- Arjuna Ranatunga seemed totally in control from the minute he walked in at the dismissal of Asanka Gurusinha who was edgy but effective. Arjuna swiftly glided the ball at will and collected plenty of runs on his way to 47. Ranatunga famously played the same stroke to grab a boundary to surpass the Aussie target. Ranatunga went at Shane Warne even before the game began and he was visibly affected since the ball number one.

Ranathunga's batting style very much go go with MS Dhoni's batting style. Both are street smart cricketers, not stylish but mighty effective batsmen. Both were great leaders and done miracles to their respective countries from cricket 🏆🏆

People underestimated his talent. When he was at crease runs always flowed no matter who was bowling. This is called class and talent without the style, he had everything.
He was one of the best at batting with the lower order, rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

I have seen Ranatunga when he visited Pakistan as U19. I think he was the captain of U19.

Ranatunga is the only one I have ever seen who mentally destroyed an Aussie team before even a ball was bowled. His ability to get under the skin of Warne and Steve Waugh is near unprecedented
I’m not sure whether you have seen this video. Ranatunga spoke in Goa I think. He said two of his Indian journalists friends told him after they beat India that if they have to beat Aus, they have to beat them mentally. They have to weaken shame Warne and Waugh brothers I think (don’t exactly remember). They suggested they will come to Lahore and be in the press conference and ask about Warne and Waugh. Ranatunga is supposed to say they are overrated. In the press conference, captain has to choose the press people to ask question. First and second question ranatunga gave chance to these journalists and they asked about Warne and Waugh to which ranatunga promptly replied they are overrated and they don’t do well in these conditions. That’s how SL won the mental battle against Australia.
@@sln7839 It's often the case that the biggest bullies are often the most mentally fragile. If you ever watch an Aussie team when they accept they are getting hammered, they drop shoulders, their body language is defeatist and its clear they can't believe what is happening.
Tariq Mohamed Sledging as a strategy really worked for Aussies until say 2010. It’ll definitely demoralize the opposition batsmen. It works in office as well.
Anupa Daranagama we are happy that Srilanka won the World Cup. Now, 3 Asian countries have won the World Cup. This is one of my favorite final ever. Tactically, arjuna was brilliant. I like the 92 World Cup which was master minded by Imran and the 83 World Cup which was masterminded by Kapil. All these 3 had something special.
Anupa Daranagama yes winning a World Cup is always a big deal as only one team can win. In 2011, we were favorites and challenge was expectations were huge and it’s happening in front of home ground where reaction is instantaneous. Gambhir’s and Dhoni’s knock in the final were great knocks. When gambhir came in, the pressure was enormous. When dhoni entered, nerves had slightly calm down as India was 100 plus but it was a critical stage of the game. That point if india had lost a couple of wickets, would have been under tremendous pressure. Dhoni handled the pressure and scored a brilliant 91..dhoni was confident always.
I was almost 12 years old, and was watching this great final with my father. We were supporting Srilanka as our India lost in semis... Some dialogs in Commentry I cannot forget.

Arjuna Ranatunga , a master strategist ..... I remember vividly how this guy had well defined plans and right player allocated for each role. 1995 tour of Australia helped them though. Strong leader !!!
My father was really happy after Sri Lanka won the World Cup. He said “Wow, see how a small country is a world champion now !!!”

Sweet sweet memories watching this legendary Sri Lankan team wallop every other team during that era, of no internet with books being your only source of info/knowledge, box shaped CRT televisions, Maruti cars, no mobile phones and binging on Samosas and Pepsi as a 13 year old in India watching cricket on TV.
I remember that after both India and Pakistan were booted out in that WC, everybody in India was rooting for this Sri Lankan team to win the final, not just because they are our Asian brothers but also out of sheer admiration and respect of how they played their cricket in those days.
Not only is it an extremely rare phenomenon that the likes of Aravinda, Jayasuriya, Muralitharan, Vaas, Kaliwitharana et al., could come together in the first place, but also that they be led by someone like Arjuna Ranatunga, an extremely astute leader and a highly skilled batsman himself. These memories would always be inscribed in the hearts and souls of millions of others like me who grew up in that era for us to always cherish whenever we go down that memory lane.
