Sometimes, I feel like I am the only person who misses the talent that was Harold Ramis. As a writer, Harold would sit at a typewriter and spin paper into comedy gold. As a director, Harold made movies that still make me laugh, again and again and again. As an actor, Harold could deliver dry humor like so few can.
Harold Ramis was the best! His early stuff with SCTV was comic gold! RIP.
He was one of the all time greats. So many of the greatest films, he had a hand in somewhere. I cannot wait for Ghostbusters afterlife as it's supposed to be a bit of a tribute to him. Definitely well deserved.
He was really suited to the "nice doctor" part here.

Same here. Have an 11 year old who had/has the same problem betternow with age. How many times have I been at the pediatric ER I don't dare to count between the ages of 3 to 7 years old.
So seeing this brings tears to my eyes as things changer dramatically when I went to see a specialist who put him on three different medications.
Not having a scratch test on your childs arm to see what he's alergic too is the worst I've heard. It was the only way we found he was allergic to mites and pollen. Whatvan utter disgrace
Me too. I'm a huge fan of this movie. All those nights she wished she could be sick for her son just to take his pain away, and to be told better days are on the way for her son, it was moving.

Later in the film Jack says he wants to compliment her by saying he started taking his meds again, she asked how is that a compliment to me, he replies, because you make me want to be a better man. How Cool is that !

If that movie were made in 2024, he would transform into some man-beast with a super-power and join his other man-beast chums after leaving his day job.
Maybe I'm alone on this, but every so often I see someone that just has the look of a kind person. Harold Ramis just had something in his eyes that made you feel like that.
And to that an actor and director that made us all forget life briefly and enjoy the escapism of a great film, and you have a genuinely fantastic man. Such a shame so many like him are taken so early.
The Helen Hunt era, when she was in virtually every Rom-Com and drama movie there was. I enjoyed her works.
What are the other ones? I remember this and twister and that’s about all.

I loved her old movie 'Quarterback Princess" about a high school girl who wanted to play football. Just checked and that was 1983.. so yeah.. long time fan. :-)
My father was a doctor like that. He didnt care about money just helping people. I miss him so much, how I wish he were here now.

Unfortunately, most doctors care about the prestige and their own egos.
My favorite part of this is when she can't wrap her head around why Melvin would do something so generous to get something so paltry. But Melvin cares more about keeping his routine consistent than the money required to pay for this doctor. As an autistic person, this makes perfect sense to me, but to a neurotypical person it's madness.
Judging by your writing, you must be super high functioning.
It's a sensitive examination of a case of high functioning ASD. Nicely handled throughout. If you compare it to Rain Man, also a great movie, you can see some of the range that ASD represents and why it's difficult for others to deal with. People on the ASD spectrum neither respond to others, nor do they read others, in ways that are socially understood. Udall has severe OCD and low level Asperger's. This is especially hard for other people because they don't exhibit the obvious signs of disorder. So people just think they're rude, when that's the last thing on their minds.
Melvin cares about her though too. That's also pert of the story.
@@ayokay123 It took years of therapy and my therapist retired before I was done, but I've always had a knack with writing so that compensates for a lot. My main problem is a lack of intuitive thinking so I have to research things because I can't "feel them out" like neurotypicals can and that takes forever when you work full-tme to pay rent.

Jack Nicholson has made a lot of movies, he's best when he is crazy and this is the best, sweetest movie he ever made. And in this scene Harold Ramis is absolutely wonderful. This movie is as good as it gets.

If I recall she was talking about not rejecting the guy funding her son's medical care rather than not rejecting the gift itself, and she said something along the lines of "No.. you don't just throw this one back.". Her mum is worried that her daughter is probably running out of time to be quite so picky especially when the guy is willing to do something this generous and important for her son in return for her simply getting back to her waitressing job.

This scene makes me tear up every time. Her son will be better. Her struggles to get him good medical care have ended. This is truly a great movie with great characters played by great actors. I must watch it again.

That's one the sweetest, funniest rom-coms I've ever seen. It's right up there with Moonstruck but actually is quirkier. Casting Jack Nicholson as the romantic lead, a recluse writer with ASD, was sheer genius.
@Rod Fleming Nicholson and Diane Keating are the main characters in, Somethings Got To Give, another memorable Rom-Com with Jack. Really great movie!

