To protect the element from burning up if the water-level somehow got too low you could mount a simple bulb type level switch just above the element inside the bucket which would cut off the power supply. This would eliminate having to worry about the amount of water left above the element if using as an in-place shower.

The distance he put the spout up from the bottem of the bucket should never allow it to go empty.

That is pretty cool Jeff! Almost could rig it as a "slow cooker". Throw in some meat, potatoes, whatever, and you could feed two families. Not sure if a plastic 5-gal would be best though...but, with that DC heater element and maybe a used stainless pressure cooker deal...might work. Still cool to have hot water like you did tho.

I use ( 3 ) 10 feet long 6 inch pvc pipes painted black and also 3" inch 10 feet long black pipe painted black. No element is needed on real sunny days-110 degrees is common. But one is installed for very cloudy days. Your adjustable solar heating element is a perfect choice . My pipes are a pre heating water source -they gravity feed into-the cold water side of a 40 gallon water tank someone thru out in the trash. My solar system is 50 -100 watt solar panels. The best element out there for sale is your adjustable heater element-

Okay I know nothing about anything solar or off grid. I'm a mom who wants to buy a house and has been saving money on utilities using your methods and teaching my kids at the same time since we homeschool. I just bought our first set of solar panels and got rid of all the lights in our house and replaced them with solar lights. I feel like a rockstar lol. I got rid of our dryer and am using a line now. I want to get rid of our fridge and water heater usage as well. How could I harness this beautiful hot water to shower my kids? Everything else we could just use cold water but showers have to be hot or my husband will crash down on my plans.

If you are basically using it in one area put a 1 1/2 hole in the center of the top that way to add more capacity you can put a 5 gallon water jug on top if 50 pounds is to heavy use a 3 gallon jug this way when the jug is empty you'll still have 4 gallon of water in the water heater also a high temp shut off would be nice watch for someone getting rid of a holy electric water heater and salvage the controller off it or find someone upgrading to a bigger tank and convert it to dc that way you can have pressure water

If you put a funnel in the top of the level indicator and put your hot water outlet at the top of the bucket then you wont need a tap. All you do is poor cold water into the funnel which enters the bottom of the bucket and hot water will flow out of the top outlet. That way you dont run the risk of running the bucket dry

I think I will use one of your adjustable water heaters for direct connect to my solar panels to heat my aquaponics water during winter,, I notice you use a 48 volt water heater with a 24 volt solar panel, is this a better way to do it for a direct connection to solar panels? You said something about less resistance ,, does than mean more heat produced from less sunlight maybe ? Using the setup you show in this video?
I am going to call you about this heh ,, because I want to grow fish I can eat and veggies all year long ,, and I would like to use my solar and wind power to do it ,, Aquaponics ,, I think it is the future of a small scale, healthy organic family farm ,, it can grow more healthy food all year long if setup properly, than anything I have seen before, In a 20'X20' greenhouse I think i can grow more than enough food for my family,, fish and veggies :) It might get boring ,, but it is healthy

You wouldn't want someone to accidentally plug that bucket into 120VAC! lol
What you can do in such situations when you need to use mains type connectors on lower voltages is to just use the earth & neutral wires/pins for your low voltage connexions. That way if someone plugs it into the wall providing the (outlet is wired correctly) no current will flow.
Or if you want to take advantage of all three cores in the cable: Tie the hot & neutral wires together at each end, making your circuit between these and the earth wire. This isn't quite as safe as the above method but if it is accidentally plugged into the mains it will just trip the circuit breaker rather than sending the mains voltage through your element or other low voltage load.
Note that paralleling up the two cores will NOT double the current carrying capacity of the cable because one leg is still a single core. But it WILL lower the overall voltage drop on the cable, which could be useful if the run is fairly long.

+xanataph Well if you built it and are stupid enough to plug it into a wall socket then that person deserves to get some juice.

+MissouriWindandSolar Agree. It's not so much if you're stupid, more about if someone *else* gets their hands on it (who doesn't know a hell of a lot about electricity). "Oh look a bucket with a plug on it..." lol

A heater element is a pure resistance so AC or DC does not matter, the voltage does matter if you want to use PV panels.

Jeff I'm now a full time RVer. I'm thinking a 4 ft high 10 gallon water tower routed to the hot side of the RV that would be pressurized off the same input feeding my cold fresh tank. (Y fitting before the sidewall input) Are your DC elements full duty cycle or should I put in a lower voltage one to "maintain" the heat and use the higher 48v one a bit before we need the hot water? I'll be a customer soon for many items. Thanks!

If the bucket was black, and put in a sunny spot above shower area you would use much less power during the day.
