What Happened to the Six Million Dollar Man (1973-78)?

- The 70s were a time when television would seem to try anything at least once. Science Fiction was one of the main genres where this was very true. Thanks to the success of series like Star Trek, and Lost in Space there was a deluge of, off beat and actually good genre TV. Typically it was with some sort of toy tie-in or angle to get children to watch and/or buy something. And just wait until Star Wars happened.
But, the early 70s would find a new kind of hero to grab the hearts and minds of kids across the country and he’d bring with him some of the coolest toys around. Because, he was literally made up of metal and plastic himself.
The Six Million Dollar Man would jump into television history with a premise that was brilliant, cutting edge, and perfect TV fodder. It would also make a heartthrob and icon out of a guy named Lee Majors. Who would eventually play the father to our lord and savior Ash Williams…but that’s another show.
On this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten, we have the technology and capability to make the first episode all about The Six Million Dollar Man. This will be that episode!
This episode of Gone But Not Forgotten is written baby Jessica Dwyer, edited by Cesar Gabriel, narrated by Travis Hopson and produced by Dave Arroyo.

I absolutely Loved this show when I was a kid. I had the pleasure of meeting Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner at a convention in New York City about 10 years ago.
Same! (Not to mtg the actors though). I vividly remember the Bigfoot episode to this day with the spinning tunnel and everything. The show was so bold and fun.
What was it like to meet and talk to them?
Omg you actually got to meet them both? Wow what was that like? Ten years ago they would have been pretty old back then even?
I tried to talk too Mr. Major's but all he did was nod his head while he signed an autograph for me. But Lindsay Wagner was all smiles she was talking with people. She gave me a card with her son's clothing line information on it. Apparently her son has a clothing line for big and tall men.
oh wow !! I can't imagine how amazing that must have been !!
It’s a show that holds up. The opening sequence is epic.
One of the all time great TV opening title sequences; the music, the mix of stock footage with staged shots, the narration, the retro "computer" sound fx, and the layering of imagery is all brilliantly done!
@@petergivenbless900 Definitely. And Steve sprinting at 60+mph along the race track. He really did that - didn't he dad!?
@@lolly_breadhell yeh he did lol 😆
@lollybread...haHa!..love your commentary , just love your commentary. And yar darn right he ran that fast, if not , faster!
But , I still love this show. Just too many memories. .....love it.
This TV show along with The Incredible Hulk (77-82) and The Amazing Spider-Man (77‑79) were what I’d run home for as a kid
Sometimes, when I am walking down a country road toting a backpack, I hear the Hulk Lonely Man theme, pondering where I will find my next job, wondering how far behind me is Jack McGee and where I can pick up some replacement tube socks....🙂

Anyone remember the show "Lucan"?
Our Barbies dated The Six Milliom Dollar man. That eyeball on the toy was very very cool.
As a crippled kid growing up in the 70's I loved this show. Had the doll and the suit. I still remember being wheeled into surgery thinking I could come out bionic.
Great story.
As a kid growing up who use to get chased and bullied a lot I always thought that I was Lee Majors running slowly down the alley to eventually getting caught each time being beaten. The final severe beating that put me in a full body cast I thought for sure after waking up from my coma that the doctors given me the $6 million dollar man treatment. Boy was I wrong....
Did you? Come out bionic i mean!😊??
@@disguiseddv8ant486 I'm very sorry you were hurt so badly and bullied & beaten up! When I was a young fella in 1976 I too was bullied I was 10 years old and loved Happy days my Mom bought me a fake leather coat like Fonzie wore in the tv show. Well the other boys thought I was trying to be a tough guy and they beat me up too. So I understand. God bless you now sir
My most loved series growing up was The Six Million Dollar Man. I also loved Bionic Woman so nice to see these every week. Lindsay W. won an Emmy in her role on her show in 1977. You are right Lee Majors acting and endearment in his role makes is hard to duplicate. It is perfect as it is, so ideal to just watch the reruns over again. I bought the DVD set.
Yey. As a kid I (and maybe you) would wait expectantly for those few moments in T6MDM when Steve would dazzle us with those sound-effect enhanced abilities!!!
