About Oldboy 올드보이(2003) (Source Wikipedia):
The film follows the story of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), who is imprisoned in a cell which resembles a hotel room for 15 years without knowing the identity of his captor nor his captor's motives. When he is finally released, Dae-su finds himself still trapped in a web of conspiracies. His own quest for vengeance becomes tied in with romance when he falls in love with an attractive young sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung).

Who else loved the Oldboy reference in the video game, Sifu?
I didn't know the hallway fight in the level where you go after The Artist was based on this fight scene. That section was honestly one of the highlights of the game and it's really cool to see the original work they took inspiration from.
that fight is one of the most fun fights in the first level
Would love to see a Sifu breakdown, maybe some of the finishers or boss fight finishers.
@@sevirkenevans Here is our Sifu SHORT breakdowns:
ua-cam.com/users/shortsqGxRUvoGGys?feature=share
I haven't played Sifu yet, but I plan to buy it on Nintendo Switch in the next few months.
Fun fact, the reason the fight was filmed as though they were all tired and fatigues is Choi Min-sik was on 48hrs of no sleep, and Director Park was mandating a new take constantly because it was missing something. It was only on this 17th take when Dae-Su was almost falling over during the fight that Director Park said he found what was missing.
6:43 I think it’s worth considering that Oh Dae-su does not intend to use lethal force. He has no issue brutalizing people but he always leaves them alive, and I think that’s maybe why he drops the knife; he’s afraid of going too far. At some point I would be interested to see your take on knife combat where someone was trying to incapacitate but not kill!
Great interpretation of the scene and you’re very likely to be correct. Do you know any knife scenes where the person is holding back? We’ll take a look at it.
@@ScenicFights Maybe the end fight from Dune (2021) between Timothee Chalamet and Babs Olusanmokun?
@@Moschetti_yeti Props to you for recognizing Babs!
@@ScenicFights Also, while he was trapped in his room and training, he drew himself a human target on the wall and used it to practice on, so that could explain his good distancing!
@@StuffyMc Right, the film establishes very firmly that he has a punch like a sledgehammer from just punching a masonry wall all day for years. So that explains how he can punch people out so easily.
The thing that reveals the artifice of this scene the most is actually the fragility of the sticks these guys are using. A heavy piece of wooden doweling like that would more likely break Oh Dae-su's forearm than snap over it.
And Chad is 100% right about liver shots! Brutally painful and debilitating in the moment. Plenty of high caliber pro fighters can attest to that.
Great breakdown, guys!
I've always felt this scene had a big impact on the fight choreography in Daredevil. It had its flaws, sure, and I thought it was unrealistic to have a single guy fend off tens of assailants like that. But it was a wild ride nonetheless.
Also, you guys should breakdown the machete fight from the raid redemption. So much muay thai in there, and fending off multiple assailants with weapons in there.
There are never too many Raid scene breakdowns.
The Raid Machete hallway fight scene would be awesome for these guys to do. Both of them could dissect so much from that fight.
The elbow combo that Rama did to the last Machete guy in that fight is one of my most favourite finishing moves from The Raid
muay thai in a movie set in Indonesia?
what is Silat?
I just know Muay Thai is a fighting art style with bare hand and kick and never using a weapon like machete 🤔
Didn't know about this movie before the breakdown but that was one of the most cinematically appealing scenes I've seen in a while.
It’s beautifully filmed. I highly recommend giving Oldboy (the original 2003 Korean version) a view!
Its not really an action movie but damn that hallway fight scene goes hard. Really recommend you to watch this movie. Its one of the best Korean films out there
This definitely a movie you wouldnt want a spoiler.. have yoi watched it? How was it?
One thing with the double weapons thing, I don't think most people are co-ordinated and familiar with complete replacement of their hands. And even though you can "grab"/claw with a second weapon, its natural to want to have a free hand to block/parry/push etc. I think because Oh Dae Su taught himself boxing mostly, he reverted to the power hand technique, and simply opted to modify it from a punch to a hammer.
