When Alex asked why the Forest was white, I was a little upset that nobody followed up with, "Alex! You can't just ask something why it's white" from Mean Girls.
I have loved the "put the relevant card on the screen" feature for a long time, but I enjoy the wide shots you've been using recently, where half the frame is the card and half the frame is the person explaining/discussing it (like 4:33). I sometimes wish that, for more complicated board states/interactions, you'd display multiple cards on screen at once. I know y'all do it occasionally for e.g. Pako attacks, but I'd love to see more of it!
I don't think Aaron realised that Cleopatra triggers off any legendary creature with counters dying (including Bristly Bill), not just his own. Card is crazy strong 🙃
Yep you can also put counters on other peoples legendary creators with her if you intend to kill them or for politics. One thing to note is if any legendary creature with counters on it dies you have to draw cards and have to lose the 2. There is no may in it so it can kill you either to decking or life loss if your not careful at some points
Hey Jan, about the lack of trample dilemma, I play Veyran in many different capacities, and if you're going for a commander damage build, take a page out of the Shu Yun playbook. Evasive cantrips like Shadow Rift and Slip Through Space are a must. Along with Distortion Strike, it sets up a free unblockable bash to the face, following a big attack the turn prior. I also noticed there wasn't a Storm-Kiln Artist. It goes infinite with Haze of Rage. If you can't win through combat damage because of a board stall, it's possible to Haze of Rage enough resources with Storm-Kiln to burn the table out with something like Crackle with Power. It was nice showing, but I wish there would have been a few unblockable inclusions.
Love Zimone and Dina! The deck can get pretty crazy once you start adding untap effects and bounce lands to guarentee landfall triggers. Favorite commander ever but it can definetly feel a bit like solitaire if you build it like that. Amulet of vigor is definetly a must add I would say!
I love it too! I had it built when I first started playing commander and it was so complicated that I took it apart. I’ve rebuilt it recently and although the lines are still complex, I am absolutely loving it!
I've tried almost all types of builds with Veyran. Since it doesn't have evasion or protection and since her pump wears off, she needs a lot to "storm off" for her combat build (card draw, a way to go mana neutral, spell to give her evasion, and a counterspell in hand to stop removal) just to attack/kill 1 person. It's faster, but more fragile than her "spellharmonicon" build, since even if Veyran fizzles on the trigger doubler build's storm turn, you still generated value (life gain/counters on Aetherflux/Aria of flame, damage from pingers, card draw from Emeritus/Ransacked Lab, flip Urabrask, treasures from Storm-kiln, or drakes from Talrand)
It's challenging in casual boardstates, but it isn't a competitive wincon. Dealing non-infinite combat damage is just way too slow when your opponents have 120 life and you have to get past blockers and removal, besides the fact if you kill one and pass, the other two can still win. It's much better to just win all at once and ignore combat or get through with a dualcaster combo so the boardstate doesn't matter. Edit to add: Duel commander, Conquest, or classic 1v1 formats like modern, standard, pioneer, or pauper are great places to stretch your competitive legs and still have to pay attention to combat because the life totals really matter.
Wasnt the scuteswarm trigger misplayed since you had 1, played a land, creating 2(Parallel lives), then having 3, playing a land, thus creating 6 more putting you to 9 scutes?
you are better off holding zimone and dina up as threat of activation to know where to point the life loss and in case you draw on your turn at all, that way you get more life triggers. love that card
Why don't the scute swarm tokens that Aaron has double with landfall? It seems he was just getting one extra scute swarm every time he played a land rather than doubling the amount he already had?
If you're talking about me, Zimone and Dina's entire ability needs to resolve before anything triggered by it will resolve. This includes the text "repeat this process." As a result, while I do have two landfall instances, the first does not 'go off' prior to the second being added to the stack. This means i have 1 scute trigger twice, rather than your implied 1 scute trigger and then 3 scute triggers. TL;DR in the turn at 25 minutes only one Scute saw any lands enter.
i think the scutewarm triggers were wrong. if 2 lands enter (without parallel lifes) it makes 1 SW for the first land and then an additional 2 SW for the 2. Land
I built the deck to operate at a level I thought would be fun to play and play against. Just because something is good doesn't mean I want to jam it in a casual deck.
@@alexmcgregor8658 I only started playing MTG two months ago. Zimone & Dina is my only deck. I had help with deck building, and my version includes several untaps (not Intruder Alarm and Retreat to Coralhelm because they are too strong for my playgroup). I feel that the strength of the deck is strongly tied to the number of commander activations. How would you rate the strength of your version compared to, for example, an average precon? Depending on your answer, I might swap some of my untaps for some of your cards to better match the other decks in my playgroup. That way, I would have a weak, a medium, and a strong version of the deck.
@Fleckzeck I'd say that my version of the deck is a little more powerful than modern precons. I expect to be able to present a threatening boardstate by turn 5, and can usually expect to be competitive for a win by 8 on most outings. I agree that more activations scales the deck. Depending on the other tech you're running, you may find that leaning more into instant speed card draw is beneficial, without pushing the overall deck strength too much.
8:37 @Jan why didn't you respond to the Zimone&Dina ability going on the stack, instead of waiting for the Scute Swarm to trigger, leaving Alex with a copy?
Bill's response of, "Yaaay, I agree!" to the, "Horray tentacles!" line from Alex explains why he is playing Japanese Tribal. In the Wizarding World of Harry Potter we would call that a REVEALIO spell miscast on oneself, my dude.
Scute multiplies itselfs not just add one. 1 scute landfall is 2 scute Second landfall is 4 scute, not 3 And with Parallel lives is even more crazy 1 scute - landfall creates 2 additional, total 3 Second landfall creates 3 more, but with Paralell, 6 more. So he should have 9 total, not 5.
The 2 lands from Zimone and Dina are both put onto the battlefield with the resolution of a single ability. The next time landfall triggers are checked, whatever Scutes are in play see 2 triggers. The Scutes from the first trigger don't get duplicated because they don't exist yet at the point when the second land is put into play
Not from Zimone and Dina, because both lands came from that same trigger, the stack couldn't clear into the first landfall before the second landfall was already there, so the only "triggered" scute swarms were the ones already there prior to the Zimone and Dina tap.

