- While we’re still in level 4 lockdown here in Auckland, New Zealand, we figured it was a great time to be trying New Zealand foods for the first time! And we need an excuse to eat the treats we would be eating anyways. We’re trying New Zealand candy and desserts, and some Kiwi classics foods.
To list a few, we’re trying: Marmite on Weetbix, Frozen Pineapple Lumps, Asparagus Rolls, Fairy Bread, Whittaker’s Chocolate
Anyways, thanks for watching!

Carrots yum with the kiwi dip
Fairy bread is kind of childhood memory stuff, tastes better if there's a hundred childhood special days behind them. Well done on the lollycake.
I figured that was the case! And Billy says thanks ☺️
Yeah fairy bread is a nz iconic childhood food 🤣🥰it’s meant to have butter/marge and 100s and 1000s sprinkles all on them, it’s yum with peanut butter and Nutella too with the sprinkles
What's wrong with you goodie goodie gundrops is the best
Pineapple lumps don't freeze them they are better out of the pack
Mist nzers don't eat kapiti ice cream cos of the cost
when you said thats not enough milo i lost it, fuckin hilarious lmao. it's basically a childhood tradition to add like 6 teaspoons of milo when mum isn't looking haha
I tried it again with the amount I thought was good and it was actually half of the cup lol 😂
Cookie time cookies: two of them. 30 seconds in a microwave.
One on the bottom of bowl with bottom facing up. Scoop or large slice of ice cream of preferred flavour (for me, choc or French vanilla). Second cookie on top, bottom facing down.
Only way I eat them now. Hot melted chunks of choc with the crunch of the cookie and the cold of the ice cream.
Oof that sounds incredible!!
Cool, good stuff. Was so happy to see you guys like the spaghetti on toast , lollie cake and of course our chippies and dip. I'm home sick now. Greetings from Slovakia
That sounds like a fun place to be living!
Warm carrot cake and French Vanilla Ice Cream - yum
That sounds incredible! Will have to try that soon :)
Kiwi dip is awesome yesss 🙌🏼
Truly a masterpiece 🤤
You guys are too cute - I love seeing New New Zealanders getting involved in our weirdness
We enjoy it all! After reading these comments there are so many more weird things we could experience!
With the spaghetti on toast part: the optimal way to have it is to cook the canned spaghetti in a pot on the stove with about 100ml of milk, and with the toast, as soon as it's popped outta the toaster use butter instead of margarine so the butter melts into the bread from the heat of the bread and the hot spaghetti
I’ll keep it in mind for the next time I never make it 😂 all jokes, but really I hate the sponginess of the canned noodles. I like fresh spaghetti on toast!
Great to see you trying some kiwi classics. And superb baking effort. The dip is even better if you use French Onion soup mix. I wonder, did you bake the cheese rolls, because they should be grilled. They should be golden brownish. Also you need to get some Jaffa's (lollies). When we still had Cadburys in Dunedin, we would have Jaffa races down Baldwin St (steepest street in the world) once a year. And they are made no where else so very kiwi.
We did bake them! We’ve had some amazing cheese rolls from cafes so we know what we’re missing 😂 and we’ve had Jaffas! We tried them in our first taste testing video 😊 they grew on me over time!
Looks like you had fun - yay
Yes we did! And a day of stomach aches 🤣
Try the asparagus rolls with light grain bread and spread with cream cheese instead of butter.
Oooh cream cheese sounds good!
I was going to suggest this too. In my experience most things are better with wholegrain breads - don't think all kiwis like white bread exclusively.
@@Becca.Loveless Cream cheese with pepper and a little lemon juice (or a lot depending on tatse) or even your favourite Mayonaise
I was. Told by American couple , they would threaten there kids if they were naughty ,out would come the marmite
Lollie cake is my favorite!
I can eat so many slices in one sitting 😂 scary!
please try a deep fried moro bar from the fish n chips shop
We sometimes go to try one and then I think about the health of my heart and decide not to go 😂
Licorice Allsorts! Whittaker!!Pineapple lumps!! 😚
All incredible!!
Nice job on the lolly cake bro, it looks good.
He did an amazing job! Also insanely good!
Try "lewis road creamery chocolate milk" it has Whittaker's chocolate in it!!
What! I will be buying this next time I'm at the grocery store!
Try the Puhoi Belgian Chocolate, it's even better,a lot more expensive, but worth it.
