That mix sounded different from the others I’ve heard. I’ve never heard the piano so distinct over Prince’s solo.
I was thinking the same thing. Jeff’s vocals sounded different too. I wonder if this video used a soundboard recording.
For a video including one of the greatest guitar solos ever the poster managed to get a version where the solo couldn't be heard. Ridiculous.
Same here...Could actually hear the other solo guitarist trying to keep up with Prince as well. lol
Perhaps dood could google the first video on google for another perspective. Hope he does…
It does sound a lot different than the original video.
I love how Prince stood back and let them play as best as they could, and then showed them how it's done and walked away. Nice.
Not only that; but the other guitar solo in the beginning is the standard version were it mimics sadness. The Prince version is so emotional the guitar actually weeps. Prince plays his solos with emotion and as if they were the lead vocal.
Tom Petty (The Heartbreakers, The Traveling Wilburys) - lead vocals, guitar
Jeff Lynne (ELO, The Traveling Wilburys) - co-lead vocals, guitar
Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith) - organ
Dhani Harrison - guitar, backing vocals
Jeff Young (Jackson Browne) - piano
Marc Mann (ELO, Oingo Boingo) - lead guitar
Scott Thurston (The Motels, The Heartbreakers) - bass
Steve Ferrone (AWB, Duran Duran, The Heartbreakers) - drums
Jim Capaldi (Traffic) - persussion, tambourine
Prince - soul, swagger, heat, sexiness
George Harrison - spiritual guidance
Eric Clapton - blues inspiration
Jimi Hendrix - cosmic influence
Love this performance, prince isnt showing off, he just comes on stage and serves the song greatly 😅
I mean come on... the lean back, throws his guitar in the air and walks off. Don't be a hypocrite.
@@znk0rthis was kinda his FU to the industry. He had JUST been left off a list of the best guitarists ever by I believe Rolling Stone. He did the damn thing!
Where did the guitar go?
It never came down.
George got a new Tele in heaven…
Princes energy is always on EFF YOU you’re not better than me and I love it 😂
Jeff Lynne mastermind behind ELO, plays every instrument, arranges the orchestra, produces everything. Sounds like we need some Jeff Lynne reactions on the channel lol
We do really need that @natecorning 🤗
Uh….so does PRINCE 👑
Not from this dood.
He seems pretty closed minded, and near-sighted.
You are right, David. That guy whose voice you liked is indeed Jeff Lynne. Jeff Lynne is accomplished British music artist in his own right and was close to George Harrison. Jeff in fact worked with George Harrison on his last album and after George died helped finish it. The other person listed in that title is Dhani Harrison who is George Harrison's son was was to Tom Petty's left on stage. Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty were the ones appointed to officially induct George Harrison to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in that show. I don't know when this reaction request was made but it was strange that the person who requested it didn't give you any official links. After Prince's death, this very performance found new life and went viral purely because of Prince's guitar performance here. That official video over at the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame's youtube channel has, as of me writing this now, 119 MILLION views. It became so popular in fact that the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame almost 2 years ago released two updated videos. One titled "2021 Remaster" then several months later a "Director's Cut". Both versions have better picture and I think better sound but they also use different angles than the original version uploaded.
Some people point out that it was at this show that George Harrison was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame and that Prince's performance was somehow disrespectful. Pure nonsense. First, what most of them fail to mention and/or realize is that it was also in that very same show that Prince was also inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame (officially inducted by Hip Hop group Outkast and Alicia Keys). Second, if you watch many of the different covers and performances of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", you'll notice that the second half of the song is essentially open to whoever is given the guitar solo duties to have at it and do their thing. Look up when George Harrison himself performed this song with the great Gary Moore on stage. Gary Moore comes in at the same part of the song that Prince does here and he lets loose in his own way. Or listen to Peter Frampton's cover where he goes into his own shred fest in that same second half. So I reject those kinds of complaints by some that have made it against Prince here. Prince was fantastic. And really, it is because of Prince that the video has over a hundred million views. Because of the clip being rediscovered after Prince's death and going viral by a new audience, it without a doubt introduced "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as well as an entire genre of music and musical artists like George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, etc... to whole groups of people that otherwise would've never listened to any of it otherwise. It's nothing but a win-win.
Anyway, for anyone interested I'll leave the links below to the updated versions of this video from the Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame's youtube channel in case you're interested in seeing them.

Director's Cut: ua-cam.com/video/3MC6s9HHonU/v-deo.html
Only difference I picked up is that the 2021 Remaster shows you where the guitar that Prince threw in the air landed. The Director's Cut does not.
@@DaRunningManSubs One thing that strikes me with a the version used for this video compared with the later edits is that it seems the later edits actually 'fixed' a few notes of Prince's solo. For example at around 10:40 he blatantly misses a chord change while in the later edits this seems to be fixed in post. Still a fantastic solo regardless though.
