Super appreciative of the hard work that goes into this content - and not just the garden, though that's tough work as well, I'm sure! There's a tremendous amount of care in each production, from camera angle and mic placement, to editing and minding the Sacramento sun. Not only that, but I can tell that you've thought through what you're going to say... it's not just rambling disconnected thoughts. It makes for much clearer instructions and a jam-packed session of information to digest. There's easily 30+ min of content in this clip for a lot of other creators, and those of us looking to improve our gardening are appreciative to get so much information in half the time. Bravo, Kyle!
Hey Matthew, thank you so much for taking the time to share this detailed feedback and for your recognition and appreciation of the work I put into creating these videos. We’ve all watched plenty of those 30 minute videos that offer 5-10 minutes of valuable information, so when I created this channel I wanted to be sure the videos I create are succinct and quality. As a new creator I’m still learning a lot and hopefully improving a bit with each video. Thank you again for your encouraging words, they mean a lot! -Kyle
@@urbanfarmstead your videos have been great from the beginning. I used your tree pruning video once to help shape my new fruit trees, and a 2nd time to prove to my wife that I wasn’t crazy for how much I pruned 😂

Your video was so wonderful that I watched it until 3:00 in the morning! Your tone of voice is smooth and gentle, making it easy for me, a foreigner, to listen to you. Of course, the content of your conversation is organized and accurate. It's like listening to a university lecture, and it often gets stuck in my head. The actual garden looks perfect as per your efforts👌
Hi Kyle, thank you so much for the information you provided in this video. I just finished watching it for the forth time in last 3 days lololol wanted to make sure I understood you correctly. I’m so grateful I found you, I’m 100 miles north of you. It’s so nice to be in the same climate & zone I can garden with, most gardeners I’ve watched live back east somewhere. You are now my go to! Hi Christy! Thank you! I’m glad you found my channel too! I know how valuable it is to have local sources when it comes to gardening, so I’m happy to share my process and experience and do my best to answer any questions you ever have.
Kyle, you are the best! Your videos are clear, concise, professionally presented and professionally edited. I'd like to see a video on fertilizing trees, especially how and when you fertilize the fruit trees you have. Thanks!
Here in Rancho the soil is heavy with river rock which is from the days of river dredging for gold. We have built very tall raised beds and fill with native soil on the very bottom. The top 6 inches to 1 foot with Mel Bartholomew's soil mixture. 1/3 each of Perlite, organic compost and peat. It has been a great medium.
I really needed a local perspective on crops considering the heat waves we’ve been having. You should definitely grow Malabar spinach! Just sharing some of what I’ve collected. It’s heat tolerant and vines beautifully.
I love your enthusiasm for gardening! You’ve helped me on several occasions, answering my questions and your videos are invaluable, thanks Kyle you are the best!!👍😊

Hi, wow thank you so much for that great feedback! I would agree that there are not many quality vegetable garden fertilizing videos here in UA-cam so I’m glad you found mine so helpful! Yes, I add about one wheelbarrow full of compost to the top of a 4x10 bed each spring and fall. Happy gardening!
Excellent video, bro. Very tight & concise, useful knowledge & no bull. I’ve watched MANY of these vids as a newbie gardener, but not a newbie to education, and this is good education. Thanks.
I've done everything wrong fertilizer wise for my tomatoes. I just checked my liquid fertilizer's "NPK" and the nitrogen is 14, phosphorus 4, and potassium 8. I probably won't get any tomatoes this year. I appreciate the info so I won't be ignorant next year about NPK for productive summer tomatoes.
Thank you so much for putting this video out. You made it so easy to understand fertilizing my plant. My tomato’s are huge and beautiful but barely any tomatoes. Heading to the nursery to get what I need. I have been using that fertilizer from Miracle grow, that attaches to your hose. It works great…… for growing leaves but not fruits and vegetables! Apparently it is high in nitrogen!
I mixed a 5 gal bucket with liquid fertilizer to apply the following day. This bucket also acted as a weight to hold one corner of plastic covering down/ ( raised garden.) Each corner had a 5 gal bucket. The only bucket with Ice the next day was the one with fertilizer. The 3 with only water did not freeze. May be best to hold off using fertilizer until threat of frost has passed.
