Great interview, thanks for sharing it. Barry´s comments are sheer gold. Funny, he picks Jordan as two and when he recapitulates he says Magic, Bird, me, Russell and Wilt. That is awesome, great for Barry!!!! So if he excludes himself, those five are: Magic, Jordan, Bird, Russell and Chamberlain, and those 5 are what most of the people born in 1990 and before would pick, with the alternative of picking Jabbar for either Wilt or Bill.
My all time starting five would be: Wilt or Russell or Kareem Magic Bird Jordan Rick Barry LeBron isn't in the conversation. I would take Hakeem, Charles Barkley, Bernard King, John Havlicek, Kevin McHale all day over him And don't even come with that Shaq business..he was nothing but a huge body without any true basketball skills, IQ, or motivation..funny guy but a poor basketball player: couldn't hit anything more than 8 ft, couldn't run the break, other than being big he wasn't feared defensively, was taken out of late game situations because of his free throws being so bad..he was a unique, successful unskilled big man
Yo: Same situation for me and my son-trying out for HS basketball. Both got a five minute try out. I grabbed about 10 rebounds in five minutes. For my son: former HS coach was his personal coach for Triple Threat, and coach Joe told my son's HS coach about him. After my son's customary five minutes, he later saw Coach Joe who asked him: Was Charlie so and so on there? Same crap system. This HS coach recruited guyz from out of district-and dumped local players-at least two had the skills at guard to play. I am glad they have AAU. However, after my son "carried the team on his back," according to his coach at another league. I asked him to pick my son for this man's AAU team-no dice. My son lost interest in game. I believe that approximately age 14 is key age-you either have BB Jones or it is just a game you play from time to time.
6:38 on the list of the best international NBA players must be and Peja Stojakovic. 1992 .Dream team at the Olympics. The reason? Sabonis and the USSR took gold in Seoul 1988.
He says that he can't compare players from different positions to chose a so called goat, but he clearly likes Wilt Chamberlain, and this is something that I like of him, and his top 5 is the same top 5 I have been ever picked, Wilt Bill, Larry (Himself), MJ and Magic.

@@spactick Well he is possibly the only guy you'd want to be on the free throw line instead or Mr. Clutch. I have to admit I can't remember who else was on his warrior team except maybe Nate Thurmond?
He is absolutely correct about Clifford Ray. I was apprehensive about the trade with Chicago involving Nate Thurmond for the Warriors at the time, but Ray made the difference in that team winning the 1974-75 championship. He was a bit undersized and didn't score a lot, but he more than made up for that as a defender and his playmaking and rebounding role on offensive. A true legend in the Bay Area and dolphin lovers everywhere.
You have to value Rick's opinion. He played against the greats in the '60's and '70's and has seen the greats from the '80's onward. Rick gets overlooked by many. Why? I don't know for sure, but he was a fantastic player. Nobody, I mean nobody, could stop him.
Cause he's an asshole. Like Kareem doesn't get the proper respect. Moses either. Russell.. all the guys who didn't like to talk get lost in the shuffle... Save Bird. Him an Pop are the only loveable assholes I can think of in the NBA
Barry get overlooked maybe because he jumped to the ABA in his absolute prime. Those stats and records he accumulated in that league aren't counted in his career totals.
He pissed off the NBA big wigs when he sued to get out of his contract, when he lost the suit, he sat out an entire season just to spite the jackholes.
@@davidrox4591well the courts decided he had to play for the warriors, if at all. Given that he gave his word to Oakland and signed with them, I can certainly see why he reluctantly sat out.
Kareem narrowly over Wilt at Center. Wilt only won 2 Titles in 13 years. Russell basically owned Wilt, and Wilt played on some excellent teams from 1965-73.
@@LIBlurr I have trouble seeing that Russ had “better, deeper” teams than Wilt’s 76er teams from 1965-68. Those 76er teams were loaded. They won 3 consecutive Eastern Division pennants over the Celtics, and always played Boston even up during the regular season. Wilt had many Hall of Fame teammates, and they had a deep bench as well. Except for ‘67, they came up a cropper in the playoffs to Boston. Russ and the Celtics knew how to win, but I can’t say it was because they were “better” and “deeper by far.” All together, Russ and Wilt met 9 times in the playoffs, and Russ won 8 and Wilt one. If that’s not ownership, it’s certainly dominance.

Had Rick Barry not left Golden State for the ABA the Warriors would have been a very formidable squad. They may have stopped Milwaukee and LA from getting titles.
Yep, with Wilt and Russell protecting the rim, no dunks, or layups. They both could run the floor, exceptionally well, and all day long. Blocked perimeter shots, when needed, also.
They sure don't. And I can't ignore how much of the disrespect comes out of the woodwork years after these greats retire. Wilt, Larry, Oscar, West, even MJ. Crap like Wilt played against midgets. Larry, Oscar would get locked up today. West only had Oscar on his level. MJ never had a real rival. Etc, etc.
Rick was great and very underrated in my opinion but, not the complete player Larry Bird was. Larry was the greatest 3 of all time. Even MJ agrees and he said it's not close
You can compare positions the problem is though when you do MJ doesn't look like the greatest wilt does because he had guard speed and skills as well other than free throws.

