@@dusk6159 smart? he is wrong on this...people is shooting more three point shots because there is prove that it is more efficient to shot threes for example that to shoot mid range jump shots. People not always make the right play, but that has always happened...he is just an old school explayer who doesn't really understand modern basketball. Today some defenses do not even come from behind on the screens, they rotate. About the rulebook, the rulebook has also changed. The gather step is in the rulebook of FIBA and the NBA since 2009 or 2010. Regarding the carry rules, rulebook states that the player could not put the hand below the ball, or bring it to a pause. Sometimes they don't call that, because is not always easy to see that. Putting the hands laterally to the ball is not considered a carry by rulebook. But clearly he doesn't understand modern basketball.

The worst thing about it is that nobody knows how to call it. If a ref sees what he thinks is a travel, he just assumes it's a gather step. I also believe that the Doncic one step fadeaway should be a travel. If I've stopped my dribble, I've established my pivot foot. I can't move that foot while still maintaining possession. Doncic transfers from his pivot to the other foot then shoots. How is that not travelling?

My fifth grade rec league coach told us that a player who doesn't know how to use a screen is practically adding three defenders (because the guy "setting" the screen is now so useless he might as well be a defender). None of my coaches through 9th grade got it. One of our plays (I think this was seventh grade) was for a post player to screen for the point guard just past half court. I don't know how many times this led to a breakaway layup for the other team -- why? Because the point guard would either stand still or start moving away from the screen -- instant double team. The post guy (I was one of them) would do their part and, if we were lucky, would get a poorly thrown pass either at our feet or above our head while 25 feet from the basket.
It's also so much about 1-on-1. In my 20s, about 10 years ago, I played in rec leagues and there were two types of offenses: a flat iso offense, four on the baseline one going solo, or a "heave it as soon as you get close to the three-point line."
He doesn't need any of our validation on this point, he's a brilliant basketball mind. However, Barry's absolutely right on these points.

The 3 point line improved some things, and the Warriors have taken advantage of it more than most based on the math. Still being able t travel, palm, reach in, and rarely get called for charging has gone too far.
Frankly I might have been able to get past most of it until they started with what I call the ring of stupidity in the paint. It was designed to allow players to fly through the lane to dunk unabated. Just imagine one of the defensive GOAT's like Russell not being able to challenge the offensive player in his domain. He might not be the ring GOAT which would be a shame.

Today's basketball fan would label Barry as one of those old school bitter former NBA players but you know what, he is right on every point. I grew up watching NBA in the 80's and I can say, today's NBA may be more athletic than yesterday's player, but they are not as well rounded and fundamentally sound as the old school players. Barry also left out another point. That today's travelling accomodations for NBA players, is a lot better and more luxurious than what NBA players had to experience back then.

It just be a perception thing, but it seems like today's players have completely lost the capability of hitting consistent mid-range shots, because everyone's chucking up threes. Larry Bird, for instance, had the rep as a long-range shooter, but when you look at his actual stats, he only threw up 2, maybe 3 of those shots a game. The rest were mid-range jumpers. Same with Alex English, who led the NBA in points during the 80s.
Now, a lot of that probably has to do with the fact that these guys went through high school and college without a three-point line, so they were used to hitting those shots, but it seems like shooting percentages would go way up, and thus point totals as well, if guys could hit mid-rangers with consistency.

The NBA has used its officials to assist the offensive super stars in becoming bigger super stars, to bring in bigger crowds and more lucrative TV contracts. More money, in other words. The NBA has ruined a great game, which many of us have loved since youth, by having the officials not call any of the infractions he named off. This gives the offense tremendous advantages. This crap is even prevalent in high schools and kiddy leagues.

You are right, money has ruined the competition. In the USA but as a consequence also in Europe, for waht you mentioned and for some other reasons. For example, my first conscious contact with the NBA was in 1984. I think there were 23 teams back then, in 2023 there are 30 and there are plans to admit more teams (LasVegas, Seatle...). 7 more teams means over 100 more players in the league. Vulgar players who would have never dreamt to be part on the NBA are playing there. Teams are therefore much worse, and some of them are such a joke. As a result, centers have disappeared in many teams. In the 80s there was a couple of seven footers in each team, today there are many teams with 6' 5" - 6' 7" guys playing at center. Something that happend in Europe and it was a sing of the european backwardness, now is common in the NBA because nature can't create 60 seven footers. In the 80s, great players who couldn't make it through the NBA, came to play in Europe so, 40 years later, we have worst teams in the NBA and Europe, and less competitive tournaments.

