I was so taken with the Heilman boxes, but just could not afford them! SO I made my own soft pastel box, it is to heavy for mounting on a tripod, but I truly have zero plans for working outside! I did enjoy this video and I look forward to a finishing video? I hope so. Have a lovely day!
Thanks Pete! Yes, Heilman boxes are not cheap. I was saving on shoes and clothes to afford the first one 😂 My husband made the first studio box for me, but for plein air I wanted the Heilman for all its great qualities. If you don’t ever take pastels outdoors then there’s no reason to buy one. I’m sure the box you made serves you well. I do plein air and I had to travel to teach the workshops as well, so it makes it really easier.
This was so very helpful. I have wanted to see your process for a long time and am new to pastels. I visited family in Centerport, NY, in 2021 and thought that I recognized the setting you were in while painting. The area reminded me of my childhood home, (Norwalk, Ct.). I'd love to see the entire demo. I miss the east coast and I thank you so much for sharing this with us.
I’m so glad it was helpful and reminded you of the childhood area! The place I was in is near Stony Brook, but it might look quite similar to the one you visited. Maybe next time I try recording my plein air, I’ll find a more quiet place, so there’s no loud conversation going in the background 😂
Thank you! I'll see if that's possible sometimes in the future. There are some technical challenges with filming long videos outdoors - I don't have a special camera or equipment for it.
Great video and so helpful! Does the Heilman box come with the fitting that you said you sometimes forget - to attach to the tripod, or is this an accessory that must be purchased separately?
Thanks! I'm not sure which one you are referring to. If it's a little handle to fix the tripod from tilting, it's coming with the tripod. If you mean the attachment that goes on top of the easel and holds the board with the paper, then it's separate part that Heilman sells. They come in different sizes - smaller and larger. Mine is a larger one, I believe. When you look at the Heilman site you'll see them. The box comes with pre-drilled holes to fit that "easel" in. I hope that helps.
I think you mean the pastel box. Here's the link to it on the site that sells them heilmandesigns.com/product/heilman-backpack-pastel-box/. It's a great box!
If i may -- which size Heilman easel are you using? I want a lightweight but highly usable plein air set up, but I am torn between the 12-inch and the 18-in easels I can't afford both right now. Thank you so very much Lana. I love your work and will be taking one or more of your classes in the first half of 2025.❤
Thanks, Margie! Maybe I'll get to meet you in one of my zoom classes, if you are considering those :) As far as the Heilman boxes, I have both the Backpack and the Sketchbox Double. I like them both, but if when I have to walk to my plein air location I'd rather take the smaller one - the Sketchbox Double. It's lighter but still fits enough colors when the sticks are not full sticks, but I always break them anyway into smaller pieces. If you plan to do plein air mostly close to your car, then the Backpack is probably more convenient, easier to get more colors in. There are the exact dimensions for all those boxes on their site, I'm sure you looked at them already. I hope that helps. Happy holidays!
Well, that was a different story :) I had another cheap tripod with a flexible phone holder, I used the iPhone for filming. No high tech gear at all, I'm sure it shows 🙂
I have the large box that you have but it seems to be too heavy for the tripod and it has tipped several times. I bought an easel that was suppose to take the weight but the ball portion is what slips over time. Wondering what easel you have.
Hi Dana, I don't think the model of the tripod is sold at that site any longer, but they probably have a similar one. Check out this one www.artworkessentials.com/products/Tripods/TP6777/TP6777.html Mine is "Easyl" but I know a lot of pastel artists use Manfrotto tripods and happy with them, but I have not used it personally.
OH LANA HOW WNDERFUL TO BE ABLE TO GO OUTDOORS WITH ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT AND ENJOY A BREATH OF FRESH AIR & PAINT A LOVELY SCENERY OR ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER> IT LOOKS SOO PEACEFUL OUT THERE AND I ENVY YOU OUT THERE TODAY! LMAO 😄😄

Thanks Alicia! I’ll try to pick a nice day for that and more isolated place 😊
I would love to see a complete peeing air recorded. I love your work and your style of painting. ❤
Thank you! I'll see if that's possible sometimes in the future. There are some technical challenges with filming long videos outdoors - I don't have a special camera or equipment for it.

Thank you Lana. I've already decided on the small backpack, but I can't decide on the easel. Thank you
Thank you, Lana! What is your set up for filming this?

Thank you Lynda! Yes, it was a beautiful summer day. Even though the noisy company settled in behind me, it was still nice to be out.
I actually mean tripod