That echoey shudder as he ripped open a door, the cranking of a pesky pipe, or the whistling sounds of a metal pole flying to its target. Such fun. :D
So your old to eh?
Yeah, I had to grab the set as well. I even went so far as to buy a Steve Austin figure like I used to own back in the day.
@@roberthaynes8830 my buddy had the Steve Austin dude.Unfortunately we blew him up with fire crackers then what was left we shot the living shit out of with the .22s.Its was probably worth some money now but man it was fun killing Steve Austin. Lol
CurrentLY on reruns in the UK
Loved this show as a kid growing up in the 70s. It was the closest thing we had to a superhero show. Admittedly, it lasted about a season or two too long and didn't end gracefully. Bionic Woman lasted a little while after that, but it got tired as well.
What about greatest amerikan hero?
@@ericvulgate That came later. I'm talking pre-Superman movie.
I used to laugh at how silly the Incredible Hulk was but than I remembered how I loved this show and I shut up.
Both did get an appearance in the duck dodgers cartoon in 2003 also Bigfoot was there. And Steve appeared in the venture bros cartoon.
Back when you could make a gender swap without half the country on Social Security clutching their chests, "woke! woke!"
As a kid, I would move slowly and chant, "Na na na na" like Steve Austin.
We all did back then lol
Every school play ground in the UK at the time
Thanks for doing this particular episode! This show still means alot to me as a 58 year old! Very much appreciated!!🙂👍
Yeh this video is timely for me too as I'm only 5 episodes into rewatching The Bionic Woman whilst tread-milling!!
If I get through the other 53 episodes I will be a teency bit lighter and will have laughed a tonne coz some of this acting is... wellll..... :D
@@lolly_bread Yeah, some of the acting is hilarious! I've been watching Six Million Dollar Man episodes lately, and those 3 movies that were made later on. Bionic Woman is next!🙂👍
Yep. Also 58. My favorite TV show. I even got the action figure with the hole in its head for seeing through Steve’s bionic eye!
I wish I still had that.
@@vandalorianvandalorian4769 Me too! And the little engine so he could pick it up!🙂 I miss the 70s at times. 👍
In case anyone is curious, $6 million in 1973 would be about $40,740,000 in 2023.
Why hasn't this show been remade? There is so much technology that is getting closer to what was depicted in the show it would have a much better connection with reality.
After many cost overruns it would be the 450 billion dollar man.
It could double in 6 months
@@janneman27Haha. You need to cross picket lines and start writing Hollywood scripts immediately, based just on this joke alone. Love it.
But this time Steve should be a black transgender woman from Venezuela.
Looking forward to the "What Happened to" entry for the Bionic Woman. Loved the Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman cross over episodes.
6:49 That isn't the writer Mark Frost, it's the singer, Peter Gabriel. The writer you named as Peter Allen Fields is actually Mark Frost. How did you not spot that in editing?
When I sat down to watch this show I became the Bionic Man, loved it all. Lee was perfect for both this and the Fall Guy
About five years ago, a friend got into an accident, and when he woke from the coma after a few weeks, was missing his right arm at the shoulder. He got outfitted for a bionic arm that was integrated to his nervous system over the course of several surgeries and continuous physical therapy for more than two years. The PT was largely to get him accustomed to "commanding" his new arm to do things like pick up a glass and drink from it. The whole process took an incredible toll on his body, and he died of sepsis about three years after the accident. Still, his wife, family and friends had him around for just that much longer. Godspeed, Nate!
It would be different if he got the 6 million dollars hardware and government intelligence agency back up.
.... don't kill me, I'll show myself out ....
Lee Majors just is Steve Austin and this show is still to this day one of my all time favourites. And of course Lindsay Wagner...OMG...such class! The reboot of the Bionic Woman showed that Lindsay just is the one and only. And the Toys....Wow! I still have such fond memories of all that Kenner goodness! This was a great video and took me back to such happy childhood memories.
As a family in the 70's we would watch this every week without fail. It was great TV.
