    I just learned why you remove the prop while programming. Just got home from getting 20 stitches in the palm of my hand.... haha I’m so stupid sometimes. One thing is for sure, I won’t make that mistake again. The part at 1 hour and 58 min is where I get lost. “We will obviously keep our hands out of the prop area during motor reversing cause we don’t need hand chopping” this totally applies to dummies like me.

      Ouch!!! I've been lucky to only been bit by UMX planes, but this plane would be no-fun!!!

      Brian Phillips it was no fun. Those props are sharp. Btw, greAt videos, I am still trying to program my dx8 g2 transmitter and can’t get the reverse programmed correctly. Which is why it went full throttle at the idle position. Any advice would be great since I almost threw it across the room after the prop cut me open. I followed your video tutorial, but I must have screwed something up.. I get lost when you disable the gear or something. Is gear safe mode and aux 2 reverse motor mode? Gonna take a couple days to regroup and lick my wounds haha. Great videos you and you wife post. I have binge watched a bunch. I look forward to more videos! Should I Inhibit aux2 or gear? Do you set up high and low rates and did you set up the blending to use the flaps and ailerons at same time?

    once again another popular RC airplane review, excellently recorded and edited with much needed informational posted links....... Brain's entertaining and easy to understand commentary is the best that can be found on the internet.....his honest flight reviews, unboxing, assembly and general knowledge is better than the RC dealers and distributers ......

    Was a little confusing going back and forth on the throttle reverse. Other then that thank you so much for taking the time and getting down. Thing rips!!!!!! Thanks to the camera crew as well!
    Update: I was only confused cause if you remember in the ultimate 3D you put reverse on A switch. I had it on a switch but I couldn’t assign safe to switch B it was free but was having a hard time. so I just followed your instructions and it worked great maiden’ed like a Champ. Thank you once again Brian and camera crew!! You guys rock!!

    I think actually you did show case this plane really well as it gives more average flyers like myself a much better understanding of what to realistically expect. And yes, for the vast majority of us even though this can be a very easy plane to fly, the SAFE switch can certainly be your best friend as this plane seems to encourage the pilot to push his or her own limits.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      True! Glad you agree :) I love to see an "expert" like Horizon Hobby Sponsored Professional RC pilots just as much as the next guy, but that can quickly give you an inferiority complex ;) LOL That's why they have me - LOL :)

    Brian your a good pilot, knowledgeable in an awful lot, hope you don't mind a tip, all epf foam planes when unboxed for the first time you really should ( flex ) or exercise hinges on ailerons, flaps, elevator and ruder. This allows easier movement and less ware on servos

    A excellent fun plane to fly. The only two negatives I encountered with my Timber X,(not the night version ), were the tailwheel was set at 45 degrees to the neutral rudder position which I very carefully used a screwdriver to straighten. The second was the foam is dented in under the front cockpit plastic piece.
    I installed the metal spar in the tail right from the start as I intended to mainly use 4 cell batteries. I flew the first flight on a windy day, ( always windy where I live in Australia) and found it handled the wind no problem. Dropping the flaps in the wind is like slamming on the brakes and is a lot of fun.
    Due to the large amount of control surface movement, even with safe on a beginner would find it a handful.
    One thing I would suggest is to have spare props on hand in case of tipping on the nose. The plastic on the wingtips certainly saves the wings if it tips over. It is by far my most favourite plane. Trying to get club members interested in doing STOL spot landing competitions.
    Enjoy watching your videos. Keep them coming.

      I hate when there's little stuff screwed up on unboxing - super annoying!!! Sounds like you love it. I want to maybe put on the slats, just because I want them on there for looks ;)

    • @Stephen30853
      @Stephen30853 4 роки тому

      It might take some of the edge of it’s manoeuvres but if hot glued on should be easier to remove than if superglued.
      I do enjoy flying it. I also have the 1.2 Mustang June Nite and the Viper. Figured if I could handle the Timber X, I should have no problems with the other two. Unfortunately planes here are double the price you guys pay due to the exchange rate so crashing is not an option.

