Russell was a great HOF player. He started with 4 other HOF players plus more HOF players on the bench. His coach is in HOF. That being said. Wilt is by far the GREATEST center to ever play the game. The GREATEST athlete the NBA has ever seen.

Except for Cousy and Havlicek those other HOF players rode Bill Russell’s coattails. Which one of those guys would definitely make the HOF if they weren’t playing for Boston? Bill Russell didn't frustrate Wilt Chamberlain, Bill played fair and square against Wilt, Wilt respected that but Red set up the Celtics to hack the hell out of Wilt, fouling him off and on the ball, hard fouling and the nba referees accepted it because the NBA head officials thought Wilt winning all the time would spoil the game.
Celtics forward Tom Heinsohn claimed that “half the fouls against Wilt were hard fouls...he took the most brutal pounding out of any player ever.”
Red took advantage of this situation and when you use an unsavoury method to win, its always the person who calls out the loudest that's not innocent?
Hack a Wilt was the norm and when the Bulls later on in the life used on nearly every play a hard foul when Wilt wasn't even on the ball, they finally changed the rules?
Under these limitations Wilt behaved generously refusing accept once to retaliate and the character of the man to play the ball and not the man, hurting people wasn't Wilts thing and neither was winning at all cost, there was a line that Wilt Chamberlain wouldn't cross, hurting someone for a game was possibly that line?
Bill & Wilt together on a interview, Wilt said, " I wanted to play basketball the way it's creator intended! "
Bill Russell made a wonderful comment back to Wilt Chamberlain his friend, " you played it better than he would have imagined! "

Look up Bill Russell’s free throw average it isn't much different and he didn't have the physical abuse or the referees ignoring it to contend with?
They made the game easier for players after Wilt, especially MJ, the nba also brought out new stats to destroy the legacy of statistically anomaly of Wilt Chamberlain.
The 1960s arguably was the fastest era of basketball from end to end, so much more demanding, any sport that increases your metabolic rate means controlling the fine motor skills becomes a variable, add elbows to the hands and face and scoring gets harder, add hand checking on and off the ball, ignoring the rules and 'yes' it's unsprortsman like conduct.
Wilt beefed himself up making it almost impossible to physically stop him and finally his managers recommend a different approach and in those years with different rules he won two titles?

Red Auerbach was never going to say anything nice about Wilt because he didn't like him. Wilt was the first player to tell him no and Jewish people (most to all) don't like Black people telling them no and when we do, they reprise against them us the end. They had opposite philosophies and political views. People don't realize Wilt's NBA career was largely sabotaged because he was too intelligent and wouldn't go along with the Status Quo. A lot of this also has to do with why Wilt isn't regarded as the GOAT when he really is and the records say he is. For example, MJ is lauded as the GOAT because look who controls him. Wilt didn't commit to Red early on and he told him in so many words to go f yourself. Auerbach was just as stubborn as Wilt was if not more, because he could get away with it being Jewish, and being part of the braintrust and powerbrass that owns and controls Entertainment, the Media and NBA. As far as his explanation on Russell being a better athlete than Wilt, that's just him being disingenuous. Red's teams won all of those championships because his teams we're stacked with the most all-around talent and fast break system during that time. Before Russell, Red didn't win a dog race. Wilt didn't have the luxury of having great teams until later on in his career. The two championships Wilt did manage to win we're two of the all-time most-winningest teams in the history of the league.

Wow Red Auerbach is a pathological liar. Russell was eating Chamberlain's lunch? LOL. Wilt was 7 of 8 from the field, Russell was 2-7. Wilt shot FTs poorly only making 30% but Russell was his normal bad 50%. Wilt out rebounded Russell 27-21 despite playing 5 fewer minutes. Wilt was clearly outplaying Russell like he normally did.
Mel Counts was 4-13 and committed a key turnover in the final minutes. Elgin Baylor also had an off game shooting 8-22. The Lakers outside of the big 3 shot 10-38 26%. West and Chamberlain didn't get any support from the rest of the team, that is why they lost on top of Wilt tearing his ACL and missing the last 5 minutes.
I understand Red sticking up for his guy Russell, but when you tell outright verifiable lies you lose all credibility.
Wilt played team ball when he respected the coach, Bill Sherman and Alex Hannum. His team set the NBA record for wins in a season twice. The 72 Lakers still hold NBA records for scoring margin and consecutive wins. If Red couldn't have won as many championships with Wilt, then he wasn't a very good coach.
Red is just bitter because he tried to recruit Wilt in HS to go to college in Boston so he would have the draft rights to Wilt. Wilt went to Kansas giving his draft rights to Philly where he played HS ball.
