Most people consider the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come as the most horrifying spirit, but it is in fact Marley who is the scariest. He is the eventuality beyond the event of death that proves to Scrooge that purgatory and punishment is no joke.
I think all the ghosts are scary. The Past is a talking candle that’s genderless and ageless, the Present starts off as a jolly Santa Claus figure but ages away to reveal two deformed children that represent ignorance and want, and of course the Future is a horrifying grim reaper being. Marley is also scary because he’s a chained blue ghost that is falling apart and yelling. Just my opinion.
One of the funniest parts of this film is right before this clip starts when Scrooge ask who he is and Marley tells him to ask who he was. He gives this sarcastic, annoyed “who WERE you then” as he half rolls his eyes and shrugs his shoulders. Cracks me up every time. Seriously though this movie is one of the all time greats.
Pinocchio, The Black Hole, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Black Cauldron, Return to Oz, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hocus Pocus, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.
@@tomedy_official Well you could be right in particular because in those days there was no proper dental treatment like today. However the bandage Marley wore was apparently to keep the jaws still once a person died. I don't see the point though as the body was gonna get buried anyway
Saw this movie with my best bud at theaters when we were 9 years old. Scariest moment of my life back then. We left and we got a bit more mature after this movie. Man... this still is hardcore to this day
I know everyone is focused on the split jaw scene here, but for me I was more focused on Marley's suffering in which he is doomed to wander the earth for eternity as punishment for how he was when alive. It's very sad to see him to forever be denied peace, yet he's taking this one chance to save his dear friend which makes all the more sad for he can't stay to know if he was successful or not.
Perhaps he would visit scrooge again the next year? I always thought of how scrooge would be expecting his old friend to visit again so he could tell him how his life is turning around and all the good deeds he has done. And since he inherited all of his money when he had passed in a way he helped end the suffering. That would bring Jacob some peace at least.
The conversation between Scrooge and Marley reminds me of conversations I’ve had with an older friend in life. Long story short he made some mistakes in life that he will be paying for most of the rest of his life. So now he’s trying to help me out so that I don’t make the same mistakes he did.
I really wish we knew what happened to Marley. I can't help but wonder if he achieved redemption from saving his friend. Hope that he was finally able to rest in peace.
What happened to him is irrelevant. The point is that he was selfish & uncaring towards his fellow men, & now he is being punished for his misdeeds. Once you pass away, your fate is sealed. There's nothing more you can physically do on Earth. Marley didn't save Scrooge; Scrooge saved himself. Marley only warned Scrooge about what would happen to him if he continued being the way he was. Scrooge could have decided to ignore Marley's warning & disregard everything he saw with the three ghosts, but he took the situation seriously (as he should have) & decided to change for the better. Therefore, Ebenezer Scrooge is the one who earned redemption, not Jacob Marley
@@stephenbyrne2170 Marley wasn’t doing it to help Scrooge, he was doing it all for himself. He kept lamenting for himself. 0:34 - As scary as this moment is, there's always been humour in it as well. And not every adaptation gets the humour that Scrooge, even when he's scared out of his wits, keeps on trying to treat the situation like a casual conversation and make small talk with the ghost - "You must have covered a lot of ground in seven years." The spirits of the past will linger in the halls of the mind of a man or woman that is relentless and resists change. The spirits of the present will not be forever and eventually pass onward without the relentless. The spirits of the future become the scariest to think of because we calculate the events that have been and are and decide which path to follow, so the events we chose make us wonder of what will come to if we chose incorrectly. The spirit we see in others that help us are often led astray down their own pathway with only their desires to guide them. The spirit we choose is really up to us. Ourselves.