  • @williamhoodtn

    FYI: When I built mine, I found that the internal control horn set-screw for the rudder control wire was a bit loose and while the rudder was likely well aligned at the factory, when I was assembling it the setting moved. I'd suggest after you setup the radio but before you install the wing, you recheck that the rudder and elevator are centered with the radio on (zero trim settings) and then torque down that set screw! Otherwise, you likely will have a "bad day"! Doing the wire bundle zip-ties that Brian recommends is also very smart!

    Love your new flying field (the previous having a bit more of that typical restrictive, subdivision look about it, as I recall)!
    After wanting a sport foamy for more spirited flying & aerobatics, yet liking the 1.55m Timber's STOL & flexible gear for grassy park flying, am looking forward to the Night Timber X -- currently on order! Was difficult to pull off a roll or even inverted flight w/the original, but nice not having to travel to my club's busy field for a quick flight. Your video helped convince me the Timber X can do both quite well. Enjoyed your build & setup. Your wife (or camera crew) is so patient -- a really good sport! Thx for the fun!

    Been watching your vids for over a year now. Found you with your UMX Timber series. Have really enjoyed watching. One thing that would greatly help my enjoyment IMHO would be for you to wear a wireless lavalier mic. It would help eliminate the "boominess" and reverb when in your kitchen. It would help us to hear you better when you're outside and you turn away from the camera mic. Compliments to the camera crew for the great camera work following you flights and keeping the subject in frame. Kudos to a great husband and wife team!

      I have heard this before, and it is on the docket. I have to say, we feel bad that we haven't yet made the relatively small investment ($250ish), but I've been reluctant, as it adds yet another layer of BS to deal with in filming...BUT, we are planning to do it. I just hope you'll hang in there until we take the plunge ;)

      Thanks SlowFlyers! Megan and I designed and built this house, and a big part of this was pointing the house the direction it is. We can sit on the front cap (porch) and watch a beautiful sunset, OR we can sit on the back DECK and watch the sunset too ;) This was a big part of our plans. We started on a paint drawing and later worked with an architect and refined the plans for 10 or so major revisions (might have been 8???). We're very happy with the results.

    Brian. Got this one a week ago. Awesome plane. All the features this one has makes up for the bottom battery installation- that’s the only thing that keeps this from being the perfect specimen from Horizon. Other than that-just beautiful. I was amazed at the 4s power.....I believe I may have to pick up another 1 for back up....If you know what I’m thinking....lol. I was playing hard with the original Eflite Timber and decided to plow the field with it while it was inverted. I liked that plane, and salvaged most of the electronics but never replaced it...I love planes that have lights. When the Night Timber came out-had to have it. I don’t do 3D either-at least not on purpose...haha. Oh-If you not heard already-some folks have experienced some control rods popping loose from the control horns. I highly adding some fuel tubing to all the ones for the wings-especially the way you fly-if you not already thought of it. Enjoyed this video. Kudos to the Camera Crew. 🔥🔥👊👊😉

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      I totally agree about that bottom access for the lipo....but it is what it is ;) The lights are good enough that you can actually tell what direction you're moving, and the orb of light on the ground it fantastic!!!

    I use some double stick tape and stuck the bind plug underneath where that vent is so you can always get to it with the wings being secured and then you don’t have to remove them to rebind it.

    Just got mine and I have to say it’s not what I expected but it’s only day one so I’ll give it time before I truly pass judgment. It’s fun for sure but so finicky, I think I prefer the evolution but mine is down waiting on back ordered parts. The motor burned up because a bearing went out on flight 20. Got so hot it melted the plastic where the motor mount ties into the fuselage. Horizon is taking care of me and sending the parts free of charge but still disappointed because they are on back order and the tentative date is another month away. I’m going to play with the metal rod on the timber X versus the carbon fiber one. But enjoy the donation for selling me on another plane from horizon 🤦‍♂️. Love the channel, keep up the great work.

      Thank you David, but 3D flying is a skill I'm not super familiar with. I have much respect for those guys who can tip their tail feathers on the ground and do it about 3 feet from their nose!!!! Also, heli pilots that can make it look like a rag-doll, not my cup of tea, and don't have any interest in doing it either...but I have a growing appreciation for different styles of flight. My style is scale flying. I LOVE watching planes fly.