Thank you for that, I've been using organic fertilizer for the first time this year and I think I'm using one with too much nitrogen, which like you said was good early in the season, but now I think I need more calcium as my tomatoes are showing signs of stress and one plant is getting some blossom end rot. Also my cucumbers did absolutely nothing this year and I've never had issues growing those before. I'm going to up the calcium in my garden and see how my succession crops do. I'm in Michigan zone 5.
Debbie Bell it’s my pleasure! That’s great that you’re switching to organics! There there are certainly sone things to consider when switching from chemicals to organics. One is that the concentrations of nutrients are usually smaller, and the other is that the results/reactions will be slower and less pronounced. Over all the results are better but not seeing that instant gratification that we see with chemicals can often be discouraging. And if we use the same amounts as we were using with chemicals, we’re often not apply enough. It’s a learning process but you’ll get there and you plants/soil will love you for it! Happy gardening!

You do an awesome job explaining things! I've got some experience in the garden but there's always something new to learn, (like tomatillos)! A beginner must find your help priceless. In Canada I use Gaia Green organic fertilizers. GG 4/4/4 All Purpose and GG 2/4/8 Power Bloom will cover you for the season. A bit of extra bone meal for tomato and peppers when transplanting seedlings. Some worm castings. Sea Boost Kelp liquid. Sheep manure compost all around. A lot of our 'tips and tricks' are very similar! Beautiful wormlings @ 7:35!

Those are great looking tomatillos. The beat thing about growing your own is they are just better, more meat, more sweet, and more healthy. Once you go homegrown you can’t go back.
Hiya, just stumbled upon you and your video and both are fantastic! I, like every other person on the planet, have taken up the hobby of gardening and didn't know squat when I started. But now thanks to generous souls like you who share knowledge I feel like I've taken some summer coursework at my local community college! I see my mistake now of using a fertilizer too high in nitrogen. 😣. The Hubs keeps NOT buying tomatoes at the store bc he knows I'm growing them but I seriously can only offer the family about 1 per week. It's so bad! 🤣 No salsa in weeks... 2021 will be better. In many ways. 🍀🤞 Keep in doing what you do! Thanks for the help!
Mary Madigan Hi, thank you so much! I love that so many people have taken up gardening this summer! It’s definitely a Learning process and like anything else your skills will improve every year! My first experience growing tomato plants was a complete failure but that was about 17 years ago and I’m still learning so much all the time. We are all very fortunate to have many good resources to learn from on today’s internet.
I have a small 70 ft square garden in an urban 6a setting and i’m on my second growing season. At this point, my bigger challenges are: - tomatoes splitting (we don’t have a drip irrigation system yet, and even though were very thoughtful about watering consistency, we still have most of our tomatoes cracked) - peppers just starting to set fruit, after 10+ weeks from transplant (i almost lost fate there but they’re coming) - diseased cukes; we’ve harvested quite a few but now they’re yellowing and drying up before fully growing (we had some cucumber beattles, might have something to do with that?) - zucchinis just dead; first powdery mildew and more recently the main stems were just completely eaten by some sort of pest/larva until the plant died. :( Definitely have still lots to learn. Any advice is welcomed!! :)
In your last answer(but raised beds will out preform them every time)to my question, can you answer as to why and how will raised beds out perform "raised row beds"? My biggest appreciation for taking time to answer questions.....not too many people do this. Linda from southern TX
Question: tomatoes, to prune or not to prune suckers... what about a letting a sucker go to 2 or 4 leaves and toppin it... let the suckers grow, then stop them. Seems like it might be the best of both worlds.
