This was such an elegant explanation of exactly how jungle and drum and bass is reverse engineered to be played by humans and on the drum set. It's actually exactly what I've been exploring, but unable to describe as simply and straight forward as you have. I'm finding this style of linear playing becoming almost its own genre and I've been exploring how adding more rest areas or "white space" can help give the quick rhythmic sections a more intricate and sped-up effect due to the contrast in quietness. You've gained yourself a subscription; mostly because of the excellent description, but also because of that voice!
I was very skeptical at first, but your demonstrations are undeniable. There are some things I have never noticed that I am definitely going to start incorporating. Thank you, sir.
The Amen break shares a lot with drum groove for "Cold Sweat", a James Brown song from 1967. Cold Sweat runs at 90-something BPM. A lot of early funk has a more spacious beat, while also retaining the mild syncopation.
Thank you so much! I was told “you don’t have to play all the notes” and upon hearing you demonstrate, i see it is true: it also sounds more interesting! Thank you!
Thanks so much for this video !! Been trying to crack some more complex higher-tempo grooves for weeks now and the tips in this video really helped. Much love
I seriously assumed it was more complex that what it really is. I thought i was far off, but after this video its literally just speed i need to improve. Thanks so muxh for this!
02:26 Keep doing it, I can maintain a tempo like that for 10min before chugging a bottle of water. Can I play after that ? That's for the audience to decide (I can't lol)
Good stuff , a fun video. If you look at your hi-hat hand you fulcrum is (squeezed) between thumb and index finger and you are using middle finger to work the stick. I have been working on move that to a more open fulcum between thumba nd midle finger and then using ring and little finger on the stick, mix this in the som e wrist action and you have a much more relaxed flowing hand. You can point your index finger out so you know you are using it when praticing.
bro so helpful 🙏 Im trying to learn this one jungle song I heard on some random youtube mix, and I noticed that the high hat and snare never coincide as they would in the case of that simplified ahmen break with straight eighth notes on high hat. like it was alternating hands the way you are doing it here, plus some fancy paradiddle stuff between snare and hat. thank you
This wasn’t explicitly stated in the video, but I personally think it makes or breaks 100% of the advice he gave. Practice everything you wanna do fast WAY slower first.
Match grip. In order to get a good bounce from the snare drum, I like to pivot the stick between my thumb and index finger. To me it feels more natural than traditional grip.
Lol the resonance from underneath of your snare drum is lasting longer than the release on your compression. It's making a weird swelling sound every time you play. Like a horror movie sound LOL fix your compression
What?! Really? That's actually really interesting (no sarcasm) because I thought it sounds awful! Perhaps snare tone, like beauty is in the ears of the "be-hearer"?
You say the longer you do it the harder it becomes and to do a live show of jungle or drum and Bass is impossible. With good technique you shouldn’t be expelling expending much energy at all it’s just about practice and technique technique technique technique technique
Yeah I’ve never watched all of it you bye you understand a couple of things about the origins of jungle and drum and Bass but you really really can’t play yet man. It’s bad form to be teaching before you are have mastered your instrument. It’s just a tacky. And yes before you say anything Like you don’t have Drum videos on your UA-cam page what do you know? I would have to say I’m about 15 years ahead of you and you should really take my advice
Wow, I never thought of that. You're right, I'm not a master of the instrument and I don't know everything; therefore I don't know anything and am totally incapable of helping anyone learn. The fact that you felt the need to leave three separate comments says a lot more about you and your motivation than it does about me and mine. Sure, I'm working too hard. Sure, my technique is sloppy. I'm learning, and other people can learn with me. That's what I'm here for. Not to be insecure and competitive and put people down. To provide useful information for those who seek it.
@@johnnybdrums the title of your video is how to play breakbeats fast . That implies that you believe you know how. And now you’re claiming you don’t know... which one is it? If you were naming this video honestly based on what you just said you should have named it something along the lines of “how to almost play something vaguely similar to breakbeat patterns if you only want to learn 2 bars and how to repeat them with bad technique”
I learned a huge amount from this video. I don’t know why you don’t seem to have the ability or desire, as someone who is (ostensibly) a veteran musician, to help lift other musicians up, but - if you can bear to take advice from such a snotty neophyte as myself - in my experience, sharing the knowledge I do have with others has been infinitely more rewarding than tacking dismal little screeds onto the hard work of those who may not have yet been blessed with years of experience. Hope you can feel less lonely soon.
This is going to help my Powerpuff Girls tribute band tremendously

