- The Dave Mustaine Signature Thrash Factor humbucker recreates the unique tone of Dave’s favorite JB, used to record some of his most iconic albums.
In 1990 Megadeth released their landmark fourth album, “Rust In Peace”. Widely regarded as one of the most iconic and influential metal albums of all time, its breakneck rhythms, intricate arrangements, shifting time signatures, and blazing dual lead guitar lines showcased the band’s mastery of their craft.
During the recording of the album Dave relied heavily on one guitar in particular, loaded with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and 59 model in the neck. According to Dave, that JB had a tone that that was different from an ‘off-the-shelf’ JB - and had become part of his signature sound.
We worked closely with Dave to recreate the tone and feel of his favorite JB, ultimately altering the winding process in order to achieve the tone he was looking for - compared to the standard JB model, the Thrash Factor’s low end is tighter, the mids are slightly scooped, and the highs are more aggressive.
The Dave Mustaine Signature Thrash Factor is hand built in Santa Barbara, California.

Its kinda cool that he still has his Jackson King V after so many years especially after how much he promotes his dean guitars
It's the only one he's got left I think. I know of a guy who has the black jackson he used on the So Far So Good, So What? Album. The one featured in this video was originally Black with the Megadeth 3d-logo on the upper "wing", you can see him play it live a lot around 1990-1991.
Dave wanted to buy jackson but they refused and it went to Fender.
The silver one is the black one used in SFSGSW and peace sells, he just had it painted silver, that guitar he calls his number one is the only one he has left i believe but he has had copies of the black guitar and the silver one made as backups when he was touring.
Julio Herrera the silver one and the black one in the holy wars video are two diff guitars
Number One King V is not the only he has. He also has another silver King V that had more recognition during live shows and official videos. As for the story of Number One - it's a bit blurred. He had different Black Vs with "Megadeth" logo so it's hard to say wich particular became Number One later.
Man, I love Mustaines tone his livewires were megadeth in a pup, just fantastic.
Kinda liked the original name Passive Aggressors when they debuted his new Dean that came with them during last winter NAMM, had they not already been a name for some Chapman pickups so they're now Thrash Factor
Someone needs to do a comparison against a standard JB. I'm a fan of the JB, but I do wish the lows were a bit tighter and the highs a bit crunchier.
charvelgtrs: Try an SH-6!
Listen to Deftones's 2nd album Around the Fur. Even if you don't like the music, pay attention to the title track guitar tone. That was an alder body ESP with a JB in C#. It's tight. Maybe all you need is an EQ pedal in the front of your amp for what you're trying to do.

Someone did: ua-cam.com/video/q1QWmGXbb3Y/v-deo.html
I'm very interested to hear these demoed along side a JB and the JB antiquity. It shouldn't a world of difference between the pickups, really. The formula from the original hasn't changed very much. However, perhaps they are taking into consideration the sound of the record and the post production used on the guitars. I'm sure the guitar tracks went through additional eqing in the studio. If you are going that route, it could be a very interesting pickup.
Hmm, the audio of the live performance isn't really that good or is it just me? The guitars sound nothing like RIP and is that how the riff for HW actually goes?
Keep in mind the audio was captured as a stereo recording from a live show, so it would be really difficult to have it sound just like the original record where every instrument was recorded separately, mixed and mastered.
Yeah I am very familiar with how a studio works v's a show but DM has always been as tight on stage as he is on record but this is perhaps not quite up to his usual god tier standard. I ear monitors, drum triggers, digital desks and off stage iso cabs etc all suck for megadeth but they use all that shit now.
drum triggers?
It's tuned to D-Standard now (the guitars), Dave Can't sing in Eb let alone concert pitch (A440).
In the live video he is still using his live wires.. you can see the covers clearly on the..the live clip may have just been there to hype the video up as well
man ,i miss my grandma...
Relateable.
Daves the badesst dude in rock
He look gold in his aged.
When he Dave Mustaine is talking, he looks so tired. I worry about that. But when he is playing, he still looks so cool! Then I understood that tone is very important for him.(Actually I’ve felt that.)