Prince = 🐐
Prince's solo was a 10 easily. Prince manages to take you on a journey and story with each of his solos. The dynamics and showmanship and performance was excellent. He does this all the time in every live guitar solo. And he's as good on Bass, Drums and Keyboard.
R.I.P. Prince 🎸🔥
At times it does seem like Prince's solo is "out there", but if you break down the basic notes & chords he chooses, he's totally following the rest of the band & is totally aware of where he's at at all times
That dude you said whose vocals you liked but didnt think fit this song is Jeff Lynne. He is the driving force behind Electric Light Orchestra. He was good friends with George Harrison, co-writing and producing George's comeback album Cloud Nine. Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan are members of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. The group started by accident because George and Jeff needed a b-side for "This Is Love." George wrote the Traveling Wilburys song "Handle With Care". I dont remember how Tom, Roy, and Bob got involved (I think it was a jam session) but they realized that "Handle with Care" was too good to just be a B-side, so they formed the Traveling Wilburys. I highly recommend the groups, especially, "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line."
Definitely no tension or disrespect concerning Prince...and he often just leaves the stage after one-off performances like this. He does his thing, blows the audience away, and struts off the stage as if it's no big thing lol. He doesn't hang around for applause.
The guy who sings the chorus is Jeff Lynne. Dhani Harrison is the kid playing acoustic guitar behind Tom Petty, who looks exactly like his dad Geroge Harrison did when he was young.
Love the way you put that: "Prince's (solo) was kinda out there -- But at the point in the song, it's supposed to be out there..." The song is constucted & composed to build up to that final guitar solo coda
BEAUTIFUL!!! RIP George Harrison and Tom Petty and Prince 😇💝🌹 Thank you David for sharing this awesome video 😊💓🤘✌️
This sounds different than other videos I’ve seen. It’s like the person recording it is standing by Jeff Young (keyboards), and Steve Winwood (Hammond B3 organ) as I hear them so predominantly. Also Jeff Lynne’s vocals sound off and I’ve seen him in concert years and years after that. Jeff is Dhani Harrison’s godfather and besides being in ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) he was in the Traveling Wilbury’s with George, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. The first soloist is Mark Mann who is also with ELO. Dhani Harrison looks so much like his dad it’s spooky.
Marc Mann, yep.
Is it just me or did the audio sound distorted? I don’t remember it sounding like this when I first saw it. Thanks for the review David!
Yep, spot on! - I thought the same - REALLY distorted, sadly - the other versions I've seen are nice and clear - shame... Enjoyed David's reaction, but have to disagree - LOVED Prince's solo (especially as it was a nice F.Y. to Rolling Stone mag!), and what a boss exit! 😆
The live Prince cover of Whole Lotta Love is killer as well.
Man, the audio mix in this version of the video sucks! The official R&R hall of fame version is way better!
This has been one of my favorite performance tracks of all time, because of Prince. One of my favorite guitar players, but not, in my mind, generally known for it. Glad to see this making the rounds again. I agree with the score
Hey David,
I think the interesting things about this performance is not entirely obvious, and needs some backstory: Prince (who was being inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame) and agreed to perform George Harrison induction posthumously was not well leading up to this night, and pushed off rehearsal until the night before the show. He asked for space to play the last solo. He eventually showed up, blasted an amazing solo in a way only he could do, threw his Tele in the air, and it never came down…
Well its good to see legends like Tom Petty and Prince. I remember like it was yesterday the day i saw Tom Petty & Heartbeakers ft. Stevie Nicks. It was in East Berlin and i came from Berlin-West to watch that in 1987.
I love this version for the guitar work, reminding me what Prince hated, to be seen as, the new Jimi Hendrix. Great guitar sound and showmanship, just like Jimi. The other guitarist playing I believe was Marc Mann.
Prince fans are probably going to pout because you didn't rate it as the best ever in the history of time -- Me, I don't expect everyone to love it, I'm just happy that Prince's guitar playing is finally getting so much attention after he's gone
PRINCE was simply the greatest
Hehe Dani Harrison is almost a carbon copy of his dad at that age, so it has to be Jeff Lynne cause you didn't mention Steve Winwood 😂 The funny thing was that they didn't rehearse this and that they had no idea what Prince's solo was going to be. He just let them know he got it. And of course this performance is famous for Prince's vanishing guitar after he throws it up 😂🤘🏽
Horrible expression while Prince was KILLING IT .. Geezus looked like you were watching a funeral procession. UGH
You are right about Tom Petty's voice fits this song much better !!
Yes, you were right guessing that Jeff Lynne was the other singer. As others pointed out, Jeff is from Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Dhanni Harrison is George Harrison's son.
Prince is what made that cover
Could you imagine Prince doing vocals. He IS a vocalist TOO!
Along with Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty, and George Harrison comprised the two-album supergroup called the Travelling Wilburys. Lynn and Harrison also served as producers for the project.
