Re: finding the center of the blank... Here's the reason you have to do all 4 sides... I know you all are thinking... But we were told 2 sides! Well, 2 sides is enough if your blank is an exact square. But most blanks aren't. Some are not even rectangles (all right angles). That's why you need to mark all 4 sides. 💜🌞🌵😷
The proper way to find the center is to draw the diagonals, 2 lines and its exact. The method he is using isn't as accurate.
Thank you Suzi.
Very good recovery Bob turned out a beautiful pen, i retired last year and took up pen making and must say i really enjoy it, i buy Taylors Mirfield kits here in the UK really good quality kits for the price, ive followed your workshop for some time now and have learnt a lot from you keep up the good work bud.
Thank you Chrissy,
I appreciate you following my channel and I’m glad you found it helpful in your pen journey.

Hi Bob - Greetings from Nebraska. Very cool video - is that a new drilling vice? - Dave
I’ve had it about a year. I bought it second hand from a buddy of mine.

Bob
This is beautiful. I love a good fountain pen, I cannot wait to try this.
Thank you.

Bob
Great channel. Do you have any information/plans for your buffing wheel?
Thank you Wayne,

Hi.. What do you use to clean the sanding disc? 3:50 Or could you send me a link to the product on Amazon to see if I can get it in my country? Thanks
Sorry for the Delay,
Here is a link to the rubber eraser I use to clean the sans paper disks.

I don't understand why you're not using a mandrel in this video. Does this pen kit require you to not use a mandrel?
No, you can easily use a mandrel with this kit. I used one in my most recent video which is the same kit except it’s a rollerball. I just go with what I prefer using on any given day. One way is not better that the other, I like to show options in my videos. What ever you are most comfortable with using is the correct method in your shop.
Regards,
Bob
Hi Bob, That is a beautiful pen. I'm glad you liked the kits. Thank you for the mentions as well. I really appreciate it. Take care Bob. Cheers, Huw
Thank you Huw.
I hope to turn the roller ball soon. I have the blanks tubed and trimmed. Just need some shop time.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner Hi Bob, I'm really looking forward to see what you use for the blank. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Gorgeous. I have one hybred blank and wondered how to finish it. I haven't used it because of that.
Thank you Lelia,
I hope it turns out beautiful.
Are you using a live center in headstock? Don't think I noticed this before. Pen is great as usual.
Hello Edwin,
I use a drive center in the headstock and a live center in the tail stock.

Bob
Where did you find that kit exactly? Gorgeous pen by the way.

WHAT RPM'S ARE RUNNING WHEN BUFFING???? PLEASE
Hello Lawrence,
I buff at 1,100 RPM. You should try several divergent speeds to see what works best for you.
Regards,
Bob
I love using black CA for small defects.
I should pick up a bottle of black.

Bob
That is one beautiful pen. Do you have any advice on how to turn a hybrid blank which will be resin and cork material. Even better let it be the next video. Thank you for the time in sharing your expertise with us. Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa.
Hello Brent,
I have never turned cork. I’d say as long as your tool is razor sharp you should be able to make clean cuts. You may try stabilizing the cork before turning it into a hybrid blank with resin. I’d love to try one,, just don’t have access to anything like that at the moment.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner Thank you very much for the information.
Doesn't a triple start thread mean three different possible "tight" positions, so you have a 66% chance of your top not aligning with your bottom? Although if you were using a blank that didn't have a pattern alignment, or ultimately the end user didn't care about keeping it aligned in use, it wouldn't matter, I guess. Beautiful pen, btw. I love fountain pens.
...just kinda mystified why the kit manufacturer would opt for a triple start thread when you'd figure most of the people making such an elegant pen will be interested in keeping the alignment perfect every time.
I am not an expert but your description is accurate with how I understand the triple start.
The one nice thing about it is the cap will fully tighten with one turn instead of two or three.
Regards,
Bob
If you drill on the lathe it will always be centered, I no longer even mark centers.
Not necessarily,
You still have to do due diligence on aligning the blank. If it’s off you can oval the hole which o have done many times and still do on occasion. It all takes practice.
Regards,
Bob
I would like to know where you got that punch? It's not in your tool list.
If you’re referring to the gold colored punch that I mark blank centers with, I picked it up at Harbor Freight but pretty much any big box hardware store carries them. Just ask for a spring loaded center punch.
Regards,
Bob
Excellent Bob, I really like the TM. Omegas. A beautiful pen. 👍❤️👍❤️👍
Thank you Eric.