Whittakers chocolate is the best ever in nz
Yessss Whittaker’s Lewis road creamery chocolate milk is bomb asf!!!! 🤤
Whittakers chocolate is nz made and owned and best in the world 🤣🤣
Hi, for the milo no one does 3 teaspons more like 3 Table spoons. also had a tea spoon of sugar x
Haha we learned. It’s much better with half the mug full of Milo 😂
Tim tam slams are the best
Very true. Gotta get some more!
Def butter toast while hot so it melts lol it looked so cry 😂 well done on the baking 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks 😂
fairy bread is eaten as a kid at birthday parties. it is also an Australian thing.
I think if I was a kid I would love it considerably more.
Many year's ago when i was a little boy i used to think other kid's that ate fairy bread were weird....but then again - as a kid i used to eat tomato sauce sandwiches. lol
Damn that's rugged 😂
u good?
Actually lolling right now 😂 I'm imagining you to be the popular one at birthday parties, in the corner with your tomato sauce sandwich 🤣
My mother used to send me to school with tomato sauce sandwiches. Absolutely hated them and usually threw them away - they weren't a swappable commodity.
Sauce sandwiches are just the best lol
The jelly tip chocolate if based on jelly tip ice creams
We needed an excuse to get a Whittaker’s bar 😆
Tim Tam slam is an Aussie invention lol. Can't be taking away our neighbour's things lol😉😉
Haha I give them all the credit now! I didn’t know that at the time of filming
The trick with Milo is to get it well mixed and for me I do the Milo first then depending on weather you want a hot drink or cold you do this a little different . For cold put just enough hot water to cover the Milo then make a Milo soup almost and then mix in milk or if you want hot then heat the milk up first then pour it into the cup with the Milo and if you really want to make it good for the hot kind put a small hand full of mini Marshmallows into the hot Milo hmmm so nice as they melt into the drink . Damn I want a Milo but I am 9500 km from New Zealand damn it :(
We like Milo now 😂 I think maybe it just took a few tries and adding a lot more of the powder.
Hi i am from new zealand and i love all of the food you guys tryed
I think everything we didn’t like in this video we do like now!
Kudos on your baking. :-) You did a great job .
All Billy! He's the baker out of the two of us :)
Goodie gum drop is for the kids mostly, and even then it's a love it or hate it type thing
Pure hatred from me 😂
@@Becca.Loveless same
Try putting the jelly tip chocolate in the freezer. The jelly will freeze and will still be frozen once you've sucked through the chocolate or do what I do and crack it open with your teeth to get the frozen jelly. It's my favourite bar of chocolate now.
Oooo that sounds really good. Have to get another bar now…
I love asparagus in a sandwich
We will do fresh asparagus next time, if we ever try it again.
Can’t go wrong with New Zealand ice cream
True!
As a kiwi there's a few things you have done incorrectly. A cheese roll should be toasted more and buttered on top. A cookie time should be warmed for 30 seconds and eaten with a cup of Milo, tea or coffee, you also can't compare a cookie time to a home made one as they are two different things. Your toast was undercooked. A Milo is more likely to drunk cold whereby you eat the cold Milo on the top and then drink the milk. Fairy bread is normally eaten at a kids birthday party. Spaghetti on toast is also something that you normally have as a kid. The adult alternative would be baked beans on toast sometimes with cheese.
Thanks for all this 😊
i love asparagus rolls
Not many people say that! 😂
Cookie time my fav
Not my fave 🙈😂
@@Becca.Loveless well u disappointed me lol but don't microwave the cookie time just eat it
Try fresh asparagus cooked in salted hot water for few minutes then drain and pat dry and put it on fresh white bread while still warm with real butter 🧈and a pinch of salt and pepper, roll up and eat.
I love asparagus! Just not sure about the white bread part. I need to try them again sometime!
Mallow puffs are not lowest rung lol , mum makes asparagus roles with non tinned asparagus and cheese and grill it ! wrapped up yummy, the Lollie cake looks amazing well done
I made the asparagus rolls the classic way! According to Kiwis 😂 and the lolly cake was so good! Like, too good.
Lol...The weet bix challenge...
If you can eat one whole dry weet bix in in 60 seconds without the aid of any liquids... you're a legend.
I want to try this now..
Millo. 4ts millo, 2ts sugar, 3/4 boiling water, 1/4 milk. Best way to make it. Best way to eat weetbix , warm milk, 2ts sugar, 4ts millo, 3 weetbix bricks. Mash all together and enjoy Chocolate porridge.
I'll try the milo like that, but not sure about the weetbix 😂
Weet bix with butter and marmite is bomb asf!!
It’s surprisingly not bad! Just quite the mouthful!
have you watched the movie "boy" if not then you should
Yes, a couple times! It is so good!