I'm currently rewatching it on Legend TV channel here in England. Every morning at 9am. 👍
Lee Majors was awesome in the TV show Tour of Duty's last season. He played an old soldier named Pop Scarlet who had been in the army since ww2, but a bad attitude with authority kept getting him busted to Private by the time we meet him in Vietnam. He even had his 'own' episode where he reconnects with his son, only to have him be killed in combat.
I'd love to see a WTF Happened to for that show!
I remember that. He did a good job as the "been everywhere, seen everything, didn't like any of it" old soldier.
This was one of my favorites to watch growing up in the 1970s. Andre the Giant back then was what wrestlers have done today. He as far as I know began the trend from wrestler to tv shows. I had Oscar and the maskatron and Steve action figures. Thanks for doing this. I was taken back to my childhood seeing this.
The Six Million Dollar Man was essential watching back in the day, for guys of a certain age. Very cool intro and theme music, excellent job of casting for the major roles, and a rather innovative idea for a sci-fi Tv series.
The Bionic Woman and the Incredible Hulk!
I didn’t know that Mark Frost was in fact Peter Gabriel…😂
I'm glad someone else noticed.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that haha
THANK YOU, I thought I was going crazy! 😆
5:47 I had no idea that was _Harve Bennett_ at the start of the intro. His voice is perfect!
When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, I had some *Six-Million Dollar Man* stickers. I put them on my school work once and even wrote me name as _"Steve Austin."_ Naturally the teacher had no way of knowing who it belonged to, so she basically had to call me out in the middle of class.
I had the huge action figure, the rocket and such, but it was bittersweet. They were really cool, but were too big to incorporate any offer large action figure. Even classic *G.I. Joe* was too small.
Thanks for a great nostalgia trip!
Loved this show. Got to meet Lee Majors a few years ago. He's a really nice guy.
I say a daily prayer that marky mark, nor the funky bunch, are allowed to dishonor this timeless classic.
I'm glad you mentioned "The Big Valley" as a lot of people who do retrospectives on old TV shows ignore anything an actor did before it. Thanks for another interesting video.
I liked Barbara Stanwyick and Linda Evans' Big Valleys.
Big Valley is a classic show.

Bonanza and The Virginian weren’t too bad either. Sorely missing shows like that these days…
@@chrisdragnet722 Featuring two classic beauties.
I loved this show as a kid. Many fond memories! I had the Six Million Dollar Man action figure and Maskatron.
YES! Im at work now but im SAVING this til I get home with fresh made popcorn! I LOVED this show and actor!
Just saw him this weekend at Dragoncon.
Wow. What a fantastical retrospect overview. This show and lead Lee Majors is forever iconic 👍😎👍
I always loved the intro to that show. It still looks as good now as it did back then.
Just the sound of those bionic sound effects are enough to bring back memories of that iconic series.. So happy that the last of the 3 follow -up TV movies ended on a happy note. Steve and Jamie were made (or should that be remade? Lol) to be together.
I met Lee Majors on my 45th birthday - 8 years ago ! I was at Comicon in Birmingham (UK) and only went to catch a glimpse of Mr Majors. Comicon is more of my partner's thing as she loves all that stuff. She knew Lee Majors would be there, it was also my birthday AND she could go to Comicon under the guise of a "birthday treat". Very sneaky.
Mr Majors gave a talk about how he was told not to attend as there had been terrorist threats in the UK around that time, but he said that if he stayed at home, it just means the terrorists would win.I waited all day for my opportunity to meet him and right at the death, I joined the queue to have him sign a picture for me.He was very ill at the time and had to keep taking a break. However, as his last signing that day, and despite needing a rest, he saw me. What a fantastic guy ! He offered me his hand to shake and he signed the pic "To Ian, Happy 45th birthday. Lee Majors". I told him that Comicon really isn't my thing and that I only attended to see him. Mr Majors replied with a wry smile, "I'll tell you a secret - this really isn't MY kind of thing either !" I'm glad his health has improved. I'd like to meet him again some day.
The Six Million Dollar Man had unquestionably the greatest opening of ANY TV show in history. But as a kid, the stories somehow didn't speak to me. However, as a young teenager, The Fall Guy did and I never missed an episode.
