth. I've given it a little fertilizer but still it hasn't leafed out much. I have put my hands in the soil and the roots feel big and there's a lot of them. Wondering if you've had this with any figs? Where they root out strong, but don't put on much growth their first year?
Thanks! That can happen with a lot of fruit trees the first year. Sounds like it’s putting most of its energy into rooting which is great, then next your it should put on lots of growth
White Sapote, so good. I know when you plant in ground that first year you will pull the fruit, so the plant can concentrate on rooting. So in the containers are you allowing the plants to fruit, because the rooting isn't important yet?
Love this video and thank you for giving all the variety names of all the plants! That is so helpful. There may be different ways to pronounce jabuticaba, here’s my attempt at spelling phonetically the Brazilian pronunciation; Juh-boo-chi-ka-buh.
I'm in Christchurch, New Zealand, and also grow Early Girl as the only reliable tomato as our summers are really variable and not always long or hot enough for many other varieties to do well without a greenhouse.
Kyle your garden looks beautiful and healthy. Admire all your variety and willingness to try and plant anything. Love your Jack fig. I purchase Texas Everbearing fig, first fruit May/June and again in August really excited for this variety. Along with a Brown Turkey Fig. Replanted in larger nursery pots due to our server Texas drought and water restrictions. We are finally having rain and will plant in the ground this winter. Thanks for all your encouragement and knowledge. Really appreciate your videos. Zone 8B, North Texas DFW Hotter (than you know where) dry and dusty. Today it rained. Yippee. But not enough.
Hey Kyle. Thanks for the video! I live in your area and will be looking forward to next year's plant sale! I saw you posted on Facebook, so I'll check there in late winter and see if I can catch it. And, again, thank you for being a firefighter. We really appreciate the education and safety you provide all of us here in CA. Take care!
Love your channel. I already ordered 12 fruit trees (apples, pears and plums) and 3 European hazelnut trees. Want to grow them in pairs and summer prune for size control because they are all on vigorous rootstocks. I like the idea of smaller trees but with healthy good root system. I'll grow them more like food forest with white clover ground cover and a lot of herbs and flowers as understory between them. In spring I'll put even more berry bushes. I bought Ann Ralph's book and watched DWN videos, but yours about pruning are highly informative. Thanks.
Brazilian here. I hope you get to try a jaboticaba, it's delicious!😊 The jaboticabeira (jaboticaba tree) takes a long time to fruit, unless it's grafted, and it needs plenty of water. My grandparents used to run drip irrigation for long periods of time.
Awesome video Kyle! Loved seeing your trop/sub trop plant stash! Such fun and interesting stuff. I'm also in Sacto, so a huge thanks for teaching us about all these lesser known (to me anyway) fruit possibilities AND for keeping us safe during wildfire season & throughout the year. Excited for the upcoming garden infrastructure vids!
Newer to fruit trees and bushes so thank you for this in depth video series. It was super helpful for my planning and care taking off a new orchard when we get on to our new homestead property.
My horticulture mentor has a list of blueberries that do well in the Sacramento Valley, he’s based in Davis. Redwood Barn Nursery if you’re ever in the area.
@@urbanfarmstead It’s on his website. His website is sort of a Wikipedia type resource with a bunch of lists and articles and such. If what you see on there is too confusing you could always go into the nursery and ask him. The website shouldn’t be too confusing. I’ve spent many many hours on it and it’s pretty easy to navigate/search through.
Thanks! I did actually eat one of them and it was delicious! But then unfortunately a squirrel or other animal are the others before I could do a tasting video
As a fellow norcal resident I would really appreciate hearing how you water your fruit trees and your nursery plants given the seemingly ever present water restrictions. I have raised vegetable beds on a drip system with really thick straw mulch to try and conserve water, but am hesitant to put in any fruiting trees due to concerns for water usage, especially while getting established in-ground. Any guidelines regarding how much water, how frequently, and what water delivery method your fruit trees need in our climate? Thanks and can’t wait to see your complete raised bed transformation.
What are your water restrictions? Here the only restrictions we ever have are twice a week irrigation for front yard sprinklers. So we don’t have restrictions on drip and even if we did, I only water once a week, so that wouldn’t be a problem. I’d be pretty surprised if any place here ever made restrictions to keep people from growing their own food.
@@urbanfarmstead thanks for responding. Our city also restricts water to twice a week but doesn’t specify edible landscaping is exempt. I have chosen to continue watering with my drip irrigation with more frequency as I have found with my raised beds I need more frequent but shorter duration for my location. Do you only water your fruit trees once a week and use drip irrigation? If yes what kind of flow rate and for what duration. Just trying to get a sense of how much more water I would use. Thank you
Always good to see your updates. Can you provide links to the other Central Valley channels you follow for info and the nurseries for your plants? Thanks. It seems that most of the material and info we get is from big box options that give products and info that I would expect in the Midwest with very different seasons and growing conditions.