The 70's called they want there Asparagus Rolls back 🤣. That Kiwi dip is a "don't knock it till you try it" l poo pooed it for years then one day l made it and OMG yes yes yes l was hooked, it's so simple and so good. My NZ Friends holding out on me, lve never heard of an Afghan but since seeing you guys try them and Googled the recipe ld love to make them, same as the lolly cake that looked so good. Goody goody gumdrops are a no for me also. I think an extra Suitcase might be needed (carried on board "for the Baby" of course😉) full of Whittaker's chocolate to take back to the US that Chocolate is life 👍
We have full plans to come back with a suitcase of Whittakers and RJ’s licorice! 😂
The asparagus rolls have a lot of younger Kiwis saying they’ve never heard of it lol. And kiwi dip is so good! Not the healthiest, but so addictive 😍
Fairy bread is originally Australian but it's a classic
Lol it’s a very weird concept to me!
Try ready salted chips with the dip
That sounds amazing!
Asparagus rolls, the staple of every morning tea shout in offices throughout the country 😁
Really? Never seem them before at any work thing
@@shaunmckenzie5509 it was a big 70s and 80s thing.
I love that asparagus rolls were such a thing 😂 Also kind of glad they're not really a thing anymore 🤣
@@Becca.Loveless 🤣🤣🤣
@@Becca.Loveless I loved them, always seemed to be plenty of them for me to eat.
GOODY GOODY GUMDROP is my childhood lmao
More for you! 😂
You need to try spread white bread with butter or margarine then marmite or Vegemite and potato chips yummmm
Anything with chips on it! This sounds great!
Your Lolly Cake and Afgans looked good
Need to make more now!
Spaghetti on toast: Grate some cheese on top and grill(broil?) in oven till cheese melts and slightly browns. I don't even bother heating spaghetti beforehand.
Good to know! Thanks for the tip 😊
I think every kiwi girl has had a burger ring engagement at this point :D
🤣
You need to have the goody goody gumdrops with marmite.
That sounds exceptional!
Yay yous uploaded! My new favourite vloggers from Nz 🤍🖤
Wow! That means a lot to me 😊 Hope you enjoyed the video :)
Great looking Afghans, you need to try peanut brownies.. Home baked
Asparagus rolls can be for anytime not only funerals. Sashimi rolls are nice
Other Maggi soups dips are good for for chippies or veg sticks
New world and Count down brands hot choc are great
Whittakers peanut butter are like reeves peanut nbutter and jelly is yum too.
A jelly tip icecream is great
Soft pineapple lumps are better
Spagetti sandwiches.
Missed Vogels and whole wheat beat when I I went to US.
Try hokey pokey icecream
Love hokey pokey! And vogels. And soft pineapple lumps 😂
Fairy bread is for little kids 😉 wheat bix with butter and vegemite was my go to snack after school....and milo milkshakes but you need to use alot of powder. I love tinned asparagus rolls. It was a staple at any function when I was growing up. Introduced them to a friend in the UK and she just didn't get it 😂 Kiwi dip is legendry. The Afghans look good 😀 he even got the walnut on the top. Alot of these things were invented because it was all we could get. You had to be creative if you wanted something different.
The Milo milkshake sounds awesome! I agree with your UK friend about the asparagus rolls 😂 and that’s a really cool and unique way to create food!
I'm a New Zealander and I'm doing the same thing too. I been away for 38.5yrs. So far Whittaker chocolates, has taken the lead.
It’s definitely my favorite so far!
@@Becca.Loveless Sweet as. This is from the joke I heard you say when you mistook that saying for something else. And it was a pun on the chocolates.
PS. You are supposed to microwave the CookieTime cookie, still in the wrapper, that helps soften it up.
Yes, you are right. A lot of Kiwi foods and recipes are quite specific with how they are supposed to be prepared and eaten - and we get a little almost shocked when people "eat them wrong", lol.
For instance: The amount of Marmite (with butter) to put on a slice of toast. As natives, we absorb the correct ratios for these things as children, and then just assume it is all obvious.
The other example of this is Jaffas and Pineapple Lumps.
They aren't supposed to be bitten, you just pop them into your mouth whole, and then suck them for a while until they warm up and go soft. Then you can start chewing.
Whoa! I would have never thought to microwave the plastic. That feels wrong haha.
I love how specific and particular Kiwis are about their food. Everyone is so passionate about it, and there's such a strong identity around it 🤍
Or put the Pineapple Lumps in the fridge so the centre goes crunchy.