    Well Brian, I hate to say it but I was glad to see the Timber X nosing over and bouncing on landings, I have the exact same experience. Being with only 4 months of RC Flying, the Timber X was a handful. If you can fly it comfortably without SAFE, you can fly about anything. The thing is so responsive it's amazing. You can invent aerobatics with that sucker. Looking forward to your night flight

    Hi Brian,
    At around 1:59 you wondered about the A switch on the IX12. I have the IX12 and the A switch is a 2 position. I setup safe on that switch. I also tried to do the advanced setup but had problems with the left aileron not going the same direction as the others. Decided to revert it back to standard setup and in the process I had two spare servo extensions. As it was necessary to re-bind the plane I plugged one servo extension into the bind port to make it easier to plug in the bind plug. I didn’t run it through to the battery area but I think it would reach. I also deleted the model on the transmitter and started with a fresh setup.
    The battery straps are starting to stretch now so I will be fixing that problem shortly.
    I found it odd that they didn’t supply two servo extensions to do the advanced setup. At the time I purchased the plane the extensions weren’t available here.
    The IX12 is a great transmitter and I’m glad I bought it when I did. A very capable transmitter. The IX20 has way more features (sorry camera crew!).

    Took a hiatus from flying the Apprentice from a shoulder/arm injury during a rainy workday at the club field - slipped and fell directly on right shoulder HARD! That was some 4 months ago. During that time I took the plane apart, stripped off the decals and am painting it to resemble the Cessna Skyhawk that I owned for seven years. At this week's swap meet I bought a BNF Night Timber 1.2 for a great price planning to take it with me on a 1 month plus camping road trip - smaller size to help with storage. Could be easy to fly with SAFE/AS3X. Should be back to flying this April.

    Thanks for your quick reply. The plane is a BNF and has the AR637TA, and I built from a blank profile, starting with the same settings as our other Timber X, but I changed some things. Then I tried the two downloads available from Spektrums website mentioned earlier.
    I agree and thought that the AS3X is supposed to always be on, which is why I was wondering what is possibly wrong or if I some how conflicted it off or something. Our other Timber X, is also the 1.2M, basically same plane except it has the AR636A reciever and I like that it's touchy. It flys great, with both the iX12 and DX6 (Gen2). That is why I bought the Night Timber, because of how well the our other Timber X 1.2 flys in variable wind conditions, so my wife and I can fly together, with basically the same plane. Perfect manageable size too! I will compare the settings between the two again lol.
    I made a mistake saying I was using the 4S 5000mAh batteries, that was wrong, We actually use 3S 30C & 4S 50C 3200mAh's.
    Thanks again, I glad to hear it confirmed that the AS3X is always on and can't be turned off with the AR637TA receiver. Now I know it is something with my settings and I'll work on that.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  Рік тому +2

      You have to split the wiring on the ailerons and flaps (ailerons might already be split), then Factory Reset the Rx to make a 2 Ailerons and 2 Flaps wind type. This is easier said than done, but if you get these three settings done, then work through FORWARD PROGRAMMING, to do first time setup of AS3X then SAFE, if you wish, but you probably won't have enough channels to do that on the NX8.
      Good luck, we don't have a video of this part, but know why you would want to do it. Also, since you'd be setting up the Rx to FACTORY DEFAULT, you can get MORE THROW from the Ailerons ;)