PS - Not to beat down of you too much re: your uncertainty about Lynn's identity, but given how one of the guitarists was manifestly of a younger generation than the others, you should have put your money down on him being Dhani - aka, the son of George - Harrison.
🫠🫠🫠
I saw Peter Frampton perform this song during his farewell tour, something I'll never forget.
2nd vocalist was Jeff Lynne.. from ELO if I'm not mistaken
Also, I'm pretty sure the song was written by George Harrison not The Beatles.
Awesome video.
Jeff Lynne was the other vocalist he is also the lead man for ELO. The other guitarist that did the first solo was Steve Winwood from Blind Faith. But to me prince stole the show.
Prince tossing his guitar into the air, where it disappears into the ether
You'll get showmanship with Prince that's for sure. I do enjoy his 80's stuff a lot. Can't go wrong with Tom Petty either. Not too familiar with Jeff Lynne and ELO.
Jeff Lynn with the beard, Harrison, give you a clue, looks like his dad.
Its only Prince that raises this song, its a bit vanilla isn't it ?
I agree with you completely. Jeff Lynne has such an amazingly clean voice. But Tom Petty’s voice is perfect for this song. While TP didn’t look pleased about Prince’s solo, Dhanni Harrison had a big beaming smile and was clearly into it.
In fact it was Dhani who thought Tom would have a problem with Prince's performance, when actually Tom knew it was going to be over the top..Tom told him to do his thing..that's why they made eye contact..Tom loved his solo! It's an interview with Tom saying this!
Watch it in HD tom has a huge smile during princes part
Danny on big guitar looks just like his dad George, Paul Mc cartney on piano
There is absolutely no guessing as to who Dhani's father was. Absolute double. I'm surprised you don't know who Jeff Lynne is as he was the mastermind behind the Electric Light Orchestra in the 1970's onwards or were they not well known in the US? They were ground-breaking in their time for introducing guitars with classical stringed instruments in the same song.
Nice one, David!
You forgot Steve Winwood....
Loved this reaction !
😂😂😂Sorry to laugh - but when I saw you were reacting to this I could have almost scripted your reaction , from the Jeff who? to not knowing which one was Dhani Harrison or even mentioning Steve Winwood and Steve Ferrone . The song itself does come across as very vanilla I'll agree with you there .
I would agree with others that you should perhaps do some ELO reactions - you'll be surprised .
The Traveling Wilburys was one of the few ensembles that deserved the description " Supergroup " and consisted of a couple of minor musicians you might have heard of - Tom Petty , Roy Orbison , George Harrison , Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan
Just one final thought - Americans can sometimes be so parochial ( especially musically 😉 )
Steve Winwood
I’d be curious to know which other versions you’d place above this.
Of course, many non-Prince fans would argue that Eric Clapton's original solo, which Harrison had overdubbed onto the song before its release, was far better (i.e. not self-indulgently showy) than that which his idiosyncratic majesty produced on this particular evening.
Rip Tom
Other videos of this sound much better something seems to be off in this video the audio it's not quite right
Completely agreed
There was a little tension.......prior to this performance Prince had been left off the top 100 best guitarist's.
This is not the original audio.... somebody is playing over Prince solo
Petty and Jeff Lin
Speaking of covers Nonpoint does a really good one to when doves cry. Her ump! It's made my boppers playlist
It's funny how Danny doesn't look like his father..hah✌
Electronic Light Orchestra...?
Pulled the classic cartman, "screw you guys, ima going home!"
This cat? You mean Jeff Lynne from E.L.O. and Traveling Wilburys He, Tom, Dylan, George and Roy were in to
Also head nod to Prince is George Harrison's son
I'm pretty sure Steve Winwood was on keyboard although he could play guitar as good as anyone.
Prince is a musical genius..
That’s Crazy how most of those guys are dead now.
There is some distortion with the video you chose, and the ending is not right. Try watching the video from the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
I didn't chose the video. The requester who made the request provided me with a link to the exact video he/she wanted me to use for the reaction.
Good
Something is so off about the sound on this video
You don't know who Jeff Lynne is? Seriously?
I think you can visibly see the disdain from Tom Petty during this performance and why Prince exited like that
OMG JFC smdh just stop.
@@BamaMatters11 the fuck language are you speaking
You are kidding right? Tom encouraged Prince to continue because he knew it was making this special, which he said in an interview afterwards. Prince is also a band leader and he looked at Tom for his approval and Tom smiled and Prince continued. Prince left because he was late for a show he was having that night (you do know Prince was inducted into the HOF that night as well). Let's be honest Prince liven up that performance and we and they all know it. We need to stop with the BS.
@@chica4530 Thank you for explaining this!
The other guitar player is the brilliant Marc Mann, check out "The concert for George". ua-cam.com/video/Nsg1-rPaQKs/v-deo.html
You liked the other guys solo better. You are not worthy to comment on guitar solos.