@@Becca.Loveless Microwaving the cookie in the plastic wrapper keeps the steam in which softens the cookie & melts the chocolate. By the way; The original Lolly Cake recipe uses Fruit Puffs so try making it with those sometimes.
Yoo you guys should try our big ben pies mince and cheese
Sounds delish!
Hi guys! Your responses seemed spot on to me! In my opinion, there is nothing special about cookie time cookies, burger rings ARE salty, spaghetti IS soggy, crunchies ARE a weird texture, lolly cake IS very sweet (I do like all of those foods). I’m not keen on Milo. It was a staple when we were kids. They changed the recipe a while back and as I recall, there was a public outcry. I think they changed it back after that. You’ll never go wrong with Whittaker’s - you’re right! Asparagus rolls are good with some homemade dressing (sweetened condensed milk mixed with malt vinegar) and some pepper and salt. Also, we used to eat fairy bread as kids with butter and honey on the bread, so the sprinkles really stuck. Great job on the afghans and lolly cake! Love your vibe, love your channel (just new to your channel, have only watched a couple). Really appreciate the way you’re exploring and embracing kiwi culture. Hope you’ve been ok through lockdown. Take care! Ka kite! [kah-key-tay]
Thank you so much for your comment, and validation that I didn’t offend everybody’s childhood memory of these snacks 🤣
We are loving everything here, can’t wait to be out of lockdown and exploring again.
They apparently did change it back but its still totally different. Massive marketing blunder on their behalf.
I agree I dont rate the cookie time cookies either
I’d rather make home made.
I think the asparagus rolls are better with cream cheese...well done you guys! Ooh love lollie cake love!
Thanks 🥰
“Why would you make these for a funeral?”
Because you’re supposed to be sad 😂
Haha well they got it right then!
Oh my God, Marmite on Weetbix, asparagus rolls, canned spaghetti on toast! - are you two masochists? - you deserve medals LOL.
Haha just doing what everyone told us! 😊
Try freezing your Moro Bar and it5 goes even chewier its great.
Good to know!
I try licorice all sorts maybe instead of just black licorice
That would be a good one to try. We’ve had the raspberry and chocolate, super yum!
Some put spreadable cream cheese on the asparagus rolls with lashings of butter
Maybe if I’m brave enough I’ll try again someday 😂
You did the pavlova wrong too. We always use real whipped cream from a bottle and not from a can
Haha thanks for exposing me 😂 I'm planning on making a fresh pav for Christmas with proper whipped cream :)
Not sure if you guys have tried meat pies but growing up we used to scoop the meat filling out with chips burger rings were one of the chips we used but twisties were better 😁 just remove the lid of your pie and take the chip and scoop the meat and eat 😊
Lol that sounds awesome! Unfortunately we’re lame vegetarians so we’ve only ever had veggie pies. Still amazing 😊
I'm a kiwi living in Texas. You guys are awesome trying out our kiwi grub. When I moved to Tx sausage gravy and biscuits was weird to me 😆. White gravy...unheard of in NZ. Chicken fried steak got me so confused and smothered with white gravy...what??? Now I love it
Woohoo! I'm from Texas! I miss eating biscuits and gravy. I need to make a veggie replacement sometime 😊
Cookie Time cookies aren't that special
Spaghetti on Vogel's toast is the adult version. It's definitely a comfort food, or something you have when you're sick.
I get the appeal - it’s so quick and easy! Can’t get past the squidgy texture of the watties noodles. And Vogel’s bread is the best!
Milo. Have milo. White sugar a teaspoon or two, little bit of milk and then hot water from jug
I love Milo now lol
OK, please tell me you didn't do all of that in one sitting!!! I love Baked beans on toast too and you eat it with a knife and fork, not just a fork. I love asparagus rolls but then for me it's a memory back to my childhood. Most of that food I don't eat but probably did when I was young. I'm glad you enjoyed the Kiwi onion dip, it's always a go to for us in the summer!
Nice with raw carrot.
Yes we did! We are very...talented that way. I don't even want to tell you how quickly we ate all the leftovers of everything 😂 I love the idea of beans on toast, but I feel like I'd rather make them myself because I assume the Wattie's baked beans will be soooo sweet. And that dip was so good!
I bet! It didn't last long enough to pull out the veggies 😂
@@Becca.Loveless pro tip add cheese to the baked beans on toast i dont eat eat anymore but when i did i would add cheese
Not a common Kiwi food .. but a sandwich shop near Wellington railway station used to sell yummy onion and pineapple sandwiches. Raw salad type onion and I suspect the pineapple was the tinned variety as it was quite sweet.