True, didn't realise this was a new thing, Thanks for pointing it out.

I certainly did not 🥲
That's bizarre in current magic design (purely on the basis it can be easily misread)

The look Alex gave Bill about that tentacles comment 🤣

The title implies there's Bad dirty Commander with bad Canadian adults
I think those are the games with Wheeler😂😂
Love the new chill opener, but i really miss SOLID AS A ROCK 😎💀🤟
The collective pain as the table realized they all have to keep track of Day/Night now is too accurate lmao
I love the old tattoo style nautical shirt Alex

Ok Alex. In the navy for 22 years. Love the shirt. Where can I get it.
3:07 @Aaron Cleopatra doesn't only put counters on your things. She can put the counters on other players things too, and draws cards off them too
So Aaron must’ve misread Kodama. It’s a search your library for a basic not playing one from hand.
I swear to Bob that if they don't reprint Nadir Kraken as Ultros for the FF UB collab I will die.
Chain of Smog and Winterbloom Apprentice is one of my favorite combos in Zimone and Dina
I'm excited Alex!
SCUTE SCUTE!!!
people say "combat is casual". imo combat ist one of the most challenging aspects of Commander
It's challenging in casual boardstates, but it isn't a competitive wincon. I want that pirate shirt more than anything. More kraken more power
Holy cow 53 seconds ago I'm early! Anyway love you guys and can't wait to watch this ❤
After all the OTJ and MH3 it's nice to see some good older decks...and one future one 😅
Wasnt the scuteswarm trigger misplayed since you had 1, played a land, creating 2(Parallel lives), then having 3, playing a land, thus creating 6 more putting you to 9 scutes?
Zimone and Dina's ability has to resolve fully before any other triggers resolve. So no.
@@alexmcgregor8658 oh okay thanks for the response :)
9:22 What set is the Island Jan has here from? Assuming it’s not an alter or the like.
Dominaria United

Anybody here remembers Fungal Bloom?

Wait didn’t Bill miss that Bristly Bill doubles counters on all creatures at the end there?
He didn't miss so much as think it wasn't worth tracking.
He said he'd only track on the Hydra because none of it would matter once Overwhelming Stampede gave everything +20/+20 anyway
Man I love overwhelming stampede
I loved this video which is why Im commenting for engagement
Why does the Zimone and Dina List not utilize untapp cards? One Z&D trigger per his turn is not very strong.
