Thank you, Karen. I have only been pastel painting for a little over a year. I love it! Have not gone out into my flower gardens to paint yet! Frightens me for some reason. You are such an inspiration to me, and have a gift for teaching. Thanks again for sharing.
This is really helpful Karen. I'm in the process of experimenting with my plein air supplies. At the moment I have a backpack for my art supplies and my camera bag for filming it for UA-cam with a couple of tripods and easel. But I reckon I could pair it down a bit to make it less bulky. I really love the idea of having an "anywhere" set up to take on family trips to squeeze in a bit more artwork. I have been experimenting with having a more limited palette of pastels. I really like the suggestion of the little folio for paper/finished paintings.
safety necessities for plein air should include water, sunblock, and bug repellent spray specifically aimed at deer ticks. Up here in NY you will pick up deer ticks if you do not use repellent and wear long pants tucked into boots. Biting black flies and mosquitos are also an issue so I wear a bug repellant hat and that solves that issue and means I don't have to spray repellent on my face. It means more stuff to pack but this stuff will preserve your health while enjoying outdoor activities. I keep my safety supplies in small sizes contained in a zip pouch in my backpack which is also sprayed with repellent since I tend to place it on the ground. I bring a light weight folding chair , again pre-sprayed with repellent. This may seem like overkill to those who do not deal with deer ticks but trust me when I tell you that lyme disease is serious and debilitating and well worth preventing if possible. My art and safety supplies easily fit into my small school size backpack and the chair is slung over my shoulder and neither is cumbersome for this old lady.
Hi Karen - thank you for this helpful video. Not sure if you'll see this, but what suggestions do you have for the panel holder? I have a tripod, palette holder and box but seem to get lost looking for a practical, lightweight panel holder that will accommodate up to 16" high. Thank you!
Thanks so much, Karen for this video. So helpful, love the bankers clips and plastic board suggestions especially!!! Going on travel plein air workshop trip next month this is fantastic!!
Thanks for watching. I did this video for my Patreon channel where I list all of the products. I need to copy the list and put it in the description box. I will plan to do this later today.
I use an Oben tripod. It has been discontinued but it will hold up to 6 pounds. Be sure to weigh your full box and look at the weight limits for the tripods you are considering. My smaller boxes weigh under 6 pounds full.

You are the best Karen! Thank you for sharing your knowledge about pastel!
You are so welcome! I appreciate your feedback!!!

Great video! Thanks for sharing💜🎨
My pleasure 😊
Very helpful! Thanks!
Couple questions: How long are the bankers clips you use, and which travel tripod? Thanks so much. Great post!
They are about 2 inches long. My travel tripod is by Oben but it has been discontinued!
Thanks so much!
hi there ! where can I find the brand names of the products? :)

I have used a similar setup, but find that the box on my tripod is shaky. Any solution for that?
Which tripod do you recommend? A camera weighs much less than even a small pastel case.

Hi Karen , where are the links for the supplies you referenced, please.
Have a look at this blog post. The links are at the bottomkemstudios.blogspot.com/2015/04/a-compact-plein-air-set-up-for-pastel.html
Very timely. May is the beginning of the prime plein air season as far as I’m concerned.
Karen do you teach portrait classes as Well?
No I am only a landscape painter! Thanks for asking. :)