Lee Majors. Absolute LEGEND.
This was the best show on television. There was Batman, star trek and this ❤❤❤❤❤ the only fan club i ever optioned to get into .
Cool episode but I have one HUGE issue. When you list some of the famous writers, when you show Mr. Frost, it is actually a picture of Peter Gabriel, the singer of solo and Genesis fame. Other than that, this was a great trip down my childhood memory lane.
Also, Goldman and Austin worked for the OSI. Note the "I". It's only referred to as "OSO" in the novels. You're covering the television show here, so please check your facts! Otherwise, very nice job on this mini-doc!
I see I'm not the only one who noticed. Yeah, Peter Gabriel kind of jumped right off the screen at me.
I loved this tv series when i was young and i still love it! All actors where great, the music and sound effects, it was just awesome!
Kind of cheesy now when one looks back.
Been waiting for some kind of remake for decades. The show has a special place in my heart as I once broke my arm playing Steve Austin when I was a kid.
The opening to this show was PHENOMENALLY crafted. And you can even see that it isn't as if they needed a huge budget to shoot everything, compile stock footage, and edit it all together. The sound, music, V.O., and all of that really made it hit hard! Loved it.
ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum ba bum bum
I wasn't as heavy into this show but the moments I did enjoy the most was when he went up against the death probe.
Yeah, the probe should have been mentioned here. I don't remember finding Bigfoot scary, but for some reason that probe was.
Thanks for the happy memory of a show I loved as a kid.
I grew up as a kid in the 70s, loved these shows, cartoons, best time of my life..❤
I wish that I could relive the 70's, all over again.
All Time Favorite. Childhood Well Spent.
@gunmetalguyusa, that and a bowl of cereal and sitting down in front of the T.V. right after playing tag.
@@TarkentonLarry-iu3qp Yes Indeed. Unlike Mikey I ate ALMOST everything 😆
I remember this airing in the UK. The episodes I remember most are the ones where Steve Austin has to take on the Death Probe and Sasquatch.
Surprised a movie has not been made since.
Glad there’s been no reboot of this show. These 70s shows had an air of optimism and innocence about them that today would be ruined. Great memories.
The one and only TV show that compelled me to come inside from playing outdoors just to watch it.
Pray up.
I loved this show as a kid and the Bionic Woman
loved this show as a kid, and wanted to be Jamie and have super powered adventures alongside Steve.
Every little boys dream
I'm 56 and had all the toys as a kid in the UK, I could go on about all the cool things the 6mil man doll had but those in the know, know, loved it. Happy childhood days
Been watching on Peacock and so glad they picked it up. Great recaps and commentary!
Awesome review covering this series from beginning to end. They did an amazing job with the special effects they had at the time. I would love to see a big screen version of the show with today’s special effects.
It really was fun watching and believing these shows as a kid.
I do also think that any modern interpretations of the Bionic Duo done with CGI, over-the-top stunts, etc. would lose a lot of the real magic they had; and I think that just demonstrates how our imaginations played a key supporting role in the fondness of these shows, just as they were. :)
The show was a hit that spawned a spinoff series, "The Bionic Woman". It also allowed Lee Majors to futher his career where he would later star in "The Fall Guy" for another 5 seasons.
I know
It was really very well made for the time. There was a huge disparity between TV and film in the Seventirs. Major film stars like Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds, Jane Fonda, Sophia Loren etc, etc would have nothing to do with television.
TV meant your career was over if you were a feature film actor. Conversely, if you were a TV actor and werecwell known, film producers would pass you over and chose an unknown to star in their respective feature film.
Cindy Williams
Cindy Williams from Laverne & Shelley fame was passed over for the Star Wars film as George Lucas thought she was too well known as a TV actress for anyone to take her seriously as Princess Leia. I saw Cindy Williams on an expose about sexism in Hollywood in the Seventies. She alleged that she was 'unofficially ' told she had the part in Star Wars.
Ms. Williams was dying to get into film as it paid significantly more than television work. Women in TV were paid way less than their male counterparts. Cindy Williams was stunned she didn't get the Star Wars role, and she was outright shocked when she heard Carrie Fischer got the part who literally had nothing on her acting resume and was 18 years old.