we’re using more eb stone products sincd dr earth is harder to get these days.. ur fortunate to be able to ammend ur soil, our entire lot is all dg😐so we’ve been using ednas best in all our raised beds, it’s a Great soil🙂
Just recently found your videos, and glad I did! New to gardening here, and am always scouring Internet for information. Something I’ve been learning a lot about by experience... are pests. I’d love a future video from you about how you deal with ALL the pests and still manage to keep your plants thriving. I’m in central Texas, so I think we have similar weather and pests. Specifically, I’ve battled SVB this summer, loopers, and am currently in the middle of another wave of some type of caterpillars, and aphids. I’ve tried made-at-home sprays, and just tired some bt for the worms. We’ll see how that fares. I’m curious to know, with so many plants to care for, if you’ve ever lost any to pests, and what you do to prevent
Thank so much for your videos! I'm here in Sacramento also just started gardening in June with grow bags. Now I'm getting into ground planting. Curios as to what kind of woodchips your using. I heard some woodchips can take nutrients from your plant. Not sure if thats true. Thanks again. Always looking forward to the videos. On side note thanks for your service in the community with fire season. Be careful out there. Prayers to all of the fire fighters!
Aisha Cervantes thank you! I actually have a full video and a follow-up video about my wood chip pathways if you’re interested. It’s true that too much woody material in your soil can hold up nitrogen so it’s less available to your plants but that’s usually woody compost and less likely with pathways or mulch.
Awesome video! I’m literally sitting at my laptop trying to order fish emulsion when your video popped up. I ran out last month and can’t find any anywhere down here in SoCal. Thanks for that breakdown. You made it easier to shop other options if I still can’t find any.
I started growing cannibus in my garden and following those growers alot on youtube over the pandemic. I notice the organic growers tend to gravitate towards single ingrediant fertilizers namely Down to Earth products(bat guano, seabird guano, fish emulsion, bone meal, insect frass, kelp, etc). They also tend to go heavy on nitrogen early on in the vegetative stage, then when plants flower they cut nitrogen and go heavy on the phosphorus. Can I use this strategy in my garden, for example now that my tomatoes are mature can I cut or even eliminate nitrogen fertilizer and use more seabird guano(NPK= 0-11-0). In regards to the EB Stone Organics line you use, they might use something like the Fish Emulsion and Kelp you use for vegetative growth, then switch to the Ultra Bloom Plant Food for flowering.
Ramone Brown yes, from what I’ve learned and experienced, cannibus uses a lot of the same nutrients as summer vegetable plants, so you will probably have good results following those methods. I use a product called Recipe 420 for my summer vegetables and they love it!
Hi Kyle! Great Channel! I live in SD and your channel is perfect for me. I manage a large elementary school garden and my own home garden (all raised beds) I'm looking to covert my front yard from lawn to garden. How do you handle foreign tree and shrub roots? My beds always get overrun by foreign tree and plant roots. I feel like adding nutrients to the soil just encourages foreign plant roots to invade my beds and I end up just feeding the neighboring plants. The number of amendments added to the soil to feed the vegetable plants can be costly. I don't have a youtube channel to subsidize the costs of my gardens. I notice you have a large hedge and two large trees on the other side of the fence. How do you feel about the amount/costs of adding amendments to your soil and the roots of invading plants in your garden? Thanks! Great Work!!
Hi Kyle. LOVE YOUR VIDEO!! VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND DETAILS. I heard you mentioned in the video that this "raised row bed" from the ground was temporary because you are going into the "raised bed" way of gardening. Is there a reason why you are switching? Is one way better than the other? I'd like to start with the best way. Linda from southern border TX
Hi, thanks! Yes I’m building raised beds to grow in this summer. In grounds rows are affordable, effective, and easy, but raid beds will our preform them every time.
Hi, i just want know, from your experience is cow manure on its own a good substitute fertilizer to using the commercial fertilizer? And is it enough for plant health or i still need to use the commercial fertilizer? Thanks, great channel i always look forward to your next video. Keep up the good content.
Hi, ow manure can be a great source of soil nutrients, but content and quality varies so it’s impossible for me to say for sure. Many people find success with it, and many others choose not to use it. It’s certainly worth trying if you have access to some.
Amazing garden. What do you do with all those tomatoes? Do you all can them? Sell them? or give them to friends and family. I can't imagine having that great of a crop! Thanks for sharing your gardening skills with us.
Well explained thanks. I live in a high rain area and need a lot of nitrogen. Now I have all this foliage and no flower or fruit. Thanks for the help. I know what I need to do now. Lol
Strong kong 7 I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! I haven’t grown onions in a while but I grow lots of garlic and I use liquid kelp when I Blanton in fall then through winter.