I enjoy all your videos that I have watched
I do have a question I am new to pen turning and have done a few that have turned out great but how do I keep from getting glue or epoxy from inside the tube while I am glueing it in the blank it is a pain to clean it out before the bushings will fit
Thanks for your help in advance
Rob
When you insert the tube covered in glue, do not pull it back while twisting it. When you do that then push it forward again, it scrapes the glue off the blank and deposits it inside the tube.
You can plug the end of the tube which will keep the glue out. You can use wax, play-doh, or even a piece of potato.
Regards,
Bob

Thank you Ted,
I believe my wife ended up with that one.

Nice pen. Where do you get your turn between center bushings and are you able to use bushing sets for multiple pen kits?
I get TBC bushings from the Classic Nib.
The bushings I used in this video were standard bushings, they work just as well.
I get many pens out of a set of bushings. I’ll bet I have Sierra bushings that have turned 50 plus pens.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks for the info
Hello again!
I was just wondering how long you let your ca glue dry between layers, and then how long you let it dry before micro meshing? Thanks
Thin C/A dries in less than 30 seconds. Medium can take 10 plus minutes between coats.
I micro mesh as soon as it’s dry to the touch.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner thank you!! That helps. I’ve learned everything about pen making from your channel, so thank you!
Thank you Marie,
That is quite a compliment.

does the omega write well?
I never inked it.
It has an Iridium nib like most all of the other kit fountain pens so I would expect it would write similar.

Bob

That rubber thingy that you used to clean your sanding disk works really well, what's it called? ❤🌅🌵😷
Abrasive Cleaning Stick for Sanding Belts, You can buy them almost any where that sells sandpaper. Bobs a great teacher on the pens, etc.
Thank you James.

Bob
James beat me to the answer and he’s spot on.
Regards,

@@RJBWoodTurner, does the cleaning stick work on regular sandpaper? I have a random orbital, but also use the hand sanding block that gets clogged up too. 💖🌞🌵😷
It works best on high speed papers.
I don’t know how well if at all it would work on a RO sander.
Stunning blank and pen
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
Fountain pens were the scariest for me the first time, had different size bushings for the pen and cap, then it was match up the correct parts....read twice put together once before i screw it up, really made me concentrate on my work lol....in the end though utterly the most beautiful pen I've ever made...now i see why the kits are a tad pricey compared to others. Love the blank that was chosen for yours.
Thank you Jay,
They can be daunting but you are right, they make beautiful pens.
Regards,
Bob
Great finish on that pen. In the video it is difficult to really tell the difference. Did going the extra steps of dry sanding with the micromesh add anything to the final finish? Did you skip the Renaissamce wax application or just not film it?
IMO, I think it made a difference with the clarity of the blank. It also allowed me to avoid the wait after wet sanding.
The wood doesn’t need the sanding but the acrylic does.
I did use the Renaissance wax, I forgot to turn the camera on and film it. 😃
Regards,
Bob
That was a very nice blank! I love the colors! Beautiful pen!

Great job
Thank you.
Awesome pen and a SUPER job on turning it. I would keep it too !!
Thank you Michael.
Regards,

Nice, I'm still too chicken for the skew.
Draw a line on the center of your skew with a marker. As you turn, never turn above that line. Catches happen above center with the toe of the skew. You will never get a catch below center.
Also raise the tool test so your coming in a little above center, almost on top of the turning.
Regards,
Bob
@@RJBWoodTurner I have no sharpening tools, they are expensive, so it's been just replacement cutters for me.
@@calvinwendland8373 with the view, as long as you don’t drop it you can get away with card files to keep it sharp.

Hello! So I’ve turned my first pen and it turned out great!
I’m turning my second pen and I ran into a rather big problem.
I was using ca glue to fill a chip out near the end of the blank, and had my nonstick bushings on and everything, but some how ca glue seemed down into the mandrel and now the black is completely stuck and I can’t get it off. Any suggestions on how to get it off, or will I have to buy a new mandrel? Thanks!
Soak the end of the mandrel in Acetone.
That will release the C/A glue.
Unfortunately it will also destroy the blank.
Regards,
Bob
Boil in water. Dry and oil straight after and worry the parts from each other. This will save your mandrell.
