Over Alf's left shoulder is a pic of HD's non-biker board of directors.

As someone who just purchased a ‘24 RG CVO ST, it is the bike I always strived for. While it is my 10th HD, it was a humble Street Rod 750 that started my journey on HD bikes. I am always saddened by comments from those that disparage others for having the very things they themselves desire. Economic reality is that those high end bikes subsidize the lower ones while providing for future product development. Enough of the chip on the shoulder or looking down your nose at others for what they buy and ride. When I do the biker wave at 70 mph I don’t think nor care about the bike they ride, only that they are a brethren biker. Greetings from the US.

i payed 20 grand for a Road king in 1996. back when you couldn’t get one. loved that bike, didn’t care what i paid. just worked harder to make more money. i’d do it again if need be in a second. i’d buy a CVO, but too old now. you only live once…it’s often said, but so true.

  • @johnludmon510

The CVO bikes used to be a very exclusive club as they made a limited number of them the release was more of this is what you could have had if you had put your money down 8 months ago as the dealerships only got one or two allotted them. I have seen some posts where some dealerships have more than 20 of last year’s CVO’s still to sell and this says to me the customers aren’t there for them and HD has flooded the market. If the CVO bikes are replacing the specials and the ST baggers I can see it ending in tears. The stock bikes are well priced if expensive when compared to an equivalent Goldwing or K1600 and the Pan is on par with the GS1300 the problem is that in today’s economy people aren’t buying or prepared to finance these big ticket toys and at this moment HD have all their eggs in this basket.

Jeez Alf, turn up that space heater man. You look cold.
Skip the CVOs. Those sell to a handful of people. I think HD knocked it out of the park with the Street/Road Glides this year price/looks wise. $26k for essentially last year's brand new CVO and they aren't all covered head to toe in black or gray. To get the Specials last year with etched wheels/chrome engine bits was easily mid 30s. And the new one has a bigger engine, is lighter, and I'm pretty sure they got rid of the slammed shock nonsense too. IOW, for $26k you can ride out of the dealer with a peppy, good looking, properly suspended bike that needs nothing besides maybe a backrest of you plan to carry a pillion.
Personally, I think they killed it, but that's if you can find one with one of the nicer paint schemes. So far, the only thing that's showed up to local dealers are in battleship gray, and I'm not looking to join the Navy, but there's hope for those willing to look around.

Sadly the ONLY way to see a price decrease is if you try n compare it to previous models 😕
The truth is that Harley is simply giving you a slightly greater "value" for the price, but they have increased the price as well. If Harley had given us these updated models at the same price, then its truly a price decrease.
If they upgrade a motorcycle but charge you for the upgrades, then they didn't GIVE us anything really

I think you nailed this one. It is clear that HD is going where the money is. I found it interesting that they have reduced the model count, and (according to my dealer) expanded the options catalog significantly. A move to cut manufacturing and inventory costs, yet, expand margins on the options. Seems similar to a move that Porsche has made.

They ran an add campaign, about 4 to 5 years ago I think.
Giving bikes away to so called celebrities.
The whole tone of the add, made it very plain, they didn't want the likes of me on their bikes.
I've rode Harleys since 1976, but the attitude the displayed broke the camels back.
Thanks for the memories Harley, good luck with your business model.

This type of brand building is old and well known in big ticket items. "Halo" products that folks aspire too or associate themselves with while owning/driving/riding an affordable version from the same brand. Our ego's fueled by our emotions are the target market of the marketing team no matter the brand. I can afford a CVO, but it would eat into other things our household values, so I ride a M8 Softail that I paid more money for than I use like most folks. It wasn't many years ago that an 80 inch EVO was the gold standard and it's hard to imagine that a 107 inch M8 with massive performance numbers compared to that EVO "isn't enough." See? Emotion fueling the EGO to write that check for a 120 inch something. Thank you for sharing, Ride Free

Really good points, but I think H-D will smashed it. Whichever way you look at it RGS & SGS are better m/cs and dare I say it better ‘value’ this year. I think H-D will see a lot of customers trading in as well as trading up. I would.

HD Inc's smug shareholder-only driven board needs to revive the base FLHS or the FLHT with Carb, zero tech, one color, zero chrome crap, and price it at $16-18K. They would sell a ton of them and some of the buyers would spend additional thousands on HD's offshore-made accessories and scabby T-shirts. FCVO, F Jochen. RIP HD Inc, 1903-1999. They care NOTHING for the American middle-class blue collar worker.