Harold Ramis played this doctor perfectly. Caring for my mom I was lucky enough to meet doctors like this.
We had a Doctor come to our home for my mom, they called him a concierge Doctor, it was incredible, I know it's hard to care for someone, please remember to take time for yourself
@@danaernst922 Thx. My mom passed away in 2011 after a 4 year battle with PSP. It takes something from you caring for someone you love only to watch them fall apart. Something you never can get back.
This scene was filmed 25 years ago, and our healthcare system has not changed.
I can't imagine what kind of crushing debt Carol Connelly is under with all those visits to the ER, the prescription costs and every other kind of financial burden, and all because she has a sick child.
If only Melvin Udall would pay all of our medical bills!
i went to Chicago a couple of year's a go for a short stay i had to see a doctor whilst there the doctor sent me to the hospital due to my heart problem they were so kind to me the nurse got be more blanket's to warm me up i had insurance to cover any medical issues but still i was in a panic they assured me not to worry they gave me muscle relaxant tabs and pain meds at the pharmacy i was a bit shocked at the cost because here in Scotland we dont pay for meds $31 i paid which i thought was very good Thank you to hospital at Devon park area in Chicago Illinois
Oh it has changed alright. We are now the United States of Phizzzzer. A medical system usurped by corporate gov't 100%. All corrupted to the core. Doctors are nothing more than pushers now.

Not to mention, she's living in New York, making a living on a waitress salary. I think today, especially after the pandemic, she wouldn't have made it.

I know we're dealing with a sick daughter and we have to go to children's hospital in Pittsburgh P.A. And they have been so good to us and she's getting better. The relieved so much stress for us.

I know parents that are the last people that should have had any children. And I know people who do not have any kids willing to give their life for ANYONE in need.

@@kazitude1 - dm dm is not wrong. I have no kids and this scene is the only one in the whole movie that makes me tear up. All it takes is empathy for another person to relate. This scene, this whole movie, isn't only for people who have kids or people who are a waitress with a weird customer, etc.
Kudos for casting Harold Ramis in a role, not much more than a cameo, but a role, that allowed him to display some acting chops. He actually could provide drama when he was allowed, but the world wanted what he delivered in Ghostbusters and Stripes...we miss you, Harold.
It's not a Cameo. A Cameo is when an actor is himself in a movie or T.V. show, not a character.
One of, if not, my favorite movie scene of all time! This scene gets my blood pumping, and seeing the confidence in the Doctor just inflates my chest with enthusiasm! If you ever had a loved one that has been suffering through an illness, has been taking to a clinic and hospital throughout their life, without seeing any advancement of health, then you'd know the amount of joy someone receives when a skilled physician reassures you that everything is going to be okay! It feels better than hitting the lottery! ❤
Agree, and this movie has THE most romantic line in the history of movies, where Melvin says to Carol, "You make me want to be a better man!"
That simple phrase imo embodies the true meaning of loving another human being, loving them so much that you want to be the very best person FOR THEM, greatest compliment ever ;?)

Ramis left such a strong impression with every part he played. He was involved in a lot of films that he didn't act in. But each role he played, even when it was just one scene like this, is so unforgettable that it feels like he was in a lot more movies than he was actually. At least it feels that way to me. I love this scene for 3 amazing performances as well as the warmth of the moment - your son doesn't have to live like this, he isn't going to continue suffering like this. We're going to make sure of it. Love it.

My dad picked my mom up at her dorm at the University of Pittsburgh and took her to the old Showcase Cinema in Murrysville, PA to see this movie and they absolutely loved it
Also, my mom just showed me this movie for the first time on Netflix and I loved it and she told me that the audience cheered when Harold came on screen

The great Harold Ramis was a maginificent actor, director, writer...and humanist. I was saddened by his passing and its the manner. He's now resting in peace.

I had to buy a prescription for an elderly woman a few days ago when I was at the pharmacy. She had no money to pay for it. You see people having to ask for money online all of the time to get medical care. Everyone cheers when this happens. I see church groups that band together to assure needed care is given. We love the generosity and open hearts that do this. It's a beautiful thing to see. But unfortunately what I see is just how bad our healthcare system is that people have to beg or pray/wish for a generous person to come along. For every person fortunate enough to get help, there are hundreds who don't. What about them? What about this kid if they didn't stumble upon their benefactor?
And then when someone like Bernie Sanders says that it's a travesty that citizens of this Country don't get free medical care, he's a communist or socialist. What does that tell you about the greed and indifference that reeks in every pore of the United States, the wealthiest nation in the world.
Be careful Christine, you'll be attacked like I was a few days ago by fox news parrots calling you a communist and a fascist. OF COURSE we should have health care for all but instead we have the republican party protecting billionaires. What's more important, a child or elderly person getting the care they need or Betsy DeVos buying another yacht? She only has about 10. Take care.

