Being a musician and raising two musician children may we apologize if a classic piano teacher damaged your spirit in any way. We are not all alike and want you to love Knowing in a different way. I'll share my experience. I had a favorite third grade teacher who I considered beautiful and generous with compliments. She made me feel special and seen. Unique even. She wore two fragrances: Knowing and Magi Noir. It was the early 80's and the perfectly dressed and polished loving teacher blessed me with her kindness and her fragrance each day my third grade year.
Hi there! She definitely wasn’t successful in damaging my spirit. I changed teachers and went to music school for 6 more years. I still play. That’s incredible, the fact that your teacher also wore Knowing! I also love that no matter how different our experiences, we both ended up loving the same fragrance. Thanks so much for sharing!🙂
LOVED this! "Sneakily wise.." I loved it when it came out, and I wore it for years although I was only 18. And I loved original Dune, too. Now I guess people call these "scary," but I never thought so at the time. They just smelled really good and made me feel grown up. I don't remember ANYTHING animalic about it. Not with Paloma Picasso, either. I guess that's because it was so common at the time? It's tough when you have a negative association with a fragrance you love. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with your piano teacher. Chypre is my favourite for work. LOVE oakmoss, and I think that's part of what I like about it. (Or likED, because I don't remember this being at all challenging, but I guess it must have been. I guess I was just weird.) I love the story of the flower (I shan't try the spelling of it!) by which Mrs. Lauder was beguiled. Thanks for the research and thought and time and effort you put into this. I love to listen to your voice. xo
Hi there! I always look forward to seeing your comment!🙂🧡 My mum agrees with you. She says Dune and Knowing were considered light when they were released. You were used to Poison, Giorgio, Youth Dew and the likes. Chypres are empowering, aren’t they? You definitely strike me as the type of person who can pull off a chypre anytime! I’m not surprised that you love oakmoss so much. I also love chypres and oakmoss but I also love my vanillas, my white florals, ambers… Thank you so much for your kind words!🙂🧡
I think I've only tried the legacy version of this. Not the original. Definitely a classic big chypre! I was quite surprised that Estée Lauder relaunched the fragrances that they did! I guess it was a celebration! 🎉
It’s definitely an amazing chypre. They still sell the original in this bottle but the Legacy line is also available. It came out at the beginning of this year I believe. It costs £250 per bottle so it’s not something I’ll ever buy. It’s nice when brands still advertise their classics; so many brands just act like they don’t exist and then quietly discontinue them at some point. Thanks for watching, Claire!🙂
@@lukeparfumsYep, I didn't realise how expensive it was until your video! I was shocked!!! 😮 I didn't see the price in store... But I guess Frederic Malle was involved in directing so needs paying (he wasn't the perfumer I don't think). To me, it still had a lot of clout, but yep not tried the original so I don't know!
I think you’re right. I misspoke in the video. He was the creative director. I think Legacy is just a slightly modernised version of Knowing. I only hope they don’t discontinue the original. Not that I’ll need another bottle anytime soon… 75ml will last me a lifetime.
Does this also happen to you? No matter how much I prepare for a video, I always end up making one or two mistakes that could have been avoided. Ah, well.
I just bought a bottle of Knowing from a person who wasn’t sure if it was vintage or not because there was no box or sticker. So I bought it for a very reasonable price. It does look kind of old and dark. I bought it mostly for the memories. 😊❤❤
What a beautiful and complete review! I never wore the Lauder perfumes but I have started recently. I realised I propably should get the ones that most appeal to me before these original and particular beauties are gone (just in case the new legacy scents should be meant to replace them). The first one I got is Estee. I will be purchasing Beautiful and Private Collection at some point.
Thank you! I agree with you. Now is the time to get any of the EL classics. So many have already been discontinued - Intuition, Tuscany, Beyond Paradise. Who knows how long the rest of them will still be around. I don’t really care for Beautiful (though it’s a strong like) but I do love Cinnabar, Youth Dew, SpellBound, Sensuous, Knowing and Tuscany. I’m kicking myself for not picking up a new bottle of Tuscany when it was still available. It disappeared about a year ago. And Estée, of course, how could I forget that one. Thanks for watching!🙂
@@lukeparfums I know the feeling too well when one has not gotten that backup bottle..... I got Estee after watching your video about it, only realising then that it is an aldehydic floral chypre(and powdery), which is one of my favourite genres 😊
Hi Luke! I see i have some catching up to do on your channel 😁. I love Knowing so much but i adore old school chypres. I'm sorry you have a 'bad' scent memory with Knowing. I wonder if you would like her more if you didnt have the piano teacher memory, because this is one of the least dry Chypres i own. I think you would be choked out if you smelled Jean Louis Sherrer Edt 😂😂😂. To my nose Knowing smells like Paloma Picasso and Diva's baby or something. What a lovely review Luke, so happy to be here!
