For FE Engine Commonly Forgotten Oil Gally Plug

  • A few years ago an engine builder pointed out to me that there is an oil gally plug that sometimes gets over looked when reassembling the Ford FE engine. They take the plugs out for cleaning and then forget to reinstall one particular plug resulting in oil pressure loss on the freshly rebuilt engine. Here I show where that particular plug is located at. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you car gods for this video, i got my block all ready and installed in my truck. Was ready to fire my 390 up and found the oil gallery plug in the bag of old parts from the machine shop, I got a little worried and had trouble finding a good diagram of the core plug locations, but i found this video. The machine shop failed to install the plug.... but they sure did remove it for me. I was this close to killing a brand new motor, crap that was close, thank you

    Thank you, Sir.
    You single handledly pointed out the importance of being rebuilt by a dedicated foreign car ( Ford and Chrysler) mechanic & a "generic car (chebbies tree surgeon) -GM-grease monkee.
    I have seen the wreckage of such
    Very expensive. New 390 block,
    And the rest of the new parts.
    The time for the exchanges of 360-to-390 heads, intake, etc. Was incredible! add that to the loss of a period block, destroyed cyl. Heads and so. On.,
    Thanks for the wake up call.
    God bless all,
    Brian.

    Right on dude. My baddest 390 made it about 7 hot laps and seized solid. I payed big money for machine work including all the oil mods. But it is the assemblers responsibility, and I screwed it together. I missed the one behind the cam gear...a simple one, and burned up my bottom end completely. I spun all the mains and rods, it wasted everything block included. I was double stupid because it didn't have the pressure I was expecting, so idiot got to pay for 2 motors that year.

    Depends on the year and distributor gear/oil pump drive housing design, its where the distributor and drive gear gets oil, if you use the wrong distributor per application you bleed off your oil pressure.the housing with the oil groove centered in the dist. bore mating surface that bleeds off below ti the cam gear is for use without the plugged, redirected oil galley. I might be off a little, but Im going by a one time memory from 30 years ago, anyone automotive machine shop savvy have any input here? Don’t make me google I hate putting my mind on the back burner

    I left mine out, but then I had blocked the lifter galleries back aft as I had converted to solid lifters. Hope I didn't make a mistake doing that.

    • @chipwright6193
      @chipwright6193  6 років тому

      The solid lifters will probably get enough oil to be ok, but pressurized oil from the lifter galleries would have been a good thing. There should be enough oil splashing up from the bottom end and also oil laying in the top end to keep them lubricated.

      I didn't see any as a kit on ebay or Summit, but individually they are a common part. They are just a mini freeze plug. I've heard with shortages due to the pandemic that it's hard to find parts for the FE engines. I'm not sure how bad it is. Hopefully as long as you don't have to do anything major like replacing a head, it won't be too bad. I would like to think that getting pistons, rings, bearings, valves, guides etc wouldn't be too bad, I hope...

      My engine runs, but he will have wear inside. Loses oil pressure and after some time due lifter make noises. Also he has a lot of blow by. After almost 60 years I think it's time to overhaul it. But I have help from people who have done FE engines many times. Just looking now what all I need parts. So that it goes later as possible without much waiting ahead.
      I can not say at the moment if the engine has been done before and how due bore of the cylinders are current.

      @chipwright6193  Рік тому

      @@sequoiaohz okay, that sounds similar to mine. I hope it all goes well for you. On mine I just had the heads rebuilt at the local machine shop. The cylinders didn't look too bad, so I just replaced the piston rings. Then replacing all of the bearings and switching to a high volume oil pump got my oil pressure back. Before I rebuilt it, the oil pressure would go to zero at idle when it was hot. I'm really happy with it now. At ide the pressure is around 25psi and 50-75psi on the highway.

      @@chipwright6193 That sounds good to me. Glad your engine is running well again.
      I suspect maybe wear on the main bearings of the crankshaft. There certainly is lost the oil pressure when the engine and the oil is hot. Have heard in the context is also often then at the rear engine seal the engine leaks. There he also loses a lot of oil. Have enough time to do the whole thing over the winter. Then I do not drive anyway, because of all the salt on the roads. Have a good day. Greetings from Germany.

      @@sequoiaohz we don't drive our old cars in the winter either. The salt is terrible. The rear main seal in the 390 was a piece of rope packed in a V groove that sealed against the crankshaft.