I have never owned a CVO nor would I, to me its akin to buying a Lincoln pickup truck-your not taking that overpriced piece of crap into the woods hunting let alone haul anything with it. Yes, HD lowered prices somewhat that's because in addition to plastic lifter cups the crankshaft are plastic😂!

Harley died in 2017 when they killed off many beloved models. The final nail in the coffin was October 2022 when the last Evo Sportster rolled off the assembly line.
Even if the prices were more competitive I wouldn't buy what they've got on the showroom floor in 2024 anyway.

Whatever, up or down a few hundred dollars, it's a luxury to buy a new HD tourer and clearly HD are not going for the mass market - nothing has changed here. So what did HD mean calling the 2024 launch The Dawn of a New Era? What was truly new? We got existing models with a bigger engine in the CVOs (except for the PAm) noting the new touring farings and touch screen which is everyone seems to be going crazy about, was already/previously revealed. No mention of the X350 and X500 which are the truly new models and no light weight or mid size Adv bike. You are right, HD is milking those who are going to buy a new bike for whatever they can get. Good luck to them.

IMHO it’s not as much about how much money you have as we might think, but also about your priorities. I grew up riding bikes as my primary way of transportation. Most middle class people I know have 20 - 30k € cars. Many even 2 of them and they don’t even excel in any particular aspect. I have a 1k Twingo, a 5k humongous van and a 15k (about) bike, which I bought new 4 years ago. Not everyone (actually very few people) agrees with me and that’s fine… they like the new car feeling and all the new toys on the dash board, but in my mind; my old cars get their jobs done the same (or better, depending on what it is) as 20k cars and I have 2 of them; and a cool bike. And I use them mostly in winter anyway. If 40k fall on my laps from the sky, I would probably upgrade everything in the same proportions, if anything… but there’s no way I’d spend it all in a car.
What I’m trying to say is that bikes are not expensive (not even Harleys), if you look at them as vehicles with their +s and -s; but most people now see them as toys and a 30k toy is quite a toy

Im 40, so maybe at the older end of “younger” riders. I would buy a harley if they would put out a light, maneuverable v twin with classic timeless styling that I could daily commute in heavy stop and go traffic, or back roads, if it was around 10k usd or under. Shame they never made something like that for decades…😂. Harley Davidson has lost its mind and forgot and abandoned those who put them on the map. The American lower middle class. For now I’ll stick to metric v twins for that reason.

Gets lot of hate but follow the money there most profitable segment is the big touring bikes. Price wise the increases are behind the automotive industry . The 2024 black CVO is 50k but if your a serous rider that likes HD its probably worth the money. I got RK before they were discontinued in 2022 at 20k it was a good middle ground for me love it. Id be lying if I said I wasnt tempted to be irresponsible and buy that 2024 black CVO

      @cisa1622 5 місяців тому

I agree to disagree on which one is better. Indian Scout is a very uncomfortable bike I feel(the lack of suspension and ergo). The motor on all three should be good. From many reviews it seems like each of these engines have different characteristics. I prefer the Nightster due to ease of working on it and customisation. the only thing I don’t like on Nightster is the fuel capacity.

The CVOs are similar in function to a "loss leader".
Whether they sell or not, they pull riders into the show rooms. Yes, there are a limited number of riders who have the discretionary income necessary to purchase these limited high-end bikes.
    But, they will sell!
This exposure will pull in sales, too; clever.
    PS Never finance a motorcycle!

There is nothing new in the softail segment, not everyone will want a bagger! Some are comfortable with a softail.
40k to 50k pound/dollar is pretty much luxury for the middle class customer. I hope harley davidson considers the middle class and releases some affordable softail models and 975 models for the pan america variant.

Harleys have always been expensive. If they were too expensive no one would buy them so they seem to have got it right as they've stayed in business a long time. Harley is just a business whose aim is to make money. Under the previous CEO the plan was to make lots of bikes and get more people riding - this didn't really work. The new CEO is aiming to maximise profits by making more exclusive and expensive bikes - this might work or might not. Time will tell.

This trend has been in the works since Zeitz took over…..he said in the very beginning of his regime that he was going to make Harley Davidson a high end premium bike for the rich only……that’s his vision for the future of the company….get rid of the low end bikes and turn Harley Davidson into an elitist company with lots of Woke, DEI, ESG, etc. Company…..this is why I’ve stopped purchasing anything from Harley Davidson except for maintenance products and services necessary to keep my bikes running and I perform most of my own maintenance as much as possible…..when it’s time to purchase a new motorcycle I will purchase a metric, an Indian or none at all….after 45 years I’m done with Harley because of their degraded quality, high pricing and political Marxism policies.