I actually like these beats at the slightly slower tempo. I know the other musicians drive this, but I like the space a little. Good review!

This progresses from "how to make the beat easier to play fast" to "how to make the beat more interesting"
excellent work, been listening and playing to more jungle and DNB. this tutorial is perfect for it
When played fast it kinda reminded me of some of Dillinger escape plans drumming. Nice work

Brilliant drumming
This is an ingenious way to explain linear drumming. Good stuff
Love those kick sound, now im gonna sample this one also, thanks you🥁

I would love someone to make more music the way pendulum used to do it in their first album.
That’s a really helpful observation, thanks! The drum face at the end is priceless as well.
This is sick. I wanna sample and chop that last one
Thanks dude! Very helpful

This is sick, I’m definitely gonna sample and speed this up/ take the fast parts to make some jungle tracks 🎉❤
The Funky drummer is actually 16ths on the hats.
this was insanely he helpful, you're so underrated! thank you so much! ❤
Stop kissing ass.

I think Aaron Gillespie takes a lot of influence from breakbeat which is why I like the way he plays
A tune called sweet harmony by liquid is break beat so i googled drums and found u!!! Awesome 👌

Just wondering if you recorded the video in Astoria Underground Studios?
👏
I thought it was breakfast beats so I clicked in out of curiosity…
Trying to find out how to play glyphic canyon from the shadow the hedgehog soundtrack
well I was just gonna suggest to also be proficient in 300bpm blast beats, but yours is a much more efficient idea! lol
Now how do you timestreatch?
Chris Pennie has entered the chat
I read this as “How to play breakfast beats”
you are a great drummer !, this is helpful, thank you so much! :D
Let's get ready
Oh boy
Pratice time
Парень, у тебя школьный уровень, а ты учишь людей...))
this is a great video, thank you!
I didn’t watch the video, but here’s the answer: First, play it slowly and with a metronome.
wrong!
You should probably watch the video
This wasn’t explicitly stated in the video, but I personally think it makes or breaks 100% of the advice he gave. Practice everything you wanna do fast WAY slower first.
i mean, that's just vaguely true for like, every instrument.
Step 1: play slow break beat
Step 2: play it faster
Amen brother! Preach the gospel! That lil 20 minute mini documentary is inspirational for me.
Bravissimo uomo! Amen! Lol
There’s always option C: Be Louis Cole
I did not know pendulum played live drums
I watched 1:24 before i realized the title said "breakbeats" and not "breakdowns" XD
Have a search for the jungle drummer
This was great. Can I ask why the back of your snare drum hand is facing up instead of to the left when you’re grooving? It seems uncomfortable

Bro there isn't just one way to play the drums
@@sgeggbub1008 he’s just asking, settle down
@@Maodjrodnd would take a quick google

Your drum 🥁 has dust on it!

You have a real good voice. "a voice for radio".
No homo.
nice but for real i cant watch your right hand pinky
...Or you just learn to play the original patterns really fast. At least, that's on my list of things to learn.
Never trust a drummer with nylon tips... it's like gingers...
Lol I never understood nylon tip guys
It doesn't matter how the fuck the drum sticks are , be serious and don't give a shit if the drum stick tip is with nylon
Cold…
There is a reason nylon tips exist, my guy.
@@Tsudkyk Yes, to distinguish between those drummers to be trusted and those not to be trusted.
Very strange sound… loosing groove when you play faster. No dynamics no groove
can't win 'em all
