Jeff, your videos are a goldmine. My apartment was always chilly so on your advice I ordered a humidifier. Sooo much more cozy! So my heat pump went out and I'm using a $13 space heater and once the damp air in the room is heated up it hardly has to kick on at all, even though it is on the medium setting and the dial set back to 1/3!
I also cleaned the coils on my fridge - they were buried in dust.
I can't begin to thank you for how much you've saved me already!

Hey jeff! Ty for the ideas!...my dad was an electrician & he used to tell us when your cooking w/a big pot, don't use the big burner, use the small burner & don't keep messing w/the thermostat on the air conditioner or heater.
we also turned down the thermometer on the water heater too. I still clean my coils on my refrigerator.

I have been struggling to lower my electric bill for what seems like forever. My electric company sends me an email every month or so that shows how my use of electricity doubles my neighbors and gives me ideas on how to lower my bill. NOTHING LIKE YOURS THOUGH. I watched your first video and thought ok I've been doing most of this and have purchased the spendy light bulbs. No real difference in the bill though. It even shot up a bit from last year. :(
This one though.... I always thought I had a clean home. Ummm no I guess not. My refrigerator is the culprit! Gross!!! Finally. Finally! My electricity usage is dropping. Thank you so much for these tips! You are a life saver!

This chap is brilliant, he knows what he is talking about and he knows how to explain it. Like most Americans he uses more words than necessary, but then he is aiming at an American audience. I reckon that the BBC should make a television series, based closely on this chaps videos, it would really help British householders to understand their fuel consumption and how to cut it dramatically.

Hi, please don't do not take the 'talk too much' as a personal criticism. It seems to be the way in North America. In Europe we are more used to an economy of words. It is so refreshing to see an instructional video which shows how to do something, rather than one which misses out most of the important steps on how to do it.

Good, informative video. I've successfully maintained and repaired my refrigerators along these same principles for years. One thing I've done in addition is added a better material to the cardboard backing that covers the compressor and fan and it helps tremendously. Use the cardboard that's on the fridge as a template, cut out the pattern on the better material (I used a linoleum type product), cut it, then I glued it to the cardboard and fastened it back on. You no longer have to struggle with the cardboard breaking up and making it almost impossible to reattach.

I never even thought about appliances that are constantly sucking energy, even when not in use, and have a feeling that is a contributing factor in my case; ie., microwave with digital clock, coffee maker with digital clock, oven with digital clock, PC in "sleep mode", cable box, etc. Good job and thanks for passing this info along!

    Love your videos Jeff!
Such great sensible advice. (note I didn't say common sense cuz there is no such thang)- but really sensible, logical tips rooted in basic physics principles.
I especially appreciate your tip on passive thermal moderation, using the frozen water in Milk Jugs as cold mass to retain and maintain the freezer temperature.
Never again will I leave my freezer empty - which you refer to as 'a bad deal'.
I have now seen several of your videos on Missouri Wind & Solar including your very instructive 'How To Heat & Cool your home for Free' (which is absolutely what EVERY home with an *E* *lectric* dryer should have set up) and the misting kit set-up on an external air-conditioning unit demonstration - amazing how far a little smarts will go.

John Wayne Wow! They did that because they probably had first used real ice boxes. You know what I mean. No motor, nonelectric, really pretty much just a wooden box in which you placed the biggest block of ice which could reasonably fit, that the iceman delivered once or twice a week, & you put in a few precious items you wished to keep cool. If you had extra space, you filled it with wadded up newspapers & made sure the drain pan underneath never overflowed. An icebox was literally that, a wooden box with an ice block in it.

Great videos, tho I do some apt. maintenance besides contracting. I had a chuckle when the ECONOMIZER GUY had the most stuffed frig coils I've ever seen, and believe me, renters don't clean squat!

The free fridge we inherited from a renovation isn't keeping cold. It starts out ok, then stops cooling (good thing I was keeping track). Because of this vid, I'm diagnosing it right now... just have to wait the 20 minutes to see if the clock on the defrost timer is bad or not... Thanks to you, I am an amateur appliance repair tech. Thank goodness for youtube university!!

      LOL, good luck!
More to some things than this video covers, but a good start!
My Side BY Side fridge/freezer has issues also.
It NEVER defrosts the coils so in summer I have to shut it off, remove the back panel in freezer, and the coils are ice caked solid so have to let that thaw out, then back together after a few hours and all is fine for a few months till it happens again.
New issue is that if room is really cold nothing turns on! I got the frig in my workshop which is not heated unless I am in there working. So room gets really cold and nothing turns on, Ice in freezer melts to water! Room warmer up to maybe 40F-50F then unit turns on and water freezes solid! Go figure that one out! LOL
Too cold in room to run the freezer yet the ice melts to water! LOL

Love your videos, great advice, but do have a question if you can help any. After a couple years, my GE Arctica side-by-side started freezing my meats in the meat drawer and the vegetables in the vegetable drawer. Had a repair man come out to repair, he ordered a part and after $200. still froze the items. Had them come back a few times, but gave up and have just dealt with it. Do you have any idea what causes this to happen?
Understand if you don't answer, but it has been very annoying.
