- It's harvest time... for our potatoes! This year (and for the first time ever) we planted a container garden using five gallon buckets and a couple of old half-wine barrels that came with the property when we bought it. Join me as I tip each individual container over to find our own homegrown tubers. The species we grew this year were Dark Red Norland, Purple Viking, and Charlotte Potatoes.

Your dog is so beautiful. Thanks for filming in the rain or us.
Thank you so much! We're pretty close to filming this year's harvest and it should be HUGE. Thanks for the comment and for watching along!
Bravo!
From the building of your bucket garden to harvest!!!! Enjoyed following along. Now I suppose Tess is making potato salad.... love potato salad!!!
Thanks Charley! Pretty exciting to have all of the work finally pay off. We’ve been enjoying the small pieces in the air fryer!
It's so fun! I have been binging on watching others harvest their potatoes. We experimented this year by planting Purple Magic in the ground and single ones in 10 gallon pots. The spuds planted in the ground got much larger. They were grown the same in every other way. We noticed that they seem to send shoots out and form the largest potatoes away from the seed plant. This is just second year growing spuds. We are north of Seattle in zone 8b. You did really well this year. I wish that there was more information about specific varieties, like size expectations, growth habits, etc.
Thanks for watching! These buckets made for an awesome harvest, but now you have me wondering if we should try planting in the ground next year. Sounds like you guys had some major success! We're getting ready to plant our garlic today!
@theidahopanhandlers Are you planting garlic in buckets or in the ground? My garlic didn't do well last year. I think mostly they were planted too late. We have some 20 gallon tubs that we are thinking of planting garlic in. But, because of them being above ground, I don't know how deep they should be planted or how far apart.
Time to build a potato cannon
Now you’re speaking my language.
Excellent harvest. I will start growing potatoes next year. I have some chiting now. I grow sweet potato every year. Enjoy your potatoes. They look yummy.
Thank you so much! I was very happy with how the harvest came out, and I'm hoping to dabble into growing sweet potatoes next year. I ended up taking all of the "egg" sized potatoes from this harvest and have them all individually wrapped in newspaper and are sitting in a drawer in the refrigerator. I'm hoping to have an even better harvest next year! Thanks so much for watching!
Great harvest 🎉
Thanks Val!!
Unfair advantage growing potatoes. You live in Idaho😂. Here in Texas i csn grow sweet potatoes very well. I loved watching your harvest. Congrats!🎉
Yeah I suppose we're more apt for a great harvest from living in the 'tater state! Thanks so much for watching!
It was my first year growing potatoes too! 🥰❤️❤️❤️ Great harvest out of those 5gal buckets! Congrats! 💕🌱🎉
Thanks so much! How did your harvest turn out?
She's hard working woman God Bless 🙏 you! And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.
Honest question, what do you have planned for all those potatoes?
Great question! I plan on storing them until they’re ready to eat, and then throughout the winter I plan on us eating them one at a time. The smaller, “egg-sized” spuds are going to soon get wrapped in newspaper and stored in a cool room for the winter. My hope is that they’ll last and survive until next year so we can use them as seed potatoes to grow more. Thanks for watching!
Not to bad. How many seed potatoes did you plant in those buckets.? What was the average bucket harvest weight?
Thanks! I planted two seed potatoes per bucket. I'm not quite sure on the average bucket harvest weight to be honest.
do you re-use the soil for ur next harvest?
I haven't ventured into reusing my soil yet, but I did put it all in my compost pile. I'll probably recreate the soil again this year with fresh product.
This is fine, but I have never understood why people put more than one seed potatoe in a 5gal bucket. Is there a run on dirt or buckets?? Both are free (well, if you know who to ask for buckets). You will get more per seed potatoe.
really nice but you are so f^^ked now because once you start growing potatoes you are hooked started with three types now an easy dozen started with 5 gal buckets now 20 gal grow bags all because a video popped up in my suggestions how to grow potatoes in 5 gal buckets been 12 years now keep seeing one i want to try and if they do good you have to keep growing them so you keep adding types!
Haha I've been bitten by the potato bug.. you sir are correct! I bought three new species to try out for the year which will bring my total to six. So far my favorite is the Charlotte. Thanks for the watching my harvest!
@@theidahopanhandlers i love charlotte,i got some sarpo mira this year can't wait.
@@winddmmyI also have a container of Sapro Mira!
Creeping Danny. Not species....it's variety
clickbait. you only had 1 5 gallon bucket. i’m unhappy! 😢
I’m not sure what you mean. I definitely had more than one.
