One of the cleaness beautiful garden I have ever seen. Not just throwing pots, raise beds or buckets and buckets line up everywhere like a lot of the gardeners I see lol on their channels. This is how I want my garden to look like not just to eat but nice and clean to look at as well. Fruits trees they can be all together in one area space out they still look pretty 😁
I appreciate your efforts in our blazing Northern California sun. I’d love to see how you faired after the triple digits the past 6 six weeks! Stay cool!
Sharing and trading your harvest is probably one of the most joyful experiences in life, if you so have a green thumb. Videos like this make me want to run away to the woods and make myself a home in the hills!
I clicked as fast as possible once I see you post, again, another amazing video, love those tomatoes, most beautiful home grown tomatoes I have ever seen! ❤
YAY I'm so glad you posted again! I love everything about your garden: what you're growing, your raised bed set up, everything!! Keep the videos coming 🍅
For the overgrown okra - it really depends on the texture (if its very woody and tough, there is no saving it) but if it has just a bit of tenderness left, you can slice it and cook it down until it's soft. Another use is non-edible - you can dry the very long overgrown ones and use them in flower arrangements.
Can I just say I *love* how packed your raised beds are?! Love the dense plantings and I'm super impressed at how green and lush those veggies are given your temps. Count me in the crowd excited to see the follow up video in your other spaces =)
Thank you so much! I find that in the right situation planting close has lots of advantages. I too look forward to sharing those other areas of my garden with y'all very soon!
Kyle, your videos are always super well-thought-out, full of great info, & so easy to watch! Been watching since your garage storage, soil test, & prop station videos way back when… certainly before we ever knew we’d move to Sacramento. Since then, we’ve moved, experienced, COVID, bought a house (with a yard!), discovered the CRFG, and also discovered one of our favorite UA-camrs lives in our clime! Looking forward to seeing your little semi-tropical food forest grow up & gleaning all we can from your videos. Also to our first FigFest - Cheers!
Can't wait for your update on the orchard. I watched your fruit tree pruning video a while ago and just implemented some of those techniques in my own orchard now. Thank you for your content!
You have #gardengoals going on there. I would love to see what kinds of processes you do to preserve your yield. Or general recipes you enjoy with your fruits and veg.❤
I’ve been filming each tree as the fruit is ripe because they all ripen at different times throughout the season, but I’m hoping to film the final shots for that orchard tour video this week
I love growing okra. Please let the large ones dry so you can collect the seeds. (You can actually eat the large ones. It just takes longer... much longer for them to cook down.)
Once ripe, you can discard the husk and cook the seeds if they're still greenish. I heard that you could roast and grind the ripe seeds to make a coffee substitute.
Always impress me seeing such big and beautiful tomatoes. I just keep thinking I will get there. How often do you fertilize? Your garden looks incredible.
Thank you! I usually try to fertilize every 6 weeks, but this summer has been very busy, so only twice so far. I have a full video on fertilizing summer vegetables if you’re interested
for your over-ripe okra... let it go so you can collect the seeds. Thanks for sharing your dream come true. This is the first video of yours that I have seen, but I can see you have worked really hard and I can see you are beaming with pride. I'm looking forward to watching your other tour videos. I like your hack for the tomatoes... I doubt I will ever need it being in Alaska. I finally got my Georgia Candy Roaster to bloom as well as a couple of the tomato plants. I don't know if anything will come of it, but this year is much more of a success than I thought it would be. I'm surprised you aren't mulching... being in such a hot climate I would expect mulching would be important to retain moist soil. Thanks again for sharing. I have had lofty dreams of my own that seem to be taking forever to realize! You beaming with such joy after all your hard work... salve to my weary soul!
i love watching these garden videos. they are so beautiful. But as a viewer from Africa i cant help but notice that in America and Europe you guys are pretty obsessed with tomatoes...its fascinating.
Wow I love your garden set up! This would be my dream garden! Having a garden like that is not easy. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Love your beautiful tomatoes! They looks so delicious!
What a Thrill to see your Splendid Garden! It has been a Treat to watch it develop! Looking forward to the fruit tree tour! I learn so much watching you!