Great video! I’m still learning more on fertilizers. Would it be wise to change fertilizers? I just started my veggies last month and I used a 5-7-3. They are growing well. Some of my tomatoes are starting to grow. Since it’s been a month can I re-fertilizer to a 4-9-3 fertilizer? I’m using organic ones. I don’t want to over use nitrogen but knowing the phosphorus is more needed for the flowering stage. Or is my 5-7-3 one still acceptable? Thanks
Thanks for such a great and informative video, some of the best I've seen. In the beginning if the video you mention a 5-5-5 fertilizer but I did not see an explanation of when you use it. It seemed that you primarily use the 4-5-3. So curious to know what the recommendation of the 5-5-5 is.
I love gardening n like growing vegetables in my garden I m happy to reach u I really like ur videos very interesting n informative I like the way you describe things in a simple n easy way I just want to know how much money u spend on an average per month
Farhat Abbasi thank you so much! I’m not sure why you’d want to know how much I spend on average each month for our garden because among other factors the cost will vary a lot with us, so I’ll just say that if I was to sell any excess produce I would make on average 5x in frofit what I spend to grow
Hi Kyle. Thanks for all the videos. I've applied many of your ideas to my own Sacramento back yard garden in the past year with great success. What are your thoughts on mulch in the garden? As you know, the summer sun is brutal here. I've benefited greatly in terms of moisture retention with straw mulch, however, I find it to be a huge pain to clear off the straw every time I apply fertilizer for my heavy feeders (and also for bed flips). Any tips on an efficient way to apply non-liquid fertilizers through a mulch layer? Is mulching worth it in your opinion?
Hi Brett! That’s awesome, thanks! I think mulch is important in every part of the garden, especially in warm climates like ours. I use different mulch in different parts of my garden. In the vegetable beds I mulch with compost.
Your video popped up in my thred and ive already watched 3 videos! Just subscribed👍🏻 and love the look of your garden. Looking forward to checking out your other vlogs and learning from you!🌱 Blessings from Southern California

Watching here in the Philippines.. am into gardening too.. your vids are useful and helpful
Narciso Cardenas hi! Thank you so much! I’m glad you are finding my videos helpful!
Keep in doing what you do!
Really appreciate these videos, can you please make a vermicomposting video??
Thank you! Some day I will
I have a small 70 ft square garden in an urban 6a setting and i’m on my second growing season. At this point, my bigger challenges are:
- tomatoes splitting (we don’t have a drip irrigation system yet, and even though were very thoughtful about watering consistency, we still have most of our tomatoes cracked)
- peppers just starting to set fruit, after 10+ weeks from transplant (i almost lost fate there but they’re coming)
- diseased cukes; we’ve harvested quite a few but now they’re yellowing and drying up before fully growing (we had some cucumber beattles, might have something to do with that?)
- zucchinis just dead; first powdery mildew and more recently the main stems were just completely eaten by some sort of pest/larva until the plant died. :(
Definitely have still lots to learn. Any advice is welcomed!! :)
In your last answer(but raised beds will out preform them every time)to my question, can you answer as to why and how will raised beds out perform "raised row beds"?
My biggest appreciation for taking time to answer questions.....not too many people do this.
Linda from southern TX
Too many ways to list here, but I bet you could find many of long articles discussing this. Happy gardening Linda
First I like your garden lay out. How long are your rows? And how far are you spacing tomato plants thanks
Doug Joly thank you! The tomato rows are 10’ with 3’ row spacing and 18” plant spacing.
Excellent job on the presentation of very helpful information. Thank you for sharing. Keep up the great work. John Ellis @ Aldie, Virginia
Thank you
Question: tomatoes, to prune or not to prune suckers... what about a letting a sucker go to 2 or 4 leaves and toppin it... let the suckers grow, then stop them. Seems like it might be the best of both worlds.
That’s really a matter of preference and how you are trellising your plants
Wonderful video and garden, Kyle.
Thank you!
we’re using more eb stone products sincd dr earth is harder to get these days.. ur fortunate to be able to ammend ur soil, our entire lot is all dg😐so we’ve been using ednas best in all our raised beds, it’s a Great soil🙂
Southern California Gardening awesome! Raised beds are great! I’m hoping to get mine in by next spring.