Really love how you go beyond just techniques in this breakdown and others. Points out the difference between sport and "real" fights, and also just the fight mentality in general.
Remember that in the movie he basically only shadowboxed in a room for years to learn how to fight and this was his very first real test of that. The errors were proof that he was still not practiced in real world applications yet. Good thing he seems to adjust and learn quickly.
I'm not a fighter or fight tactician by any means but I think the reason he initially goes through everyone and breaks the funnel is because there's a wall behind him so it would be easy for them to just corner him to the wall and break him down. Once he goes through them to create the second funnel, Oh Dae-Su has a lot more space to work with and can ultimately escape or at least distance himself correctly.
I believe both that, and that by getting to the other side retreat was a much more viable option. The elevator is right there, and only so many would fit.
Nicely done, gents! Always excited to get a notification from Scenic Fights, and as usual, you did not disappoint. This scene has its flaws, but it's super iconic, and really set the tone for future films and TV shows where a protagonist faces large quantities of assailants.
100% The Hallway fight scenes from Daredevil and The Raid are the first to come to mind. Furthermore, The video game Sifu also did an excellent job paying homage to Oldboy.
What an amazing breakdown! Oldboy (the original of course) is one of my favorite movies of all times... That hallway scene is beyond iconic!
Oldboy has influenced so many hallway fights scenes. It’s certainly beyond iconic!
Bas Rutten used to have this attack where pretends to mistime a punch and as his opponent is focused on that, he comes up with a kick to liver that just sends them to the ground. Also, in the book 'Legionnaire', Simon... whoever, talks about being taken to the ground and surviving.
Looks like Logan's done some TaiJi Chuan.
Ages ago - good eye!
@@logan607 Interested to know - did you do HEMA as well or is your sword-fight analysis from the parang or the kamiplan or something?
I'm not too familiar with Kali, having done less than five minutes of it (still, I think it's 5 mins more than anyone else than anyone else in the country I live in). The guy who taught me (if he was genuine) showed me an empty handed technique that looked... almost like a slow capoeira ginga, is the best way to describe it. Wouldn't know what that technique would be called of course.
I did a flyer for him so he gave me a free lesson.
I've only officially done kali when it comes to weapons work but I Def find HEMA fascinating and studied a few things about it on my own here and there.
Very cool review guys! To me personally what gets unrealistic in overall fights scenes is the fact there a bunch of people with big long sticks in a closed small corridor, even if they swings their weapons it would hit the ceiling or the walls, that might be the reason that they don't use it in slash or contusive ways but just piercing strikes on the mc.
Always thought it was a case of "he dropped the knife because he didn't plan on killing anyone"
I practice Chinese traditional Martial Arts, and I agree that distancing is really hard to understand without 2 person drills/sparring. My Sifu had us do a lot of 2 person exercises, and you learn very quickly that practicing your forms is only part of the training. Even if you're only doing 'health and wellness' Taiji, the healing part relies on the energy being channeled properly - which you learn from 2 person work.
Love your channel! Keep up the good work! :)
I have been waiting for this breakdown and it did NOT disappoint! Incredible commentary and breakdown of the fight and the extra about the training was awesome.
Thank you so much! It’s always good to read that a breakdown lived to someone’s expectations. Let us know which other fight scenes you still would like to see us breakdown!
Don't forget Dae-su trained on a silhouette carving on the wall. Feels like he learned his distance management from that. Not to mention the conditioning on his hands and the cardio.
Damn man, I think this break down is content-wise the best one up until now. Love it! And what Logan said about shadow boxing is so true, because you don't have a target to determine whether
you performed the technique correctly. And Chad is right about liver shots too
Really appreciate the comment! We have some awesome breakdowns coming up so can’t wait to share it with ya :)
Has anyone besides the algorithm noticed my devotion to commenting for the algorithm gods on all long form videos? If not, devotion(to the algorithm) is its own reward
Of course! We notice it! The Algo Gods have gotten smarter though. Sometimes a comment without mentioning them is more effective. Comments that creates discussion about the movie or the video always pleases the algo gods more! Have you seen Oldboy?