Thanks Kyle gonna buy some new fig trees! Keep us updated on the blueberries, live in Clayton and wanted to know which variety handles the heat the best ✌️
Yay...after pruning videos, finally I found your video with some fruits on them :) With the moustache you look like a different person. Thanks again for sharing the video :)
I just discovered your channel and have learned a lot. I added 4" x 8" boxes as part of my landscape last year. I'm in a 9b zone like you and look forward to how you grow no dig crops in boxes.
I’m in sac and had a banana that produced for years. I took it out but still have one of its babies in a pot. I do have an avocado that’s doing great 😊.
I think it’s a bacon avocado- it’s maybe 7 years old and didn’t start producing much until last year. I moved it 6 years ago and it likes its new spot better. The banana might have been a cavendish banana. Both banana and avocado are against the house and somewhat sheltered or they might have struggled more with frost. The banana did struggle with frost some years, but it comes right back.
I'd love to know how your tropicals are doing. We're probably neighbors and this past December through March was really hard on my tropicals due to all of the rain we received in Northern California and how long the cold front stayed around. Interestingly enough, only my Manilla mango and two banana plants survived. The other tropicals rotted and the ones that I kept in my greenhouse and put out in early May died because we were still getting random frosts which is uncommon for this area. I doubt I'll try to regrow my papayas since they keep rotting, but I've already started new moringa trees.
Hi Kyle, new subscriber here. Just found your channel. I live in Vacaville so not to far from you and am working on building a garden and plan to put in a bunch of fruit trees. Finding your videos very helpful.
By the way, my recommendation is loquat! and a quince tree. Japan has four seasons, and it is difficult for amateurs to grow apples and other rose plants very well. In Japan, plants of the rose family are prone to insects, and they often get sick from the humidity. I leave the apples to the pros in cold regions. Professionals make apples that are half honey and sweet in cold regions. Blueberries are also popular, but I don't like them because it's hard to keep the soil acidic. This year, I bought some tropical fruit seedlings from Okinawa, but it's cold in Tokyo in the winter, so I'm going to see how it goes indoors. I'm envious of the warm Okinawan people eating a lot of tropical fruits. lembu, papaya, jackfruit, mango, banana, longan and lychee. I'm envious of how easy it is to live in the area where you live. Do you use Amazon Japan? I don't know if you can buy the seeds, but the tomato variety called Aiko is delicious♪
@@urbanfarmstead Awesome--thanks for the reply! I just switched to the same today (compensating 1/2") for my raised beds. Happy to see the addition of subtropicals too! Your yard is going to be epic with all the diversity!
Kyle. We planted an Elberta Peach in our Canon City CO home four years ago. The tree is planted on the east side of our home (if that matters). The tree has NEVER produced even one bloom. What are we doing wrong? We have pruned twice and fertilized with Jobe fruit tree stakes. Do you have any ideas what we are doing wrong?
Hi Kyle. Greetings from central Portugal (which bizarrely is zone 9B, same as Sacramento). Came across your channel when researching how to prune fruit trees and stayed - well, for everything really. I'll be putting in my new raised beds in the coming weeks so will be excited to follow how you've been building your new ones. Particularly intrigued how you choose to trellis - arched between beds or singular...? I'm off-grid so will be irrigating from a bore hole. I'll let you know how the iron affects production
Thank you! I like The Busy Gardener and Epic Gardening, and I think it’s called The Tropical Plant Guy 🤔 he’s in Modesto CA. And there is one more tropical plant guy near Fresno. If I’m I eat I don’t watch much gardening on UA-cam.
Have your peach and apple trees fruited already?! I noticed you said most of your fruit trees have already been harvested. (Would've loved to see that too) I planted my trees before you and still haven't had any fruit on any of them. I do live in a 7b zone
@@urbanfarmstead I really appreciate your videos about irrigation earlier. Having some trouble keeping things alive with drip system in Southern California. Can you share how much water/emitters per plant you use/timing, etc details as a reality check?
@@cordeliamartinez9958 I have one .6gph emitter every foot and run it for different times per plant. But I don’t talk much about irrigation schedules because the ideal schedule is different for every garden based on many factors like soil composition etc.

Always good to see your updates. Can you provide links to the other Central Valley channels you follow for info and the nurseries for your plants? Thanks. It seems that most of the material and info we get is from big box options that give products and info that I would expect in the Midwest with very different seasons and growing conditions.
Thank you. Yes, I’ll work on adding that information here soon
Dude... I'm jealous!
Beautiful garden!!
Thank you
I almost didn't recognize you. But, that's amazing. Absolutely amazing garden.
Haha, thanks
Spartan and O'neal are two of my favorite cultivars of blue berries. If you can find a Patriot I highly recommend that one as well.
thought I saw a cop stachle starting in last video 😍🤩🥰 your a couple handlebars away from a #GOODTIME 🤪
Kyle - love the mustache!! Thank you for all you and your family do , God bless!
Thanks so much
Hi! Your profile picture is very cute! I Just decided to stop by and say hi. I hope my compliment is appreciated.
