Love him or hate him, Rick Barry makes some very valid points here. He’s always been a critic of everything he doesn’t have his hands on. Barry has been one of the more polarizing players in nba history (at best). At worst, Rich has been HATED by fans, peers and media for 50 years. As usual, he pulls no punches here calling the nba an “embarrassment” - find out why… the legend makes some sense here. You know you kinda agree too. Haha.

Old guy here - I actually saw Rick Barry play in Portland when he was with Golden State. You could tell he was different than all the other players - whirlwind on offense, hardnosed on the floor, and then those whacky (but effective) under-handed free throws. Always worth the price of admission to see him play. And all the fans hated him too, which was fun to see - but he would always kick the Blazer's ass up until the Walton era (when Bill was playing). But even that was something too. Glad to see he's still the same old arrogant SOB, but very correct about the state of the game then and now.
I am a Knick fan. The man was a FABULOUS player!!! The underhanded free-throw is much like Kareem's skyhook......Rick gave Bill Bradley fits!! They had a fierce rivalry when they went at each other.......
First time I saw Rick was at the Oakland Auditorium with the Oakland Oaks vs Dr J with the New Jersey Nets.

Everything he said was correct. Just because he does not watch it as much today is not a contradiction. He just doesn't do analysis like he use to, so naturally he wont watch it as much. He accurately described the Warriors/Cavaliers game 7 which was not that long ago.@@aro245

Rick Barry is 100% correct! I watched this ledgend single handedly sweep my Washington Bullets to win the 1975 NBA Championship. We were shocked given the stacked team we had. We had Elvin Hayes, Dave Bing, Phil Chenier, Wes Unseld, Kevin Grevey, Truck Robinson, Mike Riordan, Clem Haskin, Jimmy Jones. No way we were suppose to get seeped in four games! Rick Barry crushed us!
I saw a couple of those games in the old cow palace. Rick Barry and nobody else famous playing with great intensity, energy, teamwork. When he got hot, Barry was like an unstoppable force.

It's been difficult for me to watch since the Spurs dismantled. The Warriors are enjoyable (usually). And Giannis and Milwaukee was nice too see too.

Rick Barry - one of my all time favorites. Love the guy. People say he is unlikeable. No, I believe he wants players to do their best. I just wish early in his career he had not departed the Warriors for the Oakland Oaks. If he stayed with the Warriors throughout the 1960's, the Boston Celtics would have one less championship.
whether or not that's true, I hope we see the GREEN's long overdue 18th banner in the very near future. they should have 20 by now. too much time & money wasted w/ Rick Pitino. I couldn't help but notice that he went his whole pro career w/out really getting close to an NBA title. Paul Peirce waited a while to taste the champagne in '08. Doc Rivers was one the best things that ever happened to the BOSTON CELTICS.

I can’t watch todays game. He’s correct, they travel, set moving screens, etc. a lot of standing around, very little defense. It’s like watching a 3 pt shooting contest. Boring, uninspired garbage. Sadly, the NFL is changing for the worse also, holding, grabbing, and PI on every play
You would be hard pressed keeping Rick under 40 in the modern game. He was a great deep shooter he had a great stop and pop he could drive and he was a fabulous passer. Always considered a bit of a jerk but no one ever doubted his game

I don't know if he was a jerk, I always thought of Barry as very direct in that he wasn't afraid to tell it like it is. Not everybody likes that but I find it refreshing. Barry is no diplomat. 😂

Right on Rick, you sumed it up perfectly. Today's game isn't played the way the game was intended to be played. I loved when he said, you can have the athlete I take the guy who knows how to play the game.

Rick Berry is speaking facts on facts on facts. This is the man I wanted. to hear from...and basically he is saying that most players are lazy and relying on athletic skills, and he's right. And my pops is best friends with several NBA Hall of Famers. These are facts.
In 1975 my brother & I went to see the Warriors in their preseason workout at San Jose City College, which was open to the public for the last hour of their 2-a-day workouts. That gym was about the size of an average high school gym, and we were about 8 or 9 rows up in the bleachers. From that vantage point you could really see how great all these players were (this is the team that went on to win the title that year), and Barry was at the height of his game and was a great complete player. His shooting range was phenomenal; his understanding of the game was great (Larry Bird would be a good comparison). And this was the era where players were making a nice living, but before big money corrupted the game. Courtside seats at Warriors games at that time were under $10 a seat! I think the mega-money has corrupted the game at all levels. Money has turned this into a great team game to one of individual "super-star" prima-donnas. As Rick says here: the current NBA is full of great athletes that don't really understand the game, and that it's a TEAM game. Barry has earned the right to speak, and always has intelligent things to say.
That's a great way of putting it. Back then they had great basketball players. Today they have great athletes who play basketbakk. Big difference.