So suddenly I realize why I won’t turn on an NBA game unless it’s a playoff game. THIS is why, when I watch an NBA game, I’m simultaneously enthralled with the athleticism of the modern NBA player and find myself bored to tears. It’s a strange feeling, this mixed feeling I have-a feeling I get nowhere else but when I watch NBA basketball.
One second I’m amazed how it seems everyone can hit a ( usually wide open) three , the next I’m watching three offensive players standing around on the perimeter while the two others play one-on-one with their men , and nobody is on defense under the basket, not to mention a big man like Wilt ready to knock that &hit into the stands.
Barry is right- the athleticism today is great. But the NBA management imo , with help from the refs, has succeeded in turning the game into a celebration of athleticism instead of a celebration of the wonderful TEAM game basketball really is. The NBA doesn’t want an educated fan base who know what a moving screen is, or traveling, or palming the ball or playing cohesively as a unit. All the aforementioned things just make modern players look that more incredible.
Kudos to Rick for hitting the nail squarely on the head but especially because he runs the risk every time he talks like this of being called a “ bitter old curmudgeon .” But, I’m bitter too. I miss the game I grew up playing. I miss being able to watch an NBA game where half the players on the court aren’t standing around like spectators watching the other players either try to get off a three or go in for a dunk on an uncontested rim. The algorithm will send me a 70s or 80s NBA game now and then and I’m both surprised how relatively few sensational plays like three pointers there are plus how much more drama and how much more interesting the old game is because everybody is playing as a team and everybody on the court is busy.
Plus somebody, usually a 7 footer, on defense is actually guarding the basket in those old games, instead of on the perimeter with his hands on his hips “ guarding” the other team’s big man who thinks he should be able to shoot threes too.

He did'nt make too many mistakes and whenever he did he seemed to always do something compensate for it. He was an NBA TV analyst after his playing days were over and watching this interview takes me back to his analyst days. Of course he's 100% right. Much of what he saying has been discussed with the small circle of "old school" guys that all still like the game like I do, but are appalled at how much we see wrong with the NBA today. The players are great athletically but lack sound fundamentals. I learned from that experience that playground ball (which I had learned) was not the same game as organized ball, which included all the things Rick talked about here. @@netplayer23 For whatever it's worth, I'm a sports purest. What I mean by that is, the team, (or in the case of single individual sports like tennis, the competitor) that should win, does win. That is true in track and field far more often than any other sport. Basketball may be the worst. It is often decided by the refs, not in one call, necessarily, but when there are 20 questionable calls during a game (which might be about the average) and those calls go 14-6 for one team, and that team wins by a couple of points. I have a tough time watching basketball for that reason. It's my fault. My need for the correct team to win has ruined basketball for me as a spectator sport.

"It's not a complicated game, but people make it complicated". That applies to so much of everything now and not just basketball

Most of the changes in Nba came from street ball, cross over is really palming the ball, carrying. 😀

90s dribbling was best for the game, and more like how the game is still called at lower levels. You have the freedom to momentarily touch the sides of the ball but anything under the ball or ridiculous hesitation moves are banned. Also 2 steps, anything more is a travel. These basic rules we were all taught is disregarded at the highest level. You know how many kids in youth rec league get called for carries and travels because theyre trying to dribble like kyrie and euro step like Giannis

@@themontgomeryc The NBA is a superstar's league. Always has been. The biggest stars get away with the most. Elgin traveled continuously and didn't get called. So did Michael Jordan, along with his push-offs. Another one was Moses Malone, who took like 5 little steps down low, and violated the 3 second rule by 6 seconds. James Worthy would give up the dribble and start running at the 3-point line. They all commit violations in one way or another. After awhile the refs just allow it as part of their game. Every sport has professional cheating

@@scottodonnell7121 I think some of the superstars got a few calls every game but don't agree with some of your claims. Regardless, pro sports is not what it used to be and that's a shame.
