About Mortal Kombat (2021)
Mortal Kombat is a 2021 martial arts fantasy film based on the video game franchise of the same name and a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film series. It was released in both theater and HBO Max in April 2021. The film stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Max Huang, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
The film follows Cole Young, a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who is unaware of his hidden lineage or why assassin Sub-Zero is hunting him down. Concerned for the safety of his family, he seeks out a clique of fighters that were chosen to defend Earthrealm against Outworld.
About the Video Game franchise:
Mortal Kombat is an American media franchise centered on a series of video games, originally developed by Midway Games (now NetherRealms Studios) in 1992. The development of the first game was originally based on an idea that Ed Boon and John Tobias had of making a video game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, but as that idea fell through, a fantasy-themed fighting game was created instead. The developers instead paid homage to him with character Johnny Cage, a fictional film star whose personal style resembles Van Damme's.
About Each Video Game Fighter (source Mortal Kombat wikia):
Sub-Zero has been played by two siblings, older brother Bi-Han (壁寒), and younger brother Kuai Liang (奎良). Both are blue garbed warriors who, at different times, have used the codename "Sub-Zero", and both are members of the Lin Kuei. They are descended from Cryomancers, an exiled Edenian race possessing the ability to generate and control ice.
Hanzo Hasashi, (波佐志 半蔵) better known as Scorpion (全蠍人 Zenkatsujin, "Full Scorpion Man"), is a resurrected ninja in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series as well as the mascot of the games. A warrior from the fictional Shirai Ryu clan, he is one of the very few original characters debuting in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game.
Cole Young is the protagonist of the 2021 film Mortal Kombat. He is a descendant of Scorpion through his infant daughter raised in Raiden's Temple. A one-time champion, Cole is now making his earnings as an MMA fighter until Jax Briggs introduces him to Mortal Kombat.

And we are back! We must know, who is your favorite Mortal Kombat character?
Scorpion. All day, every day.
Baraka, super cool even though NRS likes to make him a jobber (though they seemed to be fixing that in MK11, where he was an actual badass)
Tie between Raiden and Sub-Zero. They both just look so badass haha
My favourite character is John Rambo
@@gursimarsingh7980 Lmao wasn't expecting this answer, but yes he is officially a MK character now!
Joe Taslim was apparently moving so fast in filming, they had to ask him to slow down because the cameras couldn't catch him properly.
Just like Bruce Lee
@@ScenicFights Some people are just BUILT DIFFERENT!!!
Martial artists are like that. Just look at Yayan and Cecep in John Wick 3. They're slowing down terribly for Keanu and because they're not used to holding back, they look very stiff when doing it and even giving the impression of waiting to attack.
The effort to recreate the prop weapons in wood (whether that's something you've made in house or purchased) is just next level stuff. Great video as always guys.
Thank you so much! Shout out to Jason our photographer and prop master for making these himself. We always try our best to bring the best breakdowns so it really makes us smile when you notice our efforts.
@@ScenicFights mad props *wink wink* to Jason! That was a lot of work to re-create subzero sword.
@@ScenicFights dam jason has some nice prop weapons
Their Sub-Zero sword was very cool. I thought that it was a Kampilan with a plain handle at first
“I am no longer Bi-Han. I am SUB ZERO”
“Okay, what's the mask for?”
“Covid”
lmao
Fear of COVID seems irrational for someone THAT PARTICIPATES IN FIGHTS TO THE DEATH
Y’all BETTER be getting ready to analyze all of Shang Chi’s fight scenes, and I would like to see what you guys think about the meteor hammer’s use as a flexible weapon.
This! Especially the bus scene!
You guys really invested a lot in this breakdown. A katana, a wooden Sub-Zero sword, a kunai, a rope with a razor, and a pair of custom Cole Young's tonfas. Big investment in this video
We invest a lot of time in making the best breakdown possible. Shout out to our prop master Jason for the weapons. We're happy to hear you enjoyed our production!
Fans: Cole is a terrible character!
Weapons Expert: I really like that they gave the tonfas to a MMA fighter. This works well with the character.
Me: He's out of line... but he's right. Fair points but it still feels dirty to like Cole, haha.
Haha Chad wasn't too fond of Cole's character too, but Tonfas were appropriate weapons for his character.
He was better in Wu Assassins than in Mortal Kombat and that's a shame
im pretty indifferent
one one hand yeah i dont really appreciate a, comparatively, blank slate character coming in and, downing Goro and, helping down Sub-Zero, 2 of the most iconic characters in the franchise
on the other hand however, i understand the reason why they created the character, a way to introduce both old and new fans alike to this adaptation of the characters, as we, the audience, learn more as he, the character, does
is his inclusion great? not really
does it "ruin the franchise" as some people claim? again, not really
i mean c'mon the franchise survived worse than just a controversial new character
Cole being a terrible character has nothing to do with his fighting style and what weapons he has.
Comment makes no sense.
Logan just thrilled this is a weapon-centric fight and so he gets to be the pitcher this time.
To be fair, Hanzo's soul is also a part of the kunai with chain, hence why he has supernatural control over it. It's still an object so it can't just give itself to propel at the enemy, but it can consciously attack specific parts of the body, making it a more lethal weapon.
I thought it was the guard thats on the forearm thats launching it having a contraption on the inside
Things I noticed/liked/laughed:
1- Dat weapon knowledge;
2- Dat MK lore knowledge;
3- Dem Dragonball socks;
4- "please don't hurt me" when Chad picked up the tonfas;
You guys are great. Loved it as usual!
The way Chad said "fatality..... scorpion wins"......
No doubt he's a pro
Chad is a pro 100%