But I digress
I have friends who are script writers who claim the storyline, for the most time ( yes, there are some cringe worthy scripts and dialogue later on) and the movie type feel make The Six Million Dollar Man a timeless classic.
I even heard The Sopranos creator David Chase cite the X Files and The Six Million Dollar Man as major influences on his ability to turn each of The Sopranos episodes into movie quality.
@@FrostedSeagull Carrie Fisher was the best friend of Cindy's co-star, Penny Marshall.
Every kid would run in slow motion after watching the show!!!! EVERY kids wanted bionics arm, legs and eye! I’m convinced The Rock’s trade mark left eyebrow thing was derived from watching The Six Million Dollar Man!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 All time favorite show!!!!
"Jean Claude Van Damme's Cinematic Masterpiece" - Nice nod, I like it 😊🎉😎👍🏻😁
I literaly can not believe that I watched the pilot movie only last night!! I wondered why I some of the main characters were not how I remember them or why the opening credits were not the same, now I know. I don't think it should be revived, it was of its time and great back then ,but trying to bring back classic shows from the seventies and eighties never quite pans out, reboots of NightRider, Charlies Angels, and Baywatch etc have proven this. Oh you forgot to mention the Bionic dog which was pretty cool too.
One of the best TV shows ever❤
In the late 70-80s decades love this show 6 millions dollars man and the bionic woman Tv series.
Nice work, Jessica, Travis and team!
I was too young to remember the show, however the action of the intro and the music during the outro always moved me as a kid. Incidentally , I had no idea how deep the series went, creatively. So, thanks for filling in the gap!
I’m a 70s kid and started rewatching this on Peacock recently. I agree the HD transfer looks fantastic. I haven’t gotten through the initial 3 made-for-TV movies but they pacing feels glacial now, even for these types of shows. I’ll try to keep pushing as I’d like to get to bigfoot, which definitely scared me as a kid. I’ve a memory of his face coming off showing the circuitry beneath; really freaked me out.
I tried to rewatch it too. You know, nostalgia. I couldn't do it! Couldn't get past the 3 "movies". Was bored out of my mind and really got hung up on how cheesy it all looked. Bad set production, lame dialog, and bad acting.
Actually fell asleep a couple times. The memory of the show is way better than the actual show :(
Amazing video as usual. Great details and backstories. Wonder Woman next please !!!
Never missed an episode. Perfectly said, don't attempt to duplicate, it won't work.
I love watching the Six million dollar man and a lot of the other TV shows in the 70's and 80's
There's a Christmas episode with Ray Walston as a Scrooge-like figure. Steve pays a visit to the toy store. If f you look in the background during his purchase, you'll see his own action figure on the shelf behind the sales clerk. 🤣 I used to have them all: several Steve's, the Maskatron, the "3 Arm Set"; one of the arms had a working crystal radio, another had an oxygen bottle for underwater, and the third one ??? I forgot what it did! I recall that it had a small module that fit inside a compartment, but that's about all it did.
crystal radio was a backpack
Not sure if anyone noticed, that picture of Mark Frost is actually musician Peter Gabriel. 😮
This was awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make this. I grew up watching both The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. Great shows and fond memories.
Thanks for bringing back these memories!
@6:50 Mark Frost looks uncanningly like Peter Gabriel, if you ask me 😁
- I also recall Lee Majors cameo in Scrooged (Bill Murray) from 1988, where he is in the Xmas-Horror TV-trailer add "The Night the Reindeer Died" as the Six-Million-Dollar Man helping out Santa with some nasties, simply hilarious! 😆
I loved this show as a kid but had no idea it had 3 tv movies that preceded it!
The Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, Evel Knievel, G.I. Joe, Stretch Armstrong, Superman, Star Wars, Big Wheels, Green Machines, 10 speeds, the first video games, we had an awesome childhood!
This is an excellent video. It's well researched and presented!!
To amuse and distract myself on the treadmill lately I watch a bunch of the old TV shows I enjoyed as a kid, including The Six Million Dollar Man, Lost in Space, Get Smart and presently I'm wading through The Bionic Woman.