Always love some oldboy representation. My favorite korean film. Another thing I'd like to add, (nothing to do with commentary just pure film nerdiness) the cinematography of the scene if you look closely is shot in a way which shows the mc's struggle. Its like initially when he is winning, the camera moves to the right, but when he starts losing, the camera starts to move to the left. When he gets into a deadlock, the camera just stops moving and goes still. And then he gets out of the deadlock, the perspective changes now when he hits, the camera moves to the left and when he goes defensive/goes backfoot the camera moves right.
Thematically this is such masterful storytelling as it shows our character faces a dilemma, goes to fight it head on, makes some mistakes, gets punished for them (literal stab) and then comes out of it a totally changed man. Beauty in violence.
Wonderful interpretation of this fight scene!
@ScenicFights please break down the judo in old boy the last fight is so brutal its amazing
I thought that it was smart that sometimes, Oh Dae-su actually put one of the knocked out guys in front of the group to slow them down a bit. Also, it narrows the funnel temporarily.
Been awhile since I’ve been this early
Glad to see you here :)
One of the classics I had watched countless times.
Before the internet blackbelt, there was Oh Dae-su, the prison TV boxing champion.
First Kill Bill and now Oldboy? This is amazing, 올드보이 (OldBoy) is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I think the reason why the fight unfolds this way is because Oh Dae-Su and his opponents don't go with the intention of killing the first one, just dealing a lot of damage, but without killing the opponent. That's why Oh Dae-Su drops the knife and that's why his opponents stop kicking him (and they aren't using melee weapons) and let him stand up after they plunge a knife into his back. Woo-jin doesn't want Oh Dae-Su to die and that's why he must have given explicit instructions to the thugs not to kill Oh Dae-Su, that explains why they fight in that way that seems unreal. On the other hand, Oh Dae-Su is looking for his revenge against the one who kept him captive all those years but he is not interested in killing anyone who is not his captor, that is why he does not use the knife in the first instance as a secondary weapon. Due to the context in which the fight takes place, I would give it a higher score, since it is not a conventional fight, but something with specific pre-established rules.
Very solid analysis when considering the lore of Oldboy. But! If this was a real fight, highly unlikely Oh Dae-su makes it 😟
@@ScenicFights I totally agree. Thanks guys for the episode, I really enjoyed it
I know it’s hard to show as a reaction and the structure would have to be different but I recommend some manga or comics you can discuss. Teppu and All-Rounder Meguru are specifically MMA focused and just pick up any chapter with a match or real fight and it’s fun and engaging.
Super solid breakdown, once again.
However, I can't get over how cute Chads socks are :D
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
nice omage to Street Figher 2 on that T-Thirt, it got the same font.
breakdowns are always fun to watch when people with years of experiance can confirm what the actors are doing right or wrong.
Getting so many great anime/show recommendations! I'm obsessed with Akido and scrappy street fighting; this is a great resource for writing fight scenes! ❤️
Ohhh we getting into the legendary shit
The rapport and patter between you two is always fantastic. It's cool seeing two dudes who are friends making great videos like you both do.
Another insightful breakdown. Love what you guys do, it's equal parts entertaining and educational. I'd really love to see Chad break down some of the boxing from the Rocky franchise. Especially Rocky 4 since that's my favorite.
Great video guys! I’ve been looking forward to this breakdown!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another awesome breakdown by our amazing duo, thanks for your work. For future breakdowns I'd like to see some both cool and realistic scenes where we actually can see the perfect techniques.
@scenicfights One of my favorite fight scenes too this one, hadn't realized a lot of what you were pointing out till now and it all makes perfect sense. Great explanation of both the cinematic and the real world
Very happy to read you enjoyed our Oldboy breakdown! We always try our best to separate reality and cinema in these fights.
another great video!!!
Love you guys. Great video exploring a classic scene.
Thank you! Let us know which other classic fight scene we should breakdown next.
Finally one of my fav movies and fav scenes of all times is getting a review by the best here. As ways awesome content, all the insight and effort you all put into the long reviews is greatly appreciated.