I love how y’all really have gotten more and more into a groove with your banter and breakdowns. I feel like your personalities are shining through more in camera than earlier videos. Love the content and keep it coming yall.
Thanks so much!! The production team is just four people and with each breakdown we just get closer and more comfortable. We plan to do a lot more of these breakdowns so help us grow our channel by simply sharing our videos with your friends and getting them to subscribe too. It really goes a long way for us! As always, let us know which fight scene you'd like to see us breakdown next!
@@ScenicFights For sure. I know what it's like making content on a limited scale and y'all are really consistent. Also a cool fight to breakdown could be from the avatar sequel series: Korra. They incorporate a lot of flourishes and moves that would be interesting to have an insight on.
"He wasn't in the game...at all"
I feel your pain. No, let's get into it.
Johnny Cage!!!
I wouldn't be surprised if we see Cole Young in future Mortal Kombat games.
@@ScenicFights I like the actor, but the character he plays is so damn generic. No thanks.
Ah yes the guys is finally coming back
And
They started it with Mortal Kombat
Amazing
Second also this channel is really great they reply and heart people comments and do the suggestions and its just awesome keep it up
They already hearted they basically sonic
Also these guys very skilled with their knife skills and fighting skills its amazing
I don’t know how you guys manage to be so informative even when breaking down fights between fire-breathing, ice-clone-making ninjas, but it’s seriously impressive. Keep up the awesome work!
If I can add to your pile of requests, Revenger is a weird movie with a variety of action sequences (group fights, sword fights, bow-and-arrow fights, etc), so there’s a lot to choose from!
Thank you for the awesome comment! Most fight scenes have some sense of realism to them, even fantasy ones, so we try to focus on what is true enough to discuss. And yes, Revenger is an awesome film! Bruce Khan is amazing and I hope we get a sequel.
You guys combine education and comedy just right. One second ı'm like zoned in and tryna learn some cool things and other second ı try to not laugh cuz ıts midnight. Watching your videos always put a smile on my face and makes my day better.

How about a “BatVSup’s warehouse” breakdown video? Pls, it has close combat and a little bit knife-fighting
Welcome back !!! Well in Chad's defense, you give any beginner a sword they would definitely cut themselves out of sheer excitement. And hey a flexible weapon might not be the most efficient weapon, but they're fun as hell to watch, like castlevania or Jackie Chan in Shanghai Noon.
Anyways you guys make nothing but top tier content, so the wait is always worth it, keep it up and hope to see you in more comment sections hehe (btw our favourite girl group has a comeback in October, see you there)
It's funny, I was playing Rondo of Blood right now. I love Castlevania, and of course, the Netflix adaptation is amazing. With that being said, yes they are super cool, but it's not the most efficient weapon. (see you in October).
@@ScenicFights Speaking of Rondo of Blood. There's going to be a Castlevania sequel anime coming to Netflix adapting Rondo of Blood focusing on Richter, and Maria's adventures during the French Revolution, and in the canon of the Castlevania games Richter was known as the martial-arts master of the Belmont family.
@@derrickhaggard I know! I cannot wait for it come out. It's not going to have the Writer or Producer so I'm a bit cautious.
Ah yes, I remember that scene from Shanghai Noon. Where Jackie Chan wraps the horseshoe on a rope around himself, then uncoils it and whips it at each enemy. So cool.
Japanese Katanas weren't widely used dual wielded as stated but there is a style: Niten Ichi-ryū created by Miyamoto Musashi a Sword saint and Philosopher, I am very interested in the origin of the Kali dual wield style and how it aligns to the tale of Musashi
I can’t wait for you guys to break down the blade work in DUNE!
I love chad reaction to cole not being in the game
With the upcoming Matrix movie, would love you guys to cover The Matrix Neo vs Agent Smith fights
yes! good suggestion
5:52 actually there is a japanese swordstyle that uses katana along with shorter blades on the other hand, it's called niten ich ryuu, originated from a Japanese duelist during early 1600s of japan.
Katana and Wakizashi, or Ninjato and Tanto. Used very often in Ninjutsu training and even for Samurai battlefield use. It does take quite a bit of time and practice to become fluid with it, because of the weight of the katana, but certainly a valid use of long and short weapons within that character's real world history.
This is a great point! Our sound mixer Rob brought this to our attention after the shoot, we should have consulted him prior. He's a Japanese martial arts expert.
Probably the only youtube channel i always like the videos before i even watch them because i know I'll love it
I agree with the reverse grip not being a good attack. But the Man from Nowhere, used a reverse grip to slash the muscle tendon under the arm pit of a guy. I think he used a couple reverse grips in that fight in A Man from Nowhere
The rules are a bit different between a knife and a katana when it comes to reverse grips due to the length of each weapon.
You don't wanna reverse grip a really long weapon, you're sacrificing a lot of reach.
With a knife, it's kind of okay, because you're still gonna be fighting in close range/arms length either way.
One cool thing about the katana being used with a shorter weapon is that its an actual style of swordsmanship by one of the most famous samurai ever, Miyamoto Musashi. His self-created style niten-ichi-ryu actually uses a katana and shorter blade together
Thank you so much for this comment! I highly recommend anyone to look more into Miyamoto Musashi and Niten Ichi-ryū
@@ScenicFights yea his book of 5 rings is definitely something I reccomend

I love these two. Shocked that Logan didn't know about the "toasty" sound
Great review. Keep it up guys.. neeeeeed more breakdowns
Let's gooooo I just hope ohma vs Raian is gonna be a topic for the future
This is also (oddly enough) one of the more realistic representations of armor. Scorpion just let his armor take the slashes because, even with a metal sword, slashing weapons don't cut through armor. Was a great breakdown.
Great comment on the representation of armor! Scorpion vs Sub-Zero was certainly the highlight of this film. Looking forward to Mortal Kombat 2.
Thank god you're back. I missed you dearly :) And great breakdown as always!