Barry’s fave teammate, Clifford Ray, is a fascinating dude: plays all of the woodwind instruments, saved a dolphin’s life by pulling a sharp object out of its stomach, and has more career rebounds than points.
Barry was a good player but I would take Dave Debusschere over Rick Barry. Debusschere was a better rebounder and defender than Barry, had an accurate long range jumper and drive that baseline to the basket with the best of them. He was the missing piece that helped the Knicks win 2 championships and when he retired at age 34 because of numerous injuries the Knicks were never the same team.
@@josephkelleher8820well Dave certainly rates over Rick in those areas. However, I'll take Rick's top notch and versatile scoring as well as his underrated passing. He was truly the Warriors prime playmaker, after he returned from the ABA. And his defense steadily improved as well. Though not to Dave's level. That said, both Rick and Julius Erving had tremendous respect for Dave. And I'll even acknowledge he may have a more ideal fit for those Knick teams at the time. It was truly an excellent collection of the right pieces together.

That was some awful coaching to do so much benching in the finals, when duncan wasn't injuried.
Wilt stopped scoring after just 6 years because he was bored and started assisting still he is top ten in scoring can u sink in what i am talking about

So if he excludes himself, those five are: Magic, Jordan, Bird, Russell and Chamberlain, and those 5 are what most of the people born in 1990 and before would pick, with the alternative of picking Jabbar for either Wilt or Bill.
My all time starting five would be:
Wilt or Russell or Kareem
Magic
Bird
Jordan
Rick Barry
LeBron isn't in the conversation. I would take Hakeem, Charles Barkley, Bernard King, John Havlicek, Kevin McHale all day over him
And don't even come with that Shaq business..he was nothing but a huge body without any true basketball skills, IQ, or motivation..funny guy but a poor basketball player: couldn't hit anything more than 8 ft, couldn't run the break, other than being big he wasn't feared defensively, was taken out of late game situations because of his free throws being so bad..he was a unique, successful unskilled big man
Great interview

That's not ego for Barry to have himself on 'his' greatest team of all-time, it's being honest. He was that great. Altho I'm

@@Sota-son both were great (but different) players. if the 75' Warriors went up against the 72' Lakers? I'd take the Warriors over the Lakers because Barry was a scoring machine when he wanted to be. They might go 6 games, but I'd take

LOVE HIS LIST AND THE ACKNOWLEGEMENT OF THE OTHERS WHO COULD BE MENTIONED, TOO.

I had Wilt at C and Russell at 4 also. I also have Bird at 3, Jordan at 2 and either Magic or Oscar at 1.
Kareem narrowly over Wilt at Center. Wilt only won 2 Titles in 13 years. Russell basically owned Wilt, and Wilt played on some excellent teams from 1965-73.

Russ didn’t own Wilt ! He had the better, deeper team by far.

Greatest overseas player.. Hakeem.
I would agree but remember he did play college ball in the USA. So I wouldn't consider him. He didn't come out of those leagues over there.
@@maximostiberius2324 I feel you. I would would have to agree to disagree on that because that boy grew up in Africa (elementary, high school and all that) he was a football (soccer) player and and was encouraged to play basketball due to his height. Rick going to get some rings with that team
Maybe All the rings!
Yep, with Wilt and Russell protecting the rim, no dunks, or layups. They both could run the floor, exceptionally well, and all day long. Blocked perimeter shots, when needed, also.
People just don't realize how good the Legends of the past was
They sure don't.
Correct, not in the same tier not close but nobody is close to Bird.
Only major aspect Larry was clearly superior was in rebounding. Rick was easily a better defender, at least one on one.
The 5 I would pick to play against his team would be 1.Penny Hardaway 2.Kobe Bryant 3.Larry Bird 4.Hakeem Olajuwan 5. Kareem Abdul Jabar.
You can compare positions the problem is though when you do MJ doesn't look like the greatest wilt does because he had guard speed and skills as well other than free throws.
Wilt had to adjust his game to win a championship. He had to play like Bill Russell.
Shooting Guards are the best option for scoring
Olijawon? Jabbar? Ice Man? Pippen? Bird and Magic for a few seasons had a great rivalry. They were both fantastic at every level.

Great Starting 5 I agree whole heartedly
Barry’s fave teammate, Clifford Ray, is a fascinating dude: plays all of the woodwind instruments, saved a dolphin’s life by pulling a sharp object out of its stomach, and has more career rebounds than points.
Rick Barry is can't go wrong player to start a team with on and off the court.
I'm not surprised he chose himself.😄