Hi there! I agree that Knowing is definitely among the milder oldschool chypres in comparison to Caborchard or something equally potent. I’ve know about Knowing for years and it always smelt dark, let’s say pitch black, to me, perhaps because of the piano teacher association. But I’m really enjoying it now. Every time I wear it I discover something different. There’s so many interesting nuances to it: the rose, the mimosa, a honey-like sweetness. I’m not sure if I tried it, I think I did a long time ago, but I don’t think JLS would be for me; it’s probably a little too green for my taste. I like green but in moderation. I absolutely agree that Knowing is similar to Paloma Picasso but only once the strong aromatic and animalic opening of PP dissipates. Now that I have both, I think Knowing might be my favourite. Thank you so much for your insights!🙂🧡
@@singerstylistjennifer1654 wow skin and noses are so different i dont pick up a leather note in either if them. Heavy leather is note i dont prefer either so i can understand.
As a man, this is probably the most feminine scent that I wear. I use it frequently before bed, but I'll also put it on mornings when I feel sluggish or depressed. The rosy, soapy bomb of an opening kicks me in the butt and gets me in gear.
What an excellent video! Youve answered so many questions I had about Knowing. Namely, whether it was "unisex" by todays standards. Just great! Subscribed😊
Hi Lovely! This perfume has been on my mind to purchase again for weeks now. Which brings me to say I really loved this video..✨ Such opulance indeed 💕
Thank you for your video, it was so interesting! I didn't know that the white flowers of difficult name are known as 'tobira(means door)' in Japan. Some region in Japan had this plants and herring hanging at the door for amulet in February. Of course I didn't know this truth until now😆Now I really want to smell 'Knowing' !
I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed the video. That’s so interesting! I had no idea that pittosporum is referred to as tobira in Japan. Thanks for sharing. You learn something new every day.🙂☀️
What an amazing video! What are your top 8 favorites of all-time for each season? I think mine are Givenchy Organza, Givenchy Indecence, Dior Dune, Armani Code, Gucci Bloom, Gucci Flora Jasmine. Gardenia, Hugo Boss( my middle son got for me), Dolce and Gabbana, and Anais Anais. Plus an inexpensive one- Jungle Gardenia. I love woody! I crave woody and mysterious- one that takes a person time traveling far far away. I’ve never tried Estee Lauder perfumes. Sounds enchanting. I wish there were perfume testings like there are wine tastings. When I lived in Las Vegas we had everything but in the southeast the stores are fairly bare and we don’t have many perfumes to try. I love your review of this!
Well now I have both. I found an ebay-er that sold me a true vintage bottle of Knowing. I bought two boxes sealed. Unlike the current iteration the ingredients on the box are quite different. After checking batch numbers i determined the older one to be from 2018, It lists oakmoss and treemoss. The box from 2023 does not. (The version I use most days is the updated formula as well.) How does it smell? Wow. Call me crazy but the 2018 smells like cigarettes. Its way dirtier than the cleaner modern version. Maybe I'm just used to it but I think I prefer the updated version so I guess I'm not very sophisticated. lol. Now I understand the "animalic" note. Can"t say I"m a fan...yet. I"m going to keep spraying every now and then to get a sense of it. It is my first vintage perfume. I think I may have to get more!
Thank you for sharing your experience with different formulations of Knowing. I can’t believe it’s that dirty! Mine is a dry, rosy chypre. You chose an amazing first vintage perfume; there are so many more to explore. 🙂

Hey there! Cinéma is gorgeous! Rich, creamy, vanillic… I used up a big bottle about 2-3 years ago. The bottle was significantly older though. I loved it so much that I repurchased it and it just wasn’t the same anymore. I was so sad that I returned it. How does yours perform?
@@lukeparfums Yes it has been reformulated unfortunately. it smells practically the same but it’s not as strong as it used to be. I have the reformulated version and it lasts a few hours in my skin but I I also spray it on my clothes for lasting power. I do wish they’d stop with their annoying reformulations of classic fragrances.
What a shame. I rarely complain about reformulations but in this case it was so obvious. I had the same experience except that mine had literally no projection and lasted a good 4 hours. The liquid was pale yellow. The vintage one was really potent.
Oh this introduction im dying for this. 😮❤