Yard goals! 😍
Thank you
Thanks Kyle gonna buy some new fig trees! Keep us updated on the blueberries, live in Clayton and wanted to know which variety handles the heat the best ✌️
Thanks! Yes I’ll definitely be sharing the characteristics of each in future videos
Yay...after pruning videos, finally I found your video with some fruits on them :)
With the moustache you look like a different person. Thanks again for sharing the video :)
Wait until you see them this summer, there will be lots of fruit!
@@urbanfarmstead ok great, Looking forward for the summer videos :)
You finally back mane.. I was waiting to see how your garden turned out, the fruit trees.
I just discovered your channel and have learned a lot. I added 4" x 8" boxes as part of my landscape last year. I'm in a 9b zone like you and look forward to how you grow no dig crops in boxes.
Thanks! I’ll be sharing lots about my new beds soon
Awesome!!! Truly spectacular
I’m in sac and had a banana that produced for years. I took it out but still have one of its babies in a pot. I do have an avocado that’s doing great 😊.
That’s awesome! What variety of avocado and do you remember which banana variety?
That’s awesome! What variety of avocado and do you remember which banana variety?
I think it’s a bacon avocado- it’s maybe 7 years old and didn’t start producing much until last year. I moved it 6 years ago and it likes its new spot better. The banana might have been a cavendish banana. Both banana and avocado are against the house and somewhat sheltered or they might have struggled more with frost. The banana did struggle with frost some years, but it comes right back.
Jabuticaba!! 😃 they need a lot of water to fruit well and sweetly! ☺️ and the sun!
You’re so awesome I just started gardening and you have shown me a lot !
I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos
Long wait is over..
🙌🏼
Sapote is amazing, I wonder if it would work in zone 7a?!
Thanks, they are mostly doing well. I post a lot about them on Instagram, but will share here soon
Everything looking awesome definitely got the green 👍🏼 cheers!😎
Thank you!
Hi Kyle, new subscriber here. Just found your channel. I live in Vacaville so not to far from you and am working on building a garden and plan to put in a bunch of fruit trees. Finding your videos very helpful.
Hey Ken, that’s awesome! I’m glad you are enjoying my videos!
it looks like you can get the Queen of Malinalco tomatillo seeds from Open Circle Seeds
Good to know! Thanks
When/where is your annual plant sale? Also do you have a video on seed starting? Thanks for your videos. They are so helpful.
That Panache Fig looks so tasty!!
Delicious!
Beautiful use of your space. How has your installed drip line with built in emitters faired? Any clogging under the mulch?
Thank you! It’s continuing to work flawlessly and I highly recommend it
@@urbanfarmstead Awesome--thanks for the reply!
I have a ton of iron in my well water, enough to turn the water orange, and my plants and fruit trees love it.
Greetings froM south sac! It’s awesome to see a content creator from my area. Keep rockin that firefighter compliant stache!
Hey, thanks!
It’s the moustache for me 👌🏻
and thanks for keeping us safe in NorCal.
I’m in Solano County 😅
Thanks!
Love your channel.
Been watching alot of videos... the tree videos are just great
are you planning to upload again?
What is the size land you have growing all those trees and plants? It can encourage those with small lots.
Beautiful Kyle! Hey, what other gardening channels do you like?
Yes, the stone fruits have. I’ll have that in future videos
I would enjoy a video on how you keep-up your potted trees until ready for planting :-)
Great job Kyle...don't know how you manage all this when gone fighting fires!!!!! Garden looks great
I have it all set up to survive with little attention if necessary - Auto drip etc. thank you
@@urbanfarmstead I really appreciate your videos about irrigation earlier.
When are we going to see your building of the raised beds.
I’m working on editing that series now and will probably start uploading the videos in January
@@urbanfarmstead Nice. I discovered your channel early in 2022 and was disappointed that after watching all of them I didn’t see anymore. Thought I would check today and realized I missed your last 3. Glad to see u r posting, in between fighting fires. I completely understand the irregular postings, my son is a fire fighter 😊.
@@terigeorge5545 thanks! Yeah, I would love to be able to post here regularly, but the videos I create take a tone of time and work to do solo, on top of everything else I do, so I post when I can. Thank you for your support!
Hi Kyle…. Please post if you ever have any of the Queen Tomatillo seeds for sale.
Which seed company do you purchase your New Girl tomato seeds from? I would like to try this variety this coming year.
As always...GREAT video!!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great Garden info! Thanks! 🍅🤌🏼
Interesting you have trouble with tomato pollen during the heat of summer. I have don't suffer that here in Australia, and we get just as hot or hotter. Maybe our varieties are different?
Love your videos….thanks for all the ideas! Could you share where you found the bird netting for your blueberries?
Thank you! It’s included, on my Amazon page that’s linked in the video description, but let me know if you have any trouble finding it.
Crazy sturdy raised beds! Should last a lifetime.
Did you stop making videos? I was looking for your fruit tree pruning videos to continue. I have an apple and a pear tree.
My new fruit tree pruning video goes live in one hour! I show my apple and Asian pear pruning in addition to many others
Where do you buy most of your exotic trees? I live local and am looking to get more exotic fruits. Thanks!
