Thanks Steve . These are great. I’ve listened to every Eddie interview. With Alex you can tell he’s smart and observes what goes on and you get a super honest down to earth perspective of what was going on
Alex was ASTUTE wasn’t he ? …And he saw through Roth’s pretentiousness and hypocrisies didn’t he ? I was falling off my chair with laughter when he was doing the ‘slow South American’ talk in ENGLISH to show us what DLR sounded like to South American audiences….lol ….Roth was later cruel to Edward trying to even call him ‘culturally illiterate’ but Alex would have showed this arrogant superiority posture by Roth as the utter hypocritical fake that it was…Ed was a sensitive creative artist being bullied and restricted by a fame chaser with a ‘superiority complex’ and I would have trusted a down to Earth soul like ED more than a calculator like Roth…Nobody can deny that DLR was one of the best frontmen Rock ever had who worked hard to help VH succeed…But for DLR to call Ed ‘culturally illiterate’ is to assume Roth was culturally ‘literate’ when he wasn’t ….With his lines like - ‘don’t stick your tongue out at me unless you’re gonna use it’ and ‘honey ,you’re so sweet I bet you sh*t sugar’ Roth would have been as welcome among the culturally literate as a TURD in a SWIMMING POOL 🙄🙄😳
Alex is greatest older brother. I’ve listened to every Eddie interview. Alex always let Eddie do 99percent of the talking. Just backed him up. But he is extremely astute listened and watch things going on . He was very fair. Knowing people have quirks but that s the cost of greatness let them slide
@@godbyone In many ways Alex was the 'unsung hero' in VH because he could not only be the intelligent voice of sanity in the camp but he always looked out for his younger brother in ways that the money makers & fame chasers didn't. Their ultimate motive was MONEY but with ALEX his motive was LOVE & concern for the well being of Edward.
@@godbyone Alex's memoir coming out this year in October is going to be the BEST biography on Edward ever written or ever will be written because none of the others could ever have been as close to Edward & for as long. If I was an interviewer I know what I would have loved to have asked Alex (with me being a lifelong guitar player myself). I would love to ask him - 'Alex, did your brother ever talk to you about what made him decide to break the rules & conventions dictating how the guitar was played ? ...Was it a reaction against the rigid rule methods forced on him earlier when he was made to practice piano ? ....Was there a private moment where he said to you - 'Bruv, I HATED all the dogmatic rules those ramrod backed piano teachers tried to impose on us..... & we weren't even self motivated to play piano....If I pick up my OWN instrument (guitar) & I just LOVE to play it, love to work out all those Clapton solos from Pops 16rpm turntable then I NEVER want to do it by the absolutist RULES the way they tried to force it on us with Piano........Im going to play the instrument I LOVE my OWN way. Not theirs'.....On how Ed became this fantastic rule breaking innovator I believe ALEX is the THE GUY WHO WOULD HAVE THE ANSWERS. In one interview I remember Alex saying - 'Ed has this UNIQUE approach to the instrument' ....And when I heard that I remember thinking 'ALEX knows......He KNOWS' ....Alex was the SAME in a way....In this Jas Obrecht taped interview Ed was describing how Alex BUILT his OWN DRUMKITS in the way Ed would assemble his own guitars.
@@godbyone You know something else I wish I could ask Alex (& maybe he goes into this stuff in his upcoming book) ...Edward LOVED to try new things on the guitar & make it do things other players weren't . Ed was capable of taking that creative INITIATIVE ...& this wasn't by purchasing 'technology' but by breaking the rules dictating how the instrument was played. The one thing that he strived for in himself as a player was ORIGINALITY. And he also respected it in OTHER players. Those others who would make him say - 'God, how did this player do that' ?? .....The one player who really impressed Edward was ALLAN HOLDSWORTH.....& he even tried to help him in his career. Allan originally wanted an instrument he could blow into (like a saxophone) but got 'stuck' with the guitar (a plucking & tapping instrument) but Allan took the electric guitar and he found ways to make it SOUND LIKE an instrument you blow on like a sax....By making the attack of his pick invisible, arpeggiating notes with individual fingers (not pull offs to the side) and avoiding blues string bending because blowing instruments didn't do that..... Now I know Alex wasn't into all that progressive rock stuff like Ed was but what I would have loved to ask Alex was this - Was there a moment in the family where Edward said to his Father Jas - 'DAD , LISTEN TO THIS GUITARIST ALLAN HOLDSWORTH. HE HAS FOUND A WAY TO MAKE MY INSTRUMENT (guitar) SOUND LIKE YOUR INSTRUMENT ! (saxophone) ...I wonder what as a JAZZ Saxophonist JAS thought about ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ? That would have been fascinating.