He's not wrong! This is where I think Steph Curry's success and greatness has hurt the game! You have young kids that "want to be like Steph" and don't understand the importance of team basketball. So many guys now will pull-up for a 3pt. shot on a 3 on 1 break! KD and the Nets had similar issues last year; too much iso-ball at the top-of-the-key or the wings! Team basketball wins games in the end!

@The Esquire of Sports ® Thats the irony of it! Every young kid wants to jack-up 3s and "be like Steph," but, not always realizing that Steph(usually)plays team basketball! The Warriors are always cutting, swinging the ball from one side of the court to the other, looking for the open man! Sometimes during the season they get a bit off-script and start hoisting up shots, but when their chemistry is on, there's no team that does it better!

The young kids growing up and a lot of the players in the league have become way too reliant on the 3pt shot at the expense of team basketball. That was one of Rick Barry's points as well! Because Steph is the greatest shooter ever, kids trying to emulate him focus way too much on hoisting 30ft shots rather than getting into sets and motion. The player today who perfectly exemplifies what I'm talking about is Trae Young! I wouldn't want him on my team for nothing! His shooting percentage is horrible and his shot selection stinks to high heaven! He plays about as good team basketball as Westbrick does!

Exactly! These kids don’t understand that the entire Warriors organization is on board with Steph shooting any shot he wants and the team has bought into that play style, and Steph has earned that… you can’t just take shots like Steph Curry in a game and expect your teammates and coaches to be ok with that.
When he said they are 20 feet from the basket then run in and dunk was right on point. They don't defend the basket today.
The problem is that those damn refs officiate to the player’s intentions. They’re too interested in orchestrating a show for the fans

Barry's communication style was direct, no doubt about it. I saw Barry play live and the tube quite a bit and I'd say his teammates were with Barry the majority of the time with the one blow up happening in the '75-76 season when some of his Warrior teammates were playing unselfish basketball along with other bonehead mistakes. You know Barry let em know about it so when Barry got into it with an opposing player in that playoff game, his teammates didn't come over to help him out. That team had dissension anyway for various reasons, it came to a head, and the Warriors imploded. In '74-75 there was none of that but the owner didn't like the Warriors glue guy, Butch Beard's wife (true story) so it was no surprise the Warriors came apart the next year. I like Barry's willingness to be direct and not put up with BS.
Way too many 3 attempts now and offenses really do get away with murder
Yeah maybe the refs gotta start tightening up. The athleticism is great but you can't let the players get away with violations constantly. You'll end up hurting the game. Like Rick said, refs start calling by the rule book and the players will adjust. That's it.
For me it starts with the commissioner. As far as I remember the league would make new rules up every other year to try and increase the scoring and different things for the referees to emphasise on and the referees ref the game according to what the league wants. The trouble is Stern/Silver and their teams used some of these things to grow the league. I would love to see Adam Silver sit down with someone like Barry to talk through these things

Rick Barry is one of the greatest small forwards ever. He was 6'8" (shoes on like all rookies were measured from '73 on), he had excellent speed (The Miami Greyhound!), he could flat out score, and he was a great passer. Before his nasty knee injury with the Oaks he was also getting 10 boards a game. Nobody could stop Barry from driving to the hoop either, he was amazing going to the hoop. He also developed his outside shot where it was deadly so from the triple threat position Barry was unstoppable. Barry is also the best I ever saw at the pick and roll which he describes in the interview so well. Barry was not afraid to tell you what's on his mind either which was obvious in this interview too. 😆
Most people who tell it like it is, are thought of as abrasive, especially by the media. Checking Barry's career average stats, he is just slightly behind Bird, overall. I wish I could have watched him play more than I did, but regionally, it was next to impossible, at the time.

What he points out is so true, and using the pick & roll is spot on. Also the fact todays players have weight lifting programs, nutritionists, agility coaches, etc. that the older player didn't have would make them that much better if they played today. Plus just imagine if the great players of the past could travel, carry(palming), have a no charge zone under the rim, etc., etc.,
So let me get this straight, people are mad at Rick Barry for telling the truth and think he's entitled and arrogant because he knows basketball strategy that they refuse to use in today's NBA. Does that about cover it?

Stern took defense away in the 90s. And celebrated MJ / iso plays vs the 80s teams when going to the paint was risking your life. But he's right. The traveling and carrying is ridiculous. Zeke and Stockton were the last guards who actually dribbled without carrying
Offense was so bad in the 90’s, they had to pull three point line in. It certainly wasn’t just “taking defense away,” it was also, the nba just wasn’t as dynamic in the 90’s.

