Bob you mentioned the sanding jig was available at Classic Nib. We would not want to steer your viewers wrong. It is not available at Classic Nib but rather from Tim Geist directly or through Turners Warehouse. Great video and great tip on insuring the miter gauge was also square to the sander. I have had my jig a little more than 4 years, and naively assumed my miter was correct.

Hi Bob... good information and demonstration...my sander has a hook and loop system ... I have made a jig that takes the punches just like yours ...but the movement caused by the hook and loop system doesnt make the end square... I think that I will take off the hook back and stick the disc directly to the wheel ... take care...All the best.....Andy

Take a scrap piece of wood and aggressively sand it for a few seconds before trying to remove the old sanding disk. This heats the adhesive and makes removal of the sanding disk easier. Make sure to sand across the whole disk before trying to remove it so as to heat all of the adhesive on the disk. I can't remember where I first heard of this technique but this has worked great for me whenever I had to remove a sanding disk.

Thanks for all your helpful videos. I enjoy watching pen videos to pick up new ideas and ways of improving my technique. Yours are some of the best. I've been squaring off my pens basically with the same technique you use, though I put my punch in a Penn State disassembly soft jaws and clamp that to my miter gauge. Works really well. Just thought I'd share another way. Thanks.

I use one of those aluminium blocks but you gave me a tip that has already transformed the way I sand blanks because I just tried it on a few and it worked great... you clamp the jig to the mitre gauge. I was sliding the jig against the fence and, sometimes, getting the blank slammed onto the table when it got snagged by the disc. Great tip, thank you very much Bob.

Bob, you asked for comments to this video from your other channel. So, here goes! I liked it! When I first started turning pens it was this method, that I got from you, that I used to square my blanks. It worked flawlessly! However, I had a 7mm barrel trimmer and I thought, why not try it. I liked that method too! However, in continuing to use that method and spending the money on a barrel trimming set, I encountered exactly what you mention here. I was trimming some sort of acrylic and got a catch on a hard spot, or something, and it chipped the blank. Fortunately, I was able to save the blank because it didn't get all the way to the brass tube on the end and I was able to turn the rest of the affected area off. I have since gone back to this method. Very good information here from someone who knows what they're talking about! Thanks for what you do!!

YEAH! I finally found your video that tells about that super cool squaring jig you have. I have the barrel trimmer set and I am not a fan. I fell like I am always getting into the brass when I am using it and shortening my blanks. Off to purchase one of these.

Awesome information, Bob. I finally broke down and got a Shopfox 12 inch a couple months ago. I was using a little 4 inch combo deal with not much of a table. Huge difference.

@@RJBWoodTurner I also have their radial benchtop drill press. I am satisfied with their quality. They are low tier tools but they aren't junk. Of course I would prefer Jet or something even better, but as far as bang for the buck they beat horror freight...

Hi Bob - Greetings from Nebraska. Great video as always. Although my jig is a little different and I have a smaller disk, we follow the same procedure almost to the letter. It has solved so many problems compared to using the barrel trimmers - even the expensive carbide models. I keep a small machinists square right next to my sander and verify square frequently, especially when I have a pen I am being extra careful with.

you should consider adding a velcro systam to your disc. half the velcro is glued to the disc, then you can easily change the sanding pad

For those without a dedicated sander (like me) you can take a faceplate and make a sander for your lathe and there is an offset jig that Rick sales goes onto your tailstock (either on a jacobs chuck or screws onto a mt adapter) of you lathe and then all the same principals apply for the sanding and spacing the punch from the sand paper. The other good thing about using the lathe for sanding is it should already be square or you got bigger problems ;) Another problem I had with barrel trimmers is I use wood from my farm and it is much to big around to start with for barrel trimmers to completely trim to the edge. If I had seen a video like this when starting off I would have never purchased a barrel trimmer.

I want to say that you need to make sure your miter slot is parallel to your disk as well because a misalignment creates a bevel as rotate the blank. So,the top of the table may be square to the disc the travel across can be out of square even though you squared the miter gauge to the disc. Same maintenance checks as a table saw.

My disk sander is a 6". I also have the Ridgid Oscillating Spindle/Belt Sander.
Which would you use?
If you also had the the Ridgid would you use it or the 9" disk?

I think the 6” disk should work fine. I didn’t see it in the store but if you call, they make a smaller version for smaller disk sanders.

Thanks Bob, good video. Not sure how old your sander is, but mine is 13 years old. There are two brass sleeves one on each side of the top roller, you need a small press to get them out, and in. Mine wore out I had to order a dozen so if yours ever wear out give me a holler.

Any tips to help get even pressure against the sander? I can't get square blanks even using this method. I usually switch to my pen mill on the lathe, but foe the life of me I can't get a straight hole either.
Something has to be out of alignment, have you checked the table is square to the disk. The miter square to the to the disk and table. The jig square to the miter, table and disk.
Pressure is never a factor, I don’t use much pressure at all when sanding.

I found mine at either harbor freight or lowes I don't remember which but I'm sure any place that sells disc Sanders and supplies has them and they are very inexpensive.
Old shoe sole works too...
Great video Bob...but I think you skipped a step..why do u use the jig instead of putting the blank directly on the mitter and sanding it that way..
That will work if the blank is perfectly square. Using the jig it squares to the tube regardless of the shape of the blank.

If the blanks are perfectly square you could just use the miter to square the blanks. You
Don’t need this jig.
If there not perfectly square then you won’t be able to square them perfectly.

great video. Does this work better than the jig you made seven years earlier? I thought that squaring your blank using the earlier jig would be less prone to error.
This is hands down the best and easiest to use jig for squaring pen blanks. I also love it for cleaning up the C/A at the ends of a blank post finishing. Perfectly square/flat ends are crucial for a good component fit.

Seems like those miter gauges love to get bumped or something all the time, I have to loosen the screw on the pointer and reset it to zero alot, I think its a craftman thing. LOL

Hard woods, soft woods, acrylics, deer antler. I used it for all materials. The only issue is some materials load up the sand paper more than others so have to clean it more often. The jig performs flawlessly.

4:32 woodworker's rule #1. Never trust built in gauges and scales on any tool unless you know for sure it is accurate. I really wish the manufacturers would just leave these off and force us to check manually. I have even found discrepancies in cheap tape measures.
