I remember watching this movie hoping to someday meet a man who got those little things about me. Took me 50 years, but I finally found him. Or rather, he found me.
Soulmates? I give that relationship about four months. One year tops because it all depends on the longevity of Carol's patience and understanding and Melvin getting better.
@@Marchant2 I was never sure what they were to each other, and that's what I liked about the film. Many beautifully written scenes of building attraction, but I never felt there was sexual tension. And not because of age difference.
@@Marchant2 On what evidence do you base that jaded opinion? Certainly not on understanding the pain of the characters. Both are being brutalized by an unforgiving world. @@grandemoonlight5127 I will say that great thing I ever did in my almost 16 year marriage was divorce my x-wife. I in the 2 years since our daughter and I left, I had to learn to be 100% self sufficient. There is nothing a woman finds more attractive that a man who does not need her. GOOD LUCK!!!
The VERY last 10 seconds, I was waiting for that "last step," where Jack steps on a sidewalk crack holding the door for his woman and a stranger, and he noticed that stopped being OCD for just that one moment. I remembered that for years and years after seeing this movie for the first time. Brilliant moviemaking and storytelling.
Whether it’s implicitly intentional here I cannot say, but the scene seems to express the general concept that true love requires true engagement; surrendering our compulsive auto-pilot mechanisms for the effort and reward of conscientiousness. That wake up call we always return to and the nightmare we are always waking from(if we’re lucky)… as well as a reminder that’s it’s never too late to right the ship. Love is not merely habit. You cannot really care without awareness… if we’re lucky it doesn’t even feel like work; the keeping each other cognizant. That’s about as good as it gets.
God bless Jack Nicholson's character in this most memorable and beautiful movie. A life affirming movie for me. And others who are seriously suffering from mental illness as he is. I have an extremely bad case of OCD as he does. I rewrote these few sentences over and over and over again and I probably will for the remainder of today. I need people like Helen Hunt in my life to keep me sane. God bless whoever wrote this novel. Without a doubt someone seriously mentally ill as I am. Only the mentally ill really and truly understand what it is like to be horribly and truly mentally ill. How significant the last scene is when Jack's character doesn't notice that he stepped on the cracks in the sidewalk. Love heals all things.
It was 1999 and I went to see an old boyfriend who lived in Kansas. We had previously met each other when we lived in Germany serving in the Army 1991-1992. NIcholson had a hell of a run. Just an amazing actor in drama, horror, action, suspense, and of course comedy. Every film the man made has this special quality that isn't seen anymore. The range and sheer talent is awesome to watch. Wish Jack could make one final amazing film but his legacy is good as it is.
One of the greatest movies ever made. Its like something out of the 1940's but modern at the same time. The characters, the actors, the writing, all impeccable.
The scene where both characters conclude their kiss by almost ignoring and walking past the bakery after Melvin finally let's go of his obsession and steps onto the bricks is so suggestive and epic. Melvin is on the clean un-broken concrete while she is walking on the complicated and numerous bricks. So suggestive of the feminine and the masculine energy flowing throughout the scene, so natural and instinctive. The bakery turns on the lights and our couple remember what silly contrived excuse they made for strolling together so awkwardly at such an un-godly hour. Both stray from their individual paths and walk hand in hand together unconcerned over which steps they take, or on what ground. Mevin holds the door; realizes he has one foot squarely on familiar solid ground and the other in chaos and un-certainty, yet he chooses to follow Helen Hunt's character into whatever future awaits them both. This movie has always left me wanting more.. Hollywood at its finest.
Very well stated and observed. The entire movie examines the inherent and wonderful differences between women and men (can we even say this in 2023?). When Melvin corrects her son about saying hello, when he chastises Carol for being emotional when he is holding it together. How he does to his therapist and just screams "HELP!" as many men do to their friends/inner circle when they feel overwhelmed and emotional trying to protect the woman in their life. Just a wonderfully crafted story. When Carol cannot contain her emotion with Harold Ramis's MD character. The "you make me want to be a better man" harkening back to the stereotypical behind every great man is a great woman. Just a great study of the human experience masterfully written and acted out. Well done all around.
I am normally not big on Rom-Coms, but I do really enjoy this movie, and never tire of watching it. One line from this film that always stuck with me is in the restaurant when he tells her that she makes him want to be a better man. That is so true when you are genuinely in love. In fact, it is how you know you are really in love with someone, when they inspire you to be the best version of you.

Got to love a happy ending, they get breakfast from the bakery as a first "date",he will take good care of her and be a caring step father to her son Spencer .
I love the little realization of Jack's "speech" about being a better man earlier in the movie. Here he actually "achieves" it with the 2nd kiss... nice foreshadowing and denouemant. Great writing (and performing). These 2 characters are superb.