Happy to see you here as always Douglas! Thank you for enjoying our Oldboy breakdown 💪
A long time coming! So glad its finally here!
Happy we can upload this one for you! Did you enjoy our Oldboy Breakdown!?
@@ScenicFights Indeed, I always like the highlights and breakdowns mixed with more practical takes on the scenario.
Honestly everyone makes mistakes in the fight and that's partly why I like it so much. Dae-Su pays for quite a few of his mistakes, though I do agree with the contention that being taken down to the ground probably would've ended the fight earlier. My only real defense would be that this group of henchmen were clearly quantity over quality. They are probably just hired muscle there to save the Warden. A bunch of young men with bad tempers and no where to go. Kind of like the group Dae-su encounters earlier in the movie, when he puts his shadowboxing skills to the test for the first time (and dons those stylish woman's sunglasses). They wildly swing and miss, second guess their strikes, expend energy crazy fast, and get frustrated easily by anyone that doesn't just backdown as expected. Similar to the hordes of street thugs you encounter in the Yakuza games. Scary in a pack to the average person, but when faced with even someone like Dae-su who has a barebones amount of training but a tremendous amount of passion, their cracks start to show.
Speaking of Yakuza... Any more chance of breakdowns on those games, their cinematic fights, fighting styles, and more heat actions maybe? The games are pretty over the top, so I'm sure not everything would be practical, but still fun perhaps.
Always love seeing new uploads from you guys. Thank you for the videos!
Awesome write up! In regards to Yakuza we’ve done them in our UA-cam shorts and plan to do more!
@@ScenicFights Sounds awesome, you guys keep doing you. Love the channel!

I wanted this seen ever since The Raid 2 breakdown. Love this movie and scene in particular. Thanks, guys!!
Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoyed our breakdown.
I love when you share some life experience with us.
Loved this breakdown, well done, guys.

As always very good analysis❤
I wonder if you could do knife fight of Leon vs Krausser from Resident Evil 4
Probably will do it once the REmake of RE4 is released.
and not always write a comment but I really appreciate you take longer content and not always fertilized to making shorts
Thank you so much! Our goal is to satisfy both longform fans as well as fans of shorts.
Awesome! Thx for the breakdown guys :)
Our pleasure! Let us know which other movie we should breakdown next 💪
Amazing video! I usually don't stick around channels related to breakdowns of any kind 'cause I get bored easily and only end up watching those from my favourite scenes (like Oldboy lol), but you guys make it so straight to the point and fun at the same time that I think I've watched every video on your channel so far even if I haven't seen the movie or the show, keep it up! As a recommendation, I think Bullet Train has some good moments for you to analyse, the fight in the quiet coach for example
That’s our goal! To make these fight scene breakdowns fun and entertaining. Bullet Train is a possibility!
One of my favorite movies, and hands down one of the best fight scenes in cinema. Thanks for the breakdown.
Nice seeing Logan breakdown something after a while, btw are you guys gonna continue those anime breakdowns?
100% especially in May because every May is AniMAY for Scenic Fights where the entire month is dedicated to anime breakdowns. Which anime should we breakdown next?
@@ScenicFights I guess Hajime no Ippo comes first? Also, there is a new anime named "Mou Ippon" based on Judo. Pak would be really happy!
This was great 👌🏾👌🏾
Great video, like all the rest on this channel.
Much appreciated, Steve 💪
Informative and entertaining as usual! I appreciate the emphasis on disengagement over all else first
I honestly feel it's not responsible if we don't stress avoidance. Physical violence is the complete breakdown of communication and common sense. It happens, of course, but you should do everything you can to avoid it, especially if weapons are involved.
YES, this scene is just amazing. Thanks for breaking this fight down 👍🏻
No problem 👍 and thanks for watch as always
Compared to the raid, raid feel more refined but oldboy capture the natural fight slow punch etc, its not that realistic with the stick and oh dae soo durability but its great works
I love this channel!
