I watch this often. From time to time. When I feel like I need to be humbled in the existentialism of my own of existence. I play both piano and guitar. And as a pianist, I came close to playing this moonlight sonata 3rd movement. It was a realistic goal. But as a guitarist, this is a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. one that I will never achieve. Not with endless lessons and practice. not with determined trying and tearful cursing and bleeding my fingers to the bone practicing. What Tina is able to do with such effortless grace and beauty is something ethereal. Something SUPER human. It is a gift, undeniable. And I’m a grateful being for having witnessed it.

If you don't believe you can achieve something... you WON'T. It's mindset. Stop being jealous... and PRACTICE. Just like Tina S. did. Practice gives you talent. It ain't magick. I had to practice my ass off to get my mixed voice back up to par and be able to hit a C#5 vocal again - now I'm aiming for F#5 and A6.

@@PersephoneSkye_ true words....ish. Like....if you are five foot 1 inches, it isn't likely you'll ever make pro basketball league. no matter how hard you practice and try, you'll always be five-1 and that just isn't a handicap you easily get over. It could well be that Tina has a level of dexterity that cannot be trained for. However, unlike the basketball metaphor, this also might not be so clear cut....but...I think...maybe...
The issue is that you have to put time and practice in before you know...so...in that, I think you are right. Our friend Myluong may well have the natural dexterity and talent to do this with enough practice.
I'm guessing, maybe...skip piano (unless you like it more), focus on guitar and try it. I'm sure no one showed Tina how to play Beethoven on a guitar, which is nightmarish to consider. She had to figure out how to do it herself. While she looks like she's doing a hammer pull trill, I do think I see the pick in that technique, which isn't very common. i could be wrong, but Myluong is right. I've never seen finger positioning like that, and I'm not exactly what else she's doing apart from maybe sometimes picking. Maybe it's just a really complex hammer trill, but I don't think so. It looks like she had to adapt her own technique to pull it off.
The point is, Myluong may actually be capable of doing this, but she won't ever know unless she puts in like....maybe...another five to ten years of focusing entirely on the guitar....
Which seems to be the point of her post...not that she's self defeatist, but that she recognizes how much more difficult this is to play on the guitar than the piano.
      Also also...
Not everyone can do what everyone else can. Apart from skill and work, there are physical requirements to playing any instrument, and not everyone is physically optimized for every instrument. This isn't philosophy, it's just a fact. Some people are just put together in all the right ways to play certain instruments. Can practice overcome that? Maybe...to a point...But it'll take MUCH more practice to overcome it.
on the other hand...Def Leppards drummer lost an arm and is one of the best drummers in the world.
I think the issue is, we all only have about 70 to 90 years in life to "get good at stuff", so...yes...likely, with enough practice Myluong may well be able to do this...
...if she doesn't do anything else for a while. And she may well want to do things more important to her than piano or guitar. It is unfair to call out a civilian poster like that, especially when they are clearly just giving due credit.

I must have watched this amazing performance about 30 times and I am still mesmerised. The power and huge guitar tone that Tina casually delivers is incredible. Yes, there are other talented metal players who can play this piece but Tina is a cut above. She started studying classical guitar at a very early age and it shows here. Everything is geared towards 100% efficiency and perfection from the way she is holding the guitar to her « hand and wrist » position, calmly shredding Beethoven …

Imagine the jam sessions in the afterlife. Beethoven invites Gershwin over to his house for their weekly piano/harpsichord dual. Chopin, Mancini, Liszt, and Ellington are in their usual conservatory chairs, ready to act as judges. At the other end of the mansion, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, and Haydn are listening to Bach, Mozart, Armstrong, and Hendrix warm up in the drawing room. Joe leans over to ask Toni when Glenn is going to show up. Handel is in the corner with Ella and Aretha, newly inspired to write an oratorio for the two, and furiously scribbling away. Then the door opens and the whole room shouts "Neil!" as the Professor walks in. Jimi gives him a nod, but Satch says, "You're late," and points to his kit.

Tina impresses me more than any guitarist I've ever heard, and I've been playing for 20 years, I am just so blown away I'm almost at a loss for words. I've watched this video several times trying to find even one thing I could say for constructive criticism and all I can say is to maybe show more emotion and to not make it look so damn easy! This song is a serious finger workout on both hands, and I bet she could have kept playing this song over and over again back to back without breaking a sweat. She is incredibly gifted, I would love to hear some original compositions from her. I hope she never stops playing, talent like this deserves to be heard and appreciated.