Sold with white bread but experiment with sourdough or whatever.
No reason not to use fresh pineapple I guess.
I've never heard of this combo before! Sounds intriguing.. But my favorite sandwich combos are the weird ones :)
Please try sliced cheese over toast with pickles on it. It's so yummy. I can't eat spaghetti from a can or baked beans.
That sounds like an amazing combo!
Awesome vid guys!
I feel the same about the asparagus sandwich, goodie gumdrop ice cream and cookie time.. not a fan😖😖
Haha they’re not great! The rest of the stuff 👌🏻
Grill your cheese rolls turning them over till golden brown then spread butter on them yum!!
We’ll keep that in mind for the next time!
I’m from Canada and that marmite or vegemite …..oy…until my daughter said it tastes like blue cheese, which I like. Now it’s vegemite on a bagel with avocado.
On a bagel sounds awesome! I'll have to try that.
The majority of these foods are Australian, Tim Tams, Burger Rings, fairy bread, Jaffas, Weet Bix, Anzac biscuits, Milo.
You’re right!
Tim Tam slam is Australian hehe
We realized a ton of these things are actually Australian! Whoops 🤷🏼♀️ We tried 😂
Good job on the part 2 of your NZ snacks, and so cool that you tried out the tips n suggestions so it's a two thumbs up for this video 👍👍
Thank you, we really enjoy trying everything!
With the milo, use 5 or 6 tea spoons instead of 3. It'll taste much better
Yeah I’ve realized it’s good with half the mug as the measurement 😂
i don’t like fairy bread but love lollie cake
Lolly cake is pretty great! Fairy bread is kind of..nothing.
Asparagus rolls must be a north island thing because me and my boyfriend are from the south island and have never heard of it
That’s funny! I think they are an older generation thing, apparently eaten at funerals :)
A cookie is associated with chocolate chip. ALSO, cookies are associated with soft cookies like subway cookies. Literally any hard cookie is a biscuit. Hopefully that helps 😊
This actually makes good sense! Thanks 😊
try rocky road, kiwi fruit and french toast
and smores
We have all of these in America, although our concept of a smore is slightly different.
Fairy bread is Australian!!!
Good to know!
Use done an awesome work New Zealand b proud of use 🇳🇿
🥰
The Afghans look amazing 👌
Thank you, my husband said the recipe was very easy.
Try Vogel bread - so yummy
Love it!!
If you cook meatballs after they cooked add the spaghetti that will taste good
That would help make it a more balanced meal! Bet that’s pretty tasty.
hi guys ,a suggestion try avocado with creme n cookies n off course tea ,wish u healthy life🥑🥑🍶🥯🥨🫖🍵🍽
Yum! We’ll have to try it out!
#1 you have to eat the kiwi dip with "salt n vinegar" chips. Try and then you will understand!!!
Oooooo I get ya! Gonna go get some tomorrow now!
Goody gum drop ice cream is way better then the ice cream bar.
Interesting. I still don’t love gum drops so not sure I’d appreciate it as I should 😂
😁
☺️
timtam slam...yum...do it with hot chocolate yummo
What! Too sweet!
Cheese rolls need to be toasted more and topped with butter. They are a real Otago/Southland iconic food
Ya we left those until right before we filmed it, and kinda rushed them, definitely could have been more toasted. I want to make them again.
The asparagus is bomb asf!! It all is haha
I love asparagus! Just not canned and mushy 😂
Try putting the Milo + milk in the microwave on high until it boils, then add a little more cold milk and a spoon of sugar before drinking.
Love how everyone has their own perfect way of making Milo ☺️ we found we liked it once we added a lot more.
I guess the asparagus rolls or to die for lol
Good one 😂
with the milo you have to put tablespoons
😂 Ive tried that now, much better!
Tim tams are Australian
Fairy bread is Australian
Milo is Australian!!
Sorry! Just doing the recommendations. Maybe I should retitle it to Americans Trying Australian Foods in New Zealand 😂
My favourite way of having milo is one teaspoonful then top it up with hot water and however much milk you usually like in a hot drink. It's definitely a bit of an odd flavour, if you're expecting a hot-chocolate type experience!
The other fun way to have milo is in cold milk, but it doesn't really mix in - it's mostly an excuse to eat the milo powder by itself!
100% hot milk for me. :)
We had such a hard time stirring in the Milo in our cold milk! Glad to know we weren't the defective ones 😂 And your way sounds good! We'll have to try it soon. We now have an almost full bag in the pantry to get through..
no water