Thanks Steve for this amazing content; Alex’s stories are incredibly interesting; he (and Eddie) have the epitome of the American-dream story… I admire how hard they worked (and also everything their father did too).
This stuff is just so engaging. The history, the stories, the detail, all so wonderful. We love these guys like family, and hearing their story of becoming is wonderful because it's all so relatable from a family perspective. Getting all of this from Al himself makes me love these guys all the more. They truly are as Eddie always said, "Just a regular guy who plays guitar." And, that makes them that much cooler. Thank you, Steve. And, Thank you, Alex! This all makes Van Halen that much better.

Wasn’t it great to hear Alex talk about his DAD ? ….Clearly his Father Jan could use his instrument to set people’s emotions free and let their hair down and forget their worries and troubles. And just imagine how good and important that would have been in WW2 when you remember what people were going through. I think the reason that ALEX became more extrovert than ED was because Alex spent more time with their Father in professional situations and Jan taught Alex to let it all out whereas Edward was more quiet and introverted creatively expressing his emotions through his instrument on his own….It sounds like Alex got his ‘wildness’ about life and his crazy humour from his DAD😊.

This is great stuff! But towards the end, it seems like both Alex and Steve are talking about the 4th album but they're discussing Diver Down. What happened to Fair Warning?? LoL. I don't get Al's hate for Van Halen II or VH 1, those records are incredible!

Alex possibly mixed up Diver Down as being the 4th album when it was the 5th but he's entitled to do that because he PLAYED on ALL the albums....lol....The Broomstick trick was from the Sammy Hagar book I think ? ......Sammy shouldn't have written that chapter titled- 'Crazy Ed' ..That was a big horrible mistake....I think Sammy actually DOES regret writing that chapter now. He has said as much in recent interviews.... It caused a lot of damage between him & Alex........Actually I remember Alex talking about doing crazier things than the broomstick in interviews in the 1980s....But I better not repeat them....lol 🤭🤫🤫🤫🥴

On the Van Halen 2 album (released in early 1979) I think I remember in one interview ED actually claimed that he remembered during its production there was a lot of Coke being exchanged across the mixing board & it wasn't necessarily the BANDS either. What I remember months after I bought it later in the Summer of 1979 I went up to London to see VH as headliners in the UK at The Rainbow Theater. & I immediately noticed (even as just a 16 yr old) that LIVE Alex's DRUMS sounded TEN TIMES more powerful than they sounded on the First 2 VH studio album.....They captured Ed's live GUITAR sound on those two early recordings but they DIDN'T capture Alex's LIVE DRUM sound on them. Plus Ed's solo on the VH2 studio version of 'Somebody Get Me a Doctor' was very truncated whereas on bootlegs of it before VH 1 at the Pasadena Civic in 1977 the solo Ed played on it was just WILD...& I actually preferred the different INTRO they used to do on it back then.

Steve, is there a reason you didnt correct Alex on the order of the albums and also skipping Fair Warning completely? I found it odd that he completely forgot about an entire album in their catalog given the fact that his overall memory of the early days is strong.

Alex loved the Mick Jagger and Bowie version of Dancing In The Streets!! What???? It sucked. Van Halen did a great version. They Vanhalenized it and made it a cooler song. Alex was a little confused.

Yes and no. Yes better sound but this is only time I’ve ever heard Alex talk to freely. If in studio. And other guys were in background even other side Alex might not have talks so much
@@godbyone Was there an airport near the place where Steven was interviewing Alex ? ......Was it at the Coldwater Canyon house in LA ,,,,On the hills ? ....There might have been a lot of air traffic coming in & out.....No wonder Alex was using metaphors of The CONCORD .
Shame Ed and Al's family members were not supportive but quite jealous of their talents .My father is the same no support ever and still in his 80's seething jealous of me and my younger brother because we can write songs( on my other channel not this one) LOL.

Around the 31 minute mark, Alex making fun of Dave’s speaking other languages definitely misses the point. Alex can’t see how these fans will go crazy just for him trying as a big blonde haired Tarzan. These fans hearing this rock star trying to speak their language is enough. However I have heard him speak Spanish and try to speak Japanese and Portuguese and yea, he’s not that good. But he tries. The Van Halen brothers have a unique perspective because they are bilingual by force 😂
You can definitely tell these interviews are just after the breakup, since he never calls Dave by his first name and you can hear the bitterness. Truth is the crowds went nuts when Dave spoke in their language in South America. I would say most of the fans respected the effort.
