Thank you for the video. I'm new to turning and want to make my own blanks. Question, I don't have a pressure pot, is it 100% necessary? I have some experience working with resin, I pour slowly and use a heat gun to pop bubbles.
The rice suggestion is very helpful! I have a future project of some Sycamore limbs to put into resin for a bowl blank. They are mostly about 1 1/2” diameter with big knots from my daughter and son in law’s yard. Those trees are very messy! Anyway, if I can I am going to turn a bowl with them as a gift. I am an extreme beginner with turning, have turned one practice spindle, and have never mixed any resin. So I had been trying to figure out how to best estimate how much to mix up. Obviously I will do some more simple projects before I attack the bowl.😸
I'm an amateur resin girl. Wish I could have seen the results. I don't use social media (other than watching UA-cam videos for resin,, etc.. Anyways, I enjoyed learning about all the tools, such as, your buffer, bandsaw, using a timer, a pressure cooker....and the thermometer is a great idea too! Thank you! I love your shop! Right now, I just have a foldout table with all my glitter & pigments, in a spare room. 🤣🤣🤣
My husband and I made countertops for the kitchen in our cabin using epoxy resin. It was so scary at first but man the results were ever so worth it! The process is very similar, yet different for the pen blanks but at least now it's not scary after watching your video. Thanks for sharing!
Jake thank you so much for the shout out really appreciate it loving your channel and really cant wait to meet you at makers. Your blanks are amazing love them. keep up the great work :-)
Good helpful vid, thanks! I would like to ask - when and why to use a pressure pot VS a vacuum chamber? I want to stabilize some wood and then cast it in Alumalite, but it sounds like I need to stabilize with vacuum and cast with pressure. Can you help me understand why ? Thanks!
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment.. The Alumilite clear slow resin only has a 12 minute working time, it’s not enough time to use vacuum to remove the bubbles. You can use epoxyresins that have a 45 minute working time, then you can use vacuum if that’s your preference.
I've recently started casting resin for knife handles. My first attempt I left the blanks in the pressure pot for 3 days. They were soft when I took them out and hardened over a week. My next two attempts were both epic failures. I had them under pressure overnight and again they came out soft. I measured by weight correctly but don't understand why its not working out. Were the blocks rock hard after two or three hours and finished them off in the same day? Thanks
I use alumilite clear slow and have lots of videos on how to use it.. i cast the blanks and 2 hours later I can take them out and demold them.. We use alumilite clear slow on our live show we do every Saturday on this channel..
Your content is amazing, really enjoying all that you share...I'm new to turning and wanting to try resin casting, would it be possible to do 2x2x6 inch blanks with alumalite slow for making pepper mills without the resin over heating?

Great video, great demonstration, great production. I like how you keep it entertaining and moving. Can you use a vacuum pump instead of a pressure pot? What pressure for the pot? The cactus piece "cholla" is pronounced "choya", the two Ls sound like a Y. One of the best demonstrations on UA-cam. Thanks!
Capt_Beefheart Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed!! 👍 if you have resin with a long pot life you can use vacuum, but I’m using a resin with a pot life of 12 minutes, so I use pressure to get rid of the air bubbles. 👍
Awesome video. Can you reuse the measuring cup again? How do you get all the epoxy out EDIT: should’ve kept watching haha. But how do you clean them. Just in the sink? How do you keep the epoxy from hardening in the pipes
Always Bolt the Bird lol! I just put acetone on a paper towel and wipe them out. I just recently started buying cups in bulk from amazon. I still will reuse them but it’s lots cheaper when you buy 100 at a time.
Thank you Jake, step by step procedure for casting very nice blanks. Always good to know information with all of the needed materials. How is your shop build going or have I missed the videos?
Ed Allen Thank you Ed.. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.. I haven’t started the build yet.. I have one more resin project and then the build. I was in England the last couple weeks, I put a video out on that!! 👍👊
Sean Murphy A pressure pot makes air bubbles invisible. The resin I was using requires a pressure pot to eliminate bubbles.. There are some resins that do better at casting without a pressure pot.. I will put a link to my liquid diamonds pen blanks video HERE: ua-cam.com/video/vn9AikVmlBk/v-deo.html
Have you used the plastic cups like the red ones used for parties? I’m thinking would melt I saw mixing cup at my Lowe’s like yours they start at qt size and go up from there on the sizes not to pricey but when you use as many as you 💰goes up like to find some can reuse
Eric Richardson I left it in there for about 10 minutes and let air dry, then used air compressor to dry it.. if I do it again I think I will use a small wire brush to rough up each hole on the honeycomb.
Jake- I’ve watched this video a few times and I want to say thanks . It’s very helpful. One question- is 12 min open time the main criteria or 95 degrees before putting in the pp? In other words if it’s still not up to temp is it mission critical to get it in the pot by 12 minutes ?
12 minutes is a guideline.. the temp in your shop will make your working time shorter or longer.. the 95-105f degrees is the right temps for color separation.. sometimes it may take 14 minutes to get up to temp.
The solid colored ones turned out really cool! For me, the red and green was too dark for the ones with the other components and kinda hid all that cool stuff 😢 Maybe next round try a lighter or more translucent color to show off all those cool ingredients in your....popsicle 🤷🏻♂️😉
Dimensionswoodworks I’m going to try all different colors.. I’m going to wait until these are turned into pens before I decide to do some changes.. I can’t wait until Laura turns a few of these.. 👍👍
ok so I have watched to many to count videos on making pen blanks using resin etc your video is the first Ive seen talk about the temperature issue is this with all resins?
gulfmedic1 Yes. If you want the different colors to stay different colors you need to wait until a certain temperature to pour the different colors together. If you just pour them in together at a lower temperature they will just make a different color.. yellow and blue make green, red and white make pink, and so on.. for the resin I use in this video let the temp get to 98f. On longer pot life resins let the temp get to 120f. I hope this helps. I learned this from Pam Harris at Highland Boxes.
@@JakeThompson just to be clear if i wanted to mix red and blue but i wanted the colors to stay original i would mix two batches of a and b then mix the batches together correct
gulfmedic1 You can do it that way. I usually will mix A and B together and get them fully mixed, then divide that amount in half into 2 different cups, then add the red to one cup and blue to the other cup. Then wait until they reach temperature and pour them together.
Like you said Jake can buy some of the sheet material and make bunch for same price as 2-2 other wise you need to have someone make them I have Granger close buy so I buy mine sheets save cost of shipping can make more molds Thanks a Jake for the post
