I have been talking to and writing about the greatest musicians on the planet for over 47 years. I’ve done stories for Guitar Player, Guitar World, Rolling Stone, Playboy, Classic Rock and a ton of others. Along the way, I’ve written several books on Edward Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Black Sabbath, Free/Bad Company, Randy Rhoads and others.
I’ve met many of my heroes including Brian Wilson, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Randy California, Jimmy Page and hundreds of other gifted musicians.

Mr Jack Bruce in Led Zeppelin!! Would of been cool!!! Thank you for sharing
Roth got his stuff from the singer of black oak Arkansas Jim dandy watch and you will see good view nudge met you in 72 are 69 veterans auditorium and again you staying at a friend's house in Des Moines Iowa at east high school girl named Kathy
Johns style always had the perfect balance between flashy and subtle. His riffing is laid back, but his lead guitar playing (especially) live are right up there with Hendrix, Clapton, page etc.
There’s absolutely nothing more amazing than the original Van Halen with Diamond 💎 Dave. His solo efforts were really good, and he really must have been listening to some ass kissing people to leave the band after everything they had tried to achieve, He walked. After 1998, we lost almost 20 years from nothing worthwhile from Ed until 2012 and a dang shame they never got to do that second album after “A Different Kind Of Truth”.
Ken Deane met Elvis Presley? Now, I’d be interested to hear that story!!!
Thanks Steve, This is just Gold!!! 😊
Wow this is soooooo important especially Sammy and Mick Jones part! Wow! So interesting and intricate this time frame. EVH comes alive! Removing DLR was difficult...funny Ted T was there in the rehearsals. They did work with him later...Crazy From the Heat thing lol so much more diplomatic in his answers. 5150 is an entity in itself and its own world. Musician vs star is huge point. So young and clear minded...vulnerability. I maintain that 5150 was supposed to be with different vocalists. I eventually think he would of settled with like Eric Martin to road test the songs...in his creative mind that Patty Smythe like voice was what he was looking for...again my opinion.
Good interview. Listening to Dave is like listening to a dizzy blonde California girl talk.
This is a classic example of the career suicide that certain artists like Jeff committed. Yes, you had an art form that wasn't conducive to commercial success...but to turn your limited access over to idiots like this not only didn't help the cause it set you back decades. This is sad beyond belief.
Your goofy laughter & giggling throughout the interview is odd. I guess it was the weed in the day. That said this is absolutely an archival interview and how you got it I'll never know. My plan is to have it digitally enhanced with as much as your stupidity edited out as possible. Thanks for posting this as weird as your contribution to it is.
I'd like to know more about their time with Monk. I read Monk's book, and it sounded like they always got along, and I feel Monk helped them out of bad financial situations.
Great interviews Steve.
Thank you for this upload, very grateful. I Miss You Uncle Ron ❤❤
Alex and Ed sound very similar when they speak.
USS Ryndam.
This is a very different Al and his feelings towards Roth than what he just released in his book Brothers, very different.
Steve, are you related to the actor Walter Brennan, looks like he could be your Dad. On another note, loved your VH book, I've read it twice so far and will read it again. Wish that you did an audio book on it. Maybe you could do that for Nealonious' bio.
thx for sharing bro
thx for sharing bro
The cat can play, but he sounds as dumb as a bag of hammers..............
Thick East Coast accent.
Date of interview? EDIT -- Sounds about January 1979. New drummer (Steve Smith). New album (Evolution) released in March 1979. Japan Tour in April. Neal says he's 24 but doesn't say he'll be 25 in February, so it could be December 1978...
Neal said he was twenty four here so this must be around 1978. Superstardom was right around the corner for him.
Great interview. I was looking for it for some time and I finally found it. Thanks a lot for uploading. Cheers from Poland
Thank You for sharing this! Love Neal’s playing. One of the Greatest to ever strap on an Guitar….And he’s still Great!👍🎸
Thank you, Mr. Rosen. Schon is such an under appreciated guitar player these days.
Awesome!
I love how he gets the people in the room worked up and laughing and he kind of snickers ...heh heh heh
26:19 classic Ozzy riffing !!! 😂 "There's so many people who think 'sniff this, shove this up your asshole, and drink that and I'm cool man' ….that's insane!"
Thank you! Absolute gold for EVH fans. Incredible insight into his approach to writing and recording so early on.
I dono about Michael Anthony but yeah Dave evh and avh were all tens I love Alex drumming
WOW!!! This is AWESOME Steve! Thank you so much for sharing all of these historical interviews with the world! 🤘
Can’t wait! Thanks Steve! Great way to celebrate the new year and Ed’s birthday!

Happy New Year Steve ! Have you think about doing an interview/video with Alex Van Halen now to talk about all of those subjects ?

Awesome!
time machine!! thanks for sharing
subscribe or listen to classical music >< J
Excellent, thanks!
Nice interview. Carl seems very cordial. Sad that Dennis would be gone in a couple of years. I saw the "Keeping The Summer Alive" tour in 1980. Great concert!
Carl was cordial if a bit distant. One of the greatest voices ever. "God Only Knows." What else needs to be said?
Incredible. This is really special to me. I spent quite a bit of time with Carl in 1983 when I was 11 years old and living with my mom in Santa Monica. Long story short, they belonged to the same cult and they got paired together in “workshops” often. We were very poor at the time. My mom was living on unemployment checks and couldn’t afford a babysitter when she would go to cult meetings and functions at their offices on Wilshire at the end of the block where we lived. He would watch me while my mom was busy and he was a very gentle and kind man. My mother got to know him very well and she told me how sad he was, basically because of his abusive father and self-esteem issues revolving around his weight. But he was very kind and playful with me. I had just barely gotten serious on guitar at that time, but we never talked about music. He basically entertained me and played frisbee with me and stuff like that. I really didn’t know who he was at the time to be honest. I knew of The Beach Boys, but I had absolutely no idea that he was in the group. It wasn’t until a few years later that I learned who he was and of his famous lead vocals like “God Only Knows” and “Good Vibrations”. Thanks for bringing me back to an unusual time in my childhood!
Amazing story.
@@SteveRosenInterviews Anything can happen in L.A. as you well know!
Any chance of posting your Roger Fisher interview from 1979? Any Heart stuff would be appreciated!
I may get around to that someday. Thanks for the interest.
Thanks for this. I'm a huge Arthur fan and didn't even know this interview existed.
I couldn’t imagine having EVH hang’n in my living room playing guitar
Concepts of a plan hmmmm😂🎉
Wow you just popped up on my thread. How kool . Thank you. Happy changos🎉