Some of the acting and concepts in these shows are so corny they literally have me bursting with laughter, but they're also a nostalgic trip and a reminder of simpler times.
What's wild, this and the Bionic Woman was on TV for years. When David Eick tried to remake the Bionic Woman in 2007, it lasted 8 episodes.
I vaguely remember that. Which must mean it was bad, because I normally remember anything sci-fi in great detail.
@@stevenscott2136 It was on NBC and then went to DVD and then it's poof done.

An all time favorite of mine, I remember getting Steve, the Bionic Repair Transport, and the Crystal Radio Backpack for Christmas.
All my third grade classmates watched the TV show during its original run. It’s all we talked about for a long while.
I wish I still had all of my toys from this series. I still have the cards that make a small mini poster on the back once all are collected. Anybody remember the rocket/lab for Steve? I thought that was the coolest thing ever.

I loved this show when I was a kid they even had a robotic big foot on it I liked comic books he was like a super heroe without a costume bionic woman was good too there was a comic book series too
I literally grew up with this show, it's launch coming very shortly before my birth. By the time I was in Kindergarten I was role-playing as Steve Austin on the playground. ;-) The episodes with Bigfoot stand out in my memory yet I am ashamed I didn't retroactively recognize Andre the Giant until it was just shown now. I know he was only in the first ep as Bigfoot but still....excellent topic to chose, and a very well done lookback at a time of SF gold. (I was especially happy to see the UFO clip while showing all the great SF of the 1970s. Criminally under-rated show.)
Great show! I watched every week as a kid!
I hope Travis Knight gets to direct the adaptation
@zombiesnyder13, who is Travis Knight? Can you tell me?
Ya know... Hugh Jackman would've made a great 6 Million Dollar Man reboot...
As a 70's kid my Christmas toys of him, the rocket ship AND Maskatron were the best.
06:53 That picture of Mark Frost looks alot like a recent picture of singer Peter Gabriel.
‘Death Probe’
That sound still makes me shiver too this day.
I have to say this kid has got it pretty spot on! I grew up in the 70's I was 10 in 1976 and the 6 Million Dollar Man was started in 1974 so I was the perfect age for this production! I loved it I would watch re runs and couldn't wait for the next new episode! Such great television back then for kids and families!

It ended.
Quite a bit ago 😛
Hopefully they don't revamp it as some WOKE, non-binary empowered (wo)man
The 6 million complaints "man."
Let my childhood in peace plz Hollyweird 🙏🏻
You could never remake the 6 Million Dollar man again.
Lee Majors WAS that character.
If they remade it today it would probably be woke and have Steve get transgender surgery after the near fatal accident. Then the rest of the pilot episode would be about him coming to terms with his new gender and wearing a dress. They'd make Rudy Wells Asian and Oscar Goldman would be changed to a woman character - Ossia Goldwoman. 🤣
Thank you, loved this show as a kid and I learned several things about the series.
Thumbs up added. Really well done!
I remember in kindergarten (1975-ish), all of my friends standing in the hall and swearing that when we were old enough, we were changing our names to Steve Austin. I met Richard Anderson (Oscar Goldman) in '82. I was still a kid, but it was such a great experience.
Lee Majors was already an Icon from his role of Heath Barkley
Elvis Presley was a fan of Lee Majors.
You brought back some childhood memories on this one!!! (I'm downloading all episodes now... I had a giant crush on Lindsey Wagner.. Thanks for the video!
I remember the trailer announcing the series on ABC when I was a kid. It was one of the happiest days of my life.
I met Allen Oppenheimer at Pensacon, such a nice and lovely gentleman. Mr Oppenheimer was also the voice of Skeletor, other characters in MOTU, and several voices on The Neverending Story.

I was 5 days old when the TV movie came out! Loved watching it when I was a little older. I received the Steve Austin action figure Xmas of '77 or '78.
Good video. You brought up the fact that this show was never replicated or re-made. But I remember a show called Now and Again with a business guy whose brain gets put in an engineered superhuman body after he was basically killed in a train accident. Some things are slightly different but the basic premise is still the same.