Love the breakdowns. I think the reason he dropped the knife is because he didnt want to specifically kill anyone. Horribly maim, but no aim to kill.
Nice commentary guys. And good edit as always, J
Thanks Raptor
@@ScenicFights you're welcome
Could you guys cover Leon’s knife fight with Jack Krauser in Resident Evil 4 Remake vs RE4 (2005)? Like to here your thoughts on both types of fights.
Also want to know what you think of their deployment method and the types of knives being used.
Think it would be a great episode to really get into the mechanics of using a knife against another knife, as well as alternate deployment methods that might be used by a professional.
Plus you could also breakdown the kicks used by Leon, that way it’s not too one-sided of an episode.
Can you guys please breakdown some hand to hand combat from the Tomb Raider video games? Thanks…
So many to choose from! What’s your favorite Tomb Raider game?
My favs are TR Underworld and Shadow of the TR….Shadow of the Tomb Raider has a lot of bad ass combat…can you please do that one?
6:46 I always thought that the decision to throw away the knife was showing that Oh Dae-su refuses to kill, emphasizing his humanity as a character
A hammer seems for more brutal. Perhaps he wanted them to suffer in agonizing pain.
yeah he didnt want to kill anyone in the hallway, he even let his hostage go to get medical attention
Need to see this movie
Good job guys
It's dark.
The ending is one helluva gut punch (not a spoiler, but you'll see what I mean), but definitely a must-see movie if you're into Korean flicks.
@@logan607 Better, more seinen
@@TheElbowMerchant Ty!
You guys finally did it :o
We hope this breakdown lives up to your expectations!
@@ScenicFights it did, like all your other videos
3:39 I think that's actually a subtle reference to how, while imprisoned at the start of the movie, Oh Dae-su trained his knuckles until they became hard. I imagine having hard knuckles would make getting punched hurt a bit more.
I accidentally unsubscribed on my TV then resubscribed really quickly, so if you see a new user sorry about that.
As much as I love this scene, the excellent commentary really underscores for me that, as someone with a mobility impairment, there's just so much more to think about when it comes to how to handle yourself in a fight. I can think of only a very limited number of scenarios in which I might, possibly, be able to even survive a fight. And they mostly rely on the funnel concept (even with one person) because all the quick movements Chad was emphasizing just wouldn't be something I could physically do. My point not being that the situation sucks, but rather that you guys always give me new things to think about, and I appreciate that.
Thanks you so much for the awesome comment! We really appreciate having you as a subscriber. It’s always awesome to know that our breakdowns encourages you to think about self-defense in different ways! It’s always our goals to incite a conversation about martial arts.
@@ScenicFights Thanks guys! I'm sure it has been recommended to you already, but I think you would enjoy breaking down the film "Headshot" (Indonesian). The whole thing is a very good piece of art in itself, but it also has a little bit of everything. Unarmed against stick, unarmed against knife, unarmed against (mostly avoiding) guns, and hand-to-hand. Quite a few scenes you could break down and give us the scoop on whether any of it is reasonably survivable. :P
Well done!!
Hope you all can do the raid pt 2 the hallway scene and the same scene that leads to the kitchen fight sequence 🤩
Great breakdown once again.
I would very much like to see the hallway scene from Daredevil season 1, it's brilliant and would love your take on it.
I remember watching Old Boys thinking it was just gonna be a really cool action movie...
And then I read the subtitles
😂
That was your first mistake.
Liver and kidney shots are some of the most painful hits I've ever taken in life.
Good job. Like. I'm waiting for the breakdown of the final fight of "The Gray Man".
Always appreciate your views and professionalism on these movies fight scenes.
This is one of my favorite fight scenes as it's well choreographed! But i would've used both weapons for sure, against that many!
What about the remake fight scene with Josh Brolin, you guys should review that one too?
If this breakdown does well, we are open to the Josh Brolin remake of Oldboy.
@@ScenicFights Nice!
