Mike, thanks for that information! I am here in Spencer county KY and looking to hook up my stove and I learned a lot.

glad you did sir in the old day s the stoves were not air tight so they would burn hotter and not build up the trash in you flue now the air tight stoves can be cut back with the draft and really cause a lot of smoke . un burned fuel is what smoke is .

A rusted thimble may also be caused by no chimney cap on top-rain running down the flu. A cap will also help minimize down draft.

creosote that was obtained by the distillation from the accumulation of coal and wood tar from your chimney is very good and used as a preservative for wood and as an antiseptic , I hope you didn't throw it out to trash

Used to use it on the wooden fences and it would preserve it like it was pressure treated wood.

The wetness is definitely from the humidity coming down the chimney and hitting the colder air and creating condensation just like when you bring out a cold drink into the heat. If it’s not to hard to get on the roof cover the top of the chimney in the summertime when it’s not being used. Make 2 signs that says warning do not use wood stove chimney is blocked at the top and put one sign in the wood stove so it can be seen and hang the other sign on the door of the wood stove. You really don’t want a cap or a top mounted damper at the top because during the burning season those will collect to much creosote and gunk them up and block the top. 👍🏻👍🏻

Greetings from Ireland. Nice job. Could you install some kind of damper to seal off the chimney so that air will not flow when it's not in use.

yes I'm going to make a top for the outside in summer to stop air from being drawn dow that chimney great idea Bernard

If you ever get bored and haven't done it already, you aught to install a smoke shelf in that fisher. They make a big difference in the bear series. www.hearth.com/talk/threads/simple-baffle-solution-for-your-old-fisher-more-heat-less-smoke-under-25.74710/

The best thing to use is an anti creosote powder like CRE-AWAY, or an anti creosote spray like ANTI-CREO-SOOT. It’s better to use them together. Use the powder almost every fire you have. You can pretreat your wood with the spray prior to burning, let it dry for a day. The powder and spray should be included in your burning from then on. You still need a chimney sweep to come out and give the chimney a good cleaning after using the products for a month and get a cleaning every cord of wood. No matter what a chimney should be an inspected and swept once a year unless you never use it, but most people have a gas or oil furnace separate flue passageway in the chimney that should be cleaned once a year, when that is being done have the wood stove or fireplace inspected.

Wrapping a potato in aluminum foil works a little bit. I guess it’s the starch in the potato and the chemicals in the foil that breaks down the creosote.