@@NBAHistoryCLNS the three point line was in the ABA in the 70s, and the NBA adopted it in the 80s after the merger. The offense was fine in the 80s, it was a team oriented game. Now it's just hard to watch, guys shooting 23% from the arc with 4 teammates doing the same thing, then promoting themselves when they finally hit one after 6 straight bricks?
Offense was slow in the 90s cause teams adopted the same defensive half court style great teams like the bulls and Knicks would do. Pace was slow well into the 2000s, and league noticed the offense was slowing so they tried to move the 3pt line in but it failed increasing the offense cause teams were still holding the ball more. Plus late 90s to early 2000s, the league was becoming more predicated on athleticism, you saw a serge of athletic guards and bugs around that time. And defense was still there but in 95 enforced from the 79 rule and refs would call guys on occasions for it but players were still able to put their forearms on the other players.
Rick’s basketball knowledge is unmatched. He always accommodated me whenever I asked for his autograph. Must have gotten it ten times in the 60’s and still have them all. One of my favorite memories of games I ever attended was his performance in gave seven of the ‘75 western conference finals against the Bulls. Couldn’t put the ball in the ocean in the first three quarters and then blew up in the fourth, leading the Warriors to a come from behind victory. I thought the roof was going to blow off the Coliseum that night.

I feel EXACTLY THE SAME WAY!! I’m not as old as Mr Barry but I grewup watching from the early 80’s till Kobe retired. Haven’t watched a game since. The officials are the problem. They let these players break so many rules. This man right here is spot on. Players today are super skilled with ZERO fundamentals. This game today is a dam travesty……

Nailed it. One thing not mentioned .. Sports medicine/how they treat injuries these days compared to the 80s & 90s. By todays standard those procedures are barbaric and the recovery time was MUCH longer.

As someone who watched the NBA in the 1970s, Philadelphia 76ers with Dr J, it does drive me crazy to watch todays NBA and college ball because, he is right, they all carry the ball when they dribble. In the old days if a player carried the ball when he dribbled the other team would get the ball

The NBA is so damn scripted and so detached from REAL BASKETBALL COMPETITION AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL! And y’all be letting people get away with shit! Put a camera on Giannis and you’ll see privilege at the highest level. The competition is LITERALLY easier for him IN THE GAME. What is the standard?! Just because he’s sponsored by Disney?! Chill on the behind closed door agreements to secure stardom. That is not cool for people like Isaiah Thomas, Vanvleet, Do Jo in Dallas… These people had to work within the system to get where they are or as far as they could! You let Giannis get away with travels, charges, and 10 second FT violations (of whom the rule was made for). Giannis is so propped up by the league he might as well be seen in public riding a Segway with an NBA logo on the front of it. Because they got him on the right path.
He isn't wrong about any of it, except that it's not the refs fault the rules aren't called properly. The NBA dictates to the refs what to "emphasize". They started doing this years ago, when scoring was way down, mostly due to extreme expansion from the late 80s through the mid 90s. The talent had been spread too thin and defense ruled. Then they basically changed the way the game was called to make scoring easier, and over time the talent level also increased due to a major increase in international players.
True, as I remember Jordan getting away with fouls, carrying the ball, pushing off, traveling, etc. He was a great player, but the NBA told the refs to lighten up on him and select players that drew in the money. That is when the game became corrupted.

It's not just the NBA. The NFL and MLB also have the same issues. No fundamentals and all about scoring and the long ball. All 3 are unwatchable.
I said exactly this in a recent comment (before I knew this video was around). Call the game by the rules. If these are truly the best players in the world, they should be able to follow the ACTUAL rules, not the rules as the refs choose to call them tonight. Call traveling, call offensive fouls. Play f'ing basketball.

Preach!!! I was not a talented player, I got good playing street ball but on a court with a whistle I was a liability because I travelled, palmed and fouled so to see such talented players playlng a game that i wan not allowed to is frustrating.
Somewhere, a young person is saying the words, "Ok Boomer", and in their mind, it negates everything Rick Barry just said.
Yep, and then in 20 years a game will have to stop for players to do an on-court "challenge" involving a sponsor and a crocodile and the kid will say "I miss the way the game used to be..."

Grumpy 😠 grumpus.....but dang, he's right. They're really scared to call moving screens, traveling, blatant fouls, goal tending, you name it, and it started with guys being allowed to intimidate the Refs, and challenge calls.
I miss the NBA in the late 2000s and early 2010s, there was a good balance of mid ranges, lay ups, and 3s
