what i love about metal vocals is that there is no wrong sound i always felt bad about my clean singing cause it was so nasally but with metal its about finding all the sounds and just using them intentionally!
You are very talented in vocals, i started doing vocals about a year ago and i kinda got the highs already but i struggled with the lows but now i realized he uses a lot of nasal tone thanks to this video.
Bro I’m the same way I started during March of this year and got highs almost immediately but I’ve always struggled with lows sometimes it would be too breathy or it just wouldn’t be low enough
Awesome series my guy, as some people already said, ur tone is pretty good and it seems like your vocals come out of you pretty effortlessly, would be pretty interesting to see tutorial on your approach to harsh vocals in general.
I agree. Highs feel so much easier and less straining for me. It may be because I have a naturally higher voice for a guy, idk. But lows definitely take a lot more effort and practice
Practice lowering your pitch in your talking voice and hum for vocal warm ups also if you make your lips like a butthole shape it will make the sound lower try adding a tunnel throat technique for a little distortion too
Thierry I don't know if you plan to continue doing vocal teaching videos, but I would love to see more. It is amazing to me how easily to understand Dickie's technique appears to be now. I definetely want to try it and enhance it, as well as CJ's tunnel throat. I have problems with getting false lows. That is the most problematic part I have in my vox. I would be so grateful if you could record a video explaining how to do them properly, how to get into the position and stuff. You rock, dude!
Hey man I fucking love your tutorials. I was wondering if you could go over your base technique because I really love it and want to achieve that similar smooth tone you have when you do your lows and mids. I have a very throaty black metal style tone that isn’t necessarily bad but I want to switch over. If you could give me some advice or maybe do a tutorial on how you build up your screams that would be dope. Keep up the good work!💞
Another interesting little detail about Dickie's dirty, gravel scrape sounding lows is that he uses his hand just under his nose to increase the nasal effect. The space between his thumb and index finger, he presses lightly against his nose to make it more nasally
The best way I have found to reach it is to stretch your entire body, kick back your head and let out a "Aaaaauuuugh." You'd have to play around with figuring out how to activate your false cords, I have no good way to explain that but there's plenty of folks out there with some super helpful videos on that too.
1:26 That's my problem, my distortion sounds nothing like that, it sounds more like a mix between a minecraft zombie and a clearing of the throat lol, whenever I try to get that kind of distortion, it hurts a little bit, and my throat feels sore
I know exactly what you mean! And it could be 2 things: 1. There’s a problem with the base of your scream.. usually when people have this issue it’s because they try to create a false folds scream with that kind of “cookie monster type of distortion”, it should not be the case at all. So if that’s your issue I would probably look over the basics and build a solid sound before testing out distortion placements, tunnels and other advanced techniques as such. 2. You’re trying to do a high scream where you usually do your mids and lows, again that is not where it should happen. Highs feel like a different technique on their own, the distortion is made pretty much in the nose or like in the soft pallet area so it’s a whole new “technique” to learn, develop and control Tell me if that made any sense for you :)
@@thierrypatenaude5680 thanks for answering man, I'll try to go over the basics again, I achieved the "distorsion" by doing the exasperated sigh method, but idk, maybe there's something I'm missing
How loud are you actually doing these vocals? Nobody ever explains how loud they are actually doing these and I think alot of my issues are that I'm trying to do it louder than I should be
For my lows, it's about as loud as my normal speaking voice and obviously high screams are gonna be a little louder, but not that much. Yell screams are gonna be the loudest (if you don't count whistle screams) and they are gonna be as loud as a well projected singing note (chest or head voice). Hope that helps! :)
Different techniques have absolutely different levels. Old school false cord growls are extremely loud. Think old school death metal. I personally hate quiet screams, they just don’t convince me. Same goes to fry screams. Dickies screams are quiet. Guys like Alex Terrible are loud AF and I love it. Idk how but projection reflects in the tone, and that’s why I’m not much into modern deathcore styles, most of them do sound like weird sounds to me, not like real screams and growls. Why am I watching this video then? Well, UA-cam recommendations :D
From what I hear, it sounds like he uses normal false folds lows (a bit throaty) and yells for the highs (there's a few tutorials online on how to do both of those things) :)
Nice nice! quick question, you know the traditional false chord high scream? The one that is much louder, but is much more "breathy/airy" and less "voicey" than dickie? [For example, The Red Shore - Valentines Day Massacre, etc.] so basically, to go from that to Dickie style, you add a little bit of "bugs bunny" voice through the nose and then dial back the intensity? Cuz it seems like it's more of a subtle push for this method, rather than a full dog bark/feel it in the chest shout, type of thing.
I would say that Dickie’s high scream is not as loud as the example you shared, it’s more nasal and takes less air than a low perhaps. It is true that it sounds like there is more voice in his scream, but let’s not confuse that with “adding his voice in his scream” which he doesn’t do, the placement of his high scream creates that effect and it is also the reason why tunnels work so well for him. The way you describe the bugs bunny process could actually work in my opinion, only if you shape your mouth so that the nasal overtones sound like a bugs bunny voice and not add your voice under the scream! but there will still be a lot of experimenting to do in order to locate the perfect distortion placement for your highs (because of the distortion being made so far from where it is normally produced for mids or lows) hope that helps :)
Hey, man! How u doin'? What about a tutorial of Black Metal vocalists? Is there blood?! Blood is never a good sign! If there is blood, but it doesn't hurt it might be because your vocal folds are not lubricated enough.. I would limit my practice time and drink around 8 bottles of water a day (which is strongly recommended for vocalists) to limit that problem.
I constantly tasted blood but never actually produced any, difference is that usually by that point I was in pain. I would wager you're likely causing harm, give it a full 24 hours and reset. And like Thierry said, be hydrating a lot!