It’s true that too much woody material in your soil can hold up nitrogen so it’s less available to your plants but that’s usually woody compost and less likely with pathways or mulch.
keep doing what your doing we live near jess from roots and refuge ~30miles!!!
Hi Kaylea, thank you! Jess has such an amazing garden and does a wonderful job with her channel
Awesome video! I’m literally sitting at my laptop trying to order fish emulsion when your video popped up. I ran out last month and can’t find any anywhere down here in SoCal. Thanks for that breakdown. You made it easier to shop other options if I still can’t find any.
The Busy Brown Angel thank you so much! I’m glad you found my video so helpful ✌🏼
Urban Farmstead you’re welcome
Lol
Great video! Do wish you would mention fungi when mentioning soil health. It’s necessary for good plant growth.
Thank you for sharing this feedback
He does mention the fertilizer contain mycorrhiza. But yes, very important.
Beautiful garden and very helpful tips 👍
Aybee's kitchen garden thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it
I’m also in So cal zone 9b. So glad I found your channel! Such great info 😀
Awesome! I’m glad you found my channel too!
Great video 👍 Thanks for the detailed information
likhitha p thank you!
Hi Kyle, Your doing an outstanding job! my question is do you prune your tomatoes? They look so awesome.
Really enjoyed the video, Thankyou 😃👍🏼
I was also wondering what a good fertiliser would be for onions 🧅
Strong kong 7 I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! I haven’t grown onions in a while but I grow lots of garlic and I use liquid kelp when I Blanton in fall then through winter.
Great video! I was hoping to have some info for onions and potatoes too. What type fertilizer can we use for them?
Thank you! I don’t grow either of them usually, but a balanced organic fertilizer should be fine
This video was so informative. Thank you.
Oh my 💕you have an amazing garden ❤️😍
Thank you!
Your videos are so informative! Thank you 😊
Would you add all this in a Back to Eden style of garden as well?
You're amazing 👏 thank you for making these videos!
Exalent wake in the garden thanks a lot. My question is that,is amoniam sauphety fetelizer best as tomato top.
Thanks
You are really a legend💪💪 watching from Philippines 👌
Lhiel Mark Ricablanca I’m really glad you are enjoying my videos. Thank you for watching!
@@urbanfarmstead thank you also for making awesome vlog🤘
Lhiel Mark Ricablanca it’s my pleasure!
Wow I’ve been fertilizing all wrong. Thanks for the great tips
Happy to share
is that right ? i cant believe my eye its takes less than 5 month to grow like that !! that great
Tareq Abu Kharma yes, in the right conditions they will all thrive. Thank you!
I do sometimes use it, and if could be used as the primary mid summer fertilizer
@@urbanfarmstead thank you for getting back to me ☺️
I love gardening n like growing vegetables in my garden I m happy to reach u I really like ur videos very interesting n informative I like the way you describe things in a simple n easy way I just want to know how much money u spend on an average per month
I like to watch your videos thanks for sharing
Jobille Cawaling thank you! I’m glad you are enjoying them!
I watched some of your older videos and almost shat myself when the intro started. This newer one is sooo much better volume :)
Also a great video :D
Therese T thank you for sharing this very blunt but helpful feedback. I’m still very new to creating UA-cam videos and learning a lot with each one.
Do you mulch your tomatos? If so, with what? Do you move the mulch aside, fertilize, and then replace it?
Love your videos!! So if you don’t till after the initial time, what do you do each year before replanting your garden?
Your video popped up in my thred and ive already watched 3 videos! Just subscribed👍🏻 and love the look of your garden. Looking forward to checking out your other vlogs and learning from you!🌱
Blessings from Southern California
kimberly guerrero hi, thank you, I’m so glad you are enjoying my videos! I’ve been sharing my garden and process on Instagram for years now so it’s fun to be in this space creating longer videos. Thank you for your feedback and support.
@@urbanfarmstead I'm sorry I didn't find you sooner. But Im glad you have continued to make content!
kimberly guerrero I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned, and always learning more each season.