Omgosh, never heard of SunGreen cherry!!! Queen of Malanalco tomatillo? Ooh! A sweet jalepeno.. Flaming Flare Fresno chili. Hmm. Striped Armenian. So many new seeds to seek out for next season! Looking forward to the orchard and tropical section!!! ❤
Great tour -- such abundance! On the too-large okra pod question, I've sold bags of them in the fall, after allowing them to get very large and cutting and drying to a Kraft paper brown color. Folks used them in wreaths, wired them to sticks for use in floral arrangements, and even just piled them high in a decorative bowl. Not sure about all varieties, but the large, dried pods I've grown have the additional, fun benefit of being natural "rattlers": when the pods are shaken, the seeds make a pleasing sound! I've also let large pods stay on the plants until they turn brown naturally, and, before they begin to split open, I harvest after a few days of dry weather, allow them to further dry, and save the seeds for planting next year.
Yay! A new Urban Farmstead video-Thanks to you, my new peach tree is progressing fabulously (4 whole peaches on a beautifully vase-shaped structure. Have you ever grown Brad Gate's Black Beauty? I'd love to try my hand at it (mostly for the esthetics, tbh) and wonder how "diva" they are :) I allowed two carrots to go to seed over the winter- HOLY MOLY-8 ft tall, dozens of gorgeous flowers (that last weeks as cut flowers btw) and now- thousands of seeds. So excited to see your next videos!!
Thanks! That’s awesome! Yes, actually I’m growing Black Beauty right now. They are great, but I think they get a better black color in more mild climates because they need full sun on the fruit to turn black, but our full sun is a bit much
Im so happy to see someone his veggies grows so tall i thought mine is because i grow them organic with zero fertilizers. I use the village methods of using dead leaves and trees as compost thats it❤❤❤ 18:50 ❤
Beautiful! Bravo! Thank you for sharing! Everyone should grow okra. 2 things about okra…the boys eat very young okra raw off of the plant. Two, if you let the okra go to seed, they turn into a beautiful pods that can be used as decor in a bowl or on a table!
Wow Kyle you have a beautiful, bountiful garden. Cannot wait to see your orchard and tropical food forest. Wish I lived next door I know what to do with those beautiful okra. Glad you had a great vacation. Great video.
So glad I found your channel, I'm in West Sac. Trying to get my urban food forest going myself. Started with an annual garden and going to start adding trees in!
Incredible garden tour today!!! Our favorite garden so far this year!!! We learned so very much and thank you for taking the time to share the Florida weave for tomatoes!!!! Can’t wait to harvest Best wishes on your amazing garden, so happy we saw it!!!!❤❤❤
I am so glad to see you! Your videos got me through the pandemic and Nor Cal fires (Thank you for fighting them BTW). I'm in Brentwood, CA and am struggling to get my curry leaf plants to grow more than 2 feet. I can't wait to see your sub-tropical section setup, maybe something in there could help me. Glad to see all of the effort and planning you did for this garden was fruitful (bah-dum-chin).
Kyle. Your garden is blowing up. I really enjoyed the tour I’m in Portland Oregon. I’ve only been gardening for a year so it’ll be a couple years before I’m ready to even show anyone but hey you gotta start somewhere. Keep growing on my best.
Great tour! It's amazing the amount of food that can be grown in a modest amount of space. I hope this video inspires many to give gardening a go! As always, kudos to the time and effort not only in creating a garden like this from the ground up, but for the quality video! I know it takes a while to create this type of content, but it's very gratifying to see 👏
The Striped Armenian I got from you was going crazy and then paused when it got really hot. Now, it's starting back up again! I counted about a dozen small fruit on the one vine this morning! They're delicious. I got one that was almost as tall as my 11mo old daughter.
Impressive result. I’ve been watching your videos for two years. Your vegetables garden is a dream come true for self sufficiency. I always wonder how many hours a week you invest in maintaining your garden.
I’ve been looking through your videos trying to figure out how your irrigation works. You always mention it at a high level but the nuts and bolts are what is not as simple to most of us out here.
Over grown okra : leave it on the plant to turn until it dries or the skin turn to brown and then only pluck it. Let it dry on kitchen counter or under the sun, once dried open the okra, you’ll see seeds and use the seeds for your next gardening project :). You can also give away the seeds for free because there will be many many seeds. I am envious of your garden. When I get my own house with land I will grow all kinds of veggies and fruits. Enjoy gardening extra on my behalf :). If you like Indian curries, use okra to with lentils to make curries 😊
Welcome back! We too were in Europe for a vacation. I was thrilled to return and see my Japanese eggplant and tomatoes were so happy without me hovering over them. We are in El Dorado County near Folsom so your crops are perfect to follow. I’m going to try tomatillos and chilis next year. Thanks for the tips! Where to you find your seeds?