One more comment on top of thousands, but as a kid I remember trying to learn to play the original composition on piano, hundreds of hours, and never getting anywhere close to proficient. Listened to a podcast a year or so ago where I think they sampled you and said Beethoven may have been the first heavy-metal composer, and thinking to myself “God that’s why I always loved this piece!”
Just knowing this recording exists is a treasure. This has brought joy to my soul in the middle of some really dark times, just knowing that some human being somewhere took as much joy in hearing Beethoven as I always did, and I believe divined his intent from the ether Similarly, but actually put in the diligence to fully realize it… It’s the essence of magic, it’s electrifying, I have to see if you sell a copy of your audio on iTunes because I want to on this forever.

To the people saying she has no style of her own: she is very early in her musical journey and will develop a style with time. You can't expect her to already have a fully developed style at 17 years old, that's ludicrous. Her technical skills are extraordinary and will surely blossom into a unique and equally as extraordinary style. And she's a better guitarist than 99% of all the people watching the video so we can only imagine where she will be in 15 or 20 years.

Nicholas McCallon everyone has their own style at any point when they start to play guitar. No one has ever seen her just play something that SHE has written. Maybe she hasn't written anything but if she did, that would be an execution of her own "style" wouldn't it?

    • @clairvoyanttentacle222
      @clairvoyanttentacle222 8 років тому +2

xPBKM4x what I meant when I made that comment was when someone who has been playing guitar(well) for many years plays a song, they change it to suit their style. When Hendrix is playing, most people who've listened to him know who's playing because of his distinctive style. When you hear SRV, you know it's SRV. When you hear insane slap picking, Flea comes to mind. What I'm saying is her method (style) of playing is a precise, classical technique, which makes sense because she started on classical guitar from a young age. Yes she has a style ,of course, but her style isn't a unique style that's hers and hers only.

also full credit to WHAT songs she's listening to/learning ... _not many_ 17yo's will devote the time required to learning a complex classic like Beethoven, seriously she's on another level man and anyone who criticizes her is oozing jealousy, and perhaps confronted because a 17yo girl is making their own guitarwork look ordinary. • @blankname4716

What's most impressive is that you can tell she gets the music internally just from seeing how she reacts to each phrase. Lots of pianists miss out on that. They're either stiff from trying to impress or rigidly conforming to score scribbles. Interesting style will surely develop after experiencing and experiments with many others.
As for another level...this is essentially a passionate arpeggio exercise. Check out a complex Bach fugue on guitar. Probably the hardest thing to do with the same energy as this video. Almost no one can touch that stuff (from what I've seen on yt so far).

Anyways, a problem that many of these super dedicated (Chinese) musicians have is that they focus too much at speed, but still suck at basic techniques like bends and vibrato's. These techniques shouldn't be underestimated as they really are the core of a great sound and what people consider to be emotion in one's play. These skills are actually extremely hard to master and once you do you have the ability to indistinguishably sound like other great musicians and have the ability to develop your own unique sound that other people like, which also again requires creativity.

I found this by accident. As a guitarist who used to be very good, I can say she’s lightyears ahead of me at my absolute best. I probably also speak for every other honest guitarist who has commented. I searched to see where she was now and she’s vanished. It could be that the negativity here and elsewhere got to her -often with super high achievers, just one negative comment wipes out 1,000 positive ones. My advice if so: - take the majority verdict which is the comments here - as the rest of the comments aren’t authentic - there are always going to be washed up talentless failed old guitarists and their jealous girlfriends, and none of them can play this. If not and you just wanted a change, enjoy life, come back when you want to and maybe show people like Nita Strauss that kind of speed when you get a spare second. I’m always dismayed about humanity when the vultures descent on such rare talent - I thought this was quite brilliant!

It's too bad this sonata is called "Moonlight". The term originally was in reference to the dreamy first movement and was applied only after Beethoven's death. (He never used the term.) I think it throws off some commenters, especially in regard to tempo. Beethoven called the sonata "almost a fantasy". The third movement here *is* one of Beethoven's virtuosic pieces (and "presto agitato" in tempo, not meant to be played slowly...or even medium tempo but very fast and agitated/excited). Remarkable meshing of Beethoven's power with the extraordinary metal artistry and skill of Tina S. Personally, I can play Tina's videos over and over and discover new things (often quite subtle) every time . A wonderful guitarist. Those who say, "It's because she is a pretty girl" or "It's just noise" are *so* incredibly far off...

it's a sad fact that a great many men in the world think exactly like Dick Masterson.
when you think about it, women (as a group) have inherently greater digital dexterity than men and thus should - over all - be even better guitarists.
i think the only reason more are not (and there ARE more today than ever before - just look around youtube) is because chauvanistic societies discourage girls from pursuing dreams of such virtuosity.

Those who speak about a lack of musician spirit know nothing about music and are searching for a reason to criticize a amazing guitar player, and that is the argument they have just because she does not express her feelings with her face and body... Anyway I preffer a focused player that playes like her with 17 than a showman that plays nothing good in a lifetime!