Im starting to wonder if maybe the gyro was defective from the day I got it cause it always seems to happen at the same time frame on every flight. Are you a beginner pilot wishing to buy this plane? I am a beginner pilot and I bought this plane because of this video and others like it, and because I wanted the lights for night flight. Here is an update on my thoughts about this plane after 10 or so flights:
    1. Forget thoughts of flying in the dark. You lose depth of field when the sun goes down and a crash is likely for a beginner pilot. The lights are very cool, but they aren't for you.
    2. Before flying this plane, I had flown a small park flyer (I forget the name), a Carbon Cub S+ and a Conscendo Evolution. This plane is a big step up from those planes in the sense that it is very fast and the control surfaces make it very twitchy for me. It rolls, climbs, loops, dives all very, very fast. Of course you can slow things down, but in trying to figure out how to slow things down you'll probably crash along the way. Get it up high becuase you are going to be flying some acrobatics when you don't mean to be flying acrobatics.
    3. Landing is MUCH harder than it was for any of the prior planes I had flown. This is a heavier plane and it is easy to break the plastic in the fuselage that the landing gear screws into. If you are a beginner pilot, I would say a hard landing is the first way you will break this plane. And when you break that plastic in the fuselage, it is never as strong as it was after you glue it together again with epoxy. So you'll be applying epoxy to your fuselage around the the landing gear more than once. OTOH, if you have access to an experienced pilot that will buddy box with you, you should be able to avoid all the landing problems.
    4. Unless you are just flying ovals, you probably won't be able to fly this scale the way Brian does in this video. You could just fly it on SAFE, which is what I did a lot, but eventually you'll want to fly the plane yourself, and when you do, it won't be a smooth flyer.
    5. 4S power is a lot of power in this plane, but it's kind of made for 4S power. It flew much faster than what I was used to, and bad things happen much more quickly in this plane. You could just put a 3S battery in it, reduce the throws, throw in some EXPO, turn on SAFE, etc. but if you are doing all that it means you bought the wrong plane.
    I have crashed my Night Timber X a few times, but it is still flying. HH sent me a new fuselage for free, so that was nice of them (I just put it together last night and it's like a new plane...anyone want a good deal on a Night Timber X?)
    ******************************************************
    But for me, the Night Timber X is more stressful than it is fun. ******* **********************************************
    I have just placed an order for the Turbo Timber. I wish I had done that in the first place. Brian told me to start with the Turbo Timber, but I didn't listen. (And Brian, if you are reading this, you should not have told me to "start" with the TT, but you should have told me that "the TT is a lot more fun than the NTX.")
    One last point, if you don't want to fly 3D, if you consider yourself a scale flyer, then I'm not sure this is the plane for you even if you are an experienced pilot. Turbo Timber seems like the way to go for a scale experience in a plane like this, but I haven't flown one yet.
    One very experienced pilot who is very much into STOL told me that he sold his Night Timber X and purchased a Turbo Timber because NTX was too heavy for good STOL. And the NTX is not even marketed as an all-out 3D plane.
    I think part of the reason I purchased the NTX instead of the TT is because I was looking at the TT as closer to a beginner plane. Someone says "you aren't ready for the NTX" and I think "oh hell I can figure it out." Who wants to spend money on beginner equipment only to be unhappy with it after 8 or 9 flights (think of that first crappy transmitter you wasted $100 on)? That WOULD BE a reasonable way to look at it if the TT was built for beginners and the NTX was built for more experienced pilots. But that's not how they designed these planes.
    The TT IS more suitable for intermediate pilots, but even if you are an expert pilot that doesn't mean you are going to pick the NTX over the TT, and the experience of the expert pilot I just mentioned is an example of that. It's about the kind of flying you want to do.
    Don't get me wrong...I think this plane is everything Brian and others say it is. It's just that it's definitely not for beginners, and it isn't for every expert either. It's only halfway to a 3D plane, and it's halfway to a STOL plane. It'll give you a taste of each without really getting you there. And if you want to emulate the sort of flying Brian does in this video, then I would say you'd be better off with the TT.

      Luke - HEAR ME ON THIS....JUST flew them both this weekend, and I was reminded of this...
      The Maule is a great choice, BUT the Turbo Timber (not the Timber X) would be an even better choice. The flight envelope on the Maule is just a lot FASTER, not impossible, or even a bad choice at all for a second plane, but the Turbo Timber 1.5m is super forgiving, and flies a lot longer on a charged pack of the same size. I know you didn't want to hear this, since you're concerned about space in your car, but I can tell you with 100% certainty, you will thank me later... You will may be totally overwhelmed with the Night Timber X and I bet you'll be very disappointed, as a result- it's NOT a bad plane, but you have to be ON IT! It will stress you out!
      Notwithstanding your transportation issues, as they're both pretty big...both of the LONGER wing span planes options are BETTER options, with the Turbo Timber being the best option for your "next" plane given your current plane is the Aeroscout (one of the easiest, and best beginner planes around, btw).
      Turbo Timber 1.5m bit.ly/2CiTmSB (This plane is an AWESOME choice given your criteria)