Hi, I subscribed to your Chanel because your garden without frame planters. The video 3 years ago. Thank you for the videos. Good help for the gardeners. I am not fun of planters. But thank you.
Happy to see you back. I love all your videos. Not only informative but so neat & tidy. I’m also in Sacto, no yard so doing container gardening. I learned how to prune my fruit trees from you & they are doing great. 👍
Wow, your garden looks amazing, those tomatoes 🍅 are huge 😊..I will plant more cherry tomatoes next year.. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful garden! God bless you all!
It was a pleasure meeting you at the Artichoke Farm stand the other day! Your videos are my go to whenever I have issues with my garden. Thanks for all you do!
New subscriber here. Thank you so much for these wonderful videos! I’ve learned so much in such a short period of time and I’m so looking forward to putting some of the skills I’ve learned to the test. Cannot wait to see the sub-tropical section of the farmstead. Thank as well for your service as a firefighter!
I have so many questions! You said to ask you anything so here it goes! I also live in the Sacramento area. I have raised garden beds that I have built myself. When it gets over 100 degrees I definitely have to water everyday. My Butternut squash plants instantly wilt if I don’t water everyday. How do you only water twice a week? Should I add something to my soil to retain the moisture better? I love tomatillos and want to grow enough to make sauces but have not had any luck. They produce a ton of fruit but are tiny only about an inch. I usually just get the basic tomatillo plants from Green Acres so maybe I should try a different variety. Any of the ones you grow good for verde sauce? I am so glad I found your channel since you are in the same area. Can’t wait to see how your fruit trees are doing. Thanks!
Hi Emily, irrigation schedules will be different for everyone, daily watering really shouldn’t be necessary anywhere. The problem is that when we water frequently for short durations we encourage shallow roots, because that’s where the water is. Then when the weather gets hot the soil also get hot and dries out quickly, on the top where the roots are. With deep, infrequent irrigation we encourage deep roots. Then we Ben it gets hot the plant doesn’t mind, because it’s roots are so deep that they don’t even notice the heat, and the soil stays wet for many days. Hope that’s helpful
I discovered your channel with the video on how you built these raised garden beds. Didn’t realize that you were also from Sac! So cool! Can’t wait to see more about the subtropical food forest.
I'm pumped to see the Orchard update and Sub-Tropical section. Love your videos. Keep them coming.
Thank you! I’m hoping to have both of those videos ready soon!
So happy to see a video! Where do you get your seeds?

Kyle, your videos are just a joy. Thanks for all the inspiration! Definitely growing tomatillos next year - and staking my tomatoes differently lol!!
Thank you! I’m glad you’re getting some inspiration for next summer’s garden
I can’t believe you were gone for three weeks! The garden is so healthy. I didn’t leave my garden once, and the pest pressure was crazy this year!
Thanks! It was a ton of work to create this garden, but that upfront work is now paying off huge as I knew it would!
the pests have also been awful in my tiny garden... so discouraging
First year garden is always less weeds and bugs.
He has had a garden in this space before. Do you think maybe it’s the new soil?@@kimcritchfield5796
I had so many new pests plus the old ones, but we had an unusually long, cool spring.@@yolandasotolopez
Amazing you have all that growing in such a small space. You inspire me to do something with my backyard. Thank you!

A suggestion. Overgrown okra fruit can be left to dry on the plant then harvested. You can plant seeds the following year / gift/ sell seeds.
behind you at cucumber hedge was that RED OKRA Getting old harvest small n tender && HIBISCUS FLORIDA CRANBERRY? try that with okra
Really nice garden.
Keep the overgrown okra in the plants. It will dry up and you can collect seeds for next season.

Excellent video. Love your raised beds. Maybe I asked what you have on the ground between them. Looks like DG.
Thank you! It’s pea gravel over DG. I share more about it and the full process of creating the pathways in the video linked at the end of this video
I planted purple bumblebee this year and love them.
So good!
I discovered your channel with the video on how you built these raised garden beds. Didn’t realize that you were also from Sac! So cool! Can’t wait to see more about the subtropical food forest.
Awesome! Yep, I’ve lived here for 11 years now. I look forward to sharing that soon!