Absolutely loved old boy including the mind fuque ending in the storyline
My friends and I also evaluated that fight scene and loved the fact they included the exhaustion in their fights
We had a theory of why the enemy wasn’t using the 2x4s more often was to minimise collateral damage and whacking your mate next to you
Also I work as a nurse on a surgical ward I once looked after a guy who had a grade 1 liver laceration secondary to a liver punch, it ended his mma career
It's completely Amazing
“Ooohh!! Did he just take a knife to the back?! He’s not having a good day”
I laughed waaaay to hard at that 🤣🤣🤣
I started Cobra Kai, the Netflix show, a few days ago. I’ve been enjoying it a lot so far but as someone who’s not trained in martial arts, I would like to see you guys tackle it at some point. I know, that series is about karate and that’s not necessarily your field, but you’re still definitely way more knowledgeable than I am and maybe you can still see if some of those fights are actually realistic and tactically accurate or not.
I asked for this one a long time ago!! I still have a hammer in my car as my primary carry.
Love the allusions to classic Kung Fu/martial arts where there’s “1 vs 100” and they all sort of take their time with the hero. 😂 not realistic but I love it all the same. Great breakdown 🥳
Excellent breakdown! Let's get Warrior next!!!!!!!!
Man when logan and chad are in the same room...
Prepare to laugh...
Or to feel bad for chad...
Or logan if we have a bit lr wrestle and unarmed combat... Man i love you guys
@@ScenicFights you guys relief my depression
Lovely breakdown as always. Just would like to raise the possibility that they didn't use their weapons when they got him on the ground because so many of them are already crowding around him that they can no longer swing with enough windup to deal meaningful damage with those thin, brittle sticks. Thicker, heavier beams would've been more suitable for that. Also, the guys on the outer ring would barely have connected with him at all using those sticks.
Hey guys, as always gotta love yall’s breakdowns, would you guys be down to cover trigun stampede’s vash vs livio fight?
Great movie. Real twist ending🤯
That ending is 🤯🤯🤯
A similar scene I'd love to see you guys review is the hallway fight from "Repo Men" with Jude Law
This is amazing break down how to fight multiple people and fight multiple people had to insane but best you can is sand you ground or run.
We got Kill Bill and Old Boy in the same month? LEGENDS.
Not going to lie, the white room with the mat reminds of the training chamber from DragonBall Z where time dilates.
Question: Would dual-wielding still be effective even if you are not trained? I would imagine an untrained individual might get confused trying to use both weapons the same way trying to use your non-dominant hand in writing would be awkward.
I think so. Essentially, in situations like this, you're fighting for your life. You need every advantage you can get. Agreed, though, that there's a good chance you'll cut yourself, but the upside is worth that risk, I think.
When are you guys coming out with Scenic Fights socks?
your breakdowns are always informative and fun to watch. keep up the good work!
i have a question, regarding active sparring to gauge distance and accuracy. does hitting things like bags and dummies help with that?
That's more of a Chad question BUT I'm sure it helps; still, nothing beats active sparring, even if it's light, IMHO.
I know you guys did a breakdown of some fights from The Raid 2, but have you done any from the first movie? The fight that Rama and Andi have against Mad Dog was fantastic.
Interesting breakdown guys! Yeah this is one of those cases where the fight is choreographed to only look good for the protagonist when in reality he'd get trounced very badly.
I've seen a similar outnumbered dynamic in the final fight scenes in Tom Yum Goong (The Protector) but it's the converse case where the many go after the protagonist one at a time instead of flanking him in greater numbers AND even if they see their comrades go down because of the prowess of the one, they still keep coming at him.
Actually, the final fight scenes in Tom Yum Goong are actually worth doing a full on breakdown because it's martial arts gee-wizardry on the one hand and then you get the protagonist using improvised tonfas against bigger henchmen in a way that looks cool but is so unrealistic.
Also as a suggestion for short form (unless it's done already) looking at another "1 vs many" situation, try the church scene from Kingsman where the trained spy Harry just plows through untrained civilians like they were nothing.
You should try the bar fight or other fights in Avengement. Intense stuff
YYYEEEEESSSS about time lol
Would love to see a breakdown of Netflix The Gray Men. Thank u!