Will you do so in a follow up to see how much it degrades aerobatic performance? Hi Brian & Megan (camera crew).
    I really appreciate your video’s and watch a lot of them. I think I’ am having a problem with my AS3X modes or maybe I am misunderstanding how the AS3X should work. Hopefully it’s just my radio set up on this BNF Night Timber X. I have a Spektrum iX12. I have everything setup and working perfectly the way I like it including reverse throttle, except I can’t seem to get the AS3X modes (any of them) to work when I have Safe Select turned off. Everything appears to work fine on the “monitor mode” screen, even the Aux3 gain adjustment on the knob is working in the analog switch setup screen, but gain doesn’t show any change and nothing happens at the plane as far as stability.
    It’s either the control surfaces are way too limited for my liking with Safe on or I have full range of control surfaces like I normally like it, but no AS3X gain/stability at all. I’ve done everything I can think of, including the obvious steps the manual shows, i.e. throttling up to activate the AS3X, but nothing works.
    With no wind, or in light wind, no problems, but we have a lot of wind often, so I fly in gusty conditions a lot or I won’t be able to fly much at all, so I would like the AS3X to work, but like the fact that Safe is available.
    Overall, the plane flies fantastically and does everything you ask of it easily! I enjoy flying it! I’m using Spektrum 4S 5000mAh 50C batteries. I would just like to have a little AS3X stability to help with gusty or unpredictable wind conditions as the plane seems very light and affected a lot by wind with everything turned off. I’d never used the Safe Mode until I needed to the other day and was glad to have it. It literally saved the plane as strong winds came up all the sudden and I was having a real tough time just keeping the plane in the air, to bring it back and land it. I'm pretty sure I know what AS3X feel like with Safe switched off, as our other planes that use it feel stable in wind including our other Timber X which feels very stable, yet extremely acrobatic. When I do the test shown on page 13 of the manual for the Night Timber X to see if AS3X is working, the control surfaces dont move. I can't seem to activate the AS3X. I’ve bound and rebound many times, even trying the Spectrum Night Timber Download models, the EFL13850 EFlite Night Timber X BNF Advanced setup & the EFL13850 EFlite Night Timber X BNF Basic with Reverse. Each time I bind, I’m getting the bind is complete and the double dance confirmation of the control surfaces, but with Safe turned off apparently no AS3X.
    I still fly the plane, In fact I just flew it tonight, but something is definitely wrong , as it is a lot harder to fly right now than the other Timber X, even without wind. I have a regular BNF Timber X with the AR636A receiver for my wife and it’s AS3X works fine with Safe switched off, (quite stable).
    You and Megan know your stuff, and so do a lot of you subscribers. Hopefully someone may know what I’m not understanding or what I’m doing wrong. Sorry for the super long comment everyone. Thanks again Team Phillips, for your very detailed & cool videos!

      You can't shut off AS3X on this plane STOCK as a BNF. If you installed the Rx yourself (As a PNP) then you will be able to access forward programming if you're using AR637T or you can hook up to the PC with the AR636B.
      I THINK you're feeling what I was feeling...this plane is TOUCHY. You have to put in a LOT of EXPO to make this plane fly like the 1.5m Timber, for example. This plane is way more 3D than the 1.5m Timber, and I think that's why you're feeling somewhat "out of control"...
      Here's the short answer to a LOT of information you shared...this plane is harder to fly. I didn't even know you could control the AS3X gains on an AR636B...I thought that came with the AR637T / AR637TA...but I might be mistaken. When you bind, you're only picking between AS3X (Default) and SAFE Select - only SAFE (sensor aided flight envelope - auto leveling) is switchable if bound for SAFE Select....AS3X is never "off" unless you've reprogrammed the AR636B or the AR637T, and in which case, I have NO IDEA.
      I'm sorry I can't answer any better for you. Maybe another of the viewers might have an idea. I think you'll need to clarify WHAT Rx you're using...was this plane a BNF? Has it been reprogrammed? Did you build from a blank profile? These questions will help me, and others who might be able to help you out.