Where I come from something "elite" was extra special good! It's just another buzzword repubs toss around to separate people into smaller groups that are easier to destroy. If you mean the VERY RICH you are MOSTLY correct, they don't care. Most just try to lower of eliminate their taxes. There are a few however who have tried to use their wealth for good causes. Shirley Knight gave a wonderful performance as Carol's mother, Beverly. She was my favorite character in the movie.

She's like June Squibb and Edie McClurg: a secret weapon that immediately makes your movie 44% better.
If you like her, I recommend "Indicted: The McMartin Trial." She is amazing and so the entire large cast, in my opinion, in bringing a truly horrible 7-year ordeal for the owner of a the school, her family, and her teachers.

@@reikun86 That is correct. Shirley Knight played the role of the mother of "Jade", Brooke Shields' character in the movie.
Helen is such a beautiful actress that sometimes people forget what a force of nature she can be on screen. It seems the deeper one digs into her characters the more they find. She of course first got my attention on "Mad About You." That show is great as it tends to show how good her comedic timing is but she can also play characters that are pretty deep. If you would like to see see her at her best, acting, casting, directing and the whole ball of wax try watching "And Then She Found Me."
So many great comedic actors, often starting on TV or in stand up, go on to be brilliant dramatic actors.

This is one of the best scenes ever in a movie. Funny. Poignant. With many twists.
This scene makes me tear up. Our family was on a hmo for years, and let me tell you this scene is accurate. Hmo's make you do everything through a primary doctor, and there were times I knew my child needed to go to a specialist, but the primary would not authorize it. Several times I just payed myself for the specialist. Then my oldest was kicked off the insurance when he turned 21, and went without insurance for 2 years. Thank God a law was passed allowing children to stay on till age 26.
Those freakin Democrats pushed this law through to allow children to stay insured until 26. The nerve of them.

Thank the gods that I live in Scotland, with my wife, 2 kids and spouses, and 4 grand kids. I've watched this film a couple of times and this bit chokes me up. I've never had to worry about my family like this poor woman has.

I can’t believe it’s been 24 years since this film came out. Helen Hunt was the perfect actress to cast against Jack Nicholson. I’d forgotten how much i loved this movie. It deserved all the attention it received.
I miss Harold soooo much. He's such a class act.
It’s interesting how someone can turn bitter and hard because of the healthcare system. In the beginning I bet she was light as a feather just trying to find help for her son and trusting the various providers available to her to aid her in that. What changed? Well, when you realize that some of these companies are not in the business of helping you you become tough by force. You document everything because you come to the realization that to some your words mean nothing, some hospitals don’t care and Insurance companies are notoriously evasive.
Am I the only one that got goose bumps when he told her that her son is going to feel much better. Right before she hugged him. This is one of the best movies ever.
I loved Harold Ramis especially and Ghostbusters would ask any of my friends and they will tell you it's my favorite franchise of all time. When he died I went into mourning for a week

I watched You’ve Got Mail again last night. This whole era (late 80s and through to late noughties) was a golden era for Rom Coms. I love Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, Helen Hunt, Tom Hanks etc. Rob Reiner and Penny Marshall... Can't get better dialogue and characters.

Harold Ramis just always exuded this warmth and kindness. Always noticed this.
Every person deserves quality medical attention. Why can't it be this way? Helen Hunt does a great job of portraying a mother run ragged from worrying about her son's frail health condition.
Maybe sometimes because quality medical care might rnf up embarrassing the in-laws and the co-workers too much or whatever?
"Your son is going to feel a great deal better". What better words can a parent hear when they have a sick child and no way to help?
This movie was for me an insight on the American health system. In Europe even a poor unemployed person has the right to the same treatments of the rich man. Of course we have private clinics and what’s not but normally the public health is with very high standards.
Sadly we haven’t made much progress
And for some reason there's a lot of dumbasses here who are desperate to keep this broken system. Because freedumb!
As I understand it, that's true for general care... but people with more serious health problems tend to complain a lot-- such as having to wait months for medical procedures. If rich people aren't getting better treatment at private clinics, why would they exist, and why would anyone go to them?
@@positivelysimful1283 you've identified it --- speed --- in the US you can get a 'concierge doctor' - with special phone access & you'd be amazed how the system is just so much faster ... or probably you wouldn't be ...... having a Dr 'on call' is the province of being able to pay for it .... everywhere.

HELEN HUNT is one of my favorite actresses of all time - I love her, she’s so good!! Everything she’s been in I’ve really enjoyed very much.

Helen Hunt was so good in this. The film is great, even if a bit difficult to believe. I had forgotten Harold Ramis was the doctor.