1:10 I can’t not look at it, it’s too beautiful...
Nice guitar, it originally used to be black with the Megadeth 3d-logo on the upper wing. I might have to get these for my Jackson Rhoads.
In most scenes he has the other pair of pickups from Duncan, the Livewire
I can tell you something, Best bands in Metal have awesome killers tones.
I might need to check these out I do like the JB I got them in two of my guitars. To the crew at Seymour Duncan. Stay safe up there I noticed the fires are getting ugly that way. We got hit hard in Ventura last week and it tears me up to see it moving so fast again. Stay safe
I am wondering if the JB that was in that jackson had a ceramic magnet swap in place of the Alnico 5 they come with stock? That would make it tighter and have a thrashier tone.
Which would be the SH-6 Duncan Distortion.
@@mercatorjubio3804 Close but not 100% the same. I have test distortion with alnico 5 and jb with ceramic and those didn't sound fully like actual models.
So, can we get a demo with a clean amp? Neck and bridge. Chorus, reverb, and delay. Most any pickup can be dialed in for metal.
Now go back to jackson guitars.
LAYUCHEBI would be awesome but his Dean VMNT are super nice, I own the Korina V. Great guitar.
I remember about dave has some problem with jackson contract legal between his hand broke in 2002 it's made his losting signature of jackson now.
@@LeonRHarvey he had actually offered to buy the company before they were bought out by Fender, but Fender made a better offer and swallowed them up. The problem was that they were going out of business and could only deliver like 1 guitar while they were transitioning to new ownership. Alexi Laiho left Jackson for ESP at the same time as Dave did. It had nothing to do with a personality conflict, it was that Jackson guitars wasn't really a company anymore and lots of artists still needed guitars.
Jackson needs to go back to Japan absolute junk these days
@@bc454irocz89 well they did recently.
I read years ago in guitar world that Jackson wasn't following through as in giving Dave a few new models a year...so that's why he went with dean...but in the article Dave said he'll always love Jackson guitars.....Jackson guitars rule!
He went to ESP before Dean. His ESP model was a lot better than his Deans.
No, he was with ESP. ESP did him dirty during Gigantour and he left them. He was going to resign with Jackson. Jackson were going to give him a good deal and give him the entire King V line. But then Dean approached him and gave him an outrageous deal that he couldn't say no to.
Wow I want a set of those so bad.
Dave looks so Dusk till Dawn
so how tight is it? the description makes it sound like it is a SH6
Swap the alnico 5 in the JB for a ceramic, perfect thrash tone! super tight
Fucking big bright orange Boss DS-1 is how me and my friends discovered distortion...
You could get such a Kill Em All / Peace Sells sound out of it even with a crap guitar...
We will have to hear them on a demo....Preferably an A/B with the SH4.
My axe Thrash Factor/Sentient combo \m/
dave mustaine rocks💪🏻🎶🎸
I think this can perfect my tone with a Screamin Demon neck.
I was thinking the same thing!
I love holy wars but i hate that they start on the up beat...drives me nuts
hahahahahaha i feel you
I'd love to know what Dave used for Peace sells and So Far So Good So What, I'm guessing a jcm 800, maybe his old bich. But did he use a od in front or not? Really interesting.
Foghornish For Peace Sells, Dave used Bill Lawrence L500XL Pickups, JCM 800 amp, and BC Rich Bich guitar which has a Neal Poser preamp on it. On SFSGSW, he used the King V Jackson with JBs, and a Rockman Sustainor (Boston preamp) in front of a JCM 800.
Knowledge is wisdom.
God bless you. \m/ (--_-) \m/
@@grcerva He had the JB in the bridge on Peace Sells, so probably not the L-500XL, but rather the L-500R or L-500L in the neck.