    I'm new to the hobby, I bought the carbon cub s2 as my first plane. Really have enjoyed it. Would the night timber x be a good 2nd plane or which plane would you recommend for a 2nd plane and would the dxs transmitter that came with the cub work on this? Thanks, I've watched many of your videos, great flying and info on the hobby.

      Night Timber or Timber X would be poor choices for a second plane, in my personal opinion. They are CRAZY, and you will almost certainly feel very out of control. That being said, some make this move, and some are okay with it. The plane is great, but I wouldn't recommend it as a second plane.
      HOWEVER
      You might consider the 1.5m Turbo Timber in stead, which is a LOT less "hard" to fly, and you'll still probably think it's "Crazy". It's also a great value, and you will LOVE it in the "everyday" flight arena. It's amazing!
      You might consider the UMX, if you're wanting something that'll fly in a small area...
      Here's the links, but obviously it's up to you.
      P.S. I have playlists, that show these planes, if you want to see them too... the playlists are organized by plane, but there's a TON of them ;)

      @@BrianPhillipsRC On this video you mention it is easy to fly so why wouldn't it be a good second plane? I have been looking at the E-Flite Apprentice STS 15e you did a video on but think this might be a better option as I can fly it in safe mode then when I advance I will have a plane I can do cool stunts with. If you pick the night timber x or timber x you will want to make sure you have some low rates programmed to learn with unless your in safe mode of course. In safe you need 100% throws. If your deciding between the two timber’s I would get the night timber. It allows you to fly into dusk and dark hours. Love it!

    Got the standard X, Turbo and the little UMX version and to my mind these X versions are the the best. It does everything the bigger span Turbo version can do and even more.
    When you consider you can then do it all off water as well, I wonder if this new night version now takes the title from the standard X of having the widest flight envelope of any RC plane ever made?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому +1

      No ignorance, it's an uncommon thing in RC planes, but becoming more common. The ECS (Electronic Speed Control) that runs the motor now will run the motor backward as well! Makes for a crazy sound and lot less efficiency, but it's a sight to see, especially in the air!!! This is accomplished by using another channel to change the condition of the ESC...very quick and easy, but it is CRAZY to fly and have reverse thrust...a skilled 3D pilot can do amazing things with it!!!

    Brilliant video!!! Thank you and your wife so much!!!! Really difficult to get to all the wires and the binding... no comment. Brilliant suggestions!!! Question: Do you always do the setup manually or is this just for the video? I normally download the data from spektrum and via my SD card load it onto my radio and then adjust it if necessary.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому +2

      yes. I don't download them (ever). I've heard a few guys suggesting to download the files, but I like to have a tight control over what's going on with the plane, and then I can better respond to issues. Some are self-inflicted, no doubt.

    Hey Brian no need to feel bad your very busy guy, love all the new videos posted. I actually called horizon and they wanted to send me out a servo that was on backorder? My concern was the plane never made it off the kitchen table and they wanted me to install a new servo on a brand new plane? I insisted on a new plane so i sent the defective one back and reordered a new one. I'm watching my account to make sure it is credited. The new one came and its assembled and bound without any problems so far.

    Brian yes its only one side of the wing the left side and it vibrates like it has a bad servo on the alerion serrvo or flap servo? Does not matter if im holding the plane or its sitting level, as soon as i test the control surface it go crazy? But when i touch the flap or alerion surface it stops until i actuate that control surface. This plane has never made it off the kitchen table or my stand?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 роки тому

      Now I feel really bad that it's been 6 days since I replied to comments (crazy week - So sorry). The servo is almost certainly broken. You will have to trouble shoot a bit to figure out which one is which. Pull the wing, and see if the servo wires are hooked up backward (yes, I've done it too)...then if they are...fix it...if not, you'll have to get into surgery mode.
      If you wish, you might choose to call Horizon Hobby and request a replacement PART, or see what they offer. They will probably give you a few things to try, but just be firm and fair, and don't take "no" for an answer. You'll get what you need...but don't forget what you need might be a whole wing, and they'll try to get you to take a servo. I've found it's easier to start with a whole new plane, and work your way back to the wing...but that's just been my experience.