@@grcerva dave didn’t use the jb until rust in peace. His pickups in the king v were just stock Jackson pickups that looked like emgs but were similar to a jb tone wise
These things have been out for like a month and still no demo
Can it be cool for lower tuning too or you
recomend keeping around ceramics magnet pickups ? (Nazgul, Black Winter, Sh-6, sh-5 ect) thanks!
Pat Delisle I mean he's playing in D standard here. They are designed with a lower tuning in mind.
IT IS a JB, with a different twist on the winding process to sound more agressive on the low end.. wich is what you want to play high gain rythm guitar palm mute ect.. :D Wich, is, really cool i think.
The Black Winter definitely if you are going C standard or less...
This Thrash Factors are designed with D Standard and E Standard in mind
Damn, he baked af.
Exhausted from battling Lyme Disease, most likely.
Tired would be a more suitable guess, perhaps?
lmfo his wasted af :DD
I got the live wires on my VMNT these are hot active pickups that have a nice clean sound but i definitely prefer passive pickups for their richer sound, i think i will replace the actives by these thrash factor
Finally!
F I N A L L L Y !!!
Finally Dave has dropped the active crap!
Let the sound breathe, let the wood vibrate, let the dynamics be expressed, let your hands shape the sound, not a battery and a circuit!
I use both passive and active pick-ups daily, so I know what I am speaking of.
Calm down kid.
You don’t know shit.
I want the trash factor!
I think gary holt used a SD custom. Id def want to hear a comparison of this and a standard jb which a lot of people say sucks
DO NOT TOUCH! DO NOT EVEN LOOK AT ME! oh dave
i love the livewires, the thrash factors? not so much. Just being real!
I wonder if the guitar sample here it's from a upcoming Live CD/BD, because it's sounds so much tighter tone-wise, than the CTE LIVE (2013). That album was so poorly mixed man, which is a shame cuz I saw them twice on that anniversary tour and they sounded awesome.
I hope Jackson will include them in their current KVs lol
Que buen sonido :-)
Interesting.
My luthier loved these pickups, they are not one trick phony’s
I guess im one of those dudes that doesn't care too much about artist pickups or guitars. I believe it's in the hands of the maestro
Are these available for individual sale?
OK Am I the only one here that is wondering exactly what the difference is between this pickup set and a regular old, tried and true JB / Jazz set?? I can get "that tone" with any combination of pickups and other equipment.....
HIs tone used to be great live, now it sounds like he use cheap equipment.
spoiler: there's almost no difference at all between the JB and the thrash factors lol
1:01 do not touch. do not even look at it
Is that tone in the video desirable at all?
soooooo... They are JBs with Daves Signature???
Knuschberkeks almost. Read the video description
Is this just a JB with Dave's name on it?
Active or passive pickups?
Syahjohn Sy passive bro
fact that hes a man of God makes even more badass
Makes him kinda dumb. Science bruv.
Fuck all you atheists
Guarantee he doesn't believe in astronomy, because zombie jesus and stuff. Don't tell the holy ghost though, he might throw an ark at me.
Spoken like a true Christian.
Its also in a DC comic.
The fact that they didn't take apart and analyze his original to figure out the difference tells me it was a stock JB.
i thought he used trembuckers in the 80s
Endgame was the best megadeth sound, countdown was next
maleman julpax rust in peace
united abominations though
Youthanasia! Best Megadeth sound. VHT amps
Wow Dave looks rough.
Did he just downtuned his guitar?🤔
Megadeth is in D tuning now for many years , cuz of Dave's lost vocals . He had surgery from all that headbanging!
yea livewires rock, these? not so much
I love Dave and Megadeth But hate how they have to downtune live. I get it, but it doesn't hit the same
It was an 'off the shelf' JB. it was the wood of that guitar that made it sound the way it did. also maybe the pots in there too.
Buy JB, More cheap than this pickup.. case closed
jakson 1936 obviously your no badass so dont speak on what u dont know boy
More like trash factor
Love Dave's playing. ..i don't know if it's the lighting or what, but he looks horrible here. 😕
Dave did not age well...
Not a fan of the artist's signature being right there on the pickup.
Man, he looks old.
